Abstract:

The paper estimates intersectoral terms of trade for the period from 1970-71 to 1981-82. On the basis of these results the study further analyses the relationship between terms of trade and aggregate farm output over the period. The findings indicate some improvement in agriculture's terms of trade over the Seventies. However, no conclusive support is provided to the hypothesis of high supply responsiveness of aggregate farm output to shifts in the relative price ratio of sectoral output.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT Enterovirus 71 (EV71) (genus Enterovirus, familyPicornaviridae), a common cause of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), may also cause severe neurological diseases, such as encephalitis and poliomyelitis-like paralysis. To examine the genetic diversity and rate of evolution of EV71, we have determined and analyzed complete VP1 sequences (891 nucleotides) for 113 EV71 strains isolated in the United States and five other countries from 1970 to 1998. Nucleotide sequence comparisons demonstrated three distinct EV71 genotypes, designated A, B, and C. The genetic variation within genotypes (12% or fewer nucleotide differences) was less than the variation between genotypes (16.5 to 19.7%). Strains of all three genotypes were at least 94% identical to one another in deduced amino acid sequence. The EV71 prototype strain, BrCr-CA-70, isolated in California in 1970, is the sole member of genotype A. Strains isolated in the United States and Australia during the period from 1972 to 1988, a 1994 Colombian isolate, and isolates from a large HFMD outbreak in Malaysia in 1997 are all members of genotype B. Although strains of genotype B continue to circulate in other parts of the world, none have been isolated in the United States since 1988. Genotype C contains strains isolated in 1985 or later in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the Republic of China. The annual rate of evolution within both the B and C genotypes was estimated to be approximately 1.35 × 10−2 substitutions per nucleotide and is similar to the rate observed for poliovirus. The results indicate that EV71 is a genetically diverse, rapidly evolving virus. Its worldwide circulation and potential to cause severe disease underscore the need for additional surveillance and improved methods to identify EV71 in human disease.

Abstract:

This study examines changes in educational financing since 1970- 71, looking at provincial differences in funding in relation to GDP, total government expendi- tures, enrolments and funding for elementary-secondary and tertiary schooling, as well as in relation to the funds contributed by each level of government. Since the late 1970's reductions have occurred in constant dollar per student expenditures at both elementary—secondary and university levels. In contrast to the early to late 1970's when provinces contributed ever larger proportions of the necessary funds, since that time both federal and municipal governments have been forced to increase their share of educational funding. These changes are examined not just in terms of intergovernmental relations but more importantly in terms of the fiscal crisis of the state.

The social climate for women has changed considerably since the Attitudes Toward Women Scale (AWS; Spence & Helmreich, 1972a) was developed in the early 1970s, but the pattern of change in AWS scores throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s is unclear. Published reports of data from 71 samples of American undergraduates responding to the AWS were located and analyzed for differences across time (1970–1995) and region (South and non-South). Women's AWS scores were strongly correlated with year of scale administration ( r = .78, p < .001), and men's scores showed a similar trend toward more liberal/feminist attitudes ( r = .60, p < .001). Scores show a steady trend toward more liberal/feminist attitudes, with no appreciable reversal or slowdown during the 1980s. Gender differences steadily increased from 1970 to 1985 and decreased from 1986 to 1995. Southern samples were marginally more conservative/traditional. The results are discussed in terms of generational differences, the effects of maternal employment on attitudes, and the individual's experience of cultural change.

Using extensive Canadian longitudinal data from the years 1969–71, the authors estimate union-nonunion wage differentials of 12–14 percent for 1969 and 13–16 percent for 1970. These estimates are not adjusted for selectivity because three different tests to identify selectivity yield no evidence of selectivity bias. The authors argue that although testing for selectivity is often essential, selectivity adjustments have resulted in greatly inflated estimates of union-nonunion wage differentials in some studies and should therefore be used with caution.

Launaea calmadowensis from Saanag Region in north Somalia is described as a species new to science and illustrated, based on a single gathering known from a hitherto unidentified part of a collection made by R. Bavazzano & J. J. Lavranos in 1970/71 and preserved at FT Herbarium. It is inferred from the comparison of diagnostic morphological characters that this species from gypsaceous hills belongs to the L. angustifolia group of L. sect. Zollikoferia and is most closely related to the North African L. quercifolia.

Abstract:

The Sassandra Basin, like most regions of Côte d'Ivoire, is increasingly affected by droughts that involve many environmental, social and economic impacts. This basin is full of several amenities such as hydroelectric dams, hydraulic and agricultural dams. There is also a strong agricultural activity. In the context of climate change, it is essential to analyze the occurrence of droughts in order to propose mitigation or adaptation measures for water management. The methodological approach consisted initially in characterizing the dry sequences by the use of the SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index) and secondly in determining the probabilities of occurrence of successive dry years using by Markov chains 1 and 2. The results indicate that most remarkable droughts in terms of intensity and duration occurred after the 1970s. A comparison of Markov matrices 1 and 2 between the period considered 1953–2015 with the periods 1953–1970 and 1971–2015 shows a profound change in the distribution of droughts at the different station. Thus, the probability of having two successive dry years is greater over the period 1970–2015 and is accentuated to the Southern and Northern regions (probabilities ranging from 71% to 80%) of the basin. Over the 1970–2015 period, the probability of obtaining three successive dry years is significantly high in this watershed (between 20% and 70%).

Abstract:

Since the early 1990s, recoveries from recessions in the US have been plagued by weak employment growth. We investigate whether a similar problem afflicts other developed economies, and whether technology is a culprit. We study recoveries from 71 recessions in 28 industries and 17 countries from 1970-2011. We find that though GDP recovered more slowly after recent recessions, employment did not. Industries that used more routine tasks, and those more exposed to robotization, did not recently experience slower employment recoveries. Finally, middle-skill employment did not recover more slowly after recent recessions, and this pattern was no different in routine-intensive industries.

Analisamos um evento de letramento em um curso de Pedagogia. Interessamo-nos pelos sentidos produzidos durante um dos momentos da disciplina sobre letramentos literários que objetivou a formação do professor leitor, com base na premissa de que o hábito da leitura favorece a mediação na construção desse letramento. Para fins de registro, utilizamo-nos de gravações em áudio e anotações em diário de campo. As interações foram analisadas a partir dos preceitos de dialogismo e construção de sentidos de Bakhtin ([1929] 2006; [1970-71] 2017) e evidenciaram uma vasta gama de interpretações polifônicas nas práticas sociais dos estudantes.

Abstract:

Planning documents for the Seventies emphasized the importance of primary education and the curtailment of the mushrooming growth at the higher level. Our review suggests that this policy has had only partial success in implementation. Viewed in the context of educational planning theory and the evidence available for Pakistan, the policy is found to be sound. While the benefits of a correct distribution of investment within the educational sector are self-evident, resource constraints have been leading to an overall underinvestment in the educational sector. We show that Pakistan's public sector education is highly subsidized and so to supplement the limited resources devoted to it, we recommend, as a possible solution, a selective application of user charges.

In 11 patients bilateral surgical interventions were performed. The majority of patients had systemic hereditary diseases of the skeleton. Principal indications for total hip arthroplasty were elaborated and optimum implant design with regard for the nosology and patient’s age were determined. Mean follow up period made up 9.5 (1 - 23) years. Preoperative evaluation results by Harris Score varied from 28 to 50 points, postoperative - from 79 to 91 points. Good results were achieved in 91.6% of observations.

During the period from 1970 to 2015 total hip arthroplasty was performed in 60 patients (71 surgeries) aged 14 - 18 years at the CITO department for child bone pathology and adolescent orthopaedics. Przedmiotem artykułu jest seria linorytów zatytułowana Znaki ostrzegawcze, zrealizowana przez krakowskiego artystę Leszka Sobockiego w latach 1968–71 i składająca się z 21 kompozycji. Na tle współczesnej im twórczości polskich artystów linoryty prezentują się jako gruntownie przemyślane komentarze, rejestrujące nie tylko szarą codzienność Polski Ludowej, ale i newralgiczne momenty naznaczone kryzysami komunizmu. Znaki ostrzegawcze odnoszą się do studenckiego buntu w marcu 1968 r. oraz robotniczych demonstracji z grudnia 1970 r. Przedmiotowa seria została omówiona w kontekście dwóch innych prac Sobockiego: Opakowania z 1968 r. oraz Jednego dnia w życiu stoczniowca z 1971 r., co pozwoliło nakreślić genealogię Znaków ostrzegawczych oraz wskazać ich miejsce w twórczości artysty.

Abstract:

Active exploration for petroleum in New Zealand is over 120 years old. While some sporadic, commercial production was obtained already in the earliest part of this century, exploration until 1920 was entirely guided by the occurrence of natural seepages. 1925–1944 was the first period of scientifically-oriented exploration, spurred particularly by the requirements of the second World War. In 1955 began the present period of more intensified prospecting, which in 1965 extended to New Zealand's very large ofshore area. The onshore Kapuni gas/condensate field was discovered in 1959, and the giant offshore Maui field in 1969. Production started in 1970 and 1979, respectively. Exploration enormously increased and expanded all over the country in the late 1960's and early 1970's, with concession holdings reaching a record high in 1970/71:131,673 km2 onshore and 1,003,669 km2 offshore. But a sharp decline followed in the mid-late 1970's, which was partly Government-induced and political, partly due to a prolonged lack of success. A change of Government policy in 1980 started a new cycle of intense exploration, with enthusiasm rapidly fuelled by a string of new, though small discoveries in Taranaki onshore, and, in 1986/87, by what is believed to be a large oil and gas discovery in Taranki offshore. Drilling activity has reached record levels over the last years, while exploration in general is branching out again to many other areas and basins, outside Taranaki. Total production in 1986 amounted to 4,546 million m3 of gas (plus 744 million m3 re-injected), 1.208 million m3 of condensate, 186,700 m3 of LPG and smaller amounts of natural gasoline and butane, and 0.501 million m3 of oil.

Abstract This study examines the variations in tropical cyclone (TC) genesis positions and their subsequent tracks for different phases of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon in the Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga region (FST region) using Joint Typhoon Warning Center best-track data. Over the 36-yr period from 1970/71 to 2005/06, 122 cyclones are observed in the FST region. A large spread in the genesis positions is noted. During El Niño years, genesis is enhanced east of the date line, extending from north of Fiji to over Samoa, with the highest density centered around 10°S, 180°. During neutral years, maximum genesis occurs immediately north of Fiji with enhanced genesis south of Samoa. In La Niña years, there are fewer cyclones forming in the region than during El Niño and neutral years. During La Niña years, the genesis positions are displaced poleward of 12°S, with maximum density centered around 15°S, 170°E and south of Fiji. The cyclone tracks over the FST region are also investigated using cluster analysis. Tracks during the period 1970/71–2005/06 are conveniently described using three separate clusters, with distinct characteristics associated with different ENSO phases. Finally, the role of large-scale environmental factors affecting interannual variability of TC genesis positions and their subsequent tracks in the FST region are investigated. Favorable genesis positions are observed where large-scale environments have the following seasonal average thresholds: (i) 850-hPa cyclonic relative vorticity between −16 and −4 (×10−6 s−1), (ii) 200-hPa divergence between 2 and 8 (×10−6 s−1), and (iii) environmental vertical wind shear between 0 and 8 m s−1. The subsequent TC tracks are observed to be steered by mean 700–500-hPa winds.

Neurovirulent enterovirus 71 (EV-A71) caused a massive epidemic in China in 2008–2011. While subgenotype C4 was the major causative agent, a few isolates were almost identical to the prototype EV-A71 strain and belonged to genotype A. This variant was allegedly extinct since 1970, and its identification in this epidemic suggests reintroduction of the archive virus. Regression analysis of genetic distances (TempEst software) was of moderate utility due to the low resolution of classical phylogenetic methods. Bayesian phylogenetic analysis (BEAST software) suggested artificial introduction event based on highly aberrant phylogenetic tree branch rates that differed by over three standard deviations from the mean substitution rate for EV71. Manual nucleotide-level analysis was used to further explore the virus spread pattern after introduction into circulation. Upon reintroduction, the virus accumulated up to seven substitutions in VP1, most of them non-synonymous and located within the capsid’s canyon or at its rims, compatible with readaptation of a lab strain to natural circulation.

AbstractRecent developments in the U.S. pecan industry appear to limit the utility of past research. The importance of pecan variety has emerged as an issue which could alter past results. The linear and double-log models previously fitted to all-pecans (averaged) data may be too restrictive and hence, are less useful for variety-specific analysis. Past research also analyzed price turning points using nominal data. This study investigated functional form and data-averaging problems by fitting separate flexible Box-Cox price-dependent models for all-pecans and each variety of pecans (1970/71-1988/89 deflated data). Results indicate: other nuts substitute for different pecan varieties, estimated all-pecans price flexibility is biased and clouds variety-specific flexibilities, and restrictive functional forms are inappropriate.

Sie verfolgt prospektiv seit der Geburt 294 Kinder mit weiteren Querschnittserhebungen im Alter von zwei, sechs, zehn, 14, 20 und 25 Jahren und konnte zum letzten MZP noch 72 % der Ausgangsstichprobe erfassen. Der vorliegende Beitrag berichtet zusammenfassend über Verlaufsbefunde zu den Leitlinien: Wirkungen biologischer und psychosozialer Risikofaktoren, Stabilität und Veränderung von Intelligenzmeßwerten, Schulerfolg und seelische Gesundheit, Problemverhalten und psychische Störungen, Familienklima und Persönlichkeitsentwicklung und als Beispiel für Reanalysen über Scheidungskinder. Abschließend wird die Entwicklungsdynamik als Störfaktor prognostischer Aussagen, der schwierige Umgang mit vernetzten Daten und die maßgebliche Entwicklungsrelevanz von zwischenmenschlichen Erfahrungen herausgestellt.

AbstractThe research aimed at determining the variability of occurrence of frosty days in Poland and defining the impact of macro-scale circulation types on the occurrence of these days from December to March. The study used daily data on the minimum, maximum and mean daily air temperature for 15 stations located in Poland from 40 winter seasons between 1970/71 and 2009/10. During that period, a decrease in the number of frosty days was noticed across the greater part of Poland; still, these changes were not statistically significant. The conducted research study showed that, of macro-scale circulation types, the North Atlantic Oscillation and Scandinavian type had the most significant impacts on the number of frosty days in Poland.
