Abstract:
The erigonine linyphiid genus Disembolus currently contains 24 described species (World Spider Catalog 2018). Disembolus was erected by Chamberlin and Ivie (1933) to accommodate their new species D. stridulans Chamberlin and Ivie from Utah. Since then, 23 species have been added to the genus. Chamberlin (1949) described D. zygethus Chamberlin, but the majority of species were added to the genus by Millidge (1981). Millidge (1981) described 16 species from museum specimens at the American Museum of Natural History and transferred five species from the genera Tapinocyba and Soudinus (D. alpha (Chamberlin 1949), D. kesimbus (Chamberlin 1949), D. phanus (Chamberlin 1949), D. sacerdotalis (Crosby & Bishop 1933), and D. corneliae (Chamberlin & Ivie 1944)). The last species added to the genus was D. bairdi Edwards described by Edwards in 1999. Disembolus corneliae Chamberlin and Ivie was described from the female only by Chamberlin and Ivie (1944) as Soudinus corneliae. The species was then transferred to Disembolus by Millidge (1981). Herein, I describe the male of the species for the first time.

Abstract:

Abstract:
German history of the twentieth century offers a rich resource of precedent for property restitution and compensation programs. The Federal Republic of Germany instituted different mass claims proceedings shaped to “reverse” or mitigate violations of property rights that took place as part of (a) the persecutions by the Nazi regime from 1933 to 1945, (b) the Land Reform (Bodenreform) during the Soviet occupation of East German territories from 1945 to 1949, and (c) the nationalization activities of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from 1949 to 1990. Except for cases under the Land Reform in the Soviet zone, restitution preceded compensation as the main means of redress. All reparation schemes involved specific compensation arrangements including elaborate property evaluation systems.

Abstract:
The generic name Geranoaetus Kaup, 1844 (type species: Falco aguia Temminck = Spizaetus melanoleucus Vieillot) generally has been applied only to its type species, G. melanoleucus, although inclusion of fossil species in the genus has been suggested (Wetmore 1933; Amadon 1963). Although Geranoaetus is still recognized by some authors (e.g., Thiollay 1994; Remsen et al. 2010), others consider it a junior synonym of the genus Buteo Lacépedè, 1799, because of similarities to some species in that genus (e.g., Wetmore 1933; Hellmayr & Conover 1949; Clark 2006). Recent studies of the molecular phylogenetics of buteonine hawks (Riesing et al. 2003; Lerner et al. 2008; Amaral et al. 2006, 2009) unanimously agree on the lack of monophyly of three buteonine genera, namely Buteo, Leucopternis Kaup, 1847 and Buteogallus Lesson, 1830, as currently recognized (Remsen et al. 2010).

Fellgett, Lydia. "The writing of Betty Miller, 1933-1949." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2014. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/59219/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is the first comprehensive study of the writing of the author, journalist, reviewer and scholar Betty Miller (1910-65). As such it seeks to develop a language with which readers might think about her work. Analysing the ways in which commentators have redrawn the critical maps of the 1930s and 40s provides a crucial context for an understanding of Miller’s work as a product of its cultural inception. Exploring the dynamics of the various socio-historic and institutional forces that have come to bear on the availability and readability of women’s writing from this period, The Writing of Betty Miller looks at the recuperative practices of feminist publishing houses as well as the near annihilation of Miller’s work in the Second World War. Betty Miller’s bestselling biography of Robert Browning and her non-fiction writing for journals such as Twentieth Century and Horizon in the 1950s, begin to suggest a literary context that draws out the allusions in and influences on her fiction. The seven novels that she wrote between 1933-49, read chronologically, situate her amongst contemporaneous debates on the gendered dynamics of marriage, the politics of the Anglo-Jewish experience and the familial impact of war. They also confront literary experiments of writing timeliness, boredom and violence. Close reading interrogates her texts’ most prevalent imagery and aesthetics, asking what makes her writing particularly Millerian, whilst positioning a readership that pays attention to the thoughtful examination of the morality of everyday decision-making that underlies Miller’s work.

Petit, Elise. "Velléités et utopies de rupture. Les politiques musicales en Allemagne, de 1933 à 1949." Thesis, Paris Est, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PEST0025.

Full text
Abstract:
This historical and musicological study focuses on the politics of Music in Germany, from 1933to 1949. It explores the inherent relationship between music and politics, under diversified andantagonistic regimes. It starts with the Hitler years and the study of Nazism. Professing anational-socialist “revolution”, mainly by the rejection and stigmatization of the WeimarRepublic artistic accomplishments, Hitler defines the music and the new “Aryan” Man he wantsto create primarily by professing an ideology of blood “purity”. This is the concept we startfrom: the ideology of “purity” has many musical consequences throughout the century, leadingto the idea of “purification” or even musical “purge” during and after the Hitler years. We alsotake interest in the links between music and “the people”: the political and geographical contextsleading to a definition as a “racial community” or as an “occupied population” underline thecomplexity of the relationships with the political power and with music itself. Last but not least,we question the concept of “rupture” that defines each regime and its mostly utopian ambition torenew the musical creation, to fit its new political agenda

Abstract:

Abstract:
The paper presents the work of the Norwegian engineer Ægidius Elling (ref. Figure 1), from his gas turbine patent in 1884 to the first gas turbine in the world producing net power in 1903. It traces the subsequent patents, until his final experiments in 1932. Focus is placed on an engineer with a clear vision of the potential of the gas turbine engine and the capability to realize his ideas, in spite of the lack of industrial financial support. In 1903, Elling noted in his diary that he thought he had built and operated the first gas turbine that could give net power delivery. The power delivery of this very first gas turbine was extracted as compressed air. The net power delivery was modest, only the equivalent of 11 hp. The reason for producing air was the accelerating use of pneumatic tools. Refinements to the gas turbine design soon followed, such as water injection for compressor cooling and recuperation of exhaust gas heat. In 1904, the power output of Elling’s gas turbine had increased to 44 hp. Elling also abandoned the production of compressed air in favor of electric power generation. In a patent from 1923, Elling described a multi-shaft engine with intercooling and reheat, with an independent power turbine. He improved this gas turbine in the period up to 1932, when the engine reached a power output of approximately 75 hp. In 1933, Elling wrote prophetically, “When I started to work on the gas turbine in 1882 it was for the sake of aeronautics and I firmly believe that aeronautics is still waiting for the gas turbine.” Unfortunately, Elling was never to take part in this development, although he pursued his work on the gas turbine until his death in 1949.
