Full textApartheid as a system which set up strict segregation between races and whose ultimate aim was the foundation of an entirely white South Africa, was introduced officially when the National Party took power in 1948.Reports and descriptions on the different aspects of the system have been published in the main French Christian newspapers and periodicals, Catholic and Reformed. Beyond just delivering information, Christian groups enquired into the nature of the system (particularly its religious nature) and its effect on the black population. They were organised in small groups, religious affiliations and in ecumenic activities. It was these groups that fostered different types of campaigns and possible forms of Christian involvement. South Africa, albeit distant, was a subject of reflection among French Christians, about their own reaction towards the political aspect of the matter and their position on the social doctrine of Apartheid, particularly in the case of the Catholics. The Protestants, in dealing with the South African question, confronted themselves with pre-existent tensions between different internal strains.Moving beyond politics towards the general area of the defence of human rights, active French Christians scrutinised the hostility of certain South African churches towards the Pretoria regime and contributed to the elaboration of a contestation theology born in a context of crisis. If certain groups pondered and acted on Apartheid, French Christians on an individual level became involved on South African ground in more concrete campaigns among the oppressed population

Full textFrom the beginning of the 1950s after the signature (september 10th, 1952) and the ratification (march 18th, 1953) of the german-israeli reparation agreement, an israeli purchasing mission symbolizes a formal, but provisional, link between the frg and israel. This link may then embody the basis of a deeper formalization of the relations between bonn and jerusalem, and the development of de facto links between the both capitals leads to a reflection on that matter. The present study turns on the evolution of the israeli, jewish and westgerman ideas relating to the question of diplomatic relations between the frg and israel, at the government level as well as at this of the political parties, jewish organisations or personages and of private german associations. On the basis of the analysis of the de facto relations between the two countries, the present study allows to proceed to the observation of the conceptions and motivations of several interveners since the reparation agreement until spring 1956. The period in question has been characterized by the development of a multilateral reflection : this reflection is market, on israel's side, by the passage from an absolute refusal of definitively established links with bonn to the proposal of the establishment of a west-german commercial office on the israeli territory, as a direct precondition to diplomatic relations, because of reasons lying in the international situation of the jewish State ; on west Germany's side, in the same time the opinion moves from a good disposition towards a quick establishment of solid links with Jerasulem to the refusal of the israeli offer because of foreign policy reasons not specific to the middle-East at all. For its part, the analysis of the conception of the political parties, the Jewish and west-german personages alloxs to underline the agreements and clashes between those factors and the attitudes of Bonn and Jerusalem

Benetollo, Anne. "Rock et politique : censure, opposition, intégration." Paris 1, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997PA010656.
Full textThe point of this work is to analyse the ambiguous relationship between rock and the political world in the united states. Three occurences are feasible : when politics censure, when the artists commit themselves politically and when the politicians use the artists, particularly with a political end in view. The eighties and more exactly 1985 - constitute a privileged period for the observation of the intricate bonds that link rock and politics. Why? On the one hand, in 1985, we attented the birth of an association which was created by some politicians' wives : the parents' music resource center (pmrc), (whose aim is, though it denies it, to censure some rock songs), and on the other hand, the mid-eighties were marked by the first charity concerts. What is surprising is that a tiny part of rock performers are fighting against the PMRC; most of them have invested in those charity concerts, and their only political commitment lies in this. We simultaneously notice that even in the eighties the politicians have not always have a conflicting relationship with rock stars (the latest often being won over by politicians). Although this work is based on the mid-eighties, it is necessary to go back to the previous decades so as to study the advance which entailed the explosion of the pmrc. This will enable us to show how politics - or let's say the establishment - has always clashed with this musical trend and censured it (in fact, we realize that rock has always been blamed for the same things, and in this way the pmrc hasn't invented anything). This will also enable us to study the political commitment of the artists at important moments of the history of rock, and at last to underline the privileged relationship politicians were able to weave with some rock performers

Full textThrough a comparative analysis of the novels of Houellebecq, Dantec, Ellis and Gibson, this dissertation attempts to define the transnational literary genre that I call The Posthuman Novel. The posthuman novelists are children of the media-age. Their abilities to use and abuse media coverage makes them experts in the orchestration of various scandals, which illustrate the evolution of the status of literature at the mass media age, and the position of the writer, between intellectual engagement and star system. These texts can be defined first ideologically as discourses of the endings: End of the world and apocalyptic aesthetics; end of man and death of the character. The posthuman age is the defeat of the individual. Generally the posthuman writers are testifying to the loss of those modern conceptions of man, space and time inspired by transcendence and ideals. We will also observe the novels endings as they illustrate a problematic relationship with utopia. This pessimistic discourse is elaborated through a highly satirical style, which reveals the provocative and prophetic stance of these writers. The stylistic analysis of the satiric techniques shows that satire functions as a moral position, linked to prophecy, but also as a narrative technique which reveals the mutations of language and makes the global language audible. These linguistic mutations give way to a generic redefinition of the novel. Phenomena such as simulation and massification question the generic limits of the texts. The integration of virtual spaces in the narrative questions the fictional space, the staging of tourism questions the construction of the plot and the gothic pattern contribute to the derealisation of these fictions. In fact, the posthuman writers build the model of a disincarnated novel – a novel which has freed itself of the limits of realism, but has also lost touch with the flesh. Those narratives obsessed by the actual, are loosing sight of the living

Full textThe recognition of productivity in France is the fruit of a long process which, depending on the economic situation and the particular French context, involved several groups of people with different concerns. Productivity first guided the work of engineers and company directors between the two World Wars. Productivity then entered into theories of statisticians and economists who, like André L. A. Vincent at the “Institut de Conjoncture”, thought deeply about technical progress, national accounting and economic information during World War II. Finally, in 1945, when efforts are made to rebuild and modernize the French economy to catch up with America's high living standards, productivity is at the core of the strategies implemented by technocrats like Jean Fourastié, Fourth Republic politicians like Robert Buron, company directors and trade-unions officials who peopled ministerial cabinets and semi-official commissions like the “Commissariat du Plan”. With the help of the United States Technical Assistance Program (USTAP), of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and thanks to the “psychological shock” of the productivity missions, this small but influent “bataillon sacré de la productivité” sought to convince the French of the need to import new working methods and to pacify industrial relations
Alos, Anselmo Peres.
Letter, body and desire : a comparative reading of Puig, Abreu and Bayly aims at analyzing in a contrastive way three representative novels of the problematic of the male homosexual identity in Latin America: Manuel Puig´s El beso de la mujer araña (Argentine, 1976), Caio Fernando Abreu´s Onde andará Dulce Veiga? (Brazil, 1990) and Jaime Bayly´s No se lo digas a nadie (Peru, 1994). The articulation of a queer epistemology allows us to think about textuality as a place of dramatization of a politic fiction that questions the heteronormative patterns of sex and gender, and proposes a strategy of resistance based both on bodies and pleasures and on politics of representation and reinvention of masculinities and femininities. Taking feminist assumptions, narratology and queer theory/epistemology as theoretical basis, it is made a critical reading of these novels, which are presented against the heteronormative model and invest in the subversive potential of a place of enunciation in the literary discourse marked by difference and resistance to the heteronormative disposals of regulation of sexual identities. Through the principles of narratology, it is also studied in which way (or ways) the narrative is configured as a space of negotiation, from a queer perspective, of nationality, sexuality and gender in the enunciation of these novels. In this sense, literature rewrites both the sexual body, seen as the place of individual subjectivity, and the social/national body, understood as a fiction that balances body and sexual sociabilities. At last, the contradictions and impasses that emerge from the novels are analyzed, particularly in which concerns questions of race, class and gender, as well as the potentialities and problematic points of a queer poetics as a place of cultural intervention, intending the construction and the comprehension of this queer poetics, where new arranges of social legibility are projected in a performative way.

Clermont-Ferrand 2, 1990. http://www.theses.fr/1990CLF20026.
Full textPhilippe soupault was expelled from the surrealist group in november 1926. Surrealist documents give the impression that only literary grievances were held against him. Breton claimed that he combatted the supporter of " the literarty adventure" in order to prevent the isolation of surrealism. However, the accusations levelled against soupault do not stand up to analysis. Many surrealists were regular contributers to la revue europeenne and to the editions du sagittaire, directed by soupault. As for the novel, the surrealist position was far less categoric than it would seem to be believad today. Finally, soupault did not prostitute his pen as was claimed in the tract lautreamont envers et contre tout. Until the end of 1926 he participated lawfully in the activities of the movement. The double exclusion in november 1926 of soupault and artaud must accordingly be replaced in the political context. Andre breton's decision to join the communist party was in opposition to the convictions of the majority of the surrealists. Soupault believed in the liberating power of poetry. Taking into account the failure of the collaboration which clarte, in 1925, he refused to advance further and opposed breton. The failure of the adhesion to the communist party vindicated those expelled in november 1926 : breton's stubborness in following this path provoked the splitting up of the group in 1929 and appears devoid of sens

As regards involvement: does it stem from a nation's culture, psychology or state of mind?

Full textThis dissertation examines the development of the concept of subjectivity in the context of French criticism of poststructuralism by drawing on the work of three authors : Cornelius Castoriadis (1922-1997), Marcel Gauchet (born 1946) and Alain Renaut (born 1948). The research focuses on their critiques towards Michel Foucault (1926-1984) and explores their respective definitions of the notion of subject. The core question concerns the link between subject and autonomy : Why do all three authors reproach Foucault for giving up individual and political autonomy with his understanding of the subject, and do they open up new prospects for rethinking the subject as an autonomous political agent ? The different approaches put forward by Castoriadis, Gauchet and Renaut display that the French critique of poststructuralism is heterogeneous : Renaut advocates a return of reason and thus joins the work of Jürgen Habermas in Germany. Castoriadis, for his part, draws on French phenomenology by proposing to discover the human capacity of creation. Gauchet combines structuralist as well as phenomenological presuppositions. From a German perspective, a better knowledge of these phenomenologically inspired critiques of poststructuralism would be beneficial in order to open up further prospects for revising the concepts of subject and autonomy after Foucault

Full textPostmodernism is the state of culture of the contemporary world and postmodernity the corresponding historical period. During the 1970's, postmodern theories enjoyed a considerable development at the time when the lebanese civil war (1975-1990) erupted. Ilyas Khuri, a lebanese author born in 1948, experienced violence and defeats. His novels express the fragmentation of the country and the narration. Postmodernism in literature proves to be a paradigm to interpret his writings. Our approach helps to reveal the central role of engagement and values despite the collapse of big narratives. It enlights the underlying tensions of his novels. The interaction between text and context helps to grasp the change process of his literary writings. Ilyas Khuri literary works bring therefore distinctive answers to current questions

Full textIn the " dark times " of the twentieth century, the weight of history was further increased by mass horrors, affecting the very image of man. As a result, somme call upon drama to revive, as Aristotle put it, “the sense of human”. Can the real object be up to the part ? The poor object, introduced on the art scene, and later on, right after World War I (Shwitters) or World War II (Kantor), under the aspect of remnants or ruins, is obviously connected to disappearance – of ideas, beings, things. Through the study of the drama scene which has been developing over the last thirty years under the aegis of the discarded object, one realizes that the latter is very much present in puppet shows, street arts or a certain form of “more main stream” drama, and this despite its insignifiance. There, it plays the part of an objector to performance, to representation but also to the obsolescence and following neglect that museums and commemorations attempt to make up for. Nowadays, this few of them flirting with hoax, in wich memory resemble a refuge against the turmoils of history as well as resisting force to engulfing anonimity. Poetically speaking, the object forces the actor to renounce egotism and establish a dialogue with that which Kantor considered a full-fledges partner. In fine, this work is an ttempt to grasp the legacy of the Polish director who died in 1990, as so many artists and companies, from the Théâtre du Radeau, to the Deschamps & Makeïeff Compagny and the 26 000 couverts, see in him a source of inspiration for their own work

Full textThis work aims to answer the question :"what does it mean to construct Europe?". The study of one group, french top civil servants, offers the opportunity to transcend the conflicting positions which typify the discourse on Europe, allowing for the analysis of the european dynamic at a twofold level : that of community institutions and that of national administrations. Studying the years 1948-54 provides, in the first place, a means of restoring the specific configuration of top civil servants with respect to issues at stake in the construction of Europe. If, as bailey has proposed, it brings to light a structuring in terms of working-groups, this pre-history reveals, most strikingly, the cloudy beginnings, competing and often endogenous, of the construction of Europe, a process which should really be considered in the plural. The initial commitment of these first working-groups appeared to be subsequently thwarted by the development of Europe as a community, investment in the EEC was now becoming more marginal. Out of step with the times, or as actors playing a secondary role, these new civil servants would nevertheless give the administration in Brussels its "french style", and so contributing to creating true path dependence. From the mid-1980s, a more legitimate generation was to carry through the "liberal" treaty of Rome project, enabling the ENA to portray itself as "european". From then on, the vision of a linear process of europeanisation, just as depicting it as an abrupt change, recedes into the background. One finds instead a plurality of autonomous processes, taking divergent directions, up until the neo-liberal turn-around described by Jobert. Finally, Europe takes form in Paris, the form reflecting pre-existing rivalries between different poles of the top administration, principally financiers, diplomats and the members of Conseil d'état. Full textIn the context of the progressive (re-)democratization of the Central American isthmus during the 1990s, the sub-genre of the historical novel lived a new boom inscribing itself in a global tendency on the Latin American sub-continent. Women writers in the isthmus not only started to make their presence felt in the novel, in general, scarcely cultivated by them up to that moment, but participated actively in the new enthusiasm provoked by the mise en fiction of history, a phenomenon barely studied by Central American literary criticism up until then. This study is based on the textual analysis of seven novels published between 1992 and 2007 by six Central American women writers. It seeks to demonstrate that the fictional writing of these Central American women novelists is characterized by a certain number of specific features that do not depend on biology but represent a historical approach that predominantly focuses on women, the marginalised and those excluded from power. On the other hand, it also tries to show that at the same time this writing is part of a more general tendency that we have termed the "aesthetics of trace": a progressive evolution of the historic novel towards the novel of historical memory. In this way, the present research about a literature still too marginalized in European universities, aims at contributing to the analysis of the modes of history writing chosen by women writers in Central America and to the comprehension of the change of paradigm, which the historical novel is undergoing at this moment, not only in the Central American region, but also in a number of Latin American countries that are marked by a process of political transition

The “Tasso Era” shapes up a unique moment within the political history of the State of Ceara, and one’s understanding of this social phenomenon will also help with an analysis of Brazil today. This work aims at grasping a particular political aspect in this federative state, encompassing late decades, and taking into account the “Tasso Era” as a new cycle of bourgeois hegemony: a historical detailed aspect of politics in the state that anticipates the neoliberal hegemony in Brazil. Leaning on Gramsci, the author approaches that bourgeois hegemonic cycle, considering its “methodological criterion”, to uncover the actual situation in the state as seen in late decades: an experimental period of economic and political modernization, supported by politics of a conservative nature, that gives bodily form to a historical epoch, namely, a conflicting convergence within Brazilian democratic process in the 80’s leading to the country’s insertion in the world of capital dominance seen in the following decades. Starting from a redefining of Gramsci’s theory of Hegemony and his categories of “hegemony”, “passive revolution”, “transformism” and “State”, the author develops a reflection about politics highlighting, not in an exclusive way, its instances of political processes, which allows one to configure the “Tasso Era” as a political, cultural and economic hegemonic cycle of major electoral force. Electoral alliances that were established by CIC’s entrepreneurial elite and give support to the “Tasso Era” are, therefore, the leading thread for this work. By means of research of documents and newspapers, the several electoral campaigns of the hegemonic cycle (1986, 1990, 1994 and 1998) are presented by the author, and the inner workings of alliances, the political-party behavior of representatives associated with the entrepreneurial elite and the resisting force of state political family groups were captured. It remains evident that the new elite is trying hard to present itself as a political option not only to backward sectors of the political spectrum but also to left-wing parties and social movements that once opposed it, thus consolidating its strength on growing supporting from oligarchic sectors that derive their power from local political tradition. The author analyses classical works, such as Faoro and Leal, as well as contemporary studies that have approached this general aspect of the political Brazilian reality. Therefore, the “Tasso Era” presents itself as a new hegemonic cycle that shaped itself from a “change from above” and renewed the political process in the state of Ceara and at the same time reestablished several elements of traditional politics: a new hegemonic cycle that promoted a reshape of forces within the dominant classes at a time of huge social mobilization.

Full text"Death of the subject", "return of the subject", Postmodern subject" - modern criticism is not short of such notions and formulae. To know precisely what these mean is, however, another matter entirely... Whilst understanding the contemporary poses an intellectual challenge of one kind, defining the subject poses another of equal importance. For this reason, it seemed methodologically appropriate to define the specificities of the subject today by considering the three dimensions it assumes in the works of contemporary writers - namely the scholarly, the fabulous and the fictional. The corpus of works considered in this study comprises about thirty imaginary lives and meditative essays - literary forms which have developed mainly during the last quarter of the 20th century. These texts, by four relatively well-established literary figures, (P. Michon, G. Macé, P. Quignard and F. Delay) mingle both fiction and reality. It was firstly necessary to determine how the break with the Formalist era had affected the writing of the authors considered. In this regard, they were found to be locking for a more concrete way of self-expression thus avoiding the potential pitfalls inherent in subjective writing. that this re-analysis of subjectivity in the chosen texts equally affects the delicate characterises our times and illustrative of one of the forms of lyricism in contemporary prose. Such tensions in contemporary writing do not lead so much to rupture as to the beginnings of a new configuration. With a lightness, a spectral luminosity and a depth of complexity with a translucent quality, the hologram represents a rich set of metaphors for contemporary writing and the dynamic of the character within our texts. Neither an active force within the world nor disabused by it, the contemporary subject is above all a dreamer constructing its own worlds in which to take place ; altering the present in order to approach others, the contemporary subject presents itself as open to relationships with others, and constitutes a new lyrical entity brought forth by a whispering voice between the real world and the imagined

Full textThis thesis examines the literary representation of migration from a colony to the imperial metropolis in the period of decolonisation through a comparative analysis of novels by Anglophone Caribbean and Francophone Maghribi writers about migration to Britain and France respectively. A major point of convergence is the focus on the relationship of domination. Lamming, Chraïbi and Kateb address this explicitly as a colonial relationship that is psychological and cultural as well as economic, whereas the 1970s writers Boudjedra and Ben Jelloun place both immigration and colonisation within a wider framework of capitalist exploitation. The difficult material conditions and the racism targeting immigrants are not depicted for their own sake but are the occasion of a wide-ranging critique of European modernity. Maghribi writers attack the rationality of Western civilisation as oppressive, whereas the Caribbean novelists focus on the colonial roots of attitudes to non-Europeans. Both sets of writers nonetheless provide responses to European colonialist discourse and to the positive self-presentation of the coloniser through the manipulation of narrative point of view and voice and through the theme of mental breakdown. Most of the novelists set out to refute negative representations of immigrants by restoring aspects they feel are neglected, in particular the emotional dimension of the immigrant experience and the colonial determinants of the relationship between immigrants and natives. In doing so their representations of immigration often conform to the immigrant figure underpinning the discourses they attack. Their preoccupations are distinct from those of later writers and recent discourses about Caribbean and Maghribi populations in Britain and France : with the exception of Selvon and, more ambiguously, Mengouchi and Ramdane, the novelists are not interested in the process of formation of ethnic-diasporic minorities in France and Britain

Full textBased on the original French and South African archives, this dissertation examines the relationship between France and South Africa under the administration of Charles de Gaulle et Georges Pomidou. Several elements explain why this relation may be qualified as « special »: the fact that South Africa didn’t belong to the traditional zone of French influence, the context in which this relation emerges (the process of decolonization along with the international condemnation of the regime of apartheid), its specialization (the close cooperation in the military and nuclear field) and its official atypical frame. Divided into four chronological parts, the dissertation presents the evolution of this « special relationship » and its different dimensions: bilateral (relations in military, nuclear and economic field), regional (relations in Southern Africa, in zone of the Indian Ocean and in Africa) and multilateral (debats at UN, IMF and EEC). By analyzing the discussions within the French institutions and the statements in international arena, this study reconstructs the ambiguous attitude of France towards the question of apartheid, the contradictions of the French policy of national independence as well of the French African policy. While the dissertation emphasizes the official framework, it also tempts to analyses the role of intermediates (parliamentarians, enterprises and military industry) in the conduct of French policy towards South Africa
