Abstract:

Austria's status of neutrality contended with crises almost immediately after its founding along with the 1955 State Treaty. First, during the Soviet invasion of Hungary in October 1956, Austrian neutrality faced the threat of conflict when Soviet-Hungarian clashes spilled over into Austria. Then, in July 1958, Austrian neutrality contended with more benign, but nonetheless disturbing, provocations from the Cold War's Western superpower, the United States. As U.S. military planes transited Austria in broad daylight on their way to Lebanon, the cozy, covert Austro-American relationship became all too overt. Although many Austrians believed neutrality would end foreign (particularly Soviet) domination and would ensure an ultimate withdrawal from global upheavals, these events showed that neutrality by itself could not remove the strategic implications inherent in Austria's position in Cold War Central Europe. Indeed, partisan strategic calculations in both East and West had played a significant role in creating Austrian neutrality. As a result, preserving both Austria's neutrality and its links to the West required delicate maneuvering by a small, poorly defended country amid Cold War crosscurrents of Eastern threats and Western sympathies. Already in its early years, Austrian neutrality proved to be less of the holiday from history that many Austrians expected during the festive mood of May 1955.

تناول البحث سياسة المملكة العربية السعودية تجاه التطورات السياسية في العراق 1955-1958 والتركيز على موقف المملكة العربية السعودية من حلف بغداد عام 1955 وثورة 14 تموز عام 1958، إذ اتسمت مواقف المملكة العربية السعودية من العراق بروح الشك والتخوف في علاقتها مع العراق منذ تأسيس المملكة العراقية عام 1921 بقيادة الملك الهاشمي فيصل الأول بن الشريف حسين بن علي الذي دخل في صراع طويل مع آل سعود الذين بسطوا سيطرتهم على الحجاز عام 1925 وأنهوا حكم العائلة الهاشمية فيها والسيطرة على شبه الجزيرة العربية كافة. شَكَّلَ حلف بغداد الذي تأسس في 24 شباط 1955 بين العراق وتركيا وانضمت إليه في تشرين الثاني 1955 كلٌ من بريطانيا وباكستان وإيران تأثيراً واضحاً في سياسة المملكة العربية السعودية التي أعلنت رفضها وشجبها لسياسة الأحلاف، وقامت بحملة أمام الرأي العام العربي خوفاً من استغلال حكام العراق الهاشميين ذلك الحلف وسيلةً لاسترجاع ما فقدوه على يد آل سعود الحجاز عام 1925.

La transición de territorios nacionales a provincias, iniciada durante el peronismo histórico (1946-1955), se analiza a partir de un enfoque histórico-sociológico que privilegia las continuidades y rupturas de la transición, tomando como estudio de caso los territorios de provincialización tardía (1955): Formosa y las gobernaciones patagónicas. Desde un enfoque basado en la sociología figuracional (Elias) y en la caracterización tridimensional del poder (Lukes) proponemos una periodización que da cuenta de las complejidades que atraviesa un proceso iniciado en un gobierno democrático ‒el peronismo histórico‒ pero que se desarrolla en el marco de la desperonización, proscripción y control estatal desplegados por la autodenominada “Revolución Libertadora”. La gestación de las nuevas provincias resultó condicionada por la orientación impresa por el gobierno de facto, así como también por las difcultades institucionales y funcionales evidenciadas en las demandas de los interventores federales. Relaciones de poder asimétricas, objetivos divergentes y pretensión de homogeneización que desconoce tanto las peculiaridades regionales como las identidades locales, constituyen las variables de un proceso histórico de construcción provincial diferenciado y cuyo legado sobre la conformación socio-política de las nuevas provincias requiere aún ser debatido e interpretado.

Ugotovil sem, da je najbolj znana planinska fotografija Rosalind Franklin nastala v Julijskih Alpah verjetno leta 1952 in ne na Norveškem konec 30-tih let, kot je veljalo doslej. Na Triglav pa se je vzpela julija 1954 ali septembra 1955 in ne leta 1952, kot piše v njeni biografiji.

Infante Santo was idealized as a modern way of living in a modern avenue, within the existing city. This comprehensive project of city architecture, coordinated by the architect Alberto Pessoa (1919–1985) and built during the 1950s, embodies a site-specific attitude of cultural and urban continuity. During its planning and construction, this major urban project was first exhibited in Lisbon, in 1951, and then in Rome, 1955, London, 1956, Washington, 1958, Brussels, 1958, and also published in the French magazine L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui, in 1960. Today, the absence of a strategy for approaching Infante Santo as a whole is compromising its adaptation for the future.

Abstract:

This article deals with Austria during the first phase of détente from 1953 to 1958, a period in which the country was still formally under Four-Power control. The article recounts and analyzes the conclusion of the Austrian State Treaty (and Austria's accompanying declaration of neutrality) in 1955 and the positions taken by Austria during the crises in East Germany in 1953, Hungary in 1956, and Lebanon in 1958. Austria's neutrality was spurred not so much by the Cold War as by the East-West “thaw” after Stalin's death. Neutrality helped usher in a remarkably successful period of national self-assertion that facilitated Austria's efforts at nation building.

Mazocraeoides georgei price, 1936 and mazocraeoides opisthonema Hargis, 1955 are reported for the first time in Brazil in Brevoortia aurea (Spix, 1829) and in Harengula clupeola (Cuvier, 1829) respectively, clupeid fishes from the littoral of Rio de janeiro State, which represent new host records. Mazocraeoides olentangiensis Sroufe, 1958 and mazocraeoides hargisi Price, 1961 are considered new synonyms for Mazocraeoides georgei.

Abstract:

Khrushchev’s foreign policy (1953–1964) that characterized by the strategy of “balancing on the edge” is usually recognized as erroneous. Immediately after Stalin’s death, his successors initially feared a nuclear attack from the United States, which their own Air Force and Air Defense were unable to repel or to retaliate. Therefore, in 1954–1955, the Soviet leader attempted to create a buffer zone of neutral states along the perimeter of the USSR’s borders: he stopped the Korean War, proposed the mutual withdrawal of troops from Europe, etc. After the 1955 Geneva Conference, Khrushchev began to act more courageously, because he saw that the U.S. were afraid of the USSR too and didn’t want to attack it first. Trying to use the opportunities of the European colonial empires’ disintegration, the USSR provided to the newly independent states in Asia and Africa a large-scale economic, military, technical, and political support, and first of all, to Egypt and Indonesia, which controlled the Suez Canal and the Strait of Malacca – key areas on the sea route from Europe to the Far East. The negotiations between Mao Tse Tung and Khrushchev in 1957–1958 reveals their intention to shake up the military blocs created by the Americans near the borders of the socialist camp (NATO, SEATO, the Baghdad Pact). The Soviet leader initiated a series of political crises as interconnected stages of geopolitical offensive against the US position: the Suez (1956), the Syrian (1957), the Middle East (1958), the 2nd Berlin (1958), the Caribbean (1962), etc., which brought the USSR to the brink of war.

Abstract:

Na mostu čez reko Muro v Gornji Radgoni je bil 2. avgusta 1955 ustreljen miličnik Alojz Bartol. Osumljenec je zbežal čez državno mejo v Avstrijo, kjer je bil prijet in naslednji dan odpeljan z vlakom proti Gradcu a je orožnikoma pobegnil in se vrnil čez Prekmurje domov. Skrival se je ter vlamljal v trgovine kmetijskih zadrug, kmetij, gostiln in KLO (krajevni ljudski odbor) na širšem območju Slovenskih goric, Podravja, Haloz, Kozjanskem in celo na sosednjem Hrvaškem. Spretno se je izmikal organom pregona s pomočjo sodelavcev in sorodnikov, vse do0 1. marca 1958 ko je bil aretiran na seniku svoje stare matere v Očeslavcih. Na sodnem procesu v Mariboru (december 1958 - april 1959) mu je obtožnica očitala 84 kaznivih dejanj, a so mu jih dokazali le 45. Bil je obsojen na smrt z ustrelitvijo. Po pritožbah na Vrhovno sodišče LRS in na Vrhovno sodišče FLRJ ter po zavrnitvi prošnje za pomilostitev je bil ustreljen 30. oktobra 1959. O Francu Rihtariču še danes živi med ljudmi veliko zgodb, anekdot in postal je mit, imenovan tudi Štajerski Robin Hood.

Analiza la respuesta de los grupos políticos y sindicales al golpe de Estado que dio lugar a la formación de la "Resistencia Peronista", que enfrentó prohibiciones y persecuciones. Estudia la cultura de la resistencia y concluye que un imaginario colectivo tradicionalista se convirtió en un movimiento dinámico, opuesto a las clases dominantes.</p>

Twenty-two years ago the Historisches Jahrbuch published a review of recent studies of John of Salisbury. It was signed by H. Hohenleutner (1958) and it surveyed work done between 1948 and 1958. In that immediately post-war period there had appeared Daniel McGarry’s most useful translation into English of the Metalogicon (1955); Christopher Brooke had brought to completion an edition and translation of the early Letters of John of Salisbury covering the years 1153-61, and Marjope Chibnall had edited and translated with great success the Historia Pontificalis (1956). There had also appeared, apart from a number of short articles and chapters, Hans Liebeschütz’s book on John of Salisbury and medieval humanism and Helbling-Gloor’s study of John’s ideas concerning nature and superstition (1956).

En 1955 se produjo un nuevo quiebre institucional en Argentina, que provocó el final del llamado “peronismo histórico” (1946-1955). A partir de entonces, la autodenominada Revolución Libertadora (1955-1958) quedó asociada indisolublemente a la exclusión política mediante la proscripción electoral del partido justicialista, sus ex funcionarios y el líder mismo. En la Patagonia la Dictadura Militar puso entre paréntesis la creación de nuevas provincias dispuesta por el peronismo. Al igual que en el resto de las provincias, el gobierno de facto ordenó la adopción de medidas tendientes a perseguir, investigar y juzgar las actividades del partido peronista y de sus principales funcionarios en el marco del proceso de desperonización impulsado desde el gobierno de facto. En ese sentido la acción de las comisiones y sub comisiones Investigadoras provinciales se materializó en una multiplicidad de denuncias, detenciones y cesantías que demuestran la trama del poder anudada en los ex territorios nacionales del sur, con una sociedad movilizada que colaboró activamente con la intervención federal como parte del aval al pacto proscriptivo, evidenciando la escasa valencia del concepto democracia como rasgo dominante.

Abstract:

The early career of Herbert Blankenhorn (1904–1991) illustrates important trends in the transition from Nazi Germany to the Federal Republic. During the 1930s and 1940s he served as a diplomat in the German Foreign Office and also joined the Nazi Party in 1938. After 1945 he would play a very public role in the creation of a new political culture in West Germany. Konrad Adenauer thought that the exceptional political sense of his young personal assistant, who also served as Secretary General of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the British Zone, helped him become chancellor of the Federal Republic in 1949. Through the mid-1950s Blankenhorn remained one of Adenauer's most intimate advisors, especially on matters concerning foreign policy. From late 1949 to mid-1950, he also oversaw the creation of what became the West German Auswärtiges Amt (Foreign Office), and thereafter he was the head of its Political Division and deputy to State Secretary Walter Hallstein until 1955. He went on to serve as West German ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) (1955–1958), France (1958–1963), Italy (1963–1965), and the United Kingdom (1965–1970). After retiring from the diplomatic service in 1970, Blankenhorn functioned as the West German representative in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Executive Council until 1976.

Abstract As the managing and artistic director of Warsaw Philharmonic in 1955-58, Bohdan Wodiczko introduced an innovative programming policy which re-oriented the Philharmonic’s repertoire toward 20th-century classics and focused on the links between new music and that of other historical periods. The aim was to create a vast sonosphere of a “musical inter-age” (S. Kisielewski after M. Wańkowicz) encompassing radically different styles and genres and significantly transforming the axiology of the musical art. Wodiczko’s novel programming, though largely concentrating on the already waning neo-Classicism, laid the foundations for the phenomenon of the Warsaw Autumn and was a harbinger of the political-cultural thaw that would come after October 1956. This paper examines Wodiczko’s programming revolution in its political context, as well as the critical reception of Warsaw Philharmonic concerts, with particular emphasis on the aesthetic disputes arising around those composers whose works provoked the greatest controversies: Igor Stravinsky and Carl Orff.

ABSTRACTWhen the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1955–1958 advance party sailed from the Millwall Docks in November 1955, bound for the Weddell Sea, their departure was the product of five years of intensive effort on the part of Vivian Fuchs to achieve the first overland crossing of the Antarctic continent. This paper investigates the many obstacles that had to be overcome leading up to Theron sailing and explains the manner in which they were overcome by the Fuchs-Wordie-Clifford triumvirate. The British Foreign Office was particularly opposed to the expedition with the office's focus on sovereignty rather than science while an alternative proposal from Duncan Carse raised a unique set of difficulties. The withdrawal from involvement by the Scott Polar Research Institute Director, Colin Bertram, indicated further disaffection. Most important, if political and financial goals were to be met, was the need for participation by several Commonwealth countries of which New Zealand was the essential partner. Fortunately, the vigorous efforts of a few Antarctic enthusiasts in New Zealand were successful in moving their government to assert its long dormant position in the Ross Dependency. New Zealand's commitment turned the tide of commonwealth apathy towards the TAE. Although the TAE preceded the IGY, events, including the dominating IGY presence of the United States, caused the two projects to become tightly interwoven. For these reasons the years leading up to the departure of Theron were as intriguing as the crossing journey itself.

The new genus and species of edaphic Entiminae Caldarinus gwarrie gen. n., sp. n., is described from South Africa: Western Cape province. Its tribal placement in the subfamily is discussed and the most important taxonomic characters are illustrated. The genus Rhysoderes Marshall, 1955 (Entiminae: oosomini) is proposed as a new junior synonym of Cladeyterus Schoenherr, 1842 and Rhysoderes atrobruneus Marshall, 1958 is proposed as a new junior synonym of Cladeyterus lepidopterus Boheman, 1842. The remaining nine Rhysoderes species are transferred to the genus Cladeyterus.

El presente artículo busca explicar los Estadios del Isótopo de Carbono o CIS (Salcedo 2011) a partir de las variaciones seculares del Carbono–14 atmosférico. Tal propuesta se basa en un fenómeno advertido por el autor en 1997, al calibrar series de fechados que resultaban en conglomerados generados por la ‘topografía’ de las curvas de calibración radiocarbónica. Los estadios temporales resultantes concuerdan con las variaciones cíclicas de mediano plazo en la actividad solar, registradas por diversas disciplinas científicas a mediados del siglo XX (De Vries 1958; Dewey 1960; Link 1955; Schove 1955; Suess 1961), donde los grandes mínimos solares marcan el final de cada estadío. Esta aproximación alternativa a la cronología es aplicable a la Arqueología así como otras disciplinas del Cuaternario, permitiendo contrastar la contemporaneidad regional e interregional en un contexto natural, en lugar de cultural, liberando al arqueólogo de las particularidades cronológicas de las tradicionales secuencias culturales locales.

Abstract:

Characiosiphon belongs to the order Chlorococcales of the class Chlorophyceae. It was reported for the first time from India in 1936 by M. O. P. Iyengar who collected it from a stream situated near Tiruchirapalli (Tamilnadu). Later this green alga was reported from various parts of the country i. e. Gwalior (Agarkar, 1953), Tirupati (Rao, 1954), Jodhpur (Bhandari, 1955) and Idore (Sharma, 1958). The thallus of this algae shows wide variations with respect to i ts length, width and the number and shape of protoplasts. The material collected from Banihar dam of West Nimar of Madhya Pradesh shows much resembalance with that of C. rivularis Iyengar accept that it possesses larger dimensions. The abnormalities described by Bhandari (1955) in C. rivularis has not been observed in the present material. The occurrence of Characiosiphon is a new report from west Nimar district of Madhya Pradesh.

Alojzy Oborny (1933–2022) was an art historian (MA 1955), assistant at the Pszczyna Castle Museum (1955– 1958), Head of the Raciborz Museum (1958–1961), a longstanding director of the Świętokrzyskie Museum, as of 1975 Director of the National Museum in Kielce (1961–1987, 1990– 2002), Deputy Director for Research at the National Museum in Krakow (1987–1990). A co-organizer and honorary member of the Kielce Branch of the Polish Art Historian Association, he was a long-standing member of the Council for Museums at the Ministry of Culture, as well as the president and a member of museum councils. He co-founded the Rotary Club in Kielce of which he was a member. As an art disseminator, he cooperated with Kielce dailies and cultural periodicals, as well as with the Kielce Radio. It was thanks to his efforts that the Former Palace of Cracow Bishops in Kielce was allocated to the Świętokrzyskie Museum (1971) which he subsequently raised to the dignity of the National Museum (1975). An active organizer of museum life, from the 1970s he initiated and co-organized an international cultural exchange, locating the Kielce museum collection and the offer of the Kielce Museum within the realm of Europeans culture. An expert in Polish painting, he created the Gallery of Polish Painting of the National Museum in Kielce. Oborny authored and co-authored museum exhibitions as well as several dozen publications and books on art, particularly Polish painting.

En el siguiente escrito me propongo analizar algunas dimensiones concernientes al problema de la evolución del Estado en la Argentina entre los años 1943 y 1958, con el fin de poner en evidencia la emergencia de una matriz estatal de carácter racista en la tramitación de las diferencias políticas. El trabajo consta de cuatro partes. En la primera, procuraré mostrar el surgimiento de la cuestión de las poblaciones y la gestión de lo masivo como preocupación central del Estado entre los años 1943 y 1945. En la segunda, intentaré analizar las concepciones acerca del Estado y la nación entre los años 1945 y 1955. En la tercera, analizaré algunos elementos del proyecto “des-peronizador” de la dictadura instalada en 1955 y los distintos mecanismos institucionales que se implementaron desde el Estado para soterrar de manera definitiva a la identidad peronista. Finalmente, a partir del entrecruzamiento de diversos aportes teóricos, intentaré llegar a algunas conclusiones tendientes a poner en evidencia la emergencia histórica de una forma de racismo de Estado en el país.

The synonymy of Ch. taeniopus gotlandica Holmgern, 1887 with Ch. pumilionis (Bjerkander, 1778) is confirmed. Sir Herbert Butterfield, Master of Peterhouse, Cambridge (1955–68), Regius Professor of History (1963–68), and author of The Whig Interpretation of History (1931), was one of the leading historians of the twentieth century. A diplomatic historian and student of modern historiography, Butterfield was deeply concerned too with contemporary international relations, wrote much on the subject and, in 1958, created the ‘British Committee on the Theory of International Politics’. Drawing upon published and unpublished material, this article seeks to sketch an outline of Butterfield's career and thought, to examine his approach to international relations, and to reconsider his reputation in the field.

A partir de las novelas Cayó sobre su rostro (1955) y Los dueños de la tierra (1958) de David Viñas, este trabajo indaga en una configuración correlativa entre la conquista del territorio patagónico y la imposición de una modalidad familiar, sexual y racial específica. Las dos narraciones trazan una relación necesaria entre la apropiación violenta de la tierra y los ordenamientos biopolíticos que emergen de este proceso. De este modo, Viñas interviene en el debate político cultural de fines la década de 1950 poniendo en discusión la legitimidad de un proyecto de país que se desmoronó con el peronismo.
