Como a freqüência desta doença era maior nos negros do que nos brancos, a anemia falciforme era qualificada geralmente como uma doença racial.

Full textThis historical and musicological study focuses on the politics of Music in Germany, from 1933to 1949. It explores the inherent relationship between music and politics, under diversified andantagonistic regimes. It starts with the Hitler years and the study of Nazism. Professing anational-socialist “revolution”, mainly by the rejection and stigmatization of the WeimarRepublic artistic accomplishments, Hitler defines the music and the new “Aryan” Man he wantsto create primarily by professing an ideology of blood “purity”. This is the concept we startfrom: the ideology of “purity” has many musical consequences throughout the century, leadingto the idea of “purification” or even musical “purge” during and after the Hitler years. We alsotake interest in the links between music and “the people”: the political and geographical contextsleading to a definition as a “racial community” or as an “occupied population” underline thecomplexity of the relationships with the political power and with music itself. Last but not least,we question the concept of “rupture” that defines each regime and its mostly utopian ambition torenew the musical creation, to fit its new political agenda

Full textWhat did it mean to be a left-wing jurist under the Weimar Republic ? This study attempts to answer this question through the example of Gustav Radbruch (1878-1949), renowned legal philosopher, but also Social-Democratic activist, supporter of the Republic and for some time Member of Parliament and Justice Minister. Even though he is not the most well-known Weimar jurist, Radbruch participated in all the important legal debates of his time – such as the crisis of positivism and values, the legitimation of democracy and the questioning of the liberal, individualistic conception of the law, debates which reflected the most significant issues of that time of crisis, the Weimar Republic. Did he succeed in offering an alternative to the dominant discourse by elaborating solutions to the legal crisis within the frame of the Republic – rather than outside it ? Could a Social-Democratic jurist really reconcile theory and practice in that context ? It is necessary to analyze the way in which Radbruch responded to these challenges and to confront his discourse to that of other Socialist jurists in order to finally be able to give substance to the notion of a left-wing jurist under Weimar

Full textBetween the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century, many theater’s men call the audience they want to reunite as peuple and their theater as théâtre populaire. Their major interest is the research of a space capable to transmit the equality of the democratic society. In order to offer to everyone a good view of the stage, they choose the Bayreuth’s Festspielhaus as a reference model: the entire public is in front of the stage in the middle of darkness. Who’s the peuple that you place in that kind of space where spectators can’t almost have no exchange and where everyone is fascinated by the stage? In order to answer this question, the thesis proposes to study the dessin (room and scenography’s project) of a popular spectacle to better understand the dessein (acceptation of the word « populaire »). Thanks’ to a typological grid that analyzes the stage, the room and the scenography, the study will bring us to the Firmin Gémier’s experiences (1903-1919) and Jacques Copeau’s work for Savonarola (1935). These examples show the frontal model’s crystallisation for a reception of the image-screen proposed by the new figure of the metteur en scène. The grid is the used with Jean Vilar’s work, La Tragédie du Roi Richard II (1947); a spectacle that doesn’t uses neither the frontal model nor the illusionist image. Becoming the régisseur of « ilimitated stage » and of a polysomic image given to the spectator, Vilar allows to pass from a passive reception to an artistic invention. The acceptation given to the word peuple read in the scenography: if we change the dessin, the dessein also changes, or vice versa

Full textThe german intellectuals who emigrated after 1933 have published many texts in which they comment upon the attitude of those intellectuals who stayed in germany. In these texts, they try at first to impse the gesture of breaking off with them as a norm, as the gesture one has to make in order to belong to the community of the emigres. They turn to a more psitive vision as they try to build a volksfront, in which the intellectuals in germany are supposed to play a role too. It is under the influence of the communists , who in their strategy of unificating the antifascists plead for a reconciliation, that the emigres use less the excluding text model. Some emigres, like heinrich mann and thomas mann, who have never uttered any univocal exclusion, serve as models. The reintegration of the intellectuals who stayed in germany in the community of the "real" intellectuals and of the opponents of nazism takes place in the context of the discussion about the "other germany"; at this point they are considered no more as "renegades" but as members of the "inner emigration", which allows the emigres to refutate the thesis of an identity between hitler and germany. These texts show that the emigration has her own discurse, which is internal and strongly ideological ; they also show the limits of the politisation of the noncommunist emigres, whose discurse keeps within the cultural field. The excluding and normative character of these texts show the influence of the nazi discurse, as the emigres, on judging upon the intellectuals in germany, use the same categories as the nazis, but invert them. Full text"Xinyue magazine", 1928-1933 (Crescent Moon Review) was published by XU Zhimo, WEN Yiduo, HU Shi, LUO Longji and LIANG Shiqiu. The present study aims to determinate the place occupied by "Xinyue" in the intellectual and literary history of modern China. Following our objective, we have divided our study in two parts. The first one is factual and historical and it treats of the following points : 1) the contents of "Xinyue" and its evolution ; 2) the personality of the contributors of "Xinyue" and their relationships to the intellectual and literary world of the time ; 3) the history of the intellectuals who contributed to the magazine in respect to their own history. The second part is a presentation of the contribution of "Xinyue" to modern Chinese literature, specifically in poetry, theatre and fiction. Furthermore, two indexes have been compiled. In the first, articles are classified by author's name. In the other, thematic subjects of discourse and the subject are classified according to genre (such as essays, poems, fiction,. . . ). New ways of making politics are emerging in the so-called cyberspace, a communication space mediated by the world s computer network, located at some point of this achievement of human knowledge called Internet. Politics and power relations, especially those mediated, analyzed and criticized through the use of tools that are available in the Internet, undergo transformations in this process. If we add to this discussion the changes experienced by journalism, journalism professionals and what we understand by means of communication or media, we will have new materials for an analytical and critical enterprise in the fields of Social Sciences, Political Science and Communication. This study analyzes the profile of 4 journalists who use tools of the new information and communication technologies (blogs) for the production of information, criticism against the traditional media, interaction and fostering of the political debate with Internet users, and their contribution to the construction of a new democratic and public space. The professional history of the journalists-bloggers was analyzed, and also the structure and dynamics of their blogs. Through the analysis of interviews, the researcher attempted to capture these professionals thought concerning the media, politics and new information and communication technologies. The research s contribution, in methodological terms, is in the construction of the dialog between researcher and objects of study, aiming to characterize and identify, in its manifestations, a new type of journalism and journalists, political and media players, their role and place in the relations between communication and power in the networked society
Novas formas de fazer política estão surgindo no chamado ciberespaço, espaço de comunicação mediado pela rede mundial de computadores, localizado em algum ponto dessa realização do conhecimento humano chamada Internet. A política e as relações de poder, em especial aquelas mediadas, analisadas e criticadas utilizando-se ferramentas disponíveis na Internet se transformam nesse processo. Se acrescentarmos a essa discussão as mudanças porque passam o jornalismo, os profissionais do jornalismo e o que entendemos por meios de comunicação ou mídia, teremos novos materiais para uma empreitada analítica e crítica nos campos das Ciências Sociais, Ciência Política e Comunicação. Esta pesquisa analisa o perfil de 4 jornalistas que utilizam ferramentas das novas tecnologias de informação e comunicação (blogs) para a produção de informação, crítica à mídia tradicional, interação e fomento ao debate político com internautas, e sua contribuição para a construção de um novo espaço público democrático. Foram analisadas a trajetória profissional dos jornalistas-blogueiros, a estrutura e a dinâmica de seus blogs e, através da análise de entrevistas, procurou-se capturar o pensamento desses profissionais sobre mídia, política e novas tecnologias de informação e comunicação. Full textThis study begins with the actor’s quest for truth. Starting from the « actor’s paradox » which shines light on the tension that plays between Form and Spontaneity, and the difficulty of being simultaneously artist and work of art. A comparative research of Occidental/Oriental theatre, and other sources such as the thoughts of George Gurdjieff and François Delsarte led us to consider the work of the actor from the point of Trinitarian view, taking into account the three essential elements that are his body, his emotion and his mind. The quest for the truth that drives the actor has to begin with the comprehension of his own nature of this human trinity; before the understanding of its fragmentation, that is, the lack of harmony that can exist between these three principle functions and the danger of falling into automatic and stereotypic behaviors and reactions. This study allows us to observe the thought of certain great theatre reformers of the 20th century. Therefore, methods of Jerzy Grotowski and Etienne Decroux are analyzed using approaches of organicity and artificiality from the perspective of Grotowski. Our objective is to find a possible complementarity between the works of these two researchers in the quest for balance of the trinity body/emotion/intellect. Finally, the actor must simultaneously cultivate the three centers in order to unify the creator, the artisan and the matter of his work, and find his true presence on stage

Durante o Estado Novo a arquitectura, as artes visuais e performativas, o folclore, a literatura e a cultura em geral, foram usados como instrumentos para expressar os valores que formavam o regime. Tal ocorreu de forma mais incisiva durante as duas primeiras décadas do regime, quando um programa cultural – a Política do Espírito – foi implementado pelo director do Secretariado da Propaganda Nacional, António Ferro, escritor e jornalista associado à primeira geração modernista portuguesa. Não sendo o estudo do uso das artes como instrumento de propaganda novidade na história da arte, o papel do design de interiores – percebido como uma arte menor, subordinada ao que sucede nas ‘artes maiores’ – costuma ser ignorado. Acontece que em Portugal, num regime centrado na trilogia “Deus, Pátria e Família”, a decoração do lar não podia ser descurada como possível veículo ideológico, pelo que se justifica que seja objecto central de investigação. Este estudo aborda como o regime do Estado Novo, através do seu órgão oficial de difusão de propaganda e cultura, doutrinou a população sobre um conjunto de valores estéticos baseados na redescoberta das artes populares e como – rejeitando assim o design moderno, as influências estrangeiras e até os habituais estilos nacionais históricos, imagem de passados decadentes – participou no desenvolvimento de um ‘novo’ estilo nacional que se apropriava de formas tradicionais do mobiliário e da decoração. Através da observação e análise de fontes primárias estudou-se como esta acção se realizou com o recurso a uma série de diferentes processos e meios desde a apresentação das fontes estéticas nacionais, as artes populares, a exemplos de interiores de casas que seguiam os padrões apropriados exibidos em exposições e na imprensa. Analisa-se igualmente como o próprio regime desenvolveu e promoveu um conjunto de interiores não privados – uma série de pequenas pousadas estatais – que, ao serem concebidas como ‘casas de família’, vieram a servir de modelo de inspiração e gosto, não só à iniciativa hoteleira nacional, como ao cidadão comum, alcançando-se assim o objectivo original: a construção de uma identidade nacional verdadeiramente consentânea com os valores políticos. O entendimento dos métodos empregados pelos diferentes actores – regime e criadores – para a prossecução deste intento, torna-se essencial para perceber como esta acção pode, hoje, ser lida como um processo de design, num país onde a disciplina começava apenas a definir-se.
During Estado Novo, architecture, visual and performing arts, folklore, literature and culture in general, were used as instruments to express the values that moulded the regime. This occurred more intensely during the first two decades of the regime, when a cultural policy – A Política do Espírito [the Policy of the Spirit] – was implemented by the director of the National Propaganda Bureau, António Ferro, writer and journalist related to the first Portuguese modernist generation. While the use of the arts as propaganda is not new in art history studies, the role of interior design - perceived as a minor art, subordinated to what happens in the ‘major arts’ - is often ignored. It so happens that in Portugal, in a regime centred on the “God, Fatherland and Family” trilogy, the decoration of the home could not be neglected as a possible vehicle of ideology, so it is justified that it is a central object of investigation. This study addresses how the Estado Novo regime, through its official propaganda and culture dissemination organ, indoctrinated the population on a set of aesthetic values established on the rediscovery of popular arts and how – thus rejecting modern design, foreign influences and even the usual national historical styles, image of a decadent past – participated in the development of a ‘new’ national style that appropriated traditional forms of furniture and decoration. Through the review and analysis of primary sources, it was studied how this action was carried out using a series of different processes and mediums, from the presentation of the national aesthetic sources, the folk arts, to examples of home interiors that followed the appropriate standards, all displayed in exhibitions and press. It was also analysed how the regime itself developed and promoted a set of non-private interiors – a series of small state inns, the pousadas – which, being conceived as ‘family homes’, came to serve as a model of inspiration and taste, not only to the national tourism initiative, as well as to ordinary citizens, thus achieving the original objective: the construction of a national identity truly in line with the political values. Understanding the methods used by the different actors – regime and creators – for the pursuit of this intent, becomes essential to comprehend how this action can, today, be perceived as a design process, occurring in a country where the discipline was beginning to define itself.
