Abstract:
Douglas Scott Falconer obtained a first–class honours degree in Zoology at St Andrews University followed by a PhD at Cambridge for research on wireworms. He then worked with R. A. (later Sir Ronald) Fisher FRS, as a prelude to joining the ARC Genetics Section of its Animal Breeding and Genetics Research Organisation at Edinburgh University. There he spent the rest of his career, later becoming Head of Unit and a personal professor in the university. His research interests fell into three main categories: the formal genetics of the mouse, quantitative genetics, and the genetics of human diseases. His work on mouse mutants and gene linkage was a major contribution to mapping the mouse genome, and his research in quantitative genetics produced theoretical and practical findings that have been of much benefit to animal breeders and to human geneticists as well as to the understanding of traits of complex inheritance. From his research and teaching he developed his acclaimed textbook Introduction to quantitative genetics , which ran to four editions in 36 years. The book is used as a foundation text worldwide.Douglas was much admired as a stimulating and innovative scientist, a considerate and polite colleague, and family gentleman.

Abstract:
Abstract. The Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) allows the retrieval of tropospheric vertical column densities (VCDs) of NO2 on a global scale. Regions with enhanced industrial activity can clearly be detected, but the standard spatial resolution of the GOME ground pixels (320x40km2) is insufficient to resolve regional trace gas distributions or individual cities. Every 10 days within the nominal GOME operation, measurements are executed in the so called narrow swath mode with a much better spatial resolution (80x40km2). We use this data (1997-2001) to construct a detailed picture of the mean global tropospheric NO2 distribution. Since - due to the narrow swath - the global coverage of the high resolution observations is rather poor, it has proved to be essential to deseasonalize the single narrow swath mode observations to retrieve adequate mean maps. This is done by using the GOME backscan information. The retrieved high resolution map illustrates the shortcomings of the standard size GOME pixels and reveals an unprecedented wealth of details in the global distribution of tropospheric NO2. Localised spots of enhanced NO2 VCD can be directly associated to cities, heavy industry centers and even large power plants. Thus our result helps to check emission inventories. The small spatial extent of NO2 "hot spots" allows us to estimate an upper limit of the mean lifetime of boundary layer NOx of 17h on a global scale. The long time series of GOME data allows a quantitative comparison of the narrow swath mode data to the nominal resolution. Thus we can analyse the dependency of NO2 VCDs on pixel size. This is important for comparing GOME data to results of new satellite instruments like SCIAMACHY (launched March 2002 on ENVISAT), OMI (launched July 2004 on AURA) or GOME II (to be launched 2005) with an improved spatial resolution.

Full text
Abstract:
Members of the subfamily Ursinae dispersed into North America from Africa and Asia during the Miocene, with the appearance of Ursavus (Schlosser, 1899), Indarctos (Pilgrim, 1913), and Agriotherium (Wagner, 1837) (Dalquest, 1986; Miller and Carranza-Castañeda, 1996; Hunt, 1998). However, none of these genera were thought to have survived past the Hemphillian Land Mammal Age in North America. It is thought that these genera were replaced, and possibly out-competed, by members of the extant genus Ursus (Linnaeus, 1758), or Plionarctos (Frick, 1926), as suggested by several sources (Bjork, 1970; Dalquest, 1986; Bell et al., 2004). It has also been suggested that the Ursavini (Agriotherium and Indarctos) may have given rise to the extant ursids and the Tremarctinae (Harrison, 1983; Miller and Carranza-Castañeda, 1996). Of the Ursavini, Agriotherium is consistently found in the Hemphillian Land Mammal Age, and so is used as an index fossil in that its absence is assumed to indicate that a site is Blancan rather than Hemphillian (Lundelius et al., 1987; Bell et al., 2004; Hunt, 2004).

Abstract:
The species of the assassin bug genus Haematoloecha Stål, 1874 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Reduviidae: Ectrichodiinae)occurring in Taiwan are surveyed. Five species are recognized, two of them, Haematoloecha curta sp. nov. and H. pusillasp. nov. are described as new. Haematoloecha adachii Tachikawa, 1968 and H. nigrorubra Distant, 1919 are recorded forthe first time from Taiwan. Haematoloecha nigrorubra is recognized as having disjunct East Himalayan–Formosan dis-tribution pattern; a new subspecies, H. nigrorubra conspicua ssp. nov. is described for members of the Taiwanese popu-lation. A revised diagnosis of Haematoloecha is provided, species known to occur in Taiwan are keyed. The synonymyof H. nigriventris (Fallou, 1887) with H. nigrorufa (Stål, 1867) is confirmed. The colour variability of H. nigrorufa is dis-cussed. The following taxonomic changes are proposed: Haematoloecha puetzi (Kerzhner & Günther, 2004), comb. nov.(transferred from Parascadra Miller, 1954); H. nigrorubra Distant, 1919 = H. yunnana Hsiao & Ren, 1981, syn. nov.; H.rubescens Distant, 1883 = H. laeta Breddin, 1913, syn. nov. = H. laeta var. ardens Breddin, 1913, syn. nov. Lectotypes are designated for H. nigriventris, H. nigrorubra, H. nigrorufa and H. rubescens.

Abstract:
The Neotropical genus Macrothemis comprises 40 species described to date (von Ellenrieder, 2007) of which 22 occur in Brazil. The immature stages of this stream-dwelling genus are poorly known (Costa et al., 2004), as larvae of only nine species have been described: M. aurimaculata Donnelly, 1984 (Ramírez & Novelo-Gutiérrez,1999), M. celeno Selys in Sagra, 1857 (Klots, 1932), M. hahneli Ris, 1913 (von Ellenrieder, 2007), M. inacuta Calvert, 1898 (Novelo-Gutiérrez & Ramírez, 1998), M. inequiunguis Calvert, 1895 (Ramírez and Novelo-Gutiérrez,1999), M. meurgeyi Daigle, 2007 (Meurgey, 2009), M. musiva Calvert, 1898 (Santos, 1970), M. pseudimitans Calvert, 1898 (Limongi, 1989) and M. ultima González-Soriano, 1992 (Novelo-Gutiérrez, 2006).

Abstract:
In the first paper of this series (Albuquerque & Brandão, 2004) we revised the Vezenyii species group of the exclusively Neotropical solenopsidine (Myrmicinae) ant genus Oxyepoecus. In this closing paper we update distribution information on the Vezenyii group species and revise the other Oxyepoecus species-group (Rastratus). We describe two species (Oxyepoecus myops n. sp. and O. rosai n. sp.) and redescribe previously known species of the group [O. daguerrei (Santschi, 1933), O. mandibularis (Emery, 1913), O. plaumanni Kempf, 1974, O. rastratus Mayr, 1887, and O. reticulatus Kempf, 1974], adding locality records and comments on the meagre biological data of these species. We also present an identification key to Oxyepoecus species based on workers.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A new species of Sphaerodoridae (Annelida: Polychaeta),Sphaerodoropsis solissp. nov., is described from the Challenger Plateau in the Tasman Sea, south-west Pacific. It is the third species of the genus with ventral macrotubercles and is further characterized by the lack of dorsal papillae and the specific arrangement pattern of ventral papillae. A character indicating sexual dimorphism, that has been observed in three morphologically similar species,S. arctowskyensisHartmann-Schröder & Rosenfeldt, 1988,S. bisphaeroserialis(Hartmann-Schröder, 1974c), andS. garciaalvareziMoreira, Cacabelos & Troncoso, 2004, is confirmed forS. solissp. nov. BesidesS. solissp. nov.,S. arctowskyensisandS. parva(Ehlers, 1913) are newly recorded from the Challenger Plateau and the East Campbell Plateau in the south-west Pacific. An updated key for the genusSphaerodoropsisis provided.

Abstract:

Voracek, Martin. "EARLY 20TH CENTURY SOCIAL ECOLOGY OF U.S. STATE IQ AND SUICIDE RATES: EVIDENCE FROM THE ARMY ALPHA AND BETA INTELLIGENCE TEST DATA OF YERKES (1921)." Social Behavior and Personality: an international journal 35, no. 8 (January 1, 2007): 1027–30. http://dx.doi.org/10.2224/sbp.2007.35.8.1027.

Abstract:
Consistent with a number of facts from suicide research and an evolutionary view of suicidal behavior, positive ecological (group-level) correlations between contemporary suicide rates and intelligence level have been observed in several geographical (cross-national and within-nation) studies (e.g., Lester, 1993, 1995, 2003; Voracek, 2004, 2005a, 2005b, 2006a-h, 2007). The present research extended these accounts cross-temporally to a test of the social ecology of U.S. state IQ and suicide rates during the early 20th century. Analysis of historical state suicide rates (1913–24), along with validated state IQ figures derived from the Army Alpha and Beta Intelligence Test data of Yerkes (1921), showed a clear positive correlation of state IQ with suicide rates (independent of state wealth) across the USA, thus suggesting temporal stability of the effect.
