Abstract:
The genera of Salyavatinae are briefly discussed. Nudiscutella frontispina Murugan & Livingstone, 1990 is considered a junior synonym of Paralisarda malabarica Miller, 1957 syn. nov. Thirteen species are transferred from Petalocheirus Palisot de Beauvois, 1805 and the following new combinations are proposed: Alvilla gulosa (Miller, 1940) comb. nov.; Alvilla obesa (Miller, 1940) comb. nov.; Alvilla spinosissima (Distant, 1903) comb. nov.; Alvilla tyrannus (Miller, 1940) comb. nov.; Platychiria congolensis (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; Platychiria lapidaria (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; Platychiria montana (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; Platychiria praecox (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; Platychiria similis (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; Platychiria striata (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; Platychiria ugandensis (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; Platychiria unicolor (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; and Rhachicephala fasciata (Distant, 1903) comb. nov.. Petalocheirus singularis Walker, 1873 is resurrected from synonymy under Petalocheirus malayus Stål, 1859 and transferred to Rhachicephala Truong, Zhao & Cai, 2007, resulting in Rhachicephala singularis (Walker, 1873) stat. rev. et comb. nov. A supplementary description of the female of Valentia langkawiensis Miller, 1940 is included. An updated key to the world genera of Salyavatinae concludes the study.

Abstract:
This thesis argues that a preoccupation with space is a characteristic feature of English fiction in the years following the outbreak of the Second World War and, more specifically, that the war's events caused this heightened interest in the spatial. Writing from the 1940s exhibits an anxious perplexity in its spatial descriptions which reveals an underlying philosophical uncertainty; cultural assumptions about spatial categories were destabilised by the war and this transformation left its mark on literature. Writers in London during the war were among civilians shocked by new sensory assaults and dramatic changes to the urban landscape. These material facts exerted pressures on the collective imagination and a major part of the literary response was an urgently-renewed interest in the problematics of space. The primary literary focus here is on Elizabeth Bowen and Henry Green, though work by other writers including Graham Greene, Mervyn Peake and William Sansom is also discussed. I draw on the philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty to illustrate the challenge phenomenological thinking posed to prevailing cultural conceptions of space in this period and to suggest how the war directed writers' attention to the role that embodied perception plays in composing spaces. I also examine how technological change, particularly development of the V2 rocket, shook established spatial thinking and I discuss how conceptual categories such as adjacence, linearity and sequence were further disrupted by the political divisions of post-war Europe. Documentary and diary sources are used to support literary evidence. English fiction changed abruptly and significantly in the 1940s because of a fresh spatial understanding emerging from the war which shaped the culture of the Cold War and the space race. This change demands reassessment of a decade often dismissed in literary history as a dull interlude between temporally-dominated high modernism and a postmodern ‘turn to the spatial.'

Abstract:

It has as starting point the elementary school of the old farm Almas in the municipality of Cariré north of state. Our goal is to understand the functioning of that school and its interface with culture rooted in semiarid landscapes typically from northeast. Traversing these paths we find the answers to same questions of our research, especially that one which seeks to justify the reasons that made those schools the protagonists of rural primary educacion during the twentieth century in our state. Our aim is to study from the educational developments in Brazil, despite the lack of resources, the importance of those schools houses, recognizing that many of them have emerged as an alternative to the education of populations in which the absence of conditions made impossible the displacement to other locations. In this way we contribute from our questions with the understanding of other teaching units and reflections of misguided policies that have been promoted in rural primary school. Then a typically urban education program without however meet the real needs of those populations beyond the suffering caused by the lack of assistence even lived with a social setting aggravated by long periods of drought.

Abstract:
At the beginning of the franco-british relations in black Africa, there was the process of their establishment on the African continent. Until the Second World War, the relations between France and Great Britain were impressed by distrust. . In 1940, the franco-german armistice led to the division of France and its empire. The, Great Britain had to deal with the hostility of the Vichy government in French West Africa and French Somaliland. Meanwhile, in French Equatorial Africa, the government of London established a war collaboration with free France. 1942 marked the end of this ambiguous cohabitation. France and Great Britain were then to undertake a colonial collaboration marked by the new ideological and political influences. Until 1950, the two countries had to fight against these anti-colonial influences by elaborating a common policy to oppose to the United Nations. They also tried to overcome african nationalism by giving little autonomy to their colonies. Although France and Great Britain had recognised that the colonial collaboration was a necessity, they did not prevent some failures due to the realities of their colonial administration systems

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the political relation between the construction project of the Passo D' Areia Housing Complex ( IAPI Village) in Porto Alegre and the political - party - union structure in the late 40's and early 50's. For that, the pattern of the citizen building in Brazil; was analyzed as one of the most important issues that emerged in the political scene in the 1930's. The paper's justification lies in the fact that the current academic production has not been evaluating the role of the working villages in the period described in here. It is a research based mostly in the documental analysis about the theme and in semi structured interviews. The issues are discussed in the following perspective: the first one brings a theoretical discussion about the citizenship in Brazil; the second one is about the Brazilian State and from 1930 on, putting emphasis on the corporatism in the New State period, in which the union policy, intertwined with the State via work legislation, structures the cooptation project; and the third aspect discusssed is the main point of the research - the IAPI Village. By that, the paper tries to understand in which ways the housing policies of the State turn into a currency exchange with some social groups. This case study is focused on a working village, allowing a view centered in the fact that the construction project of the regulated citizenship permitted public policies which object was to define the insertion of the workforce in the political process.

The pictures are part of the Inah Emil Martensen's Collection. The name of the collection is a tribute to one of the most distinguished persons of the cultural scene in Rio Grande at the 19th century. We will explain more about her relevance in this study. According to oral reports, we can infer that Inah Emil Martensen was a very important and activeperson in the artistic and cultural life of Rio Grande. Inah Emil Martensen acted as artist, influent woman, teacher, manager and event promoter. It was becauseof her relevance for the community that the Municipal Center of Culture was named after her, it is now called Municipal Center of Culture Inah Emil Martensen. In addition of a brief incursion into the universe of this emblematic figure in the history of Rio Grande, this research will examine more specifically the pictures of the 26 artists who were likely exhibiting in this municipality between 1940 and 1950. The photographs made this collection, once unknown, recognized and prominent among the community and the researchers. This study is about the subject of reading historical photographs, discussing documents as memory support and, consequently, as source of research
This dissertation historically studies the presence of Design as primary school subject matter. It was taken as the guiding question of the study: what are the finities of the drawing matter read in the official national and mining directives of the 1940-1950 decades? In the 1940s and 1950s, the teaching is governed by the Organic Law of Primary Education of 1946. The study is situated in the field of History of Mathematics Education, taking as theoretical-methodological references contributions from Cultural History, and considering school culture and disciplines or subjects as historical objects. In addition to the Organic Law for Primary Education, the Programs in Experience of Minas Gerais, published in the 1940s and republished until 1961, were examined. These programs brought the Integrated Design to teaching areas, presented as an auxiliary material, which appears as an activity of expression, observation and intuition. It assumes characteristics of a discipline based on the perspective of rudiments. By these considerations, it begins to constitute a teaching consubstantiated with the character of initiation to the school knowledge; with nothing to do with reference knowledge. Targeted at the primary education objectives, it was aligned with the school subjects constituting this school year - arithmetic, geometry, mother tongue, history and geography, science and hygiene

Abstract:
Abstract This paper describes the design and preliminary construction of a large bore engine cylinder flow bench. The flow bench is designed to experimentally determine the discharge coefficients of large bore engine ports and valves. The discharge coefficients are an integral part in modeling and predicting the airflow through an engine system. This information can be used by designers to better match turbochargers and intercoolers to engines, and can also provide critical information to enhance the accuracy of the Turbocharger-Reciprocating Engine Computer Simulation (T-RECS) that is currently under development at Kansas State University (KSU). Large bore engine cylinders are typically are 35–56 cm (14–22 in.) in diameter, and the engines they occupy have power outputs ranging 745–3730 kW (1000–6000 hp). In general, the majority of these engines were built in the 1940–1950’s. The importance of predicting the airflow rate through these engines has become paramount due to increasingly stringent EPA emission regulations.

Abstract:
This paper describes the collection and analysis of discharge coefficients from the ports of large-bore two-stroke cycle engines. The literature includes some information on discharge coefficients from very small ports. The literature was found to not include data collected from very large ports, such is in Cooper, Clark, and Worthington two-stroke cycle engines. The methodology was to construct and then use a flow bench that was sized for large-bore engine cylinder liners. The flow bench is designed to experimentally determine the discharge coefficients of large bore engine ports. The discharge coefficients are an integral part of determining the air flow rate through an engine, and in modeling and predicting the airflow through an engine system. This information can be used by designers to better match turbochargers and aftercoolers to engines. Large bore engine cylinders are typically are 35–56 cm (14–22 in.) in diameter, and have power outputs ranging 745–3730 kW (1,000–6,000 hp). In general, the majority of these engines were built in the 1940–1950’s. The importance of predicting the airflow rate through these engines has become paramount due to increasingly stringent EPA emission regulations. The data shows that there is a vast difference between the discharge coefficients of the three primary engines used in the natural gas industry.

Abstract:
In consideration of the extremely rapid progress in turbomachinery technology after the WWII, when the first gas engine was run, modern turbomachinery could be considered a young subject. Developments in computational power and numerical techniques since the 1940s, totally changed designer’s perspectives, giving them the possibilities to increase power and sophistication of design tools consolidated by years of laboratory and field tests from the 1940’s and 1950’s. A huge database from which, we believe, “there is still so much to be learned” (Cumpsty, 1986) [1]. On the other hand turbomachinery performance correlations, or even design procedures, have tended to be developed in individualistic ways. A reason for this has been the use of different approaches within engineering companies and the development of customized design tools and correlation of previous experience or performance optimization. These circumstances reflected in an extraordinary knowledge, hided by confidentiality and intellectual property issues. In this respect, proprietary design techniques acts as a barrier to the dissemination of concepts at the early stages such as the university. This paper illustrates the design process of an industrial fan as taught at Sapienza, University of Rome, during lectures of Turbomachinery Design. Objective of the class was to help students learn to develop their own design tools from the available suggested literature Horlock (1958, 1962, 1966) [2] [3] [4], Dixon (1975) [5], Lakshminarayana (1995) [6], Cumpsty (1989) [1] and Lewis (1996) [8]. Moreover, the activities were oriented to the use of open source software, specifically Scilab, used to code preliminary design and optimization routines as well as OpenFoam for the CFD verification step.

Abstract:
Öte yandan Amerikalı ressam Edward Hopper’in (1940- 1950) modernizmin kendisini yabancılaştırdığı, dış dünyadan soyutladığı, yalnızlaştırdığı insanları resmettiği eserleri, içinde bulunduğumuz günlerin bir kehanetidir adeta.

Abstract:
Building 220 at Harwell was built by the Ministry of Works as a Radiochemical Research and Development facility in the latter part of the 1940’s. The facility has been operational since 1949 and has been extended several times, most notably the Plutonium Glove Box Wing in the 1950’s and the Remote Handling Wing in the 1980’s. Only the Remote Handling wing remains operational, processing Historic Waste which is being recovered from storage holes elsewhere on site. The remainder of the facility is undergoing progressive strip out and decommissioning. In the Plutonium Wing and associated areas the waste ‘fingerprint’ (nuclide vector) consists predominately of alpha emitting radionuclides. Decommissioning and Decontamination (D&D) operations often result in the production of large volumes of scrap metal waste with little or no radioactive contamination. Proving that the waste is clean can be costly and time consuming, as the shape and size of the metallic waste items often means that it is difficult or impossible to monitor all surfaces using conventional hand-held survey meters. This is a particular problem for alpha contamination measurement. Traditional radiological surveying techniques are very labour intensive and involve surveyors checking every surface using hand held instruments and smear sampling the hard to access areas. Even then 100% monitoring cannot be guaranteed. An alternative to traditional methods is the Long Range Alpha Detection (LRAD) technique which remotely detects and measures secondary ionization created in air by alpha particle interactions, allowing extremely low levels of alpha contamination to be measured. A survey system, IonSens®, using the LRAD technique, was developed by BNFL Instruments Ltd (now Babcock Nuclear) which allows rapid surveying of scrap metal for alpha contamination at very low levels. Two versions of this system exist but both essentially comprise a measurement chamber into which scrap metal is placed and sealed while a measurement is carried out. Research Sites Restoration Ltd (RSRL) has purchased an IonSens® system with a single 2m long measurement chamber. This instrument is optimised for clearance monitoring of pipework of up to 150mm diameter. Testing and use of support baskets has enabled the instrument to be used as a clearance monitor for a wide range of metallic waste including hand tools. This paper illustrates how the instrument, and a robust consignment procedure, has been used to justify the clearance of several tonnes of metal wastes for recycling rather than paying for disposal of this material as low level waste.
