Abstract:
What idea of didactics is conveyed to schools by teacher's guides? What features should the ideal teacher's guide have? These are the fundamental questions driving this whole work; born from the need to ponder, once again, on the world of didactics itself, in relation with Educational Science. Said connection will be looked for, and judged, in the factual dimension of the Italian school, through the analysis of teacher's guides for primary school, published starting from 1939, focusing on the period between 1955 and 2011. The “teacher's guide” tool was chosen due to it being a daily witness of the changes which the teaching-learning strategies have undergone during the various historical and cultural cycles of the Italian school. Such tool is considered in a twofold way: as a reflection of both the historical changes of didactics in the school and the evolution or involution by which it is concerned; and of the idea of didactics actually reaching the schools, idea emerging from said devices. The work starts off with the definition of paradigm and model, it then focuses on the concept of didactics, from a scientific and etymological standpoint, referencing the main classical and contemporary authors; it examines the connection between school and didactics, dwelling on the concept of “educational relationship”, and it offers a consideration on disciplinary didactics. The “teacher's guide” tool is then defined and analyzed, contextualizing the various volumes from an historical and political point of view and specifying the purpose it should fulfil as a means actually useful to teachers, worthy of having a place in the educative context.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the broad continuities in the strategies that individual leaders in Africa have employed to mobilise political support across different historical periods and party systems, from the late colonial to the post-colonial era, and from single-party to multiparty systems. It examines this question through a historical biography of Michael Sata, a political leader in Zambia whose life and career, like those of several other Zambian individual politicians, cut across the main divides in the country's political history: the late-colonial period (1953-1964), the one-party state (1973-1991) and the era of multiparty democracy (since 1991). Sata's experiences also span a number of political organisations such as the United National Independence Party (from the early 1960s to 1991), the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (1991-2001) and the Patriotic Front (2001-2011). I argue that Sata employed several political strategies such as populism, clientelism, ethnic appeals and coalition building to mobilise support across these historical epochs and party institutions. The existing literature on Zambian political change has largely focused on ethnicity, which has taken attention away from the fact that most ethnic politics has had, as this thesis demonstrates, a populist component. More broadly, what this study demonstrates is the utility of historical biography in understanding political change. Examining the life of an individual whose experiences cut across supposed turning points and disruptions, or the institutions that have come and gone with them, captures not only change but continuities too, which are generally missing in many accounts of political life in Africa, and consequently allows us to gain new and unique insights.

Abstract:
The study consists of a psychobiography of the American entrepreneur and innovative co-founder of Apple Computers, Steven Paul Jobs (1955 – 2011). The psychobiographical research method qualitatively considers the lived life of an individual in an attempt to understand the psychological development in the context of applied psychological theory. A theoretical integration of Adler‘s Individual Psychology and Antonovsky‘s Sense of Coherence was utilized in the present study. This integrative approach facilitated a dynamic and holistic picture of the individual‘s functioning in illuminating not only personality but also the individual‘s social context, choice making capacity, general resistance resources and the individual‘s ‗meaning making‘ capacity in the strive towards health and superiority. Steven Paul Jobs revolutionised personal computing. Ranked as Forbes‘ seventeenth most powerful person and Man of the Year by The Financial Times in 2010, Jobs‘ contribution to modern technology is widely acknowledged and revered. To ensure the accurate description of the lived life of Steven Paul Jobs, extensive data was examined by utilizing Alexander‘s model of identifying salient themes. The study considered the nature and methodology of psychobiography, the theories of Alfred Adler and Aaron Antonovsky and the life of Steven Paul Jobs that resulted in an integrated psychological description of the subject. The findings of this study indicate that Steven Paul Jobs‘ unique context (environment and constitutional attributes) was valuable in light of the theoretical frameworks that the present study is grounded upon as it illustrated an individual‘s self-determination and capacity to exercise choice in response to life challenges. The study highlighted that the individual is not necessarily a passive bystander to his life events but rather is driven by an internal forward striving. Key concepts: Aaron Antonovsky, Alfred Adler, Apple Computers, Individual Psychology, Psychobiography, Sense of Coherence, Steven Paul Jobs.

Abstract:
This dissertation relates the evolution of the formation of rural family through three periods before 1954, 1955-1986, 1987-2011 in the Red River Delta in the North of Vietnam. The theoretical cadre is referring to the work of Alain Girard, Claude Henryon and Edmond Lambrechts, François Héran and Michel Bozon, to the analysis of conditions for formation of one generation and generating reports of Karl Mannheim, to the analysis of the social transformation of Pierre Bourdieu from his book Work and workers in Algeria. The fiel survey by interview and observation was realized with spouses who had their marriage between references dates. Viêt Nam has experienced in the twentieth century big events which we refer. It crossed the feudal-colonial period, the period of socialist construction and the period of the market economy with a socialist orientation. Starting from political, economic, legal, educational, and demographic contexts of the country, through empirical data on the subject and survey results, we try to identify the main characteristics of the marriage of each period and the social mechanisms which determine the choice of spouse by examining the main aspects of the entry process in union: circumstances of meeting, conditions of courting, marriage decision-making, criteria for selecting, and marriage rituals. All of this aims at understanding the continuities and changes of this evolution. We observe that the geographical distance becomes more marked between the municipalities of origin of the spouses. The contexts of courting are more and more marked by the existence of the social networks and by the system of the education and training. The youth autonomy is affirmed. We find concordances between survey results and sociodemographic data recently observed in Viêt Nam

Ndoro, Tinashe T. R. "The personality of an entrepreneur : a psychobiography of Steve Jobs." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1013215.

Full text
Abstract:
From Integrative Summary: There has been a growing interest in successful entrepreneurs. Research on entrepreneurship has focused on the identification of personality variables that would assist in the prediction of entrepreneurial success. The present study moves away from attempting to predict entrepreneurial success and instead focuses on exploring and describing the personality of a successful entrepreneur. A psychobiographical case study was adopted by the researcher to explore and describe the extent to which Steve Jobs demonstrated the entrepreneurial characteristics identified by Rauch and Frese (2007). A personality trait approach to entrepreneurship was adopted in the study. The study also attempted to explore the socio-cultural and economic context within which Jobs practised his entrepreneurial activities. Jobs was a successful entrepreneur who co-founded Apple and founded NeXT and Pixar, which were all companies that transformed various technological industries. His entrepreneurial orientation allowed him to produce innovative products that transformed society in various sectors which included personal computing, mobile phones, music, retail stores and films (Isaacson, 2011). A qualitative approach was adopted in the study. The data collection and analysis was guided by the three linked sub-processes proposed by Miles and Huberman (2002) which involved data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings of this study showed that Jobs demonstrated, at varying levels, all the entrepreneurial characteristics identified by Rauch and Frese (2007) which included a need of achievement, risk-taking, innovativeness, autonomy, locus of control and self-efficacy. The researcher however noted that the desire for autonomy, risk-taking, innovativeness and self-efficacy were the most dominant characteristics driving his entrepreneurial orientation. The research thesis adopted the structure of a teaching case which can be used to explore and discuss the personality trait perspective to entrepreneurship in a classroom setting. The findings of the study can be recognised as positively contributing to the growing field of psychobiographical research on exceptional individuals, including entrepreneurs. The study can be considered as a foundation for future studies which will add to the body of knowledge relating to entrepreneurship and personality.

Steve Jobs’ speech, that marked the launch of products made by Apple, a technology company, was eagerly anticipated by the market, fans and media. All over the world, many people line up and even set up tents in front of Apple stores on the eve of product launches, and then come out holding their package as a trophy. But what explains Apple’s phenomenon? This study is based on the assumption that Jobs is considered a sort of modern times messiah, making Apple an extension of himself, and aims to understand, within an enunciative-discursive perspective, as developed by Dominique Maingueneau, how the messiah figure is personified in Jobs and unveils a “savior” myth established around him. This investigation is also founded on the hypothesis of sacralization of technology (Noble, 1997), which considers that, by promoting the encounter between the physical and the metaphysical, technology aims at transcendence and appropriates religious ideas. As such, this study is spread across different discursive fields, such as advertising, religion and the media, aiming to understand not only the intertextuality but also the discursive ethos and set design in the conjuncture of the public appearances of Apple’s co-founder. In addition, in order to understand how Steve Jobs’ discourse got acclaimed by the world, using the religious discourse to legitimize his own speech, the notion of constituent discourses is thus mobilized. Considering the evolution in the networks of discourse genres, especially after the emergence of the internet and the widespread dissemination of technology, the study also contemplates the notion of generic valence (Maingueneau, 2015), which allows us to reflect on how discourse genres and consequently the exercise of the discourse have been transforming over time. This reflection is essential, since the analysis of this research focuses on events that happened empirically and were reproduced on YouTube, an online video sharing platform. The results show how the pre-discursive ethos was constructed with an interaction between different genres, the discursive artifices used by the enunciator in the scenography of his presentations to challenge his co-exponents, as well as the links between what Jobs demonstrated and the contents circulating about him, raising expectations of his public appearances

The outgroup is composed by four species (Castianeira aff rubicunda ACR; Xeropigo cotijuba; Septentrinna yucatan and Falconina gracilis) all of them represented by males and females. The ingroup is represented by 13 Attacobiini species, seven of which represented by both sexes (Attacobius TOC; A. attarum; A. verhaaghi; A. lamellatus; A. uiriri; A. blakei and A. carranca), three represented only by females (A. luederwaldti; A. nigripes and A. kitae) and three represented only by males (Ecitocobius comissator; Attacobius PAR and A. tucurui). Regarding to terminals, the present data matrix represent an increase of two species in relation to a previous analysis of the Tribe. The availability of data was improved by adding character states on genitalic features for three terminals, of which the counterpart sex was unknown at the time in which that previous analysis was made (males of A. verhaagui and females of A. blakei and A. uiriri). Furthermore, several characters used in the previous analysis were re-interpreted and some new characters were proposed. A single tree was obtained under equal weights. Attacobinni and Attacobius were retrieved as monophyletic groups but the groups of species of Attacobius depicted here are considerably different from those recognized in the previous analysis. The exact solution under equal weights and all characters running unordered resulted in a fully resolved, single most parsimonious tree. As in the previous analysis, the bettersupported clades were Attacobiini and Attacobius. However, the groups of Attacobius species recovered here are considerably different from the ones recovered previously, with the exception of an apical clade composed by A. nigripes, A. kitae, A. attarum and A. luederwaldti, which was recognized in both analyses as the best supported group within the genus.

Abstract:
AbstractAlthough Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881–1955) was thoroughly trained in philosophy and theology, he was first and foremost a paleoanthropologist, directly involved in the discovery of Homo erectus pekinensis (“Sinanthropus”) in China in the 1920s and 1930s. He came from a Catholic aristocratic background, was ordained a priest in 1911, survived World War I (as a stretcher-bearer, distinguished with the Legion of Honour), joined the Jesuit Order, conducted paleoanthropological field work during the interbellum, and became entangled in a conflict with his Jesuit superiors (over pantheism and the concept of original sin) until his death in New York (in exile more or less). When his writings were published (shortly after his death, as his superiors forbade publication during his lifetime), he quickly became an intellectual celebrity. Currently, he is credited with having anticipated Gaia theory (King, 2006), the global village concept (McLuhan, 1962), the Internet (Barlow, 1992; Cobb, 1998), the WWW (Garreau, 2005, p. 256; Greenfield, 2014, p. 9), transhumanism (Delio, 2014; Steinhart, 2008), the “global brain” (Stock, 1993), and the Anthropocene (e.g. Crutzen, 2002; Steffen et al., 2011).

Abstract:
This chapter contends that Edward Lear’s poetic composition is driven by his states of tearfulness (which he calls ‘The Morbids’). It furthers critical and theoretical studies by Eric Griffiths (1989), Susan Langer (1955), and Mutlu Blasing (2007), expands on formal readings by Isobel Armstrong and Yopie Prins (2011), and develops studies of tears by Mark Taylor (1990), Jeffrey Kottler (1996), Tom Lutz (2001), and Thomas Dixon (2015). Tracing the overlaps between tearful moments in Lear’s life and tearful rhythms in his poetry and drafts, it offers an unexpected view of the poet’s oeuvre and the rhythms of feeling contained within it.

Koppenborg, Florentine. "The “Nuclear Village”." In Japan's Nuclear Disaster and the Politics of Safety Governance. Cornell University Press, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.7591/cornell/9781501770043.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the story of half a century of stable nuclear power development, from 1955 until 2011, and identifies the mechanisms that sustained path dependence. It stresses fuzzy boundaries and conflicts among pronuclear actors in Japan, as in a real village with family feuds. The chapter argues that Japan's nuclear policy history is sometimes divided into stages with the restructuring of the nuclear power administration in the mid- to late 1970s and in the early 2000s marking turning points. It shows that these reforms only changed the makeup of the nuclear safety administration but left intact the safety governance flaws that ailed the nuclear village. Understanding such path dependence in the nuclear power domain requires a closer look at the institutions that structured it. The chapter then examines collective actors (organizations) in the nuclear power domain and the formal and informal rules (institutions) that structure their interaction to explain the emergence and persistence of safety governance institutions that ultimately led to the March 2011 nuclear disaster.

Abstract:
The entire study set out in the following pages is owed to the work and the documentation assembled by Domenico Faccenna on the Saidu Sharif I excavation in the Swat Valley.Added to the data collected by Faccenna (1963‑82) are the new data deriving from the excavations and final restoration works on the site (2011‑14). All this work, both old and new, was carried out in the context of the programmes of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Pakistan, founded in Swat in 1955 by Giuseppe Tucci as the first archaeological mission of what once was the IsMEO. Today the Mission is part of the International Association for Studies on the Mediterranean and the East (Associazione Internazionale di Studi sul Mediterraneo e l’Oriente – ISMEO), perpetuating the scientific heritage of the former Institutes IsMEO (1933‑96) and IsIAO (1996‑2011). As from 2013 the new ISMEO has incorporated the Mission as a research unit with the support of contributions by the University and Research Ministry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Since 2020‑21 the Mission has been jointly run by ISMEO together with the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.

Abstract:
The architect Álvaro Siza Vieira (1933–) was born in Porto, Portugal. He graduated from the University of Porto (now known as the Faculdade de Arquitectura, Universidade do Porto – FAUP) in 1955. While still a student in 1954 he built four houses in his home town, Matosinhos, where he opened his own private practice. Between 1955 and 1958 he collaborated with his former teacher, Fernando Távora (1923–2005). During the 1960s he designed and built a swimming pool project (Leça da Palmeira, Porto) that caught the attention of the public. He was invited to lecture at the university from 1966–69. In 1976 he returned to teaching and shortly afterwards, in 1979, the university was renamed the FAUP, following the establishment of democratic government after the end of dictatorship (1926–74) under Oliveira Salazar (1889–1970). The FAUP sought to instigate the principles of Modernism based on the architect’s individual character, i.e. not according to the prevailing Soft Portuguese style. Three individuals became identified with the new FAUP, known as the Porto School of Architecture: Távora, Siza Vieira, and one of his students, Eduardo Souto Moura (1952–; winner of the Pritzker Prize in 2011). In the new era of democracy that flourished in Portugal, in 1977 he planned 1,200 low-cost housing units in Évora, for the national housing association, the Serviço Ambulatório de Apoio Local.

Full text
Abstract:
The quantity of steel consumed can be considered as an indicator of industrial development as nations move to higher stages of industrialization, since the steel consumption has been thought to be closely linked to the rate of economic growth, which influences the level of activity in steel intensive sectors (Huh, 2011). After the World War II, the worldwide metal consumption increased rapidly and, this led to a concern about the supply of metals and a fear of early depletion (Wårell, 2014). As part of a broader effort to develop simple but accurate techniques for forecasting the future demand for metals, the International Iron and Steel Institute (1972) and Malenbaum (1973) suggested the intensity of use hypothesis during the 1970s. This hypothesis maintains that the intensity of metal use is a function of economic development as measured by real GDP (Guzmán et al. 2005). Intensity of use curve rises, peaks, and then decline as per capita income increases. For this hypothesis the intensity of metal use depends on the economic development in a country and changes over the development stages of the economy. Therefore the relationship between intensity of metal use and economic development exhibits an inverted U-shaped pattern. The main purpose of this study is to test the intensity of (steel) use hypothesis for Turkey during the period 1955-2012 using the cointegration technique with structural break. Given the dataset and time series techniques used, results indicate that the steel consumption and real GDP have the long-run relationship.

Abstract:
After more than 55 years of activities of the Nuclear Research Institute Rez (NRI) in the nuclear field, there are some obsolete nuclear facilities that shall be decommissioned. NRI is a leading institution in all areas of nuclear R&D in the Czech Republic. NRI has had a dominant position in the nuclear programme since it was established in 1955 as a state-owned research organization and it has developed to its current status. In December 1992, NRI has been transformed into a joint-stock company. The Institute’s activity encompasses nuclear physics, chemistry, nuclear power, experiments at the research reactor and many other topics. Main issues addressed in NRI in the past decades were concentrated on research, development and services provided to the nuclear power plants operating VVER reactors, development of chemical technologies for fuel cycle and irradiation services to research and development in the industrial sector, agriculture, food processing and medicine. The NRI operates two research nuclear reactors, many facilities as a hot cell facility, research laboratories, technology for radioactive waste (RAW) management, radionuclide irradiators, an electron accelerator, etc. The obsolete facilities to be decommissioned comprise various research facilities and facilities for RAW management. Decommissioning of nuclear facilities NRI is the only ongoing decommissioning project in the Czech Republic. Decommissioning started in 2003 and will be finished in 2014. Some facilities have already been successfully decommissioned.
