Abstract:

Abstract Background: The beginnings of pediatric oncology in Bydgoszcz, Poland dates back to the year 1958. The first patient was treated with prednisolone only. Objective: Analysis of results of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia therapy in Bydgoszcz region in 1958–2008. Patients and methods: A total number of 570 children were diagnosed and treated over the period of 50 years, including: 215 children treated with different drugs and combinations in 1958–1972, 49 children treated with Memphis V–VII protocols in 1976–1983, 114 children treated with ALL-BFM83 or ALL-BFM86 protocols in 1983– 1995 and 192 children treated with ALL-BFM90, New York I–II or ALL-IC-2002 between 1995–2008. Results: A number of patients with „events” in respective time periods was: 205/215 (95.3%, in 1958–1972); 44/49 (89.8%, in 1976–1983), 54/114 (47.4%, in 1983–1995), 56/192 (29.2%, in 1995–2008). The values of 5-year pEFS in consecutive therapeutic periods were: p=0.012±0.008 (1958–1972), p=0.102±0.043 (in 1976–1983), p=0.526±0.047 (in 1983–1995), p=0.700±0.037 (in 1995–2008) (p<0.0001). A median survival time was, respectively: 0.8 year (for patients treated in 1958–1972); 1.8 year (in1976–1983); 5.7 years (in 1983–1995); 7.4 years (for patients treated in 1995–2008). Conclusions: Complex therapy based on international strategy of multiagent total therapy and supportive care, has led to an improved long-term survival in childhood ALL in Bydgoszcz region, Poland, from 1% in sixties up to 70% nowadays Figure 1. pEFS in ALL with respect to time period Figure 1. pEFS in ALL with respect to time period

Abstract:

Comparisons were made of citations of research publications in six literature reviews of engineering psychology: Fitts (1958); Melton and Briggs (1960); Chapanis (1963); Poulton (1966) and Alluisi and Morgan (1976). The frequencies of literature citation were compared to those presented by O'Hare (1985) who analyzed the literature citations by Wickens and Kramer (1985). The types of literature and content reflect changes in the fields of engineering psychology and human factors from 1958 to the present day.

Dmitry S. Polyansky (1917-2001) is known as one of the CPSU and USSR leaders. The 1946 election for Venezuela's National Constituent Assembly marked the beginning of democratic electoral processes and the modern party system in that country. Although interrupted by ten years of dictatorship (1948-1958), nine national elections for president and parliament have been held since 1946. In conjunction with these elections, the Venezuelan party system has passed through four stages: a predominant party system (1945-1948), a limited multiparty system (1958-1973), an attenuated two-party system (1973-1993), and recently, the return to a limited multiparty system (1993-) (Sartori 1976).

Abstract:

The variation of the summer monsoon onset over South Asia was investigated by using long-term data of the onset over Kerala, India, during the 64-yr period from 1948 to 2011. It was found that the onset over Kerala shows variation on a multidecadal scale. In early-onset years, the sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly over the northern Pacific Ocean was very similar to the negative Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO). The stationary wave train related to the negative PDO reaches into central Asia and generates a warm anomaly, thereby intensifying the land–sea thermal contrast, which promotes summer monsoon onset over South and Southeast Asia. The correlation between the onset date over Kerala and the PDO has strengthened since 1976. Analysis of zonal wind in the upper-level troposphere for the period 1958–2002 indicates that the change in the correlation is related to the change in the wave train path. The wave train propagating from the northern Pacific Ocean to western Russia could propagate eastward more easily in 1976–2002 than in 1958–75.

This paper examines critically the formulae which are frequently used in the calculations of the grant element of loans. Given the formula derived by Beenhakker (1976), which has been expanded into a more general form, the grant element of foreign assistance received by the Sudan during the period 1958-1979 is calculated. The grant element· was found to be low, reflecting hard terms of borrowing.

Este ensaio biobibliográfico analisa a trajetória profissional do bibliotecário Abner Vicentini (23/08/1929 – 9/08/1976). Dentre vários cargos ocupados, Abner Vicentini foi presidente da Associação Paulista de Bibliotecários (1958-1961); professor de Biblioteconomia na Universidade de Brasília (1964-1971); conselheiro da Federação Internacional de Documentação; consultor da FAO para a implantação da Biblioteca Nacional da Agricultura e do Sistema Nacional de Informação e Documentação Agrícola (1975-1976). Como diretor na área de bibliotecas, Vicentini passou pela seguinte trajetória: Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (1952-1953), Centro Tecnológico da Aeronáutica (1954-1963), Universidade de Brasília (1964-1971), Ministério das Minas e Energia (1972-1975). Abner Vicentini foi ainda, um grande divulgador da Classificação Decimal Universal e editor da primeira edição brasileira do Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR-1), lançada em 1969.

Abstract:

En el presente trabajo examino el género del poema en prosa en la obra del escritor hispanomexicano Tomás Segovia. Para ello me centro en sus libros Historia y poemas (1958-1967), Anagnórisis (1964-1967), Figuras y melodías (1973-1976), Partición (1976), Cantata a solas (1983) y Orden del día (1986-1987), en donde el poema en prosa aparece como parte fundamental de la estructura compositiva de cada uno de ellos. Este género le sirve al poeta para presentar tanto la experiencia interior, como para describir la realidad circundante, pero también como estructura narrativa. Por otra parte, analizo algunos ejemplos de minificciones que se incluyen en sus libros de relatos. Mi propósito es mostrar la porosidad de los límites entre el poema en prosa y otras tipologías textuales en la obra segoviana.

In recent years there has been a steady stream of literature proclaiming the decline of the American party system (Burnham, 1976; Kirkpatrick, 1978; Ladd, 1982; Crotty, 1984, 1985; Konda and Sigelman, 1987). It is argued that the parties have been losing their “ relevance,” their critical capacity in responding to social needs and problems (Eldersveld, 1982; Miller and Wattenberg, 1983). This allegation entails serious ramifications as political parties have long been viewed as performing many vital functions in the American political system (Leiserson, 1958; Sorauf, 1984).

Abstract:

Zerconid mites are an important component of the fauna of soil habitats in the Northern Hemisphere. A total of 20 genera of Zerconidae is known from North America, but only eight species of the genus Zercon C.L. Koch, 1836 have been recorded there (Sellnick 1958; Halašková 1969, 1977; Błaszak 1976, 1980, 1981a, 1981b, 1982, 1984, 1995). A further species is described in this paper. It was found in material from the USA received through the courtesy of Prof. Dr. Jan Rafalski (Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland).

Abstract:

A nematological survey was conducted in three hilly districts – Bhaktapur, Kavre and Dhading surrounding capital city of Nepal ranging the altitudes between 1340m to 1540m. Randomly collected soil samples from vegetable fields processed through Cobb’s sieving and decantation method yielded various tylenchid nematodes. Among six species of criconematid nematodes found associated with vegetable crops, four species viz. Hemicriconemoides mangiferae Siddiqi, 1961, Criconemoides brevistylus Singh and Khera, 1976, Discocriconemella retroversa Sauer and Winoto, 1975 and Hemicycliophora arenaria Raski, 1958 are described here with their morphometric data along with localities and host plants and illustrated with photomicrographs.

The Cod Wars, three militarized interstate disputes between the UK and Iceland (1958–1961, 1972–1973, 1975–1976), have often been presented as an egregious exception to the liberal peace. There are, however, few comprehensive analyses of the liberal dimensions of the Cod Wars. This article comprehensively analyses the ways in which each of the Cod Wars is consistent or inconsistent with the liberal peace. I find that while the supposedly pacifying factors of the liberal peace – democracy, trade and institutional ties – effectively made the disputes more contentious, they also ensured that escalation to actual war was impossible.

Abstract:

Parece-nos necessário um exercício de aproximação ao aspecto cênico da obra de Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão a partir da manifestação de uma crença no caráter performático da voz poética, traço percebido tanto em produções pertencentes ao universo teatral quanto em seus poemas. Nesta incursão à qual nos lançamos, a relação entre poesia e teatro ou poesia e drama é tomada a partir da leitura da estrutura de uma “recitação poética” incluída no livro de estreia da autora, Em cada pedra um voo imóvel (1958), intitulada “Luar e sal”. Neste primeiro momento de sua escrita, o que vemos é a aposta num “teatro da voz” – como Jorge Fernandes caracterizará a sua poesia em Cenas vivas (2000) –, promovido pelo minimalismo do gesto e pela redução do espaço cênico ao eco das falas dos diversos personagens. Dessa forma, no livro de 1958, a "ceno-grafia" se mostra uma primeira maneira de alçar o poema à qualidade de lugar, como apontará Eduardo Prado Coelho, quando sugere que “Poesia 61” formulará uma “concepção topológica do texto como lugar onde o sentido se produz” (1976, p. 265).

Comparamos três momentos paradigmáticos em Fronteira (1935), primeiro romance de Cornélio Penna (1896-1958). Maria Santa, a protagonista, e o narrador observam uma caixa de tampo de vidro contendo pequenos animais espetados por alfinetes. <p>Entre 1958 y 1976 la idea de incidir sobre la riqueza terrateniente –en particular la de las Pampas– a través del sistema impositivo ganó en el debate público argentino (y en particular entre aquellos encargados de diseñar las políticas del gobierno nacional) una intensidad que no había conocido desde comienzos del siglo xx. Los problemas fiscales del tesoro nacional y la percepción generalizada de que el sector agrario argentino se había estancado, lo que obstaculizaba el avance del desarrollo industrial, fueron las dos principales fuentes que impulsaron ese debate y los intentos reformistas. Además, como se verá, los intentos de reformar la imposición sobre la tierra causaron graves conflictos entre los propietarios rurales y el Estado. El fracaso de los intentos de reforma, como consecuencia de esos conflictos, moldeó el sistema impositivo argentino en el largo plazo.</p>

Summary The notion ‘delocutive derivation’ was introduced by Emile Benveniste (1902–1976) in a paper published in 1958. It appears to have gone unnoticed at the time. However, when the article was reissued in Benveniste’s Problèmes de linguistique générale (1966), things seem to have changed dramatically, in particular in 1972, when Ducrot made a connection between ‘delocutivity’ and ‘performativity’ (e.g., promettre = dire je promets), leading in 1975 delocutivity back to the side of a semantic reinterpretation (e.g., je trouve que). Subsequently, Cornulier (1976) introduced the concept of ‘autodelocutivity’ and Anscombre, in a series of articles from the late 1970s and early 1980s, attempted a theorization of this notion. Since then, the subject fell into oblivion. The object of the present paper is twofold: (1) It tries to understand the cometic rise of a notion on the linguistic horizon; (2) to demonstrate that notion ‘delocutive derivation’ is a fundamental mechanism that linguistics, both synchronic and diachronic, would make a mistake in ignoring, to the effect that its ‘enunciative’ specificity does not mask a much more general mechanism, namely, that of natural metalanguage, and beyond, that of metonymy.

Many authors and researchers have commented about the role of courts, both federal and state, as public policy makers (Dahl, 1958; Grossman and Wells, 1966 and 1980; Shubert, 1974; Horowitz, 1977; Jacob, 1983). Others have studied the process of implementing judicial decisions and their effect upon public policy and other political institutions (Wasby, 1970; Baum, 1976, 1977, and 1985; Tarr, 1977; Johnson and Canon, 1984). Public policy analysts have shown that the longrecognized uncertainties in public policy-making frequently result in unintended consequences (Lindblom, 1968). Such unintended results are even more likely in the judicial decision-making setting, given the questioned authority and ability of courts to make policy, the lack of sufficient enforcement mechanisms, and the diverse nature of the implementing populations (Johnson and Canon, 1984).

With the death of Joonas Kokkonen in October of 1996, Finland lost one of its most important post-World War II composers. Almost certainly, Kokkonen is most widely known outside Finland for his 1975 opera Viimeiset kiusaukset (Tlie Last Temptations). Yet his orchestral compositions such as the Cello Concerto (1969), the song cycle Lintuijen Tuonela (The Hades of the Birds, 1958–59), the Requiem (1981), the chamberorchestra work …Durch einen Spiegel… 1977), or such chamber works as the Piano Quintet (1953) or the String Quartets Nos.l (1959) and 3 (1976) demonstrate that masterpieces may be found in virtually every genre of Kokkonen's output. (Oddly, piano music represents a small and minor position in Kokkonen's oeuvre – a surprising fact given his accomplishments as a pianist.)

Between 1950 and 1966, about 60,000 overseas Chinese youth, officially known as qiaosheng, entered the People’s Republic of China (prc) as students and refugees from Southeast Asia. In the state archival record, qiaosheng appeared collectively “disobedient” to socialism, first cast as “capitalist” during the Great Leap Forward (1958-60) and later as a “two-faced” threat during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). Not to be taken as face value, their supposed “disobedience” illustrated the broad and complex challenges that the diaspora posed to Mao’s China. Even as the Party-state valued the mobilization of overseas Chinese resources, a combination of massive inflows of refugees from abroad and radical transformation at home produced many conflicts over qiaosheng across the 1950s and 1960s. Thus, the narrative of “disobedience” revealed not only an unstable relationship between China and the diaspora, but also how the diaspora functioned as a key site whereby differences between socialism and capitalism were worked out.

In broad outline, the traditional picture for the formation of the Milky Way can be summarized as follows. The proto-galaxy consisted of a slowly rotating cloud of metal-free gas that cooled by bremsstrahlung and recombination radiation. As the internal pressure of the gas decreased, it collapsed in stages with smaller dimensions, faster rotation velocities and flatter shapes until it reached centrifugal support in a fundamental plane. At the same time, the gas was progressively depleted by the formation of stars and enriched with heavy elements by the ejecta from previous generations. The result is a general correlation between the kinematic properties, chemical compositions and relative ages of the stellar populations within the Galaxy. This picture was formulated at the Vatican symposium by Oort (1958) and others and was elaborated by Eggen, Lynden-Bell & Sandage (1962), Sandage, Freeman & Stokes (1970), Gott & Thuan (1976), Larson (1976) and others. Much of the recent work on galaxy formation has been an attempt to extend these ideas to a more comprehensive picture that includes large quantities of dark matter. The purpose of this article is to review several topics concerning the collapse phase in the evolution of the Milky Way.

The National Ocean Service (NOS) is responsible for charting the Nation's coastal waters and, therefore, is the lead Agency for the portrayal of maritime limits of the United States of America. The 1958 Geneva Convention on the Territorial Sea and the Contiguous Zone states " ... the normal baseline for measuring the breadth of the territorial sea is the low waterline along the coast as marked on large-scale charts officially recognized by the coastal state." In 1976, NOS was requested to show various maritime limits on its regular issue of nautical charts. The paper presents the history of maritime boundaries on National Ocean Service (NOS) charts, methods used in constructing the various maritime limits, the definition of the limits, the push for lateral seaward boundaries, and the technical aspects of maritime limits.

On January 20, 1919, Columbia University decided to introduce the Contemporary Civilization course. This new academic program became over time one of the most successful in the American education. The purpose of the course was to understand the world’s problems and their solutions. Only a cultivated student can develop a deep understanding of himself and society, and the ability to make his or her own judgments. The project was inspired by John Erskine’s (1879-1951) the moral obligation to be intelligent. Daniel Cosío Villegas (1898-1976) promoted the introduction of the Contemporary Civilization course in Mexico in the new curriculum (1958) of the Faculty of Economics of Nuevo León. In this research we explore the historical circumstances of this course and the challenges faced by Consuelo Meyer L’Epée (1918-2010) in its implementation.

A partir del análisis de Ideas sobre la Libertad, la revista del Centro de Estudios sobre la Libertad creado a instancias de Alberto Benegas Lynch, el artículo muestra el papel que, desde ese espacio, se atribuyó a dicha publicación en el marco de la “batalla por las ideas”, explora las vinculaciones transnacionales que el mismo mantuvo con think-tanks e intelectuales que defendían el libre mercado, y reconstruye la significación que dio a la “reactivación” del liberalismo entre 1958 y 1976. Considerando esos tres ejes se argumenta que Ideas sobre la Libertad apuntaba a la educación de las elites mediante la crítica del colectivismo, la difusión y el comentario de la “tradición liberal argentina”. Asimismo se sostiene que el posicionamiento de aquella institución respecto del proyecto neoliberal era ambiguo, puesto que desde la revista se confrontaron las ideas “colectivistas” pero no se puso en discusión el rol del Estado.

Abstract:

The RB reactor is a uranium fuel heavy water moderated critical assembly that has been put and kept in operation by the VTNCA Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro, since April 1958. The first complete Safety Analysis Report of the RB reactor was prepared in 1961/62 yet, the first accident analysis had been made in late 1958 with the aim to examine a power transition and the total equivalent doses received by the staff during the reactivity accident that occurred on October 15, 1958. Since 1960, the RB reactor has been modified a few times. Beside the initial natural uranium metal fuel rods, new types of fuel (TVR-S types of Russian origin) consisting of 2% enriched uranium metal and 80% enriched UO2 dispersed in aluminum matrix, have been available since 1962 and 1976 respectively. Modifications of the control and safety systems of the reactor were made occasionally. Special reactor cores were designed and constructed using all three types of fuel elements as well as the coupled fast-thermal ones. The Nuclear Safety Committee of the VINCA Institute, an independent regulatory body, approved for usage all these modifications of the RB reactor on the basis of the Preliminary Safety Analysis Reports, which, beside proposed technical modifications and new regulation rules, included safety analyses of various possible accidents. A special attention was given (and a new safety methodology was proposed) to thorough analyses of the design-based accidents related to the coupled fast-thermal cores that included central zones of the reactor filled by the fuel elements without any moderator. In this paper, an overview of some accidents, methodologies and computation tools used for the accident analyses of the RB reactor is given.

Background: Many modern pharmaceutical products were launched during 1950–1980, as reflected in advertisements in the British Medical Journal ( BMJ). One of the first therapeutic areas to benefit from novel effective medications was psychiatry. Methods: We examined BMJ advertising material between 1950 and 1980, including every other issue over six-month periods (October–March) in 1950/1951, 1955/1956, 1957/1958, 1960/1961, 1962/1963, 1965/1966, 1967/1968, 1970/1971, 1972/1973, 1975/1976, 1980/1981. We recorded numbers of adverts for all pharmaceutical products and for psychiatric drugs; we also recorded trade names, generic names and marketing company. Results: Advertising in BMJ peaked in the 1960s and declined markedly in the 1970s. Adverts for psychiatric drugs as a percentage of total pharmaceutical product advertising was broadly similar during 1955–1980, but with peaks in 1960/1961, 1970/1971 and 1975/1976, reflecting the entry of several novel compounds into the market. The peak marketing of antipsychotic drugs, sedatives and anxiolytic drugs was in 1960 and of antidepressants 1970. The time course of the rise of tricyclics and the switch from barbiturates to benzodiazepines can be seen. Drugs for psychiatry rose from ninth (1955/1956) to fourth (1975/1976) in terms of the number of products in the top 10 therapeutic areas. There is no evidence that they were advertised more aggressively (number of adverts/number of products). Conclusions: The birth of modern psychopharmacology is reflected in th e advertising of psychiatric drugs in BMJ. Many drugs currently used, or their closely related successors, were launched in the early to mid-1960s. This rise in modern pharmaceuticals preceded several other major therapeutic areas.

The early career of Herbert Blankenhorn (1904–1991) illustrates important trends in the transition from Nazi Germany to the Federal Republic. During the 1930s and 1940s he served as a diplomat in the German Foreign Office and also joined the Nazi Party in 1938. After 1945 he would play a very public role in the creation of a new political culture in West Germany. Konrad Adenauer thought that the exceptional political sense of his young personal assistant, who also served as Secretary General of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the British Zone, helped him become chancellor of the Federal Republic in 1949. Through the mid-1950s Blankenhorn remained one of Adenauer's most intimate advisors, especially on matters concerning foreign policy. From late 1949 to mid-1950, he also oversaw the creation of what became the West German Auswärtiges Amt (Foreign Office), and thereafter he was the head of its Political Division and deputy to State Secretary Walter Hallstein until 1955. He went on to serve as West German ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) (1955–1958), France (1958–1963), Italy (1963–1965), and the United Kingdom (1965–1970). After retiring from the diplomatic service in 1970, Blankenhorn functioned as the West German representative in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Executive Council until 1976.

Para ello, recurre al método biográfico, enfocándose en la fi gura de Gustavo Caraballo, quien ocupó sucesivos cargos desde la presidencia de Arturo Frondizi hasta la de Isabel Martínez de Perón, e intenta reconstruir rasgos centrales de un conjunto de agentes que –habiendo hecho su primera experiencia durante la gestión de 1958-1962– terminaron ocupando posiciones destacadas en el Estado y la gestión privada posteriormente. Así, pretende contribuir a dos debates. Por un lado, a aquel propio de una sociología histórica del Estado argentino durante los años sesenta y setenta. Por otro, a las discusiones sobre cómo caracterizar los vínculos entre élites políticas y económicas.

Predictions from 13 bed-material load sediment transport models are compared with 19 measurements of bed-material transport in Nottawasaga River, Ontario, using summary plots and geometric statistics. Model selection is based on recent engineering application and suitability for the flow and sediment conditions of the river. The models of Laursen (1958) and Yang (1979) perform best, followed by those of Ackers and White (1973). The models of Van Rijn (1984), Maddock (1976), Karim and Kennedy (1983), Brownlie (1981), and Yang (1973) have considerable data scatter. The models of Engelund and Hansen (1967) and Shen and Hung (1972) are the poorest predictors. Poor model performance is primarily due to overestimation of flow strength needed for particle entrainment and an excessively steep slope in the relations between flow strength and sediment transport.
