Abstract:
The South Asian millipede genus Chondromorpha Silvestri, 1897 is diagnosed and its relationship with Parchondromorpha Jeekel, 1980 is established. The species C. atopus (Chamberlin, 1920) and C. indus (Chamberlin, 1920), as well as the subspecies C. kelaarti kelaarti (Humbert, 1865), C. kelaarti longipes (Verhoeff, 1936) and C. kelaarti valparaiensis (Carl, 1932) are recognised as junior synonyms of C. kelaarti (Humbert, 1865), thereby reducing the total number of Chondromorpha spp. in India to four: C. kaimura Turk, 1947, C. kelaarti, C. mammifera Attems, 1936 and C. severini Silvestri, 1897 (the type-species). Two species, C. kelaarti and C. mammifera, are redescribed and illustrated in detail. All four Indian Chondromorpha spp. are keyed, and the known distribution records of C. kelaarti and C. mammifera are mapped.

Abstract:
During the early 1900s, Ellen Key's ideas about pedagogy, feminism and child rearing were influential around Europe. The same was true of Spain, although Key herself never visited the country. This article examines how Key's concept of collective motherliness was received and reformulated by Spanish intellectuals from two different generations: the first during the first two decades of the 20th century (1907-1920) and the second during the third and fourth decades (1920-1936). The focus is on works by two authors, each representing their generation of interpreters of Ellen Key: Carmen de Burgos (1867–1932) and Federica Montseny (1905–1994). The interpretation of these authors' texts in the light of Ellen Key's ideas of collective motherliness shows the reception and reformulation of these ideas in Spain changed between the two generations. The first focused more on collective values, such as women's education and patriarchal oppression in society, while the second generation focused more on individual aspects, such as free love and personal development.

Abstract:
Bob Dingle (1920–2016). Bob Dingle (Fig 1), who was involved with the establishment of Australia's continental Antarctic stations in the 1950’s, has died in Swansea, Tasmania, aged 95. He was born William Robert John Dingle in 1920 in Cornwall, England and left school in 1936 to join the General Post Office. With the advent of the Second World War he enlisted in the RAFVR and trained as a Wireless Operator. He flew operationally with Nos 78 and 35 Squadrons, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal and was commissioned. On his 39th operation the starboard inner engine of the Halifax bomber in which he was flying inexplicably caught fire. The flames quickly spread and the pilot gave the order to bale out. Unfortunately his pilot and rear gunner stayed on board and died in the crash and the navigators parachute failed to open. Bob landed safely and quickly linked up with the Belgian underground but was captured, a couple of weeks later on 6 January 1944, in a random Gestapo check of identity documents whilst boarding a train to Brussels. He spent the rest of the war as a POW.

Roll, Jarod. "Garveyism and the Eschatology of African Redemption in the Rural South, 1920–1936." Religion and American Culture: A Journal of Interpretation 20, no. 1 (2010): 27–56. http://dx.doi.org/10.1525/rac.2010.20.1.27.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article explores the ways rural followers of Marcus Garvey crafted and adapted a theological understanding of African redemption in the South during the 1920s and early 1930s. Members of the Universal Negro Improvement Association rarely spoke in concrete terms about the process of redemption or African state-building. Rather, when rural members talked of African redemption, they did so in eschatological terms, that is, as a theory of the end of the world. Above all else, they understood “redemption” to mean both their own individual salvation and the collective deliverance of black people. Their interpretations ranged from postmillennial visions of a climax of the history of the race bringing earthly peace and prosperity to a premillennial interpretation that plotted sudden, often violent, deliverance of the most race-conscious. These variant and seemingly contradictory readings of African redemption reveal an ontological shift among black Christians in the rural South during these years. African redemption provided rural Garveyites an existential language for reappraising notions of redemption, retribution, and the fate of the race in this world and the next that had profound implications for ongoing efforts to seek political and economic justice. This struggle over meaning and purpose lay at the very heart of rural black politics in this period as both an ideological constraint and a vehicle for innovation.

Abstract:
AbstractThe foundations of both Arab and Turkish nationalism lay in the late Ottoman mass education and conscription project and in the region-wide struggle against colonial rule in the 1920s and 1930s. The anticolonial insurgencies of the 1920s and 1930s have passed into history as the formative expressions of new nations: the Turkish War of Independence, the Iraqi revolt of 1920, the Syrian Battle of Maysalun, the Great Syrian Revolt, and the Palestinian uprisings of 1920, 1929, and 1936. But all insurgents of the 1920s had been Ottoman subjects, and many and probably most had been among the nearly three million men mobilized into the Ottoman army between 1914 and 1918. The Ottoman State, like all 19th-century European powers, had made mass education and conscription a centerpiece of policy in the decades before the Great War.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Using high-resolution stereomicroscopy and exploratory data analyses, a taxonomic revision of the cryptic species close to Plagiolepis schmitzii Forel, 1895, called Pl. schmitzii group, was conducted. Morphology was numerically recorded under highly standardised conditions considering absolute size and 16 shape, pubescence and surface characters. A key to the non-parasitic Westpalaearctic species of the ant genus Plagiolepis Mayr, 1861 is provided which firstly separates, on species group level, the Pl. pygmaea (Latreille) species group, the Pl. pallescens Forel species group and the Pl. schmitzii species group and, finally, on species level, the cryptic species of the latter group. The recognised species of the Pl. schmitzii species group are Pl. schmitzii Forel, 1895 (invasive species), Pl. barbara Santschi, 1911, Pl. atlantis Santschi, 1920 and Pl. invadens sp. nov. (invasive species) that is described as new from a supercolony in Germany. Based on morphological arguments, the taxa Pl. barbara var. madeirensis Emery, 1921, Pl. maura polygyna Santschi, 1922 and Pl. schmitzii var. tingitana Santschi, 1936 are recognised as junior synonyms of Pl. schmitzii, the taxa Pl. schmitzii crosi Santschi, 1920, Pl. pallescens var. kabyla Santschi, 1920 and Pl. perperamusSalata et al., 2018 as junior synonyms of Pl. atlantis and the taxon Pl. maura Santschi, 1920 as junior synonym of Pl. barbara. A concluding comparative section suggests that pre-adaptations for anthropogenous dispersal and transformation to supercoloniality in introduction areas are apparently common traits in Plagiolepis ants.

Abstract:
LEGAL REGULATION OF INTERPELLATIONS IN THE SILESIAN PARLIAMENT IN THE YEARS 1922-1939 Summary Article 14 of The Constitutional Act of 15 of July 1920 on Silesian autonomy granted the Silesian Parliament an important instrument of control of the administration of the autonomous voivodship in the form of the right to interpellate the Voivode and Voivodship Council. A specific procedure of the execution of this right was to be determined by the Silesian Act on the Internal Government of the Silesian Voivodship. However, the Silesian Parliament was not able to pass such legislation and the manner of interpellation was determined – as adopted in the form of parliamentary resolutions – by the Rules of the Session of the Silesian Parliament (of 13 October 1922; 31 January 1923; 17 June 1930; 11 March 1936). Each particular set of these rules of the session referred to the rules of the session of the Parliament of the Republic of Poland. The reception of all-Polish rules of interpellation concerned obviously only the basic rules, as the specific decisions (e.g. concerning the interpelled organs; the scope of support given to interpellation; the terms) were naturally different. The uncritical use of all-Polish patterns of interpellation led to the Silesian Parliament being granted upon The Rules of the Session of 17 June 1930 the right to interpellate the Council of Ministers; and to the removal of The Voivodship Council from interpellated organs – upon The Rules of the Session of 11 March 1936. These solutions were contrary to Article 14 of the Constitutional Act of 15 July 1920 on the Silesian Autonomy. The Silesian Rules of the Session, adopted 11 March 1936, formed according to The Rules of the Session of the Parliament of the Polish Republic (of 5 October 1935) contained some solutions which were contrary to the classic solutions of the interpellation procedure: facultative debate over the interpellation and reply; disposing the Parliament of the right to pass a resolution on whether to accept or not the Voivode’s reply. These solutions did not favour the effectiveness of the interpellation process.

Abstract.

Abstract:
This essay outlines the historiographic implications of the strange convergence between Berlin Dadaist Raoul Hausmann's Optophon (1920–1936)—a “synaesthetic” instrument designed to transform sound signals into light signals and vice versa—and Nam June Paik's pioneering 1960s television work. Hausmann articulated a new, “televisual” form of presence, which also implied a new form of tele-tactility. As his notion of tactility returns in Paik's work, the Optophon might be construed as the historical origin of the genre called “video art.” Yet, it could be argued that Hausmann's technological reasoning produced an interruption at the very site where such art-historical legacies are constituted.

This article provides a fresh look into Walter Benjamin’s famous essay, “Artwork in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” (1936). Following Benjamin scholar Esther Leslie, we claim that Benjamin’s lesser-known concept of “second technique” is integral for understanding both the meaning of essay as well as mapping the political and artistic aims of the 1920’s avant-garde movements in general. The article is structured around two cases of avant-garde, both of which are central already for Benjamin, but remain somewhat under-theorized in connection to Benjamin. These are the Soviet constructivist film and the idea of glass construction in Weimar-era German architecture. Keywords: Walter Benjamin, second technique of art, avantgarde, film, architecture

Abstract:
Application of planktonic foraminifera to micropaleontological, paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic research has enjoyed more than 150 years of activity. During the first century, foraminifera were used primarily for biostratigraphic analysis. Although fossil shells were recognized from beach sands and deep sea sediments as early as 1826 (d'Orbigny, 1826; Parker and Jones, 1865), it wasn't until Owen (1867) and the scientific results of the Challenger expedition (Brady, 1884) that the planktonic life habitat of these marine protozoans was clearly established. By the early 20th century, researchers were studying the biology of planktonic foraminifera at the cellular level (Rhumbler, 1901; Le Calvez, 1936), and linking their distributional patterns to regions of the ocean surface (Lohmann, 1920; Schott, 1935).
