Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
A taxonomic review of Ctenodontina Enderlein, 1914, was performed and only two species are included: Ctenodontina mochica Lamas, 1973 and Ctenodontina pectinatipes Enderlein, 1914. Catostola Hull, 1958 stat. rev., a genus that was previously allocated as junior synonym of Ctenodontina has its status revalidated and justifications for this nomenclatural act are presented. Consequently, seven species previously allocated in Ctenodontina were transferred to Catostola stat. rev.: Catostola baleta (Walker, 1849) comb. nov., Catostola carrerai Hull, 1958 comb. rev., Catostola complicata (James, 1953) comb. nov., Catostola martini (Fisher, 1992) comb. nov., Catostola maya (Carrera & d’Andretta, 1953) comb. rev., Catostola nairae (Vieira, 2012) comb. nov., and Catostola sagta (Vieira, Ayala-Landa & Rafael, 2017) comb. nov. All species were redescribed and illustrated, except Catostola carrerai Hull, 1958 comb. rev., and Ctenodontina mochica Lamas, 1973, for which only diagnosis were provided. A new species Catostola indecisa sp. nov., was described and illustrated. In addition, new distribution records were provided for Catostola baleta comb. nov., Catostola martini comb. nov., Catostola maya comb. rev., Catostola nairae comb. nov., and Catostola sagta comb. nov. An identification key to all species is provided including distribution maps with previous and new records.

Abstract:
Abstract In the tribe Pyrgotini, a monophyletic lineage is considered as the subtribe Adapsiliina Rondani, 1869, revised rank; it includes the genera Adapsilia Waga, 1842, Campylocera Macquart, 1843, Euphya Wulp, 1885, Eupyrgota Coquillett, 1899, Geloemyia Hendel, 1908, Hendelpyrgota Vanschuytbroek 1963, Plectrobrachys Enderlein, 1942, Porpomastix Enderlein, 1942, Pyrgotomyia Hendel, 1934, Siridapha Enderlein, 1942, Trichopeltia Wulp, 1885, and an unnamed and unplaced genus-group taxon (represented by the group of species related to Adapsilia hirtoscutellata Hendel, 1933). Based on having at least two synapomorphies: the incomplete costa not reaching apex of medial vein, and male cerci flattened dorsoventrally, large, slightly longer and wider than epandrium, the broadest concept of the genus Campylocera Macquart, 1843 is proposed. In the Afrotropical Region, it therefore includes also all the species assigned by Steyskal (1980) to the genera Clemaxia Enderlein, 1942, Congopyrgota Aczel, 1958, syn. n., Diasteneura Hendel, 1908, syn. n., Dicrostira Enderlein, 1942, Hexamerinx Enderlein, 1942, Hypotyphla Loew, 1873, syn. n., Hypotyphlina Enderlein, 1942, syn. n., Lygiohypotyphla Enderlein, 1942, and Prohypotyphla Hendel, 1934, syn. n. The other important characters of Campylocera are the low epistome, subocular sclerite well expressed, and femoral organ on female mid femur always lacking. The following synonymy is established: Campylocera ferruginea Macquart, 1843 = Prohypotyphla omissa Hendel, 1934, syn. n.; Campylocera hyalipennis (Aczel, 1958, comb. n.) = Congopyrgota hyalipennis Aczel, 1958 = Congopyrgota kivuensis Vanschuytbroeck, 1963, syn. n. = Congopyrgota ethiopica Steyskal, 1972, syn. n.; Campylocera latigenis Hendel, 1914 = Prohypotyphla obtusicornis Hendel, 1934, syn. n. = Dicrostira partitigena Enderlein, 1942, syn. n.; Campylocera loewi (Hendel, 1908), comb. n. = Hypotyphla loewi Hendel, 1908 = Prohypotyphla (Hypotyphlina) saegeri Aczel, 1958, syn. n.; Campylocera caudata (Hendel, 1914), comb. n. = Hypotyphla caudata Hendel, 1914 = Lygiohypotyphla hyalipennis Vanschuytbroeck, 1963, syn. n. = Lygiohypotyphla ruwenzoriensis Vanschuytbroeck, 1963, syn. n.; Campylocera basilewskyi (Vanschuytbroeck, 1963), comb. n. (= Diasteneura basilewskyi Vanschuytbroeck, 1963), Campylocera laticeps (Hendel, 1908), comb. n. (= Diasteneura laticeps Hendel, 1908), Campylocera obscura (Vanschuytbroeck, 1963), comb. n. (= Diasteneura obscura Vanschuytbroeck, 1963), Campylocera similis (Steyskal, 1963), comb. n. (= Diasteneura similis Steyskal, 1963), Campylocera variceps (Curran, 1928), comb. n. (= Diasteneura variceps Curran, 1928), Campylocera nigripennis (Hendel, 1934) comb. n. (= Prohypotyphla nigripennis Hendel, 1934), Campylocera scalaris (Hendel, 1934) comb. n. (= Prohypotyphla scalaris Hendel, 1934).

Abstract:

Abstract:
Historic constructions of family budgets have been scarce in Spain. In fact, the first national Family Budget Survey was carried out in 1958. In this article, we present new evidence of different occupational groups’ incomes in Spanish provincial capitals (1914-1930). We also calculate the minimum cost of covering basic needs (food, housing, and other expenses) of urban working families. The main objective of the article is to estimate the capacity of men’s wages to sustain the family economy, as well as women’s contributions to the same. The main data sources are the Boletín del Instituto de Reformas Sociales 1904-1924 (Bulletin of the Institute of Social Reforms), the Anuario Estadístico de España 1914-30 (Spanish Statistical Yearbook), and the National Population Censuses (1910-1930), the food and nutrient totals prepared by García Barbancho (1960a and 1960b), and estimates of energy and nutrient requirements prepared by WHO/FAO and other specialists and institutions.

This article is an addition to the revisited history of financial economics. While Markowitz (1952, 1959), Roy (1952), and Tobin (1958) are recognized as the founding fathers of Modern Portfolio Theory, we recall that its origins should be traced prior to 1914. We consider two, turn-of-the-century, French, financial analysts and suggest that notions such as risk aversion and risk premium, international diversification and correlation, specific and systematic risks and arbitrage were common sense for Leroy-Beaulieu (1906) and Neymarck (1913). The contribution of these authors to the development of Modern Portfolio Theory—long before the 1950s—should not be underestimated.

British shipbuilding enjoyed undisputed international supremacy between 1890 and 1914. Following a gradual loss of world market share during the interwar years, Britain sustained an absolute decline in output between 1948 and 1970. European shipbuilding expanded at an unprecedented rate after World War II. This article attributes Britain's dramatic competitive decline in part to management's uncertaintly about the need to reform work administration methods during the decade or so following world War II, and in part to lack of trust between labor and management, which resulted in a failure of cooperation over proposed institutional reform between 1958 and 1965.

Abstract:
Although most Italian and Jewish immigrants arrived in the United States during the same turn-of-the-century period, the occupational trajectories of their descendants have been very different. Many writers have emphasized that Jews brought with them urban-industrial experience, entrepreneurial skills, a determination to settle in America, and a reverence for education (Joseph, 1969, orig. 1914; Glazer, 1958). Italians were more often peasants or farm laborers, though their familiarity with commerce and the crafts should not be underestimated (Briggs, 1978; Gabaccia, 1984). Some have also argued that familism and disdain for education further delayed Italian participation in the upgrading of the American occupational structure (Covello, 1972; Child, 1970).

Abstract:

The assignment of species to Faustula Poche, 1926 (Faustulidae Poche, 1926) is reconsidered with the proposal of Gangafaustula n. gen. to accommodate Gangafaustula makundai (Agarwal & Verma, 1981) n. comb.; Gobifaustula n. gen. to accommodate Gobifaustula qikouensis (Qui & Li, 1995) n. comb.; Lingulitrema n. gen. to accommodate Lingulitrema hilsai (Kumar & Agarwal, 1984) n. comb.; Schellitrema n. gen. to accommodate Schellitrema gasterostei (Schell, 1973) n. comb. and Varanasifaustula n. gen. to accommodate Varanasifaustula indica (Agarwal & Verma, 1981) n. comb. Faustula hilsai Kumar & Agarwal, 1984 is determined to be a species distinct from Faustula hilsai Rizvi, 1971 and F. hilsai Rizvi, 1971 is synonymized with Faustula basiri Hafeezullah & Siddiqi, 1970. Faustula rahemii Al-Daraji, 2004 also is synonymized with F. basiri. Faustula pyriformis Kumar & Agarwal, 1984 is transferred to Pronoprymna Poche, 1926 as Pronoprymna pyriformis (Kumar & Agarwal, 1984) n. comb. Faustula sayori (Yamaguti, 1942) Yamaguti, 1958, now synonymized with Pronoprymna petrowi (Layman, 1930) Bray & Gibson, 1980, is renamed Pronoprymna sayori (Yamaguti, 1942) n. comb. based on the presence of an entire (smooth) ovary in P. petrowi (Syn. Monorcheides petrowi Layman, 1930) as originally described, and Faustula varanasiensis (Agarwal & Kumar, 1977) is transferred to Bacciger Nicoll, 1914 as Bacciger varanasiensis (Agarwal & Kumar, 1977) n. comb. We currently propose the following 5 species be retained in Faustula: F. basiri; Faustula brevichrus (Srivastava, 1935) Yamaguti, 1958; Faustula clupeae (Srivastava, 1935) Yamaguti, 1958; Faustula gangetica (Srivastava, 1935) Yamaguti, 1958 and Faustula keksooni (MacCallum, 1918) Poche, 1926. Abstract:

Abstract:
The Palearctic blue butterfly genus Pseudophilotes Beuret, 1958 is not homogenous regarding the morphology of its genital structures. For this reason, some of its species have been considered to be representatives of other genera of the subtribe Scolitantidina (subfamily Polyommatinae). Here, we address these taxonomic problems by analyzing the phylogenetic relationships between the genera, subgenera, and species of this subtribe inferred via the analysis of five nuclear and two mitochondrial DNA sequences. We demonstrate that the enigmatic Asian species P. panope (Eversmann, 1851) belongs to the genus Pseudophilotes but not to Praephilotes Forster, 1938 or Palaeophilotes Forster, 1938 and does not represent the independent genus Inderskia Korshunov, 2000, as hypothesized previously. We synonymize P. svetlana Yakovlev, 2003 (syn. nov.) and P. marina Zhdanko, 2004 (syn. nov.) with P. panope. We demonstrate a deep genetic divergence between lineages that were previously considered as subspecies of the single species Iolana iolas (Ochsenheimer, 1816). As a result, we confirm the multispecies concept of the genus Iolana Bethune-Baker, 1914. We show that the Holarctic genus Glaucopsyche can be divided into four subgenera: Glaucopsyche Scudder, 1872 (= Shijimiaeoides Beuret, 1958), Apelles Hemming, 1931, Bajluana Korshunov and Ivonin, 1990, and Phaedrotes Scudder, 1876.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Strontium was shown to occur in marine organisms in the early part of the nineteenth century (Moretti, 1813; Vogel, 1914). However, since early detection methods have relied upon chemical separation, accurate quantitative determination of small amounts of strontium, has presented many difficulties due to the chemical similarity of strontium and calcium. During the last 30 years a number of relatively sensitive methods have been developed (Smales, 1951; Thompson & Chow, 1955; Bowen, 1956; Hummel & Smales, 1956; Odum, 1957b; Sugawara & Kawasaki, 1958; Culkin & Cox, 1966; Riley & Segar, 1970; Gibbs & Bryan, 1972). Towards the beginning of this period, Vinogradov (1953) made an extensive review of the chemical data on the marine biota. Due to the limitations mentioned above there was relatively little information available on the occurrence of strontium.

Abstract:
Abstract. We investigate the various methods currently available for distinguishing between the Central Pacific (CP) El Niño (or "El Niño Modoki") and the canonical El Niño by considering 10 different methods and 5 sea surface temperature (SST) datasets from 1880 to 2010. Years which are classified as CP El Niños with the greatest convergence between method and SST dataset are considered to provide a more robust identification of these events. The results identify 13 yr which are classified the most consistently as CP events: 1885/1886, 1914/1915, 1940/1941, 1958/1959, 1963/1964, 1968/1969, 1977/1978, 1986/1987, 1991/1992, 2002/2003, 2003/2004, 2004/2005 and 2009/2010. Our findings also indicate the persistence of CP events throughout the time period investigated, inciting the role of multidecadal natural climate variability in generating CP El Niños.

Abstract:
Popes wrote about the Holy Spirit at various times in the history of the Church, also at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The reflections bring us closer to the teaching on the Holy Spirit by Leo XIII (1810-1903), St. Pius X (1835-1914), Benedict XV (1854-1922). These popes ushered in a „new era“ of the Holy Spirit. Their successors: Pius XI (1857-1939), Pius XII (1876-1958), St. John XXIII (1881-1963) were described as heralds of a “new Pentecost”. Such a formula is extremely interesting, if only because of at least two a priori assumptions, namely that something like a “new Pentecost” does exist and that the popes mentioned were its heralds two a priori assumptions, namely that something like a “new Pentecost” does exist and that the popes mentioned were its, whatever it was, heralds. This study focused only on some of the aforementioned aspects.

Abstract:
The family Trichopeltinaceae is poorly known. This is due to an unclear history, few modern morphological studies and lack of sequence data in GenBank. The family was introduced in 1914 as Trichopeltaceae to accommodate the subfamilies Trichopeltinae and Brefeldiineae. In 1958 the spelling of the family was corrected to Trichopeltinaceae, as it was presumably based on the genus Trichopeltina. The family Brefeldiellaceae was introduced in 1962. Both Brefeldiellaceae and Trichopeltinaceae contain morphologically similar epiphgytic foliar taxa, the only difference being that the thallus is linear in Trichopeltinaceae and rounded in Brefeldiellaceae. In both families the thallus forms a neatly arranged, “skin-like”, palisade of cells over the flattened thyriothecia, pseudoparaphyses are mostly lacking, asci are bitunicate and saccate and ascospores are ellipsoidal, muriform of trans-septate and hyaline to brown. Trichopeltinaceae is the earliest name for these taxa. The family can be confused with Trichothyriaceae and this is discussed. A new species of Trichopeltina is also introduced and illustrated.

Abstract:
According to the folklore of economics, H. L. Moore (1869–1958) in Economic Cycles: Their Law and Cause (1914) mistakenly called his estimates of the supply of pig iron the demand for pig iron. The reviews of Economic Cycles by R. A. Lehfeldt (1915) and P. G. Wright (1915) initiated the folklore, which G. J. Stigler (1962) repeated in his obituary of Moore. Recently the folklore reappeared in histories of economics by M. Blaug (1986), K. Kim (1988), R. J. Epstein (1989), and M. S. Morgan (1990). Morgan, who was particularly critical of Moore, wrote that his empirical work “produced a relationship which he interpreted as a positive demand curve for pig-iron. This, of course, contradicted the negative relationship between the price and quantity stipulated by standard economic theory…. Moore's approach was a mixture. At its worst, it involved both the unthinking application of theory to data and the adoption of empirically derived relationships without reference to theory” (Morgan 1990, pp. 28, 141).

Abstract:
LacydoniaMarion & Bobretzky in Marion, 1874 is the only known genus in Lacydoniidae Bergström, 1914, which is composed of small polychaetes scarcely sampled. Studies on the biology and ecology of this group are rare and most species descriptions are based on one or a few specimens. There are 13 nominal species from different parts of the world. We revise herein the morphological characters used for species description on the basis of a lacydoniid assemblage collected in Campos Basin, Southern Brazil. Material was obtained in two sampling campaigns during the Project Habitats/Petrobras – Heterogeneidade Ambiental da Bacia de Campos, coordinated by CENPES/Petrobras. Lacydoniids were collected from the continental shelf, canyons and slope, at depths from 25 to 2500 m. This polychaete family is recorded for the first time in Brazilian waters, three new species are described and all others are new records to the South Atlantic. The new species areLacydonia anapaulaesp. nov.,L. brasiliensissp. nov. andL. jackisp. nov. Newly recorded species areL. cirrata(Hartman & Fauchald, 1971),L. laureciLaubier, 1975,L. mirandaMarion & Bobretzky in Marion, 1874,L. oculata(Hartman, 1967) andL. cf.papillataUschakov, 1958. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
First and additional host-plant records for 38 species of Gelechiidae from South Africa and Kenya are presented. An annotated list with brief descriptions of larval biology and known geographical distributions is presented. Three species are described as new: Mesophleps kruegeri sp. nov. (Namibia: Kavango Region and South Africa: Limpopo Province), Istrianis inquilinus sp. nov. (South Africa: North West Province), and Teleiopsis sharporum sp. nov. (South Africa: Limpopo Province). The new combination Istrianis epacria (Bradley, 1965) comb. nov. is proposed. The male genitalia of Hypatima melanecta (Meyrick, 1914) is described for the first time. It is noticed that male hitherto associated with T. commaculata (Meyrick, 1918) in fact refers to T. pundamilia Bidzilya & Mey, 2018. Hypatima stasimodes (Meyrick, 1931), Dichomeris coenulenta (Meyrick, 1927), Dichomeris eustacta Meyrick, 1921, Neotelphusa similella Janse, 1958 and Argophara epaxia Janse, 1963 are recorded for the first time from South Africa, and Istrianis epacria is new for Kenya. The adults, male and female genitalia are illustrated for some species mentioned in paper. The first record of the genus Teleiopsis Sattler, 1960 from South Africa is briefly discussed.
