Abstract:
Knowledge of Portuguese Campodeidae is scant, with only 7 previous papers (Wygodzinsky 1944a; Condé 1951; Sendra 1990; Sendra & Moreno 2004, 2006; Gama et al. 2000a,b), with a total of 13 epigean species: Eutrichocampa Silvestri (1 sp.), Campodea Westwood (6 spp.) and Podocampa Silvestri (6 spp.). Three of these species are endemic to mainland Portugal: C. machadoi Condé, 1951, P. jorgei Wygodzinsky, 1944 and P. seabrai Wygodzinsky, 1944. Only one species, Podocampa cardini Silvestri, 1932, has been recorded from a Portuguese cave environment (Condé 1955); this species previously had been known as an epigean species from Sierra de Aralar in Navarra, Spain (Silvestri 1932). Intensive sampling efforts over the last four years in Portuguese karstic caves revealed the presence of a morphospecies originally assigned to Podocampa fragiloides Silvestri, 1932, which is often found in moist epigean environments of the Iberian Peninsula influenced by the Atlantic Ocean (A. Sendra, pers. obs.).

Abstract:
The meaning of contemporary Realism (1969).

Abstract:
The diagnosis of the genus Kunstidamaeus Miko, 2006 is given and a new generic concept within Damaeus sensu lato is proposed. Epidamaeus, Kunstidamaeus and Spatiodamaeus are given generic status, whereas Adamaeus, Paradamaeus and the nominal subgenus Damaeus s. stricto are considered to be subgenera of the genus Damaeus. The type species K. lengersdorfi (Willmann, 1932) including the immature stases is redescribed and its geographic distribution and ecology is discussed. The neotype of K. lengersdorfi is designated. Together with the type species, the genus Kunstidamaeus includes seven known European species: K. tenuipes (Michael, 1885), K. tecticola (Michael, 1888), K. nivalis (Kulczynski, 1902), K. nidicola (Willmann, 1936), K. diversipilis (Willmann, 1951), K. granulatus (Willmann, 1951), and K. longisetosus (Willmann, 1953).

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractOn the basis of lepidosis, dentition, and internal morphology, the specific status of the African endemic Dipsadoboa werneri (Boulenger, 1897) and Dipsadoboa shrevei (Loveridge, 1932) is established. Sternfeld's (1910) implicit synonymization of Dipsadomorphus reticulatus Werner, 1909, with Leptodira werneri Boulenger, 1897, is considered valid. Dipsadoboa shrevei kageleri (Uthmöller, 1939) n. comb. (Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia kageleri) is considered a valid taxon, but belonging to the genus Dipsadoboa in the sense of Laurent (1951) and Rasmussen (1979). On the basis of the emarginated optic fenestra and the relatively short anterior portion of the skull, the three taxa are considered a monophyletic subgroup within Dipsadoboa.

Abstract:
Abstract. The series of daily Ap-indices has been subdivided into pentades (1932–1936 etc.) and spectra with fine-frequency resolution have been calculated for the indices in each of these intervals. Daily sunspot numbers have been processed in the same way. The average spectrum from all spectra in the pentades, as well as the spectrum from the whole interval have been calculated, and significant peaks have been determined. There is a significant difference between the spectra in the pentades containing the solar activity minimum (1932–1936, 1942–1946 etc.) and those containing the solar activity maximum (1937–1941, 1947–1951 etc.). Most peaks can be interpreted as a response to solar rotation and to the structure of solar wind speed (two high-speed streams per solar rotation), both modulated by the 11-year, annual and semi-annual waves. No significant peak corresponding to the period of the synodic month, or its half has been found. This result suggests that the influence of lunar cycles on some natural phenomena (if any) is not mediated by geomagnetic activity.Key words. Abstract:

Abstract:
Negotiating the loan of a car by a friend and writing a novel may appear to be very different linguistic activities, but both may call on participants to construct a set of contextual parameters for interaction which re-rank existing social and cultural parameters. Drawing on and developing particular aspects of Werth's cognitive work on text worlds (1999) and Fludernik's account of the schemata we bring to bear in processing narratives (1996), this article considers how interpersonal parameters are constructed in reading and their relationship to generic schemata. It then examines how two novels, Flaubert's Madame Bovary (1951 [1857]) and Céline's Voyage au bout de la nuit (1980 [1932]), rework the parameters of the relationship between author and audience through moves which resemble patterns of negotiation described in pragmatic accounts of conversational interactions.

Abstract:
The aim of this article is to present Borges’ personal translation theory, particularly regarding literary translation. The Argentine author’s main ideas are introduced and contextualised through secondary literature, but especially through Borges’ own works in this regard ¾specifically the essays The Two Ways to Translate (1926), The Homeric Versions (1932), The Translators of the 1001 Nights (1936), The Enigma of Edward Fitzgerald (1951) and the «ficción» Pierre Menard, Author of Don Quixote (1939). Among those ideas, the value of translation as a paradigm for reading, writing, and text interpretation stands out. The article also deals with aspects that were pioneering in their time, even though nowadays they are taken for granted by some scholars. Those aspects include placing both the original and the translation on an equal plane, the importance of the descriptive approach and of the work over the author, the value of creativity, the impossibility of there being only one correct translation, the potential of mistranslations, the notion of gain through translation (instead of loss), (self)censorship and ideology, etc.

Abstract:
AbstractMany women in the United States encountered resistance to their involvement in orchestral conducting and public instrumental performance—both solo and ensemble—in the early twentieth century. Mary Davenport Engberg (1880–1951), however, became involved in the developing musical culture of the Pacific Northwest without encountering opposition based on her gender. In 1911 Engberg founded the mixed-gender Bellingham Symphony Orchestra, which she conducted until she became the conductor of the Seattle Civic Symphony Orchestra in 1921, and she also performed extensively as a violinist in Seattle and along the West Coast. She was the director of an influential music school in Seattle and cofounded the Seattle Civic Opera Association in 1932. Engberg's life and accomplishments reveal the effect of regional differences in the experiences and reception of women in American music. An understanding of her contributions leads to a better appreciation of the varied roles played by women in instrumental music throughout our country's history.

Abstract:
Abstract In the netherlands regional novels have never been considered as real literary works. in Flanders regional literature had a better status, especially because several writers of the Van Nu en Straks movement such as Stijn Streuvels wrote about regional themes. in Czech literature since 1848 regional themes was viewed as important in novels and stories, mainly till the end of world war ii. in 1932 the Catholic writer Antonín Matula defined the so-called ruralism, which became a movement of mainly Catholic writers from the countryside. Most of them were severely persecuted in a constructed Stalinist show trial against the green international in 1951. in his work Hlasy země v evropských literaturách (The Voice of Earth in European Literatures, 1933) Matula discussed nearly all major european literatures, i.e. Flemish regional writers. it is no coincidence that especially Flemish writers such as ernest Claes, Stijn Streuvels and Felix timmermans, were translated into Czech during the second quarter of the 20th century.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper explores the complexity of translation of borderland literature through a case study of the Japanese and Chinese translations of the Korean short story “The Red Hill.” Written by the renowned Korean writer Kim Tong-in (김동인, 1900–1951) in 1932, this story features the Korean agrarian community in the Northeast Asian borderland of Manchuria and is conventionally considered a masterpiece of Korean national literature. When it was translated into Japanese and Chinese and anthologized in inland Japan and the Japanese Manchukuo respectively, the three texts of the same story in three languages conveyed different and contradictory national/imperial claims over Manchuria, a Northeast Asian frontier. This case study demonstrates how the very act of translating and anthologizing, as a process of linguistic transposition across cultural and national constituencies, may crystallize the sense of territorial competition through revealing, reshuffling, and redefining the covert intricacy of national relations in the original text.

Abstract:
Evgeny V. Spektorsky (1875–1951) based his monograph, a survey of the history of social science ideas, on his teaching experience at the universities of Warsaw, Kiev, Prague, Belgrade and Ljubljana. The manuscript, finished by mid-1931, was accepted for publication by the Slovenska Matica publishing house on the recommendation of Anton Lajovic, lawyer and composer. Entitled The History of Social Philosophy, it was translated into Slovenian by Josip Vidmar and published in two volumes in 1932 and 1933. The print run was high: 5,000 copies of Volume I and 4,500 copies of Volume II. Spektorsky argued for a genetic analysis of the history of social science thought, which he saw as a treasury of ideas influencing human life. He emphasised the impact of ideas because these had, in his view, left a deeper impact on the history of mankind than scientific studies or proofs of eternal truths. Although critical of Marxism, whose pretensions to a scientific world view he saw as a mere propaganda move, Spektorsky never accepted dogmatic views.

Abstract:
The language situation in secondary education for boys in Limburg during the interbellum periodIn July 1932 the Flemish finally obtained a statutory regulation for the long pursued Dutchification of secondary education. Based on the language regime in secondary education for boys in Limburg during the interbellum period we investigated the context in which the language law came about, and whether it actually ended the Gallicisation of that level of education. Both the language regulations issued by bishop Rutten of Liege in 1919 for his colleagues in Limburg as well as those issued by the successive ministers for national education regarded bilingualism as the prevailing standard . The application of the regulations did not produce an unequivocal result. Factors such as the location of the school in reference to the linguistic border or a Gallicised city or industrial environment as well as the presence of Walloon pupils had a strong impact on the degree and the speed of the Dutchification. If the course of education of the humanities was not complete or if there was no competing school of the other educational system, then this had a positive impact on the position of the native language. On the other hand, the resistance by influential groups against the progress of Dutchification, a pro-French attitude by the school board and the deficiency in the knowledge of the Dutch language of individual teachers could hold back the improvement of the language regime.Although the language law of 1932 signified a landmark because it introduced unilingualism in Flanders, it did not immediately put an end to secondary education in French in Limburg. The existing French speaking departments could carry on as long as they complied with certain minimal requirements in reference to numbers of pupils. The French speaking department of the Royal Grammar School of Tongres was not shut down until 1951 and that of the Preparatory Seminary in Saint Trond not until 1961, almost 30 years after the introduction of the language law for secondary education.

Abstract:
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to discuss the understanding of modernization as a cumulative and complementary process of ideas. To this end, we introduce the notion of the actualization and differentiation of city planning norms and rules as a way of assuring the ordering of the city. We also discuss the maintenance of these rules at the present time and the paradox between the continuity of current urban knowledge founded in the theories of modernity and the abandonment of that knowledge in favour of alternative ways of promoting the ordering and control of the city. The way chosen was that of reconstructing the ideas set out in the urban plans drawn up in Recife in the 30s and 50s. In the thirties, urban planning principally introduced the ideas of Ciams, whose authors were Domingos Ferreira (1927), Nestor de Figueiredo (1932), Atílio Corrêa Lima (1936) and Ulhôa Cintra (1943). In the fifties, urban planning translated, among other things, the norms of the Economy and Humanism Movement that are presented in the study of Lebret (1954) and in the proposals of Baltar (1951). The paper compares these plans, explaining the different concepts and representations of Recife and its localities and discussing how this knowledge has survived the emergence of new concepts. Keywords: history; modernization; knowledge; city planning; representation.

Abstract:
Started on February 19, 1932, People’s Houses have an important place in the cultural leap, secularisation and modernization policies of the early Turkish Republic. Grounded on the reasons for being a tool for propaganda of the Republican People's Party (CHP) People Houses were abolished by the Democrat Party in 1951. One of these cultural institutions whose number were reached to 478 until the year 1951 in which they had closed, is Adapazarı People’s House which is opened in February 23, 1934.The Sakarya magazine is the Adapazarı People’s House magazine. Between March 1, 1943 and August 1943, 6 issues were published. The publications of the magazines are published in the regulations of the people's houses. Despite this, Adapazarı, the district, published Sakarya Magazine. The publication policy of Sakarya Magazine is to spread the principles of the CHP. Adapazari has named Sakarya as the magazine which also wants to be a province. The People’s Houses, which are came to be known as the institutions of culture and which is also a means of giving people the idea of being a nation and a citizen, began to publish journals in order to reveal their politics to the public. During the period of Atatürk , the journal of People’s House of Adapazarı which is called Sakarya, has been going on to be an important source for the history of Adapazarı. So, in the study, the first publishing of Sakarya, some problems during the publishing period, the subjects in the journal and closing of the journal have studied. Abstract:
Robert Bedford (1874–1951), based in the isolated community of Kyancutta in South Australia, was a unique contributor to world geology, specifically in the field of meteorites and fossil archaeocyatha. Born Robert Arthur Buddicom in Shropshire, UK, he was an Oxford graduate who worked as a scientist in Freiberg, Naples, Birmingham and Shrewsbury as well as with the Natural History Museum, Kensington and the Plymouth Museum in the United Kingdom. He was a Fellow of the Geological Society of London, 1899–1910. In 1915, Buddicom changed his surname to Bedford and relocated to South Australia. During the 1920s, Bedford expanded his geological interests with the establishment of a public museum in Kyancutta in 1929. This included material previously collected and stored in the United Kingdom before being sent to Australia. Bedford was very successful in collecting material from the distant Henbury meteorite craters in Australia's Northern Territory, during three separate trips in 1931–1933. He became an authority on meteorites with much Henbury material being sent to the British Museum in London. However, Bedford's work on, and collecting of, meteorites resulted in a serious rift with the South Australian scientific establishment. Bedford is best known amongst geologists for his five taxonomic papers on the superbly preserved lower Cambrian archaeocyath fossils from the Ajax Mine near Beltana in South Australia's Flinders Ranges with field work commencing in about 1932 and extending until World War II. This research, describing thirty new genera and ninety-nine new species, was published in the Memoirs of the Kyancutta Museum, a journal that Bedford personally established and financed in 1934. These papers are regularly referenced today in international research dealing with archaeocyaths.

Abstract:
This article examines the use of central elements of the Jewish religious repertoire and transcendental realm, such as prophecy or revelation, within the aesthetic secular realm of musical avant-garde and modern Hebrew literature. By focusing on two case studies, I attempt to shed new light on the question of Jewish secular culture. Arnold Schoenberg (1874–1951), an Austrian Jewish composer, was born into an assimilated Viennese family and converted to Protestantism before returning to Judaism in the 1930s while escaping to the United States. Aharon Appelfeld (1932–2018), an Israeli Jewish writer, was born in Czernowitz to assimilated German-speaking parents, survived the Holocaust and emigrated to Israel in 1946. My claim is that in their works both composer and author testify to traumatic experiences that avoid verbal representation by: (1) subverting and transgressing conventional aesthetic means and (2) alluding to sacred tropes and theological concepts. In exploring Schoenberg’s opera Moses und Aron and Appelfeld’s Journey into Winter among others, this article shows how the transcendent sphere returns within the musical and poetic avant-garde (musical prose, 12-tone composition, prose poem, non-semantic or semiotic fiction) as a “sound” of old traditions that can only be heard through the voices of a new Jewish culture.

Abstract:

Abstract:
I want you to have power because I will have power.Roscoe Conkling Simmons (1881–1951) was an African American journalist and lifelong Republican, frequently acclaimed as the greatest orator of his day. He wrote for the Chicago Defender, the nation's largest black paper, and was later a columnist for the Chicago Tribune. A sometime advisor on black affairs to Republican administrations during the 1920s, Simmons seconded the re-nomination of Herbert Hoover for president in 1932, where “His exit from the platform was blocked by senators, committeemen, governors and others high in the public life who sought to touch ‘the hem of his garment.’” Throughout his career, the Colonel, as Simmons was often called, forged close links with black organizations. On regular speaking tours, he participated in the affairs of fraternities, churches, and educational institutions nationwide. Simmons was a social chameleon, on familiar terms with black America's most powerful businessmen and editors, entertainers and mobsters, but equally comfortable among the working men and women with whom he gossiped in barber shops and at church picnics. Senators, mayors, and aldermen admired his talent on the speaking platform and valued his connections to the black community. When white Republicans needed help in rallying northern black voters, Simmons was the fixer they summoned. He gladly obliged, out of loyalty to the Grand Old Party and in anticipation of reciprocal dispensations.

Abstract:
Afrotropical species of the Craspedophorus leprieuri and Craspedophorus regalis groups are revised. C. clasispilus (Alluaud, 1915) and C. guineensis Basilewsky, 1987 are considered as subspecies of C. leprieuri (Laporte de Castelnau, 1835); the synonymized C. peringueyi Csiki, 1929 (=laticollis Péringuey, 1904) is restated as subspecies of C. leprieuri, and it is described C. leprieuri zambianus (DR Congo: Katanga Province; Zambia); C. pseudofestivus Burgeon, 1930 is considered subspecies of C. merus Péringuey, 1904, and it is described C. merus lundanus (Angola, DR Congo: Kasai-Oriental and Katanga Provinces); C. bouvieri imperialis Burgeon, 1930 is considered to be a separate species of C. bouvieri (Rousseau, 1905), and C. bouvieri dux Basilewsky, 1951 is transferred to C. imperialis. The synonymized C. sayersii (Hope, 1842) is considered to be a good subspecies of C. regalis. C. bouvieri crampeli (Alluaud, 1915) is removed from C. bouvieri, and transferred to C. reflexus (Fabricius, 1781) in the C. reflexus species group (Häckel 2016). In this group C. uelensis Burgeon, 1930 is considered to be a subspecies of C. reflexus; and C. bozasi Alluaud, 1930 is synonymized with C. reflexus uelensis Burgeon, 1930. C. arnosti Häckel 2016 is synonymized with C. reflexus crampeli (Alluaud, 1915), C. ethmoides Alluaud, 1930 is synonymized with C. impictus (Boheman, 1848), and C. lebaudyi Alluaud, 1932 is synonymized with C. stanleyi Alluaud, 1930.

Abstract:
During the ninth Italian Antarctic Expedition, a 22 m deep firn core was drilled on the Hercules Névé (ΗΝ) in the Transantarctic Mountains, northern Victoria Land, Antarctica, The continuous dust record from HN, spanning 70 years from 1927 to 1994, displays sharp differences between the upper 15.5 m and the bottom part. The background of dust concentration in the upper part is quite homogeneous, with values around 6.5 x 103 particles g −1 of water, and some peaks reaching maximum values of 1.0-1.5 x 104 particles g−1 of water. in this part the volume-size distribution of particles shows a relative maximum around 0.9 μm while a second maximum occurs for particles larger than 12 μm . The larger particles are likely to have a local origin, while the small-size component may be representative of long-range transport dust. Below 15.5 m the record shows higher values in both background and peak concentration, with mean values of 1.6 x 104 particles g−1. The volume-size distribution changes from 0.9 to 1.5μm in parallel with the increase of dust concentration. The dust record suggests significant increases in concentration for the periods 1932-42 and 1951-64. It suggests some correlations with precipitation anomalies over South America and indirectly supports the hypothesis that small-sized dust at HN may originate from South America.

Abstract:
In the context of the new order that was started with the republic, the reforms of the alphabet, the language, and culture were especially important. As it is well-known, the Turkish Alphabet was accepted on November 1, 1928 and was based on the Latin Language. Then, on November 24, 1928, it was decided that schools with the name of “Schools of the Nation” would be opened to spread literacy and the new alphabet. The “Schools of the Nation”, for whom the president and the head teacher was Atatürk, started education on January 1, 1929. Those who graduated from these schools, which had two steps, were given literacy certificate. “Schools of the Nation” made over one million people acquire literacy in Turkey within a short time period. However, the education was limited in these existing educational institutions, and new institutions were needed. The Community Centers, which were founded in 1932, undertook important missions to serve this purpose. The Community Centers were indispensable corporate institutions of the literacy campaign in early period of Turkish Republic, and achieved remarkable success with the literacy courses they opened in The Community Courses and Courses Branch. Document analysis was used as a model in research.Document analysis model, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used in order to evaluate the literacy courses and the results obtained in Bitlis and in the region. Because, according to the frequency of use as a data collection technique in qualitative research, observation and written documentation and documentation methods are used respectively. It was asked in the instructions sent to The Community Centers by the secretary general of the CHP that courses would be opened and every citizen who could not attend schools would be taught how to read in these areas. As it was the case all over the country, a literacy campaign was also started in Community Centerin Bitlis province, and these centers taught the locals how to read and write. Between 1932-1951, more than five thousand individuals learned to read and write in the Bitlis Community Center. Starting from this study made of the Early Republic Period community centers operating as formal education institutions in Turkey concluded that the impact on the literacy rate of the population.

Abstract:
AbstractA remarkably prescient debate broke out among Japanese legal scholars in the 1930s over the possibility of moving beyond international law as the dominant jurisprudence for a world that had already become quite integrated. At the very time when some were turning away from the ideal of world order to more parochial claims of national or regional autonomy, Tanaka Kōtarō (1890–1974) and Tsunetō Kyō (1888–1967), two of twentieth-century Japan's leading legal scholars, offered the jurisprudence of world law (sekai hō) as a substitute for what they believed was an outmoded concept of international law (kokusai hō). Tanaka sparked the debate with his prize-winning 1932 study A Theory of World Law, and Tsunetō joined it with his 1936 essay, “The Essence of World Law and its Social Function.” The debate has continued throughout the twentieth century in various forms. More broadly, the jurisprudence of world law introduced by Tanaka and Tsunetō underlies Jacques Maritain's influential Man and the State (1951) and – through Maritain – Pope Benedict XVI's recent call for a “true world political authority.” Below, I critically engage this theory of world law, focusing on the difference between Tanaka's transcendental approach and Tsunetō's social deterministic approach, and offer some reflections on how world law might provide a useful way to think beyond the customary binaries of nationalism/internationalism and society/nature that still encumber so much thinking about law and social order today.

Abstract:
Species introductions have altered host and parasite diversity throughout the world. In the case of introduced hosts, population age appears to be a good predictor of parasite richness. Habitat alteration is another variable that may impact host-parasite interactions by affecting the availability of intermediate hosts. The house sparrow (Passer domesticus (Linnaeus, 1758)) is a good model to test these predictions. It was introduced in several parts of the world and can be found across rural-urban gradients. A total of 160 house sparrows from Porto Alegre, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, were necropsied. Thirty house sparrows (19 %) were parasitized with at least one out of five helminth species (Digenea: Tamerlania inopina Freitas, 1951 and Eumegacetes sp.; Eucestoda: Choanotaenia passerina (Fuhrmann, 1907) Fuhrmann, 1932; Nematoda: Dispharynx nasuta (Rudolphi, 1819) Stiles & Hassall, 1920 and Cardiofilaria pavlovskyi Strom, 1937). Overall, there was no difference in prevalence and intensity of infection of any parasite species, parasite richness and community diversity between adult males and females and adults and juveniles. The number of infected sparrows among seasons, the richness of helminths and the abundance of species were also similar between rural and urban landscapes. Only the prevalence of C. passerina varied seasonally (p=0.0007). A decrease in the number of parasite species from the original range of P. domesticus (13) to its port of entrance in Brazil, the city of Rio de Janeiro (nine), to Porto Alegre (five) is compatible with the hypothesis that host population age is a good predictor of parasite richness.

Abstract:
Louis Seymour Bazett Leakey (1903-72) was a man of immense ability and variety. Apart from his numerous activities in the fields of paleontology, archeology, and anthropology, he achieved prominence as a naturalist, historian, political analyst, handwriting expert, and administrator. His writings not only reflect these interests but also serve as an important focal point for future research about East Africa.Especially valuable are Leakey's often overlooked contributions to newspapers such as The East African Standard (Nairobi), Kenya Weekly News (Nakuru), and The Times (London). In addition to expanding on the topics mentioned above these items, which included feature articles as well as letters to the editor, outlined Leakey's views on everything from the price of maize to the activities of Kenya's dalmation club.Because of his intimate knowledge of the Kikuyu people, Leakey rendered useful service to the British colonial government during the Mau Mau revolt. His experiences were reflected in his Mau Mau and the Kikuyu (1952), Defeating Mau Mau (1954), First Lessons in Kikuyu (1959), and Kenya: Contrasts and Problems (1966). Related articles in the Manchester Guardian (Manchester) and The Observer (London) also provided essential material for understanding Leakey's attitude towards the emergency. After Kenya gained its independence in 1963, Leakey continued to use newspapers as a forum for his political beliefs. In The East African Standard, for example, “Congratulations on Model Democracy” and “Controversial Report on Kenya Answered” defended the performance of the country's new government. His autobiography, By the Evidence: Memoirs, 1932-1951 also contained a great deal of information about Leakey's position toward Kenya's political and social evolution.

Abstract:

Abstract:
For more than six decades recurrent efforts have been made to establish the trends of early American prices. Following the lead of Arthur Harrison Cole and other members of the International Scientific Committee on Price History, who foresaw the need for worldwide evidence on prices as an essential foundation of economic and historical analysis, scholars began to develop series for major market centers such as Philadelphia, New York, Charleston, Boston, New Orleans, and Cincinnati (Warren et al. 1932; Taylor 1932a, 1932b; Bezanson et al. 1935, 1936; Cole 1938; Berry 1943; Bezanson et al. 1951). Modern refinements of these largely wholesale and urban price indexes for the years before the Civil War have yielded reliable long-term insights against which to interpret basic issues of American economic growth (U.S. Congress 1959–60; David and Solar 1977). Meanwhile, researchers focusing on the evolution of particular parts of the country or on the economic milieus of specific organizations have felt the need to determine local price movements for the historical contexts that interest them. To do so, they have used evidence from the accounts of merchants and farmers (Rothenberg 1979; Adams 1986, 1992), from probate inventories (Anderson 1975; Main 1985), and from the records of public institutions as diverse as the Philadelphia almshouse and Harvard College (Smith 1990; Foster 1962). John J. McCusker (1991, forthcoming) has contributed an overview of the key elements of this literature and has constructed from selected series a deflator that can be used to compare American economic values over time between 1700 and now.
