The new generation of artificial intelligence technologies occurrence represented by ChatGPT is the beginning of the Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) era. In contrast to the impact of weak AI technologies on international relations discussed in the previous era, AGI is no longer just a tool in the traditional sense. The human-computer integration facilitated by AGI technology will rapidly and deeply penetrate into all areas of social policy and economy. It also may change the mode of social production and economic development, influence international relations and geopolitics by transforming the comprehensive state capacity, and simultaneously force new challenges in global governance. The acknowledgement of a new generation of AGI technological qualitative changes’ impact on future changes in international relations is no longer the fantasy; the underlying AGI changes in labour productivity will certainly lead to a disruptive reconfiguration of future international relations.

The purpose of the article is to analyse the problem of changing the relationship between non-functional and functional demand. The main task of the presented research is to define the most competitive model (based on functional or non-functional demand) of consumer behaviour in the conditions of the economy of the 20s of the XXI century. To solve this problem, we studied the structure of consumer demand: functional and non-functional ones. We identified the features of non-functional demand, and considered the reasons for its expansion in modern society. Moreover, paper highlights fixing changes in consumer orientations, which resulted in the search for satisfaction not only of material needs, but also aesthetic, emotional, and social ones. It allowed us to formulate a conclusion on the existence of objective reasons for the spread of non-functional demand. Within the framework of non-functional demand, we perform an analysis of origin and expansion of the downshifting phenomenon through the transformation of the basis of functional demand. The authors believe that qualitative changes in global socio-economic development have revolutionized the theoretical concepts of rationality, which are the basis of the functional demand model. Nevertheless, authors criticise the interpretation of downshifting as a model of irrational consumer behaviour, and put forward a hypothesis on the legitimacy of this new phenomenon to be analysed within the framework of functional demand. The authors consider the assumption of the possibility of changing the objectives of society to be a condition for the realization of this hypothesis. it can cause the transformation of «efficiency» concept over the past 300 years. Paper forecasts increasing of non-economic goals rationality, cooperation, mutual benefits, and the coupling of knowledge and technology to moral, cultural, and ethical principles and norms. As a result, in the contrary to the widespread assessment of downshifting as a deviant form of consumer behavior, there was put forward hypothesis considering downshifting as a part of classical consumer choice matrix, taking into account the transformation of this matrix itself.

One of the main banking activities is the branch network. It provides the effective banking, the profitability. Choosing the right location of branches is very important for the bank effective operation. Random or intuitively locations can have a negative impact on key performance indicators in the future. The correct and thoughtful choice of the bank branch location ultimately determines its maximum efficiency. The paper concerns with the determining of the bank branch location in terms of thorough mathematical calculation and many factors influencing bank activity. We developed a special calculation method using the DEA (Data Envelope Analysis) methodology, considering financial, branch location, location features, etc. The paper dwells on the issue of one large branch effectiveness comparing to several smaller branches covering a wider consumer area on the example of the branch on A. Sharifzade street, Baku, Azerbaijan. Indeed, it is important to consider the location in terms of its geolocation and landscape. However, one of the main issues is expediency of establishing one large or several small branches in densely populated areas. Moreover, it is necessary to take into account the infrastructure to improve the bank performance. To consider this issue, we use both hypothetical and statistical data of Capital Bank. It is one of the largest banks in Azerbaijan. Also it has a large network of branches. The article examines expediency of establishing one large or several small branches in the area close to the existing branch of Capital Bank on A. Sharifzade street. The efficiency of the current operating branch was compared with the total efficiency of virtual branches in several combinations. We analysed the indicators of the Inshaatchylar branch and virtual branches in different combinations in different locations in accordance with DEA CRS (Constant Return to Scale) method. Additionally, we determined the effectiveness of both the Inshaatchylar branch and virtual branches in various combinations. Thus, the highest score is the most effective one.

Increasing electricity consumption in the modern world makes the unique nuclear power market. It provides growing secured demand, specific external development factors. However, only four companies involved in the design, engineering, and construction of nuclear power plants (NPPs). The competitiveness of those companies included into M. Porter’s theory framework, but has its own characteristics. The purpose of the study is to determine the specifics of companies competitiveness engaged in the design, engineering, and construction of nuclear power plants, and assess the factors and prospects for their development. Besides, we define the theoretical base of international competitiveness with regard to the specific features of this economic sector, characterise the companies operating on the market, and build a model of the competitiveness formation of four representatives under the domestic factors of development. In conclusion, we will present the prospects for ROSATOM development in an internationally competitive environment. The models of competitiveness formation show the positive impact of investments in human capital, ESG agenda implementation, and long-term prospects of R&D projects. The research provides information for developing the theory of competitiveness and improving the company’s activities in this economic sector.

The paper presents an analysis of food stamp programmes in Russia. These programmes are funding the purchase of food in the form of directed payments or auxiliary payment instruments. However, there is no unified concept of food stamps. Indeed, the separate regional programs are launched. They controlled both by the State and non-profit associations. Additionally, there are various practices in Russia using similar tools to ensure national food security. The paper attempts to formulate mandatory criteria for food stamps. It also presents a classification for assessment of food stamp programmes structure. Hence the work assesses the organisational changes in terms of digitalisation of food stamp programmes. Nowadays, the Russian Federation is in the process of accumulating experience in the use of food stamps. The independent programs are being launched and assessed in various regions, the regulatory framework for the launch of larger-scale projects are being developed, etc. The most significant change increasing the efficiency of using food stamps is the digitalisation of the process. Modern food stamps have undergone a profound organisational transformation through the use of digital tools. Their use is more convenient for all stakeholders and makes it possible to effectively provide food support to the indigent people. Hence introducing of food stamp programme in the Russian Federation will improve public access to food and contribute to an increase in living standards. Moreover, the programme expands the demand for food products, increases the economic stability of producers, and forms conditions for import substitution programmes for food production.

The paper analyses the dynamics of unemployment in the Central Federal District regions in 2018-2022. The main issues are problems at the Russian labour market in 2020-2023, and measures of their state regulation taken at the federal and regional levels. The paper considers the measures of state support for the Russian labour market during the COVID-19 pandemic and economic restrictions, and describes their consequences. Also there is an assessment of the role of secondary vocational education system, implementation of state programs and national projects, i.e. the federal projects «Professional», «Young Professionals». Paper listed the professions and specialties in colleges of the Ivanovo and Yaroslavl regions. On the example of the Ivanovo region we consider the establishment of educational and production centres (clusters). The study considers goals, objectives, stages, directions of development, institutional environment, services of the National Qualifications System of the Russian Federation, the essence of Independent Qualification Assessment in details. The study also highlights the role of the state for a secondary vocational education system development.

The paper presents research on the problem of reducing poverty in Russian Federation. The purpose of the research is to assess the prospects for achieving the national goal of twofold poverty level reducing in Russia by 2030 compared to the 2017. However, in terms of dynamics to the approaches to the poverty, it will be possible to achieve the twofold poverty reduction by 2030 compared to the 2017. It can be implemented in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 474 on 21 July 2020. Moreover, it is not the problem solving; the measurement scale transformation is not the proper tool that can eliminate (or at least reduce) poverty in society. The practical significance of the research is the introduction of a differentiated progressive taxation scale and development of favourable conditions for the intensive development of high-tech and competitive production as the most effective tools for poverty reduction. It will cause an increase in the population’s income, strengthening of the national distributive and redistributive functions. Additionally, it allows ones’ to reduce the income gap between the richest and poorest segments of the population (reduction of the Gini index).

Abstract More than 90% of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cases are driven by activating mutations in KRAS that drive it into an active, GTP-bound state (KRAS(ON)), producing excessive signaling via MAPK and other effector pathways. RMC-7977 is a potent inhibitor of GTP-bound RAS proteins (RAS(ON)), including both wild type and mutant variants of KRAS, NRAS, and HRAS. The related investigational agent, RMC-6236, is a first-in-class, potent, orally bioavailable, RASMULTI(ON) inhibitor currently in Phase 1/1b clinical trials (NCT05379985). Exposure to RMC-7977 suppressed the MAPK biomarker p-ERK, reduced cell growth, and induced apoptosis in multiple human RAS-addicted cancer cell lines. Assessment of RMC-7977 in a series of PDAC preclinical model systems revealed broad anti-tumor activity and treatment was well tolerated at translatable doses. The K-rasLSL.G12D/+, p53LSL.R172H/+, Pdx1Cretg/+ (KPC) autochthonous mouse model was utilized to study the effects of Ras-GTP inhibition in both tumor and normal tissues. At doses that drove anti-tumor activity, RMC-7977 dosing produced a metronomic effect on RAS signaling in tumor and normal tissue, with full pathway inhibition at 4 h post treatment that was restored by 24 h. This pattern yielded tumor-selective effects on apoptosis and proliferation, consistent with RAS oncogene addition in PDAC. RMC-7977 treatment drove regressions and an unprecedented ~3-fold extension of overall survival in KPC mice. After an initial response, all tumors eventually developed resistance on treatment, affording the opportunity to study acquired resistance mechanisms to RAS-GTP inhibition. Strikingly, in all resistant tumors, acute inhibition of MAPK and PI3K signaling was still apparent following treatment. These results indicate that RAS signaling re-activation mechanisms that have been reported as clinical mechanisms of resistance to mutant-selective KRASG12C inhibitors (e.g. second-site mutations or upregulation of upstream RTK) may be insufficient to confer resistance to a compound that inhibits all RAS isoforms. Rather, in this model we observed activation of alternative oncogenic mechanisms downstream of RAS effector signaling, including frequent focal amplification of Myc, focal amplification of Jun, and/or activation of Yap/Taz/Tead signaling in most resistant KPC tumors. Together these results demonstrate preclinical activity of RMC-7977 at tolerable doses, producing unprecedented responses even in highly chemoresistant PDAC models such as the KPC mouse. The observed range of potential resistance mechanisms suggests that RAS-GTP inhibition imposes a narrow evolutionary path to the development of acquired resistance in this context. These preclinical findings may help inform the ongoing development of investigational RAS inhibitors and the design of potential combinatorial treatment strategies to forestall resistance. Abstract Background: Comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) tests have been nationally reimbursed in Japan since 2019, and all test results must be discussed by molecular tumor boards (MTBs). More than 60,000 patients have taken the CGP tests at over 200 government-designated hospitals by November 2023. Streamlining decision-making by MTBs and standardizing interpretation of test results is important. We evaluated the performance of Chrovis, an annotation algorithm for reporting CGP tests. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the reporting process of all approved CGP tests done at The University of Tokyo Hospital and its 12 affiliated hospitals between December 2019 and November 2023. Chrovis referenced several public knowledge databases and used natural language processing to annotate each genetic variant and generated reports using the automated program. The MTB reviewed all reports with the addition of clinical information and made any necessary changes Recommendations on disclosure of germline findings were made in accordance with the national guideline. Results: Among the 2,819 Chrovis reports created, 1,927 were tumor-only FoundationOne CDx (F1CDx), 483 were tumor/normal paired NCC Oncopanel (NOP), and 409 were FoundationOne Liquid CDx (F1Liquid) panels. Among them, 603 changes in 496 reports (17.6% of all reports) were made by the MTB. The most common type of change was germline disclosure with 208 changes (7.4%), followed by clinical trial information (196 changes, 7.0%) and pathogenicity (107 changes, 3.8%). Gene alterations that led to most changes in germline disclosure were TP53, SMAD4, CDKN2A, TERT, and NF2 (42, 22, 16, 13, and 13 changes, respectively). Changes in clinical trial information were frequently observed in TP53, NF1, BRAF, ERBB2, and KRAS (25, 20, 19, 16, and 16 changes, respectively). F1CDx required the greatest number of changes (404/1927, 21.0%) followed by F1Liquid (53/409, 13.0%) and NOP (39/483, 8.1%) (p < 0.001). Changes to germline disclosure were made in 9.1% of F1CDx reports, 5.4% of F1Liquid reports, and 2.1% of NOP reports (p < 0.001). Changes to clinical trial information were made in 8.3%, 4.4%, and 3.9%, respectively (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Chrovis-generated CGP reports did not require any changes in 82%s, suggesting that artificial intelligence reporting may lessen the burden of MTBs while contributing to its standardization. Recommendation for germline disclosure requires manual supervision, and improvements in clinical trial databases are required to correctly recommend genomically matched trials to patients. 2024 marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding surgeon, scientist, teacher and public figure, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Nikolai Ilyich Blinov. N. I. Blinov was born on February 18, 1899 in Uglich, Yaroslavl province. In 1924, he completed his studies at the Petrograd State Institute of Medical Knowledge (GIMZ) and was left as a resident at the Department of General Surgery. From 1927 to 1931, N. I. Blinov worked as a surgical resident at the Institute of Surgical Tuberculosis. In 1932, he was appointed the head of the serological laboratory at the Research Institute of Blood Transfusion. According to the totality of scientific works, in 1935, N. I. Blinov was awarded the degree of candidate of medical sciences, and a year later, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic “The doctrine of blood groups and its significance in the clinic”. In 1939, he was elected the associate professor of the Surgical clinic No. 2 of the Leningrad State Institute for Advanced Medical Training. During the Great Patriotic War, he was the chief surgeon of several hospitals in besieged Leningrad; he continued to work in the State Institute for Advanced Medical Training for the training of medical personnel. In 1951, he was elected the professor of the surgical clinic No. 2 of the Leningrad State Institute for Advanced Medical Training, and since 1952 – Head of the Department of General Surgery of the Leningrad State Institute for Advanced Medical Training and headed it until 1968. In the period from 1954 to 1959, he served as director of the State Institute for Advanced Medical Training. He is the author of more than 200 scientific papers; 2 doctoral and 20 PhD theses have been defended under his supervision. N.I. Blinov paid great attention to public activities, was elected the member of the Leningrad City Council of Workers’ Deputies, the deputy of the Smolninsky district Council of Workers’ Deputies. He was awarded orders and medals of the USSR, Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1967). He retired in September 1968. He died on April 15, 1971. He was buried at the Bolsheokhtinsky cemetery in St. Petersburg.

The paper deals with the study of the activities of government bodies to attract women to the grassroots management apparatus in the 1920s, as well as consideration of the implementation of this work using the example of the Komi Autonomous Region. The study considers certain normative legal acts concerning the involvement of female workers and peasants to work in Soviet government bodies. They legislated gender equality between men and women and proposed to select the most capable delegates to work in the grassroots authorities. The most important aspects of the functioning of the Volost Eexecutive Committees are revealed, including a description of the directions of socio-economic and cultural work. Data on the number of women in the grassroots Soviet apparatus are considered. In general, women’s social activity increased: from 1922 to 1927 their number in the Volost Executive Committees of the country increased from 0.3% to 10.1%, participants in the elections to the Soviets of the Komi Autonomous Region per 100 people from 1924 to 1927 - from 8% to 45% and members of the Presidium of the Volost Executive Committee from 1925 to 1927 – from 0.7% to 2.1%. In the 1920s, the prerequisites were laid for increased activity and a gradual increase in the number of women in government.

Abstract. In Finland, auroral photography started in 1927 at the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (SGO) with the initiative of famous Norwegian scientist Carl Störmer. In less than 2 years about 600 photographs of auroras were taken at Sodankylä. Some of the images were obtained simultaneously at auxiliary stations for parallactic determinations of the height of auroral arcs. Most of the pictures of auroras were lost in the destruction of the SGO during the war in 1944. About 200 images were rescued in the archive of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, where they were recently found. These pictures of auroras are the first ones taken in Finland. These photographs are now digitized and archived in the SGO. During the polar year period 1932–1933, auroral photography was mostly discontinued, but visual observations of auroras were made instead at several sites in Lapland. The main sources of information about the history of auroral images are handwritten notebooks of Eyvind Sucksdorff for 1927–1929. They contain relevant data for each photograph (date, exposure time, orientation of camera etc.). In Appendix A there are tables showing the dates of rescued auroral photographs as well as the lost ones. In Finland, Sucksdorff's contribution to studies of auroras was a pioneering effort with minimal resources. Regular photographing of auroras started in Finland during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) 1957–1958.

Abstract: This article places the landmark 1986 Supreme Court of Canada decision E. (Mrs.) v. Eve within its avowedly anti-eugenic context. Then it compares the trial record and appellate documents of Eve to the notorious 1927 American case Buck v. Bell . It outlines the legal reasoning of the Eve decision, its reception, and the different trajectories of law in the US, the UK, and Australia. These multiple points of historical comparison expose a series of unresolved eugenic continuities in the politics of youth, sex, and disability. The interpretation challenges more conventional definitions, periodization, and understandings of eugenics, drawing attention to the formation of "liberal" eugenics in the late twentieth century.

ABSTRACT: Little research has been published on promotional (promo) dictionaries despite large numbers being issued over the years, especially in the US. They take many forms, but all are marketing tools meant to sell a particular product. What they promote does not always accord with the function of a dictionary; indeed, the disparity is often very marked. This article undertakes a preliminary survey, explaining the surprising range and nature of the products promoted as well as the characteristics of some of the dictionaries. We consider in particular the earlier examples, from about 1877–1927, though using promo dictionaries is by no means over, and they continue to be produced. The dictionaries discussed here are largely general lexicographical works, not specialist.

Abstract: For generations, Mexican American and Latino students, mostly from San Antonio, El Paso, and South Texas border towns, have graduated from St. Mary’s University. Walking a fine line between cultural assimilation and seeking self-defined approaches to integration in U.S. society, activists among them sought a campus cultural and curricular environment that accounted for their traditions and identity. They encountered some religious and lay faculty and staff who recognized their special heritage-related culture and identity, but at the same time, the university remained mostly ambivalent about institutionalizing this diversity into campus life and curricula. As their numbers grew to approximately sixty-five percent in 2000, St. Mary’s eventually took on the designation of a Hispanic Serving Institution. This historical process of acknowledging the importance of ethnicity raises questions about how St. Mary’s University and other Catholic universities with Latino enrollments can holistically educate ethnic Mexican and Latino students in ways that speak to their history, culture, and religious traditions.

Abstract In this paper, we want to present the genesis of Stanisław Leśniewski’s mereology. Although ‘mereology’ comes from theword ‘part’, mereology arose as a theory of collective classes. That is why we present the differences between the concepts of being a distributive class and being a collective class. Next, we present Leśniewski’s original mereology from 1927, but with a modern approach. Leśniewski was inspired to create his concept of classes and their elements by Russell’s antinomy. To face it, Leśniewski had to define the concept of being an element of based on the concept of being part of. Leśniewski showed that in his theory, there is no equivalent to Russell’s antinomy. We will show that his solution has nothing to do with the original approach because, in both cases, we are talking about objects of a different kind. Russell’s original antinomy concerned distributive classes, and Leśsniewski’s considerations concerned collective classes.

Subsequently, he presents the solution adopted in the Polish Code of Obligations in the context of the regulation of the aforementioned legal systems. For this purpose, the article is based on the legal state and the statements of the legal doctrine from the period before the entry into force of the Polish Code of Obligations.

ABSTRACT: The matriarch of Theosophy, Helena P. Blavatsky (1831–1891), wrote a short devotional text called The Voice of the Silence (1889) towards the end of her life that she intended as scripture and which has been endorsed with enthusiasm by individuals both within and outside the parent Theosophical Society. This article approaches the production of The Voice of the Silence as a case study in the construction of scripture, outlining the work’s doctrines (particularly regarding kundalini and the higher idhhi s), describing the controversies that impelled Blavatsky to publish it, and exploring some of her key literary sources. It reveals that Blavatsky strategically rewrote an earlier publication, Light on the Path (1885), by the English Theosophist Mabel Collins (1851–1927). Blavatsky enriched her writing of The Voice of the Silence with material taken from a handful of articles on Hindu thought, including Yoga, written by Indian Theosophists and others. She responded to challenges to her authority by producing a new Theosophical scripture that addressed issues of spiritual and temporal power.

Abstract: After the flood of 1927, the US government decided to master the Mississippi River. Nowhere was this state-sponsored determination more evident than in the lower Mississippi River delta. An historical examination of a cluster of Catholic churches in Pointe Coupée Parish, Louisiana, permits some understanding of how physical and material alterations to landscapes are not easily traced, especially when we consider the temporal and spatial scales of change to the Mississippi over the last one hundred years. In that time, Catholics of Pointe Coupée Parish managed to retain, erase, and revise aspects of their bonds to a river once central to the lives of their ancestors. This is not at all surprising, as the fallibility of memory is made apparent every time we try to tell stories about our pasts. Pointe Coupée Parish is one site where we can explore how alterations to a landscape have an impact not only on the trajectory of a Catholic community's future, but also on access to its past. Absences of memory in the living, combined with the erasure of material remains in modified landscapes, challenge us to consider how we might account for the relationship between Catholicism and the built environment throughout American history.

English Abstract: The ties between Croats and Czechs, based on common Slavic roots, can be traced back to the distant past. From the eighteenth century, especially while belonging to the same state, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Czechs immigrated in large numbers to the territory of today's Croatia. First came farmers in search of free land to cultivate, and later craftsmen, entrepreneurs, intellectuals, and artists arrived. The subject of cooperation between Croatians and Czechs in the sound recording industry can be traced from the paper labels on recordings, which reveal that many Czech records were produced in Zagreb, while many Croatian records were produced in Ústí nad Labem and Prague in what is today the Czech Republic. On the Croatian side, there is some literature on the first years of recorded sound in Croatia, as well as articles in periodicals from the period and scarce archival sources. As a participant in a scientific project on the Croatian industry of gramophone records (the record industry in Croatia from 1927 to the end of the 1950s), I conducted comprehensive research in Prague to trace the bilateral links between Croatian Edison Bell Penkala (EBP) and Elektroton and Czech gramophone companies (Esta, Ultraphon, etc.); on companies that recorded Croatian artists before EBP; and on the cooperation between Czech Gramofonové závody and Jugoton at the beginning of their existence. Colleagues provided insight into the available literature, documentation, and results of their research for the project Novy Fonograf ( Novy Fonograf : nasluchejme zvuku historie. Additional information was also found from the Zagreb company Croatia Records (formerly Jugoton) and the Archive of Yugoslavia in Belgrade. In this article, I will explain the flow of cooperation between the two countries on the production of shellac gramophone recordings in the time of world wars and turbulent political changes. French Abstract: Les liens entre Croates et Tchèques, fondés sur des racines slaves communes, peuvent être retracés depuis un passé lointain. Dès le XVIIIe siècle, surtout lorsqu'ils appartenaient au même État, l'Empire austro-hongrois, les Tchèques ont immigré en grand nombre sur le territoire de l'actuelle Croatie. Les premiers arrivants furent des agriculteurs à la recherche de terres libres à cultiver, et plus tard des artisans, des entrepreneurs, des intellectuels et des artistes. Das Thema der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Kroaten und Tschechen in der Tonträgerindustrie lässt sich anhand der Labels auf Tonträgern nachvollziehen; aus ihnen geht hervor, dass viele tschechische Schallplatten in Zagreb produziert wurden, während viele kroatische Schallplatten in Ústí nad Labem und Prag, also in der heutigen tschechischen Republik, hergestellt wurden. The publication presents for the first time the B. Baradin’s theses to A. Dorzhiev’s lecture that was supposed to be delivered at the international Buddhist exhibition in Leningrad in 1927. A. Dorzhiev was a famous Buryat lama who received the academic title of Geshe (the highest philosophical academic degree in the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism) upon completion of his philosophical education in the monasteries of Mongolia and Tibet. After 1918, he was involved in organizational issues of the Buddhist Sangha in Russia. B. Baradin was an academic scientist and public figure, a professor at St. Petersburg University, and the author of studies on the history and teachings of Tibetan Buddhism. After the revolution of 1917, he began working in Buryatia in various administrative positions, focusing on the organization of the scientific and cultural life of the Republic. Their main idea is that the modern world consists of the two equal parts - East and West, unification of which is possible and even necessary for the further development of humanity. The system-forming teaching of the East is Buddhism; and the lecture hold on those aspects of Buddhist philosophy that could be compared with the teachings of the West. Four points are highlighted: 1) Buddhism is comparable to Darwin’s theory in that both consider humans in the context of all living beings in an evolutionary manner; 2) Buddhism, like science, accepts the determinism principle; 3) the Buddhist concept of shunya is similar to the relativistic principles of physics; and 4) the system of Buddhist psychotechniques is similar to the theory of reflexology. B. Baradin concludes that Indo-Buddhist culture and European culture are complementary and their rapprochement will bring us closer to a truly universal culture. The theses mentioned here are, apparently, the first systematic exposition of the views of neo-Buddhists-renewalists on the points of convergence between Buddhist and Western cultures.

Bu hekimlerden birisi de Çanakkale Savaşı’nda tanıştığı Dr. Hasan Ragıp Erensel’dir. Dr. Erensel, 1881 yılında Selanik yakınlarındaki Nevrekop kasabasında doğmuştur. Mekteb-i Tıbbiye ’den 1905 yılında tabip yüzbaşı olarak mezun olmuş ve orduda göreve başlamıştır. 1912 yılında Almanya’ya kursa gitmiş ve bir yıl sonra İstanbul’a dönmüştür. 6 Ocak 1915 tarihinde, Çanakkale Grubu Sertabibliği muavinliğine atanmıştır. Çanakkale Savaşı sırasında Avusturya asıllı hemşire olan eşi Anna Schwartz, bir bombalamada şehit olmuştur. The article is devoted to the study of the representation of the processes included in the extensive set of measures called ‘emancipation of the mountain woman’ on the pages of the magazine ‘Tru-zhenitsa Severnogo Kavkaza’, the official press organ of the women’s department of the North Caucasian regional executive committee on the example of work with Circassian women. This study examines the demonstration to the public (in particular, to the female masses) of the results of the Soviet authorities’ activities regarding the Circassian women who inhabited the territory of several autonomous regions of the Soviet Union: Adygeya (Cherkessia), Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia: it highlights its various directions such as education, the elimination of domestic and political illiteracy, the involvement of women in industrial work, the opening not only of clubs for women but also of artels and workshops. The article presents the materials of the magazine reflecting the work of the Soviet authorities with Circassian women for 1925-1927, up to the time when the magazine was renamed.

The helminth community of the Green toad Bufotes viridis (Laurenti, 1768) from the population inhabiting the Caspian basin on the territory of the Republic of Dagestan is characterized. The study was carried out according to the method of full helminthological autopsy. Six species of helminths belonging to two types have been registered: Nematoda (4) and Acanthocephala (2). Of these, the nematode Neoxysomatium caucasicum Sharpilo, 1974 and the acanthocephalan Macracanthorhynchus catulinus Kostylev, 1927, larvae were found for the first time in Russia, and Oswaldocruzia ukrainae Iwanitzky, 1928 was found in the Caspian region and the Republic of Dagestan. For the first two species of helminths, the Green toad is registered as a new host. The composition of helminths is distinguished by the absence of flatworms (monogeneans, cestodes, trematodes) and is formed exclusively by nematodes and acanthocephalans, of which 2 species are endemic. These facts point out the unique nature of the helminth fauna of the Green toad in the Republic of Dagestan.

Cyclopoids are an extremely diverse and abundant group of arthropods found in Lake Baikal. Diacyclops Kiefer, 1927 is the most species-rich and highly endemic genus among them. The morphological characteristics of the three Baikal species, D. improcerus, D. galbinus and D. versutus, show considerable differences. Therefore, it is worth considering whether all specimens identified as versutus, galbinus, or improcerus belong to the same species. Molecular and morphological analyzes were conducted on Diacyclops from Lake Baikal, which are similar to D. improcerus, D. galbinus and D. versutus. Three molecular markers of mtDNA (COI, 12S) and nuclear DNA (ITS1) revealed three clusters corresponding to the division of specimens into three groups based on morphological characteristics. Each of these groups comprises multiple genetic lineages. We assume that the improcerus-, galbinus-, and versutus- groups are closely related species complexes. The use of PCA for morphometric indices based on linear measurements, which are widely used in Cyclopoida taxonomy, is limited in separating closely related species within species complexes. Micrographs and line drawings of a fourth swimming leg (P4) and an antenna from specimens of the versutus- and improcerus- groups are provided. These images reveal significant differences in the spinule ornamentation of the coxopodite of P4 and the basipodite of the antenna between specimens of different genetic lineages.

In the article analyses the epistolary heritage of the historian, bibliophile, bibliographer, art historian and collector, academician N.P. Likhachev (1862—1936), which is kept in the Manuscripts Department of the Russian State Library. A total of 109 letters and telegrams (dating from 1885 to 1927) have been discovered. These texts contain diverse and reliable information about the main events of the biography, scientific interests and personality of the eminent scholar, including the discussion in connection with the publication of his fundamental monograph on the the hierarchy of 16th century dyaks (1888), his contribution to the study of icon painting, his publishing activities, his cooperation in public organisations, his attitude to the book as a cultural phenomenon, and his bibliophile preferences. Most of the letters are in the fund of the antiquarian book dealer P.P. Shibanov and concern the formation of the historian’s library, the purchase of books, criteria for their selection, prices for antiquarian editions, and the distribution of his own works. Special attention is paid to the fate of N.P. Likhachev after 1917, first of all to the difficulties he faced in his scientific activity and everyday life. The epistolary sources significantly expand and clarify the ideas of modern science about the development of many areas of Russian humanitarian knowledge: bibliology, bibliophilia, archaeography, art history, medieval studies, source studies, etc.

Abstract. Based on long-term observational and reanalysis datasets from 1901 through 2014, this study investigates the characteristics and physical causes of the interdecadal variations in the summer precipitation over the East Asian monsoon boundary zone (EAMBZ), which is a peculiar domain defined from the perspective of the interplay between climatic systems (i.e., mid-latitude westerly and East Asian summer monsoon). Observational evidence reveals that, similarly to previous studies, the EAMBZ precipitation featured prominent interdecadal fluctuations, e.g., with dry summers during the periods preceding 1927, 1939–1945, 1968–1982, and 1998–2010 and wet summers during the periods of 1928–1938, 1946–1967, and 2011 onwards. Further analyses identify that, amongst the major interdecadal oceanic forcings (e.g., Atlantic multidecadal oscillation and Pacific decadal oscillation), the Indian Ocean basin mode (IOBM) is a significant oceanic forcing responsible for the interdecadal variations of the EAMBZ precipitation, playing an independent and critical modulation role. When the cold phase of the IOBM occurs, an anomalous cyclonic circulation is excited around the northeast corner of the tropical Indian Ocean, which further induces a north-low–south-high meridional seesaw pattern over the Northeast China–subtropical western Pacific (SWP) sector. Such seesaw pattern is conducive to the enhanced EAMBZ precipitation by linking favorable environments for the transportation of water vapor from the SWP and the convergence over the EAMBZ at interdecadal timescales. For this reason, a physical–empirical model for the EAMBZ precipitation is developed in terms of the IOBM cooling. Despite the fact that the extreme summer EAMBZ precipitation cannot be captured by this model, it can still well capture its interdecadal fluctuations and reflect their steady relationship. The key physical pathway connecting the IOBM cooling with the interdecadal variations of the summer EAMBZ precipitation is supported by the numerical results based on the large ensemble experiment and the Indian Ocean pacemaker experiment. Our findings may provide new insights into the understanding of the causes of the interdecadal variations in the summer EAMBZ precipitation, which may favor the long-term policy decision-making for the local hydrometeorological planning.

The problem of this study lies in evaluating the methodological approach of Yuli Eichenwald (1872—1928) as a theatrical critic and theorist, specifically his writings on Shakespearean productions both in Russia and abroad. Known primarily as a literary critic, Eichenwald also wrote about theater, but his works in this area have been largely unexplored. The aim of this study is to shed light on Eichenwald's principles of theatrical criticism. The material used consists of little-known articles by Eichenwald on theater theory and Shakespearean productions from 1903 to 1927. The research employs hermeneutic and comparative methods. The findings reveal that Eichenwald demonstrates a literature-centric position in his articles on theater, according to which theater is merely an illustration of literary works. He increasingly uses productions as a pretext to discuss Shakespeare, often without mentioning the actors or directors. Eichenwald’s perception of theater as a mediator, as an auxiliary device between the play and the reader, leads to his rejection of the concept of directorial theater and the denial of the director as the author of the production. The authors conclude that Eichenwald’s theatrical criticism is a logical outcome of literature-centric judgments about theater, from Aristotle to Hegel, where theater is considered as part of literature.

The article examines the history of the book “Yal-Mal” (1930) by the forgotten Kharbin poet, writer, and journalist Vasily Stepanovich Loginov (1891–1945/1946?). The author uses descriptive and historical-functional research methods. The article focuses on the publication of Loginov’s letter to Mikhail Osorgin, where he responds to Osorgin’s opinions regarding his impressions of “Yal-Mal.” In 1931, Loginov purposefully distributed the book among émigrés. The appendix to the article also contains other reviews and responses to the book that appeared in both eastern (Harbin, Shanghai) and western (Prague) émigré publications. Also, the book appears among publications received by the Parisian journal “Sovremennye Zapiski” for a review. The critics who wrote about the book did not appreciate the dystopian story “Yal-Mal (Half-Rotted Letters in a Box),” however they noted the writer’s skill in addressing Siberian and Ural themes. They also mentioned the book’s cover that reproduced Mikhail Vrubel’s painting “Pan,” and concluded the writer’s inherent pantheism and the literary influence of Knut Hamsun. The author’s hopes for recognition and wide dissemination of the book have failed, but its fate allows us to speak of “Yal-Mal” as an accomplished “literary fact.” The article makes a significant clarification to the writer’s bibliography: the mention of his book “Kharbin in Verse (Everyday Pictures),” printed under the pen name “Captain Cook” in Paris, allows to set the year of its publication as 1927 (not 1932 as it was considered earlier).

This article examines a highly-regarded but little-studied work of the major American novelist John Dos Passos, the travel memoir Orient Express (1927), the account of a 1922 journey from Constantinople, through the South Caucasus and through Iran and Iraq to the Levant. Situating Orient Express within the development of Dos Passos’s distinctive brand of experimental, modernist prose culminating in the U.S.A. trilogy (1930–1937), attention is drawn to the visual and auditory landscapes of the text. Dos Passos’s use of various modernist devices in his portrayal of Near Eastern cities — including the use of overlapping perspectives, interacting planes of light and color, the observer-in-motion and the superimposition of real and imagined city landscapes — approach what has been termed the “proto-cubist” or “proto-expressionist” effect typical of his urban American novels. Orient Express is also characterized by its unique auditory landscape, a patchwork of overheard speech which prefigures Dos Passos’s mature conception of a fragmentary, “objective” art in which authorial agency consists primarily in ordering various strands of external discourse. These verbal and material planes, image and history, intersect in a crucial meditation on material artifacts abandoned by their owners in the wake of the Red Army’s invasion of Georgia, which reflects a conception of the “the writer’s vital role in opposing the dehumanizing impact of mechanization,” and provides important context for the much remarked-upon transition in Dos Passos’s political views toward the end of the 1930s.

This article studies the ways of constructing the image of China in the travelogue “The Golden Ship. Wanderings” (1927) by Yuri Galich. Structurally, the study consists of two parts. Proceeding from the theory of imagology and using the historical and literary methods, we conducted an overview analysis of the formation and evolution of the image of China in Russian literature and culture of the 15th–19th centuries. The study shows that under the influence of national ideology and public collective consciousness, the image of China in Russian travelogue literature was constantly developing and changing, different writers showing its qualities from different points of view in their works. The second part examines in detail Yuri Galich’s travelogue “The Golden Ship. Wanderings” and interprets the image system and cultural values of China rooted in Russian cultural tradition, exploring the spiritual essence of the image of China in Russian travelogue literature and the cultural identity embedded in it. In order to clarify Yuri Galich’s writing strategy, his work is compared with another travelogue of this time, B. Pilnyak’s “China Story”. Yuri Galich portrays a relatively objective and realistic image of China in an affable manner, while his disapproving attitude towards Chinese art reflects a strong sense of his own cultural confidence. In contrast, B. Pilnyak’s image of China is completely negative, reflecting the influence of European thought in portraying foreign countries.

The article aims to find out how the story of Dasha, described by Shmelev in the letters to O.A. Bredius-Subbotina in 1941–1942, was reflected in the writer’s work. The letters, the memoirs, and the historical materials allow us to reconstruct the biography of D.V. Zamotina. D.V. Zamotina’s letter to I.S. Shmelev dated May 1, 1937, from the archive of the Alexander Solzhenitsyn House of Russian Abroad Archive is introduced into scientific circulation. The article proves that the Zamotin family significantly contributed to the preservation and transfer to the national archives of the writer’s prerevolutionary heritage. The story of Dasha is comparable with his stories “The Grapes” (1913), “In the Manor” (1914), novels The Story of a Love (1927), and The Heavenly Paths (1937, 1948). The article notes the similarity of the portraits of the heroines, their social status, the individual details, the scenes, the images, and the motifs. The article takes into account modern literary works, which analyze the considered images and the motifs. The results show that Dasha Zamotina is the embodiment of the “Shmelev’s girl.” In conclusion, the article considers the work of the writer as a whole, highlights his favorite characters, and notes the similarity of pre-revolutionary and emigrant pathos — “organic democracy”; for this reason, Dasha can be called the Muse of Shmelev with a capital letter.

This book written by Sergei Kan is dedicated to Lev Shternberg (1961–1927), who was a major Russian ethnographer and public figure, one of the founders of the so-called Leningrad school. The Russian translation of the book is reviewed. The large-scale study, rich in archival sources from all possible collections (American Philosophical Society, American Museum of Natural History, the Kunstkammer, RAS Archives, etc.), has been written in the best traditions of the prominent historian George Stocking’s approach. The reviewer notes several undoubted merits of Kan’s work. The main one is an attempt to place the Russian scholar’s research in the context of the Western anthropology of his time. One of the most profound ideas of the book concerns the assessment of Morgan’s influence on Sternberg’s work, and, in a broader perspective, on the development of the social sciences in Russia and the USSR, where, according to the author, social evolutionism played a much more progressive role than in Europe or the USA. That theory served rather to confirm the necessity of social reform, and neither then nor later was it associated with the reaction in the natural sciences, Eurocentrism, and white racism that Boas saw in it. At the same time, the edition under review contains a few inaccuracies and factual errors, some of which were already present in the original edition, while others have arisen due to a not entirely accurate translation.
