Abstract:
Knowledge of Portuguese Campodeidae is scant, with only 7 previous papers (Wygodzinsky 1944a; Condé 1951; Sendra 1990; Sendra & Moreno 2004, 2006; Gama et al. 2000a,b), with a total of 13 epigean species: Eutrichocampa Silvestri (1 sp.), Campodea Westwood (6 spp.) and Podocampa Silvestri (6 spp.). Three of these species are endemic to mainland Portugal: C. machadoi Condé, 1951, P. jorgei Wygodzinsky, 1944 and P. seabrai Wygodzinsky, 1944. Only one species, Podocampa cardini Silvestri, 1932, has been recorded from a Portuguese cave environment (Condé 1955); this species previously had been known as an epigean species from Sierra de Aralar in Navarra, Spain (Silvestri 1932). Intensive sampling efforts over the last four years in Portuguese karstic caves revealed the presence of a morphospecies originally assigned to Podocampa fragiloides Silvestri, 1932, which is often found in moist epigean environments of the Iberian Peninsula influenced by the Atlantic Ocean (A. Sendra, pers. obs.).

Abstract:
The meaning of contemporary Realism (1969).

Abstract:
This study is an exploration of the social engineering of the single-party era through the lenses of state officials in their work of propagating the nationalist state ideology. It aims to bring the state officials, in their (re)production of the beliefs and values as products and as the (re)producers of the state ideology, to the forefront. More specifically, it studies the negotiations and the contestations between state officials in regards to three main social structures which are (ethno)nationalism, womanhood, and laicism. A fourth social structure is the hierarchical relations within the state bureaucracy. A deeper understanding of the social engineering through the lenses of state officials is provided through a discursive close reading of the archival data regarding the activities of Halkevleri (People’s Houses), which were state institutions through which the state ideology was propagated to the people.

Abstract:
This research tends to demonstrate that, beyond the picture of the performer of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music, Glenn Gould, the pianist, has developed through his numerous writings a real musicological thought which is distinguished by a strong coherence ; its roots are in fact to be found in Arnold Schoenberg’s thought, the composer whose influence was the most important for Gould. We intend here to propose an analytical and critical observation of Glenn Gould’s musicological thought by using the principles upon which he had himself set his thought, which are : justified reasoning, re-creation spirit, inductive concept and scientific musicology. With that aim, we used a logical progression examining successively the following themes : the method, the musical creation, the musical performance, the criticism, the pedagogy and finally the recording

Abstract:
This dissertation consists in synthesizing the theme of the economy in Gide. By taking as main corpus the works of the end of the 19th century, from Paludes (1895) to L'Immoraliste (1902) we try to show that the interest of the author for the economy is not only noticeable in his last period, that Les Faux-monnayeurs (1926) represent, but also at the beginning of his career. During the period under consideration, the writer has access to several questions concerning the economy of expenditure, as certain contemporary and modem ideologists (Nietzsche, Mauss, Bataille, Derrida, etc. ) take them seriously, and one can confirm here the attitude of the author who tries to reconcile capitalism with the counter-economy. Besides, Gide reacts, in his own way, to the politico-economic tendencies under the Third Republic during the 1890s, notably to the solidarism which Charles Gide, uncle economist of Gide, promotes and to the crisis of the gold currency which the uncle questions since the same period. Gide's reaction presupposes his interest for the social and monetary economy that the republicans of the period adopt. Moreover, beyond the "economy of the ego" which constitutes the foundation of the gidien economy, Gide presents the theme of the libidinal economy and the mintage of the body, the theme that allows us to consider the affinity with the thought of Pierre Klossowski. By replacing the "economic" texts of Gide in the historic and intellectual context of the time and by considering them possibly from the modern point of view, we point out the peculiarity and the topicality of the thought of the author as well as the impact of diverse questions which this thought implies

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the Sanusiyya order, in which particular emphasis is placed on its role as a resistance movement. Based on a survey of the social, economic, religious and political activities of this sufi brotherhood and its involvement in the tribal system of the North Africa during the first three decades of this century, an attempt will be made to identify on the one hand the factors that contributed to the strength of its resistance to Italian invasion, and on the other, the elements that led to its failure. It is argued that its initial success in the resistance benefited from the network of the zawiyas where ikhwan from different tribes were integrated socially and economically in accordance with strong Islamic values. However, lack of military training and weapons, dependency on a prominent figure, competing ambitions within the Sanusi family and geographical distance ultimately weakened the resistance.

Abstract:
In which way does a cineaste transforme his or her reel self into works? How can we recognize this self-image in the films? This study concerns the autobiographical expression in the films of sevral french cineastes, such as Jean Cocteau, François Truffaut, and Romain Goupil, those who intended constantly to create their own cinematic double all over their works. We will see the distinctive character of self-expression films through the various aspects of cineastes’ introspective gaze : those toward his « another self », toward his own death, etc. These gazes might be also examined in relations with the various ways that we can hear the polyphonic voices of cineastes

Abstract:
What kind of things are the reasons we use to explain our behavior? Are they material entities in the brain, causing actions? Are they, as Davidson says, physical entities that we cannot identify in physical terms? Are we forced to accept Cartesian dualism? This thesis proposes another answer. Reasons are not experienced. They are sought through action and conceptualization. They may be said to guide our actions, but not as events which cause actions; rather, they serve, over time, to construct coherent behavior and stable personal identity. We defend here the Wittgensteinian thesis that reasons are not causes. We show that it is consistent with monism. The difference between acting for this or that reason does exist in reality, but it is a reality that we construct and pursue, not one that we experience and name. This is because when we give reasons, we speak before knowing, in order to make something exist. Thus we argue, against Kim, that it is possible to be a monist, to defend the importance of rational explanations, and to deny the possibility of reducing reasons to causes. Indeed, the knowledge necessary to do so would be far beyond the knowledge we require to speak the language of reasons. This conception of reasons as things that we seek rather than thing that we experience has important consequences in ethics. Namely, that the evaluation of reasons or intentions only makes sense when one attempts to act appropriately; it is irrelevant in defining past actions. This means that the very idea of merit is problematic, and that morality itself is something we must constantly work to make possible

Abstract:
Ever since the judicial reform in late Qing, all aspects linking to China law reforms were forced to be aligned with the national goal of abolishing the unequal treaties between China and foreign powers. Forty years' legal history, as the epochal era in shaping the modern Chinese legal system, became an integral part of history of the national movement against unequal treaties. Within the period where Ju Zheng was dominant in the sphere of law, the judiciary under party control and the nation-wide discussions on China new legal system were two successive processes of the national movement: the former was meant to create solidarity and political space needed for the anti-unequal-treaties movement, and the latter was measured to offer cultural continuity and identity consensus essential for national autonomy en course toward modernity. What's more, nationalism became the overarching ideology in legal sphere during Ju's times, and its repercussions helped foment a solid legal nationalization movement. This movement was embodied in organizations at the national level, namely the National Conference of Justices and the National Association in Jurisprudence of Republic of China. Second, the movement has two essential features: Party control over the judiciary and building of a new Chinese legal system. In this legal nationalization movement, Ju Zheng was the central figure and leader from the beginning right through the end.
For more than sixteen years (1932-1948) Mr. Ju Zheng was the most influential figure of the national judiciary under the Nanjing Regime, making the case of his legal thoughts and practices highly illustrative of the legal history of modern China. Building on Mr. Ju's personal background and experiences, this thesis attempts to foster a better understanding of Ju Zheng and his era in terms of legal history.
This thesis consists of five chapters: The first chapter introduces the scope of inquiry, the main themes of the study, the sources and the literature on this subject. Next chapter documents Ju Zheng's efforts in tackling the problems of Supreme Court inherited from his predecessors during his first three years in the key position of the judiciary. The third Chapter deals with the process of party control over the judiciary. In hindsight, this process went through two stages: first, it was a project to revolutionize the justices which ended up making most judges party members; the atmosphere of the next stage manifested in an article of Ju Zheng which called attentions to efficacious partisan indoctrinations and to ground nationalism as the guideline for the justices. This process of intermingling of the judiciary and the party did generate some positive results. For instance, it created a vigorous nation-wide movement to seek abolition of the unequal treaties with foreign powers, which later on undergirded the judicial pattern of deciding amnesty cases by Ju Zheng judiciary. Chapter four explores the legal nationalization movements initiated from the National Conference of Justices in the year of 1935, vividly epitomized in the following nation-wide discussions in 1930s and 1940s on how to create a new legal system embedded in China context. The discussions eventually converged to two distinct lines: the first line claimed that it was the long-lasting Chinese culture (zhong guo gu you) that was to become the starting-point for a new legal system; in contrast, the second line argued for "rebuilding" (chong xin jian li ) a new legal system for the modern China. The last chapter offers a few concluding remarks.
Adviser: Billy So Kee-long.
Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 70-06, Section: A, page: 2184.
Thesis (doctoral)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2008.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 180-190).
Electronic reproduction. Therefore, investigation and theoretical studies have been developed concerning philosophers, designers, artists and authors, approaching the single artistic and communication derived object as a massification object. The relationship between Creativity and Technology allows that each one reinforces its qualities, and values the produced objects, developing an investigation that combines alternative transversal technology; integrating in the communication object different components. The interdisciplinary characteristics of Design and Graphic Production shared with other sectors allow promoting cultural, social, historical, political and scientifical values, integrated in the works of communication and artistic production. The study providing used methodology and integrated projects of different designers and artists, observed in their relations with the different processes, such as Drawing, Design and Graphic and Artistic Production, engaging comparative technological involvements with diverse processes of Experimentation, consent to extend the knowledge developed in the objects created in this context. New approaches in the serigraphic production processes (re)design, projecting exhibitions and communication, throughout studies carried on with design students, transforming canvas into production and project making, in close collaboration with designers and plastic artists, from which we select, in a first instant, seven projects, is what exemplifies the essential importance of the current investigation, which brings together Creativity and Technology, five of which were published completed. The association and involvement between the presented project with Scientifical Institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations, in Portugal and abroad, provide a dimension that justifies the ultimate objective in the opening of experimental spaces, as well as the creation of new interest areas, which in time will allocate the exportation of the Graphic Production, Design, Communication and Multiple Production Arts results

Abstract:
This 2018 essay by art historian Kim A. Munson shares the details of her research on exhibits of original comic art in U.S. museums and galleries from 1930-1954. This chapter discusses several shows of the 1930’s from Thomas Nast at the Whitney (1932) to the display of the first Walt Disney animation cel purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1939). This chapter discusses World War II exhibits at the Metropolitan. This chapter discusses The Comic Strip: Its Ancient and Honorable Lineage and Present Significance, organized for the American Institute of Graphic Arts by Jessie Gillespie Willing (AIGA, 1942), which is a touring exhibit with historical works, comics, and comic books. Milton Caniff was a pioneer and advocate of comics exhibits representing himself (The Art of Terry and the Pirates 1939-1946) and later with the newly formed National Cartoonist Society organizing many shows including 20,000 Years of Comics (1949 Savings Bond Tour), and American Cartooning (Met Museum, 1951).

Abstract:
James Cochran Stevenson Runciman (SR) lived a long life, which may be brought to order by identifying four overlapping phases. In the first, SR, went up from Eton (where as a Colleger he transferred from Classics to History) to Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1921 at the age of eighteen, graduating (double first) in 1924, where he was fellow (1927–38, honorary fellow from 1965) and University lecturer (1932–8). His grandfather's death in 1938 allowed SR to choose to become an ‘independent scholar’, a second phase which never ended. But a third phase supervened from 1940–7, SR's more fruitful equivalent of Edward Gibbon's service with the Hampshire Militia in 1759–62. It was a period of independence and maturity away from home. The British Academy's election of SR to its fellowship in 1957 marks the beginning of a fourth phase. It came after the conclusion of SR's greatest uncommissioned work, A History of the Crusades, 3 vols. (Cambridge, 1951–4).

Abstract:
In The Log of the Sea of Cortez, that memorable treatise of science, adventure, and philosophy, John Steinbeck (1951) made bare mention of mammals. Of course, the main purpose of that effort was to chronicle a trip to the Gulf of California to collect invertebrates in the company of Steinbeck’s friend and scientist, Ed Ricketts. The party visited four islands—Tiburón, Coronados, San José, and Espíritu Santo. At anchor off Isla Tiburόn, Steinbeck reported a swarm of bats that approached their boat. One bat was collected but, to the best of our knowledge, it was never identified or preserved. Aside from some descriptions of taxa (e.g., Butt 1932), relatively little was known at the time about mammals from islands in the Sea of Cortés. There is now a reasonably rich history of systematic and biogeographic studies of mammals in and adjacent to the Sea of Cortés (for general reviews, see Orr 1960; Huey 1964; Lawlor 1983; and Hafner and Riddle 1997). Here we summarize much of that information and explore biogeographic patterns that emerge from it, add important recent records of bats, and evaluate new evidence about the origins of insular faunas and the ecological processes and human impacts that affect colonization and persistence of mammals on gulf islands. The terrestrial mammalian fauna of islands in the Sea of Cortés (including islands off the Pacific coast of Baja California) comprises 45 species, of which 18 currently are recognized as endemics (but see below), representing 5 orders, 9 families, and 14 genera (app. 12.1). Collectively they share relationships with mainland representatives on both sides of the gulf and are divisible into 28 clades of species or species groups (app. 12.2). Rodents are disproportionately represented, constituting a total of 35 species and 76 of 97 total insular occurrences, and they are the only nonvolant mammals to become established on distant oceanic islands. In addition, except for the few species of lagomorphs, which occur only on landbridge islands, a greater proportion of mainland species of rodents occurs on islands than is the case for other groups of mammals.

Milchunas, Daniel G., and William K. Lauenroth. "Effects of Grazing on Vegetation." In Ecology of the Shortgrass Steppe. Oxford University Press, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195135824.003.0020.

Abstract:
Grazing by large native ungulates and semiaridity are the two main forces that have had a large infuence in shaping the current-day structure of the shortgrass steppe ecosystem (Milchunas et al., 1988). With the uplift of the Rocky Mountain chain during the Miocene (approximately one million years ago), forests of the Great Plains were gradually replaced by grasslands (Axelrod, 1985). Large grazing and browsing animals inhabited the Great Plains during the middle to late Pleistocene, as did grasses of the genera Stipa, Agropyron, Oryzopsis, and Elymus (Axelrod, 1985; Stebbins, 1981). Bison occurred both east and west of the Rockies during the Wisconsin glacial period in the latter part of the Pleistocene (Wilson, 1978). During the early Holocene, approximately 10,000 years ago, bison and grasses of the genera Bouteloua, Buchloë, Andropogon or Schizachyrium, and Sorghastrum concomitantly increased throughout the Great Plains (Stebbins, 1981), but bison did not proliferate west of the continental divide (Mack and Thompson, 1982; Van Vuren, 1987). The natural shift in fauna from horses, pronghorn, and camels to bison and wild sheep from Eurasia is thought to have favored the spread of shortgrasses such as Bouteloua and Buchloë (Stebbins, 1981). Furthermore, grassland flora east and west of the Rocky Mountains probably had separate origins (Leopold and Denton, 1987). The shortgrass steppe is unique from other North American semiarid ecosystems in having bison play an important role. Bison did not proliferate west of the Rocky Mountains as they did on the Great Plains to the east. This is due in part to a lack of coincidence in timing of bison lactation and the phenological development of C3 grasses in the more Mediterranean–like climate west of the Rockies, in contrast to the mix of C3 and C4 grasses and pattern of spring–summer precipitation on the Great Plains (Mack and Thompson, 1982). Other explanations for the low numbers of bison west of the Rocky Mountains include physiographic barriers restricting immigration (Kingston, 1932), low p rotein content of forage (Daubenmire, 1985; Johnson, 1951), heavy snowfall as a cause of mortality (Daubenmire, 1985), and low aboveground primary production coupled with disjunct suitable habitat (Van Vuren, 1987). Bison a lso did not prosper in the southwestern United States, nor did a large herbivore fauna develop in South America (Stebbins, 1981).
