The genera of Salyavatinae are briefly discussed. Nudiscutella frontispina Murugan & Livingstone, 1990 is considered a junior synonym of Paralisarda malabarica Miller, 1957 syn. nov. Thirteen species are transferred from Petalocheirus Palisot de Beauvois, 1805 and the following new combinations are proposed: Alvilla gulosa (Miller, 1940) comb. nov.; Alvilla obesa (Miller, 1940) comb. nov.; Alvilla spinosissima (Distant, 1903) comb. nov.; Alvilla tyrannus (Miller, 1940) comb. nov.; Platychiria congolensis (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; Platychiria lapidaria (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; Platychiria montana (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; Platychiria praecox (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; Platychiria similis (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; Platychiria striata (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; Platychiria ugandensis (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; Platychiria unicolor (Miller, 1950) comb. nov.; and Rhachicephala fasciata (Distant, 1903) comb. nov.. Abstract:
During the 1940s, racial differences in wages narrowed at an unusually rapid pace. Using a decomposition technique different from that of previous studies, the author shows that wage compression between and within groups—the so-called “Great Compression”—was a major factor behind racial wage convergence in the 1940s. In addition to wage compression, occupational shifts, internal migration, and diminishing racial differences in schooling helped to narrow the black-white wage gap between 1940 and 1950.

Abstract:
El objetivo de este trabajo es mostrar que los integrantes de las asociaciones holguineras en el período comprendido entre 1940 y 1950, pertenecían a las clases más acomodadas económicamente en la ciudad, condición favorable para proponer y desarrollar acciones públicas en el ayuntamiento municipal —a partir de iniciativas privadas— con alcance en el sector de los servicios utilitarios, así como intentar solucionar algunos problemas de la cotidianidad. Por su parte, estos miembros lograron integrar a sus acciones a decenas de vecinos en pro del mejoramiento y reconocimiento de la ciudad como una de las más importantes de la provincia de Oriente. Para la elaboración de este artículo, la metodología utilizada ha privilegiado el paradigma cualitativo, utilizando métodos del nivel teórico, entre los que se encuentran: 1) lógico e inductivo-deductivo, para la interpretación de la información; 2) análisis y crítica de fuentes, tomando como procedimiento los métodos del pensamiento lógico-histórico aplicado a las fuentes consultadas; 3) método hermenéuticoliterario, utilizado para realizar inferencias a partir de la documentación consultada.

Texto apresenta questões sobre o ensino secundário no estado do Paraná, assinalando o final da década de 1940 como marco do processo de expansão do nível de ensino. As fontes mobilizadas indicam aspectos sociais que modificaram a demanda pelo ensino secundário, as ações governamentais para procurar atender às necessidades e as contradições do processo de expansão. Tais questões dão contornos a uma rede de estabelecimentos públicos de ensino secundário numericamente superior às instituições da esfera privada, embora os óbices da expansão possam ter dificultado a garantia de acesso ao ensino secundário para uma parcela mais significativa da população. Ao final, localiza o engendramento de debates e ações visando à transformação desse nível de ensino.

Acreditamos que o interesse crescente por essa temática no Brasil em geral, e não somente em São Paulo, aos poucos possa delinear um perfil mais definido sobre quem eram essas mulheres.

At a joint meeting of the American Astronomical Society and the American Physical Society held in June of 1940, the University of Michigan astronomer Dean McLaughlin (1940) gave a review of the current understanding of stellar evolution. At the end he somewhat facetiously remarked that, “For several years I have told students that I knew all about stellar evolution in 1923, less is 1925, and nothing at all since 1930.” I would like to suggest that those dates were not chosen randomly, and in the first part of my own survey of stellar evolution to 1950, I would like to explain the significance of those dates.

Abstract:
This article seeks to explore cinematic representations of rural life during the Occupation and the immediate post-war period. Films about the countryside were not new as France had long enjoyed what could be called a ‘rural cinema’ largely through the highly successful film versions of Marcel Pagnol's novels and plays. During the Occupation, rural films continued to celebrate pastoral life despite considerable conflict between urban and rural. Film historians have argued that in doing so, they simply endorsed Vichy's ideology of le retour à la terre and its adulation of le paysan. Yet, as I will argue, in the context of a divided nation, these films were far more significant than existing research has acknowledged and indeed conveyed a profound longing for a unified France in their suggestion that there was an inextricable link between countryside and city. Post-war films with rural themes still articulated the tensions and contrasts between the two but more intensely, by presenting the city as eternally seductive but ultimately dangerous for the rural émigré. By this deliberate juxtaposition of conflicting images, these films sought to reunite a dispersed population by ‘relocating’ rural and urban dwellers in their natural and appropriate spheres.

El ideal de la madre amorosa y protectora en las décadas posteriores a la revolución mexicana se politizaba y alentaba la expansión de los esfuerzos institucionales y discursivos a favor del fortalecimiento del binomio madre-hijo. En tal sentido, autoridades y especialistas se preocupaban porque el “mandato” materno llegara a buen término. En la práctica, había mujeres que no deseaban ser madres, algunas sufrían ante el impedimento de ser madres, muchas eran madres solteras, otras se veían obligadas a trabajar para subsistir sin tener tiempo suficiente para la crianza de sus hijos, varias se relacionaban con ellos a través de conductas violentas y en el extremo estaban las que encontraban en el delito una posibilidad para dirimir situaciones conflictivas en torno al ser madre. A partir del análisis de conductas criminales se busca comprender las variadas formas existentes de experimentar la maternidad por parte de las capitalinas de los diferentes sectores sociales, así como el contexto sociocultural en el que adquirían significado sus acciones en relación con la procreación. Para ello se utilizan procesos judiciales por aborto, infanticidio, abandono y robo de infante, nota roja y artículos especializados de la época.

Abstract:
У статті на значному теоретичному та ілюстративному матеріалі окреслено особливості вільного вірша в українській материковій і діаспорній поезії середини ХХ ст. (1940–1950-ті роки), позначеної домінуван- ням метричних форм. Зміст верлібрового твору, якому автор надає рис того чи того жанру (медитація, пейзаж, сон, спогад тощо), переносить семан- тичні акценти із зовнішнього на внутрішній світ. Важливим тут є й сти- лістичний чинник, з огляду на стрімкі зміни в індивідуальній манері письма поетів, спричинені реаліями суспільного, політичного та культурного життя нашої країни в середині ХХ ст. Завдяки поодиноким, але прикметним поетичним досягненням у верлі- бристиці тієї доби стало можливим усунути «білі плями» у дослідженні її розвитку. Це й зумовило актуальність роботи та її мету – виявити особливі риси українського верлібру 1940–1950-х років у зіставленні з метричною пое- зією окремого автора. Так, у віршах поетів материкових (Павло Тичина, Андрій Малишко, Федір Потушняк) та діаспорних (Михайло Орест, Леонід Мосендз, Євген Маланюк) очевидними є виразні переходи від раннього модернізму (неоромантизму та символізму) до паростків постмодерного стилю інколи навіть в одному творі. У 1940–1950-х роках дедалі потужніше виявляється сакральний, зокрема містичний, елемент ліричної оповіді, показаний через природні та релігійні концепти. Метафору «храм природи», де головним обрядом є поетична творчість, оприявнено в медитативних інтонаціях, завдяки яким українські культурні архетипи інтегруються у загальнокультурний макрокосмос. Віль- новіршові картини світу кожного автора постають на основі синтезу жан- рово-стильових, образних, композиційних домінант і поєднуються концептом свободи як можливістю вільного добору зображально-виражальних засобів. Такий підхід визначає іманентність верлібру української поезії завдяки нерів- номірним ритмам, якими уособлено порухи душі поета.

O objetivo deste artigo é o de realizar um balanço crítico das interpretações acerca do significado, do lugar e da função do conceito de democracia racial no pensamento do sociólogo Alberto Guerreiro Ramos. Partindo do levantamento crítico de alguns comentadores (Marcos Chor Maio, Antonio Sérgio Alfredo Guimarães, Muryatan Santana Barbosa e Luiz Augusto Campos), pretendemos mostrar que o conceito de democracia racial foi apropriado da intelectualidade acadêmica pelos intelectuais militantes negros dos anos de 1940 e 1950 e transformado em: a) um projeto político e social de integração das populações negras à estrutura social competitiva em emergência; e b) numa terapêutica das subjetividades colonizadas a partir da estética da negritude. Por fim, faremos uma síntese das continuidades e rupturas entre a democracia racial segundo seus intérpretes tradicionais e conforme os militantes negros dos anos de 1940 e 1950, sobretudo a partir da obra de Guerreiro Ramos.

Curitiba, década de 1940. Os colégios católicos femininos da cidade ainda se organizavam para a fundação de escolas normais como oferta de ensino profissional em nível secundário às jovens mulheres da época. Nas décadas de 1940 e 1950, o magistério era o ponto alto para a formação da jovem mulher curitibana, especialmente no Instituto de Educação do Paraná (antiga Escola Normal). Mas "ser normalista" não seria a única opção às jovens mulheres daquela época. Em 1942 é fundado o Instituto Comercial São José (logo depois, Escola Técnica de Comércio São José, 1944), o primeiro projeto educativo de ensino profissional, em nível secundário, das Irmãs de São José no Paraná que já atuavam na área educacional - e não somente nessa área - na cidade e em outras localidades paranaenses. Nos anos 1940/1950 foi esse o único estabelecimento católico de ensino voltado à formação da jovem mulher em área técnica de comércio na cidade. Em todo o período estudado (1942-1955) quase 300 jovens mulheres foram formadas pela Escola para atuar no comércio como: auxiliares de escritório, contadoras e contabilistas (Técnico em Contabilidade). O presente artigo apresenta, em linhas gerais, alguns dos motivos que colaboraram para que as jovens mulheres realizassem seus estudos na área comercial e não no magistério, e como esse ensino geralmente conformado à formação masculina pode ser desenvolvido em um colégio católico feminino.

Desde la década de 1920, en la Argentina cobró fuerza una acción pública orientada al diagnóstico y a la búsqueda de soluciones en materia vial, delineándose un consenso en torno a su importancia para el progreso material y moral de la nación. En las décadas de 1940 y 1950, la planificación de la política nacional adquirió mayores bríos, aunque fuentes de época destacan desequilibrios territoriales, manifestando la escasez y malas condiciones de los caminos en ámbitos rurales, y su impacto decisivo no sólo en la dinámica productiva sino también en la calidad de vida. Frente a estas expresiones, nos preguntamos en qué medida los gobiernos asumieron dichas falencias y las incorporaron a la agenda pública. ¿Qué argumentos eran empleados para impulsar la red vial y qué intereses eran priorizados? Para responder estos interrogantes, examinamos representaciones sociales gubernamentales -en especial de la provincia de Buenos Aires- alrededor de la red vial en las décadas de 1940 y 1950.
