Abstract:

Abstract:
The conventional Kjeldahl method which is usually employed for determination of total N in soil does not effect quantitative recovery of NO2- or NO3- (Bremner, 1965). Therefore, various modifications have been suggested (Cope, 1916; Davisson & Parson, 1919). Bremner (1965) observed that the quantitative recovery of NO2- and NO3- by any method, other than the modified Olsen's method (Bremner & Shaw, 1958), is not certain.

Abstract:
The genus Cestradoretus Ohaus, 1912 was erected by Ohaus (1912) to accommodate a Madagascan Adoretini species, C. tenuirostris Ohaus, 1912. This genus is characterized by the adults having the apex of the labrum with a long, fine, acute process curved downwards. In the addition to the above mentioned paper, Ohaus (1912) also described C. acomys Ohaus, 1912 from Tanzania, and later moved Adoretus tarsatus Klug, 1855, described from Mozambique, to Cestradoretus (Ohaus 1916). Later, Machatschke (1965) described two species from Africa, C. freyi Machatschke, 1965 from Botswana and C. minusculus Machatschke, 1965 from Somalia, and Frey (1976) described C. clypealis Frey, 1976 from Somalia. Thus, Cestradoretus included six species, one from Madagascar and five from Africa.

Abstract:
The Australian Lasioglossum Curtis 1833 subgenus Callalictus Michener 1965 is revised. Of the eight available names listed by Michener (1965), four are placed in synonymy and one species is recombined into Lasioglossum (Austrevylaeus Michener 1965) providing three valid species for the subgenus Callalictus. New synonymies and valid and recombined names proposed for Lasioglossum (Callalictus) are as follows: Lasioglossum (Callalictus) tooloomense (Cockerell 1929a) syn. nov. = Lasioglossum (Callalictus) aurantiacum (Cockerell 1916); Lasioglossum (Callalictus) ruficolle (Friese 1924) syn. nov., Lasioglossum (Callalictus) rufocollare (Cockerell 1930) syn. nov. and Lasioglossum (Callalictus) anomalum (Rayment 1935) syn. nov. = Lasioglossum (Callalictus) callomelittinum (Cockerell 1910); Lasioglossum (Callalictus) musgravei (Cockerell 1929b) is valid; and, Lasioglossum (Callalictus) contaminatum (Cockerell, 1929b) comb. nov. is moved to Lasioglossum (Austrevylaeus) contaminatum. Males of two Callalictus species have highly modified fore and mid tarsal segments. All valid species are redescribed, and keys to both sexes, montaged diagnostic images and distribution maps are provided to assist with species identifications.

Abstract:
Jean-Philippe Dallaire (1916 - 1965) is recognised as one of the most talented Canadian painters of his generation. Guided by an exceptional aptitude and a fertile imagination, he produced numerous and varied paintings during a career that spanned over thirty years, almost half of which in France. Considered as self-taught by art historians and art critics, he nonetheless pursued a course of study that positioned him within the clearly defined tradition of the French School. An attentive study of the mural art works he accomplished shows the multiple influences he absorbed, but mainly the rigorous respect of the precepts he acquired from two great masters, Maurice Denis and André Lhote, and later from Jean Lurçat. But these constituents, although they link him to his French genesis, never lessened the originality of his style. If his first religious murals are strongly tainted by the spiritual environment in which he gravitated, his mural art, religious or profane, following his return from France after the war, demonstrate a scrupulous respect of the features that identify masterpiece

Abstract:
Constructions of memory, myth and legend relating to Gallipoli have dominated the academic assumption which suggests that this dimension alone has allowed for the reawakening of the exceptional interest in the Anzac tradition; a tradition that has converged at the physical site in modern day Turkey. While these intangible constructions have waxed, waned, and re-emerged over the Twentieth Century, possessing the site to commence the construction of an Anzac Battlefield Cemetery has been ignored in academic enquiry. This significant series of events from 1916 to 1965 were indispensable to memory perpetuation and essential to the commemorative primacy that this preserved headland now enjoys. The desire to repossess, and then own in perpetuity the battlefield in order to attach the appropriate masonry adornments, is in itself unique. This dimension has not been academically scrutinised by any historian until now. Nor has the deliberate desire to construct an Anzac shrine that would someday attract pilgrims from the Antipodes been studied. Present day site-sacralisation by rite-of-passage pilgrims, thoroughly emersed in the Anzac tradition, suggests the convergence of the two dimensions is complete. To counteract this problem of the hegemony of the intangibles this thesis explores primary sources, gleaned largely from archival records, then evaluates the significance of the history of physical Gallipoli. Thematic approaches based upon the lines of possession, preservation and pilgrimage argue that this parallel dimension has played an indispensable role in shaping the end result today. Tens of thousands Australasian travellers now flock to this preserved battlefield to encounter the actual physicality of the tradition. The battlefield cemetery, complete with botanical emblems of ownership, had been out of the reach of the very generation who had created, acquired and constructed the battlefield landscape. The New Zealand public had to be content with assorted forms of vicarious pilgrimage coupled with widespread domestic memorialisation. New Zealands post-evacuation experience at Gallipoli became a story completely distinctive from that of Australia or Great Britain. The deliberately constructed Anzac Battlefield Cemetery is a unique landscape artefact that a proud but mournful generation set out to create. They eventually achieved this end by a complicated mixture of conquest, occupation, careful preservation, and commemorative ownership. These efforts were assisted by the vagaries of economic happenstance and international politics that left this remote Peninsula isolated and off-limits to human encounter. Fortuitously frozen in time, this landscape artefact, so steeped in Classical history, has emerged as one of the most sacred, and perhaps the most recognisable, geographic features associated with Australasia. Overriding these plans for shrine construction had been the stated goal of securing a reverent final resting place for those who fell during the creation of the Anzac legend in 1915. Sepulture perpetuelle became the post-evacuation catchphrase that propelled this Great War generation to go almost to the brink of war to secure the principles of this phrase. This lofty goal of permanence, by passage of time and the re-appropriation of nature, had mercifully been completed before the current second invasion that commenced in the 1980s. The Anzac Battlefield Cemetery is now a victim of its own very successful physical preservation.

Abstract:

Lister, Robin A. "An examination of the psychology of faith through the theologies of Paul Tillich, H. Richard Niebuhr and Wilfred Cantwell Smith : together with its implication for the construction of a universal theology." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/13466.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of faith has long been a subject of study for both theologians, whose prime concern has usually been with the nature and object of a particular faith, and philosophers of religion who have been more concerned with the relationship between faith and reason. This thesis differs from both such approaches in that its primary aim is to examine the psychological structure, functions and experience of the general phenomenon of human faith; that need to trust, be loyal to and centre one's life in something outside of oneself, It should not be identified with any one school of psychological theory; rather, its intention is to use a psychological description of faith to enhance the theological understanding of faith. Its methodology is to examine the psychology that underlies three particular theologians' understandings of faith: Paul Tillich, H, Richard Niebuhr and Wilfred Cantwell Smith. In addition to examining the psychology of faith, a second aim is to examine what the present author sees as a practical implication of such a psychological understanding of faith as expounded by W. C. Smith in his proposal for the construction of a universal theology. Chapter One is a general introduction to the thesis, a definition of terms and a brief examination of the place a psychology of faith has in the wider field of the psychology of religion. Chapters Two, Three and Four follow a similar format: each is a separate examination of the psychology that underlies Tillich's, Niebuhr's and Smith's understandings of faith respectively. In the case of Tillich and Niebuhr a differentiation is made between an objective psychological understanding of faith which concerns the functions and structure of faith and a subjective understanding which concerns the experience of faith. Chapter Five is in the form of a conclusion and proposes a uniform understanding of the psychology of faith based on the previous three authors. It also examines the main discrepancy between the authors' understandings of faith in their descriptions of the final object and source of faith. Following Chapter Five is a Postscript which examines W. C. Smith's proposal for the construction of a universal theology which the present author sees as a practical application of understanding faith psychologically.

Jain, Rogulski Mira. "Shirley Jackson ou l'écriture de l'inhabitable." Thesis, Sorbonne université, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018SORUL184.

Full text
Abstract:
Our study examines the modalities of the uninhabitable in the work of Jackson, where the characters are imprisoned in a world intrinsically hostile, as well as the strategies they use to thwart the instability it entails. The violence of the feelings at stake mirrors the cruelty of social relationships, leaving but little livable space even within the family circle, also affected by the entropy of ontological evil. Jackson’s heroines, variously confronted to the reemergence of past traumatic experiences that their odyssey through the present time transforms into unsurmountable obstacles, seek the ideal house, the haven that will anchor them into a world that rejects them. Jackson uses the tropes of the gothic haunted house as maternal space to illustrate the deadly deception such a place embodies. The cohabitation the most drastic forms of the death drive and vital impulses is the foundation principle of mental dissolution. Madness is one of the means to both embrace and understand the incomprehensible. We conclude by showing how the invention of one’s name is a way of elaborating an inner house

Abstract:
Abstract It was not surprising that immigration reform should reach the agenda of the civil rights coalition in the 1960s. American immigration policy since the 1920s had rested on a system of national origins quotas that favored immigration from northern and western Europe and that largely excluded Asians. The liberal reformers who dominated the heavily Democratic 89th Congress in 1965 deplored racial and ethnic quotas and banned them in the civil rights legislation of 1964 and 1965. The quota laws of the 1920s, however, had themselves been reform achievements, supported by a broad coalition that included middle-class “Progressives” (both Republicans and Democrats), organized labor, and the most prominent African-American leaders of the day. Immigration restrictionists from the left side of the political spectrum included leaders of organized labor, prominent spokesmen for black Americans, social justice Progressives, and conservationists. They argued that uncontrolled immigration, encouraged by industrial employers seeking docile low-wage workers, flooded the national labor pool, depressed wages, worsened working conditions and tenement housing, weakened organized labor, provided the basis for the corrupt city political machines, and threatened overpopulation. The immigration restriction coalition also included patrician conservatives such as Theodore Roosevelt and Massachusetts senator Henry Cabot Lodge, who sought to maintain the dominance in America of Anglo-Saxon stock. Madison Grant, a Park Avenue patrician, ardent student of the natural sciences and eugenics, and founder of the New York Zoological Society, in 1916 published The Passing of the Great Race, a popular text for “nativist” intellectuals.

Abstract:
Abstract The classical Mach –Zehnder and Michelson interferometers operate on the principle of coherent division of the amplitude of an incident electromagnetic wave by partially reflecting partially transmitting objects, called beam splitters. The perfect silicon crystals in the neutron interferometer are the beam splitters and mirrors. Their operation depends upon the dynamical diffraction of neutrons having a de Broglie wavelength in the range of 1 −5 Å. Although the results and basic physics of most of the experiments discussed in this book can be understood without a detailed knowledge of the wave fields inside the perfect-crystal slabs of the interferometer, it has been found that the successful fabrication and utilization of this device requires a rather advanced analysis of the dynamical diffraction process occurring within each of the single-crystal elements. The main goal of this chapter is to provide the reader with a focused description of the physics of dynamical diffraction in perfect-crystal media that is necessary to understand the interferometer in its essential details. In addition, there are a number of neutron physics experiments that do not use the interferometer, but are directly based upon the exquisite coherent wave fields accompanying the diffraction of neutrons in the perfectly periodic structure of silicon. The theoretical description follows the early development of X-ray dynamical diffraction theory (Darwin 1914; Ewald 1916, 1928; von Laue 1931). Here we will describe the first observation of the oscillation of the integrated reflectivity of silicon crystals as a function of thickness by Sippel et al. (1965), and the observation of the Pendellosung fringe structure by Shull (1968, 1973). The related, more recent ‘effective inertial mass’ experiments of Zeilinger et al. (1986), Raum et al. (1997), which also use dynamical diffraction effects inside perfect crystals, have already been discussed in Section 7.2.3.
