Abstract:
Little is known about the social correlates of serial rape or about trends in offending across time and space in the United States. Furthermore, the limited serial rape scholarship that exists was largely generalized from small, captive samples. The current study aims to amplify our understanding of serial rape by pursuing three fundamental objectives. First, guided by theory and research we propose a new, more precise, and comprehensive conceptualization of serial rape. Next, we draw from media representations of serial rape published in five major American newspapers from 1940 to 2010 to develop an offender social profile and to identify patterns in attack style. Our analysis of a broad and diverse sample of serial offenders described in media accounts ( N = 1,037) produced the following profile estimates—age: 27 years; race/ethnicity: African American, 46%; Caucasian, 29%; Latino, 19%; Asian, 5%. Most offenders were employed in unskilled or semiskilled occupations and the most common attack strategy was the surprise approach (47%). Finally, our data allow us to estimate and interpret historical trends as depicted in media accounts. Our analysis revealed low levels of serial rape in newspaper accounts during the 1940s to 1950s, followed by a steady increase (with periodic decreases) leading to a peak in 1991. This peak is followed by a steady and dramatic decline from 1992 to 2010.

Designer, architect, educator, researcher, critic, polemicist, Arie’s multifaceted and ceaseless activity was, sadly, cut short just a week after his participation and lectures at the docomomo Congress and Icomos in Mexico, last August. His formative years at the Architecture faculties in Montevideo, Uruguay, and the Technion in Haifa during the late sixties, were decisive for his long lasting belief in the Modern Movement instrumental role in the creation of “A new society” and, in his words, “A creative relation between people, their environment and their time”.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Farming is a major sector of informal employment for more than 67 per cent of the active labour force in Tanzania. This means farming is of primary importance to the overall economy. Rural transformations and the future of agriculture in Tanzania depend mainly upon improved access to market outlets, guarantees on improved seeds, and availability of farm-loans. These are essential interventions to transform the rural sector despite the challenges it is facing. An overview of government interventions in rural development policy and activity is offered here by focusing on Ismani, part of the present-day Iringa District in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. Agrarian change in Ismani through the 1940s to the 1970s depended upon government interventions on the one hand, and changes in the physical environment on the other. Initially during this period, Ismani became a national food granary in the 1970s as a result of government interventions. Then this progress turned upside down in the 1980s, when the development of Ismani took on a new dimension due to a rapid decline in maize productivity. In recent years, especially over the last two decades, Ismani has experienced recurrent food insecurity. Evidence of the drastic change emerges from reliance on archival sources, fieldwork interviews and secondary sources collected in 2012, 2013 and 2017. This paper explores the dynamics of maize farming in Ismani, to provide a detailed historical understanding of how a prosperous maize farming area can become, in the space of only a few years, an area which is now rife with localised food insecurity in many of its villages.

Estoloides (Parestoloides) Breuning, 1940, and Mimestoloides Breuning, 1974 are synonymized with Estoloides Breuning, 1940. Mimestoloides Breuning, 1980 is synonymized with Spinestoloides Breuning, 1954. Estoloides aurantius Martins & Galileo, 2010 is synonymized with E. scabracaulis Chemsak & Noguera, 1993. Estoloides modica Chemsak & Noguera, 1993 is synonymized with E. chamelae Chemsak & Noguera, 1993. Estoloides (Spinestoloides) spinipennis Breuning, 1974, is synonymized with Esthlogena monticola (Fisher, 1942). Estoloides (Spinestoloides) Breuning, 1954 is considered a genus different from Estoloides. Notes on Pseudestoloides Breuning and Heyrovsky, 1961, Pseudestoloides costaricensis Breuning and Heyrovsky, 1961, Pseudestoloides affinis Martins and Galileo, 2009, and on the type of Estoloides (Parestoloides) costaricensis Breuning, 1940, are provided. Pseudestoloides hiekei Breuning, 1974, is transferred to Estoloides. The following new combinations are established: Spinestoloides monticola; Spinestoloides fasciatus (Martins & Galileo, 2010); Spinestoloides benardi (Breuning, 1980); Estoloides andresi (Breuning, 1974); and Estoloides hiekei (Breuning, 1974). With the synonymy of Estoloides (Parestoloides), the following species have the subgenus removed from their names: Estoloides basigranulata Breuning, 1943: E. costaricensis Breuning, 1940; E. esthlogenoides Breuning, 1943; and E. parva Breuning, 1940. The following new species are described: Estoloides vandenberghei, from Nicaragua; E. maesi, from Nicaragua; E. nayeliae, from Mexico; E. noguerai, from Mexico and Nicaragua; E. chiapensis, from Mexico; E. pubescens, from Mexico; E. schusteri, from Guatemala; E. dthomasi, from Mexico; E. morrisi, from Mexico; E. giesberti, from Honduras; E. uyucana, from Honduras; Spinestoloides hefferni from Panama; and Pseudestoloides bingkirki from Nicaragua. The male of Spinestoloides spinipennis (Breuning, 1954), and the female of Estoloides prolongata are described for the first time. Keys to separate Estoloides, Pseudestoloides and Spinestoloides, from each other, and to species of Pseudestoloides and Spinestoloides are provided. Estoloides chamelae is newly recorded from Chiapas, Colima, Oaxaca and Guerrero in Mexico; E. prolongata is newly recorded from Costa Rica; and E. rufipes is newly recorded from the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo. The holotypes of Estoloides alboscutellaris Breuning, 1943 (Fig. 13), E. annulicornis Breuning, 1940 (Fig. 14), and E. reflexa Breuning, 1940 (Fig. 15) are also figured for the first time.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract: The educational system of Argentina has undergone a process of decentralization along with a steady growth in private schools enrolment. This complex process is usually subsumed under the general concept of ‘privatization’. We have considered it necessary to provide a deeper understanding of the multiple dimensions this process of privatization encompasses. In this article we intend to analyze and reflect upon the transformations of the Argentine educational system and to understand the specific levels and aspects where privatization has taken place. We note that the public and the private sectors seem to have experienced divergent trajectories with compromising effects in terms of equity and social cohesion. We argue that the uneasy coexistence of a deregulated independent private sector and a hyperregulated public sector is the result of a partial and inadequate implementation of a public-private partnership scheme.
