Ortega, Orozco Adriana.

Abstract:
Located in the intersection of the fields of History of Exhibitions and History of International Cultural Relations, this thesis studies the construction of a particular image of the Mexican nation abroad through the medium of art, and the ways in which this image was perceived by diverse audiences in different countries. The thesis analyzes the circulation, mediation and reception of Mexican art in a transnational context for the first major traveling exhibition of Mexican art in Europe.Between 1952 and 1953, the exhibition Art mexicain du précolombien à nos jours (Mexican art from pre-Columbian times to the present day) was successively presented in Paris, Stockholm, London and Mexico City. This cultural event draws upon a long prehistory that dates back to the 1920s. After several failed attempts, the idea of presenting an exhibition of Mexican art in Europe reemerges in the postwar period driven by the Mexican government and a constellation of European state and non-state actors, leading up to the opening of the exhibition in Paris on May 20, 1952.The thesis studies the stakes that various promoters had in the exhibition as well as the ways in which its curatorial discourse crystallized a nationalist rhetoric that stresses the continuity of the mexican artistic genius through the ages. It further investigates the different receptions and interactions within the Euro-American space by analyzing the various representations of Mexico articulated by the European publics; conversely, it examines the ways in which Mexican society resignifies the European reactions vis-à-vis Mexican art and adapts them to the local context. Moreover, this work scrutinizes the approvals and rejections expressed by the Mexican public with regard to the particular image of lo mexicano promoted by the state. The thesis demonstrates how this exhibition became a model for the display of Mexican art abroad, reappearing several times in various declensions over the following decades as a trademark of Mexican cultural diplomacy

Abstract:
This study in the manner of an essay reflects a constant but unstable interchange between Fiction, History and Personal Experience. It is based on the following novels: Os Malavoglia (Giovanni Verga), Pai patrão (Gavino Ledda), Vita e Stória de Nanetto Pipetta (Aquiles Bernardi), O quatrilho, A cocanha and A babilônia (José Clemente Pozenato), Juliano Pavolini and A suavidade do vento (Cristovão Tezza), Mamma, son tanto felice, O mundo inimigo and Vista parcial da noite (Luiz Ruffato). Two epistemological paths have a point of departure and a point of arrival: a) from Italy to Brazil / America; b) from small backcountry communities to the big city. Among the descendants of italian immigrants the simulations and illusions processed by fiction are closer to reality than those offered by institutions and associations in their argueing and tricking for "retrieval of the roots" and "reclaiming traditions", embodied by events like italian evenings, typical dinners, family encounters, and radio programs. In the novels, there is an absolute absence of such "events", no glasses are raised in honor of anything, no requiem and inhumation masses are held. Post-modern countryside people of Italian descent in Brazil have become globalized without even leaving home.

Abstract:
African, Caribbean, and English societies, in spite of the fact that they share common features, remain different in their profile on the grounds of the particularities of the physical spaces that witness their expressions and the specific goals they target within historical, cultural, political and economic data that form out their social stratification. In this way, it becomes important, as a main idea of this work, to put on surface the intrinsic link between space and discourse. A semiotic analysis of literary space in Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s, George Lamming’s and William Boyd’s works has led to a concluding argument which highlights social and political realities. Read through a semiotic stand, the nomenclature of these events and realities root their meaning in communicating scenarios which portray pragmatic aspects. Levels of language and nature of messages help to observe some logic of positions and transformations that imply continuity and discontinuity dimensions. What affects to the literary message an anthropological account narrated into a framework of interactions that articulate a totalizing significance

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the study of four contemporary Chilean composers from the second half of the 20th century and beginning of 21st century who developed their careers in the ‘euro-latin-american’ space (Cirilo Vila, Sergio Ortega, Patricio Wang, and Andrés González), and whose generational intersections allow to cover half a century of music. The first part of the thesis presents a brief panorama of Chilean concert music, from the independence of the country at the beginning of the 19th century until our days. The survey emphasizes the process of institutionalization of the musical life, as well as the implicit or explicit discurses, which are presented regarding the national cultural identity in relation to music. The second part analyzes in detail, through a biographical approach, the transnational trajectories of the four composers under study. The aim is to understand, among other aspects, how the processes of cultural change work at the level of a given artistic life. The third part, attempts to elucidate 1. the specificity of Chilean musicians through a multifactorial approach, presenting a series of studies towards analyzing the role of cultural transmitter performed by Chilean composers (within their double function as pedagogues and translators of exogenous languages); 2. the impact of the international circulation and the globalization on their works; 3. the links between music and politics as well as the links between high and popular art; 4. the role of France and Europe in the processes of acculturation; 5. the results of cultural hybridization (through concrete cases), and finally, 6. a typology of the ways of sonic appropriation

Abstract:
When everything becomes aesthetic the concept of art itself becomes in danger of disappearing. The increasing focus on image, at the expense of plastic-formal exercises, of varying complexity, has led to an impoverished understanding of the built environment, transforming the space into a social fetishized abstraction. Thus, we focused primarily on the sculptural and architectural productions, from mid XXth century, in order to understand how the technological advances that took place during and after the period of the 2nd World War, had a decisive influence on the conceptual processes of idealization of sculpture and architecture since then, allowing an approximation of the two areas. The Minimalist movement, became a refernce to the contemporary art for its ability to deny the European Cartesian art throug fenomenology, besides it contested the Modernist limits of the arts and defended a new interdisciplinary way of understanding it. In this indefinite field, enabling the plurality of languages and the confrontation of protagonisms, the emergence of a "minimal" aesthetic quickly assumed a sense of discipline based in a restraint visual economy. A sort of stabilization canon that reflected a sculptural and architectural practice reduced to the minimum of its plastic expression.

Abstract:
Abstract Kleene (1938, 1952) and Bochvar (1938) are the founders of the original three-valued constructions motivated epistemologically by the indeterminacy or absurdity of some propositions at a certain stage of scientific investigation. The assumed status of the third logical value is somewhat different from the classical values of truth and falsity. The resulting logics, both propositional and predicate, are simulaneously allied to and distant from the classical logic. In what follows the fundamentals of these epistemologically established systems of logic are discussed. Further, we give an overall exposition of two related constructions motivated by partiality in associating (classical) truth-values to sentences: supervaluations and the partial logic.

Abstract:
The dominance of the majors during the Finnish studio era was never total. Despite the difficulties in working outside the big companies, some of the minors and independents achieved a remarkable output, and some of the established classics like The Stolen Death (1938) and The White Reindeer (1952), discussed in this chapter, were produced independently. This chapter charts the challenges – lack of money and facilities – as well as the benefits – creative freedom – of working on the outskirts of studio production. The relation between major, minor, independent and amateur film production is also discussed.

Abstract:
Teatro de Ulises and Teatro Orientación were companies founded in Mexico City in the early twentieth century by members of the modernist/avant-garde literary group Contemporáneos. Celestino Gorostiza (1904–1967), Xavier Villaurrutia (1903–1950), Salvador Novo (1904–1974), and Gilberto Owen (1904–1952) founded the Teatro de Ulises in 1927. The company dissolved in 1928, but in 1932 Gorostiza went on to found the Teatro Orientación, which had two runs (1932–4 and 1938–9). Both companies aimed to bring translations of international modernist and avant-garde plays to the Mexican stage, a goal that earned them criticism from nationalist contemporaries.

Abstract The exposure of Alger Hiss as a Communist and a Soviet agent began with a story about Hiss told by his accuser Whittaker Chambers. In 1952 Chambers produced a long, polished version of that story in his memoirs, Witness. He was at that time a celebrity, the star prosecution witness at the 1949 and 1950 perjury trials of Hiss, whom Chambers had accused of being in a Communist cell with him, and passing him stolen government documents, in the 1930s. Chambers admitted to having been a member of the Communist Party of the United States and an under-cover Soviet agent, but stated that he had broken with the Soviets in 1938 and become a rabid anti-Communist.

Abstract:
Over a decade before the French-American sculptor Louise Bourgeois underwent psychoanalysis in New York (1952–1985), her work mined territories of psyche, body, home, and exile. Bourgeois’s papers from 1940 onward reveal that she shared Freud’s description of neurotics, hysterics, and artists as suffering from reminiscences. Scottish psychoanalyst W. R. D. Fairbairn identified the last of these in 1943 as “war neuroses,” just six years before Bourgeois debuted her first mature sculptures. These abstract “personages” served as melancholy surrogates for lost objects, the friends and family Bourgeois left in 1938 in Occupied France. In the 1960s, she further reduced the body to ambivalent amalgams of part-objects made from plaster and latex, suggesting swollen nodes, skin, and sex organs. Of particular interest are two papers published by Fairbairn in 1938 that extend the inner world of the individual to the field of object relations via the transposition of the symbolically “restored object.” Fairbairn conceived the radical notion of restitution, the mental process of repairing damage in the artist’s inner object world. These principles resonate with Bourgeois’s métier and a postwar sculptural aesthetic that probed the phenomenal experience of anxiety, exile, and psychoanalysis on the Self and others.

Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter we consider a few EoS’s based on finite strain. The classical theory of infinitesimal elasticity is based on two assumptions: 1) the strains are uniquely determined by the stresses and are reversible, and 2) the strains are limited to ‘linear’ elasticity; that is, they are so small that squares and products are negligible. In finite strain, the first assumption is retained, but the restriction to small strains is removed (Murnaghan, 1937). In generalized elasticity theory, finite strain representations go back to Love (1927), but practical expressions for finite strain were developed by Birch (1938, 1952). He used Murnaghan’s basic theory but restricted it to the case where the initial stress is a large hydrostatic pressure. The crucial assumption in finite strain theory is in the formal relationship between compression and coordinate displacement (see Stacey et al., 1981).

Abstract:

The historic Olympic stadium in Helsinki of 1938, venue of the Olympic Games in 1952, is elaborately modernized at present. The individual impression as a historic building, particularly the distinctive facade, is preserved in detail. Observing the severe restrictions of monumental protection, the now 80 years old building is complemented, among other things, by the construction of a warm-up running racetrack hall and a mall with shops as well as new stand roofs for both stands. In this context, MAURER develops special structural uplift bearings for the new roof construction. The distinctive feature is transferring primarily occurring tensile loads (secondary alternating pressure loads) kinematically precise to the substructure while balancing relative movements and relative torsion. The architecture requires smallest structures that meet highest safety requirements.
