Abstract:
Background: Many modern pharmaceutical products were launched during 1950–1980, as reflected in advertisements in the British Medical Journal ( BMJ). One of the first therapeutic areas to benefit from novel effective medications was psychiatry. Methods: We examined BMJ advertising material between 1950 and 1980, including every other issue over six-month periods (October–March) in 1950/1951, 1955/1956, 1957/1958, 1960/1961, 1962/1963, 1965/1966, 1967/1968, 1970/1971, 1972/1973, 1975/1976, 1980/1981. We recorded numbers of adverts for all pharmaceutical products and for psychiatric drugs; we also recorded trade names, generic names and marketing company. Results: Advertising in BMJ peaked in the 1960s and declined markedly in the 1970s. Adverts for psychiatric drugs as a percentage of total pharmaceutical product advertising was broadly similar during 1955–1980, but with peaks in 1960/1961, 1970/1971 and 1975/1976, reflecting the entry of several novel compounds into the market. The peak marketing of antipsychotic drugs, sedatives and anxiolytic drugs was in 1960 and of antidepressants 1970. The time course of the rise of tricyclics and the switch from barbiturates to benzodiazepines can be seen. Drugs for psychiatry rose from ninth (1955/1956) to fourth (1975/1976) in terms of the number of products in the top 10 therapeutic areas. There is no evidence that they were advertised more aggressively (number of adverts/number of products). Conclusions: The birth of modern psychopharmacology is reflected in th e advertising of psychiatric drugs in BMJ. Many drugs currently used, or their closely related successors, were launched in the early to mid-1960s. This rise in modern pharmaceuticals preceded several other major therapeutic areas.

Abstract:
Since the early 1970s, when income distribution became an operative objective of economic development (Chenery et al. 1974), knowledge on the subject has certainly improved. A number of analytical treatises have focused on the issue Pen (1971), Atkinson (1970), Cline (1975) and, more important, data on income distribution are routinely reported for about a score of developing countries (LDCs) and as many developed countries (Des) World Bank (1986), Jain (1975), Paukert (1973). These data deal with the within-country relative income distribution and report one or more of the common inequality measures. Moreover, for some countries measures of absolute poverty exist which report, e.g., the population that lives below a "poverty level", defmed in terms of consumption (calories) or income (for example, Dandekar and Rath (1971), Bardhan (1970), (1973), Fishlow (1972). Such measures of absolute poverty, if aggregated over a number of countries, give a measure of relative world poverty and an idea of how it is distributed between- countries. Cross-country comparisons have also been based on ranking various countries on the basis of their measures of relative income distribution.

Abstract:
After the work of Marmarelis & Naka (1972, 1973) in the catfish retina, systems analysis using stochastic stimuli has had a boom in the seventies (e.g. McCann & Marmarelis, 1975; Eckert & Bishop, 1975; French & Wong, 1977; Lipson, 1975; McCann, 1974; Naka, Marmarelis & Chan, 1975; Spekreijse & Reits, 1982; Trimble & Phillips, 1978; Terzuolo et al. 1982). White-noise analysis was considered to be a general tool for investigating nonlinear systems gaining a maximum of information with a minimum of assumptions about the system. The modification of the original Wiener theory (Wiener, 1958; Cameron & Martin, 1947; McKean, 1972) by Lee & Schetzen (1965) made the theory fairly easy to implement into widely available computers and thus accessible to a larger number of experimenters.

Abstract:

Abstract:
An ongoing study of the ambrosia beetle tribe Xyleborini has resulted in numerous taxonomic changes mostly representing new generic/species combinations which remove species from the once all-encompassing Xyleborus Eichhoff, 1864 to other genera based on revised taxonomic concepts. Abstract:
Long-term variability of the cold subsurface water (CSW) in the Okhotsk Sea is analyzed on the base of all available oceanographic data collected in March through August of 1946-2015 (total 65,742 stations). The Integral Heat Content (IHC) is calculated for each station and average annual IHC anomalies of the cold subsurface water are determined by month and by 2-degree grid. The IHC anomaly series are analyzed using the EOF analysis. Cycles with period of approximately 30 years are revealed in the variations of the subsurface layer heat content. Thus, in the 1946-1950, its temperature decreased, but it grew since 2009-2010 to 2015. The warming of CSW was also observed in the 1951-1964 and 1978-1994, while the cooling was in the 1965-1977 and 1995-2008. Based on this criterion, the CSW thermal condition in certain years is classified as «extremely cold» in 2001, as «cold» in 1949, 1950, 1951, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1999, 2000, 2010, 2012, as «normal» in 1946, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1961, 1962, 1965, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, as «warm» in 1948, 1956, 1964, 1968, 1974, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1997, 2015, and as «extremely warm» in 1963. Statistically significant correlation is found between changes of the CSW thermal conditions and long-term variations of atmosphere and ocean climate indices, as well as local patterns of the atmosphere-ice-ocean interaction in the Okhotsk Sea and adjacent onshore and offshore areas of Asia and the Pacific Ocean.

Abstract:
The margins of many ice sheets and ice caps are marked by the presence of alternating layers of debris-laden and clean ice. The role of this ice in flow and sediment transport near the margins of glaciers has been the subject of considerable controversy between glacial geologists and glaciologists for over three decades.Glacial geologists (Goldthwait, 1951, 1960, 1971, 1975; Bishop, 1957; Souchez, 1967, Boulton, 1970, 1972; Hambrey, 1976) commonly refer to the debris-bearing ice bands as “thrust planes” or “shear planes”, apparently seeing them as reverse faults which transport rock debris from the glacier bed to the surface in a “conveyor-belt-like” manner (Goldthwait, 1975, p. 192). As supporting evidence for the shear-plane mechanism, glacial geologists have offered only qualitative observations and none seem to have actually observed it in action. Glaciologists on the other hand, particularly Weertman (1961), Hooke (1968; 1973), and Hooke and Hudleston (1978), have objected to this concept on physical grounds and have presented convincing arguments for doubting that it is mechanically sound. In spite of the controversy surrounding it, the shear-plane mechanism has gained wide acceptance among geologists and physical geographers and has been perpetuated in recent years through a number of popular introductory geology and physical geography textbooks (e.g. Embleton and King, 1975; Judson, Deffeyes, and Hargraves, 1976; Leet, Judson, and Kauffman, 1978; Press and Siever, 1982; Hamblin; 1982).

None of these, however, has focused on doing survey research in the region. In part, this seemed to indicate a lack of interest in, and/or feasibility for, carrying out this type of research. In fact, when in 1973 MESA members were asked to share with their colleagues the data from surveys they had carried out, only twenty-one individuals responded, and in only nine cases were there survey data gathered in Arab states (“A Preliminary Listing …” 1974). Since then, the situation has improved somewhat. Thus, Palmer et al. (1982) have compiled an analytical index detailing more than 350 studies using survey research techniques in different Arab countries. Also in 1983, an international conference on the evaluation and application of survey research in the Arab world was held at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Study and Conference Center in Bellagio, Italy. The Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation sponsored the conference, which was attended by twenty-four individuals from the United States and seven Arab countries. A book based on the papers and proceedings of the conference will be published soon, edited by Tessler et al. (forthcoming).

Abstract:
The present work has as objective to analyze the trajectory of the actor and Brazilian director Fernando Peixoto, as teatral critic, in the alternative press , specifically, in two periodic ones: Opinião, between 1973 and 1975, and Movimento, between 1975 and 1979. We search to understand the character differentiated of the alternative press during the period of the Brazilian military regimen, the heterogeneity of its proposal, its relation with the sectors of opposition of the country and the meaning politician to be part of this journalistic segment. The critical ones of Peixoto, in both the periodicals, are important documents to apprehend strike them that they occurred in the Brazilian theater: the artistic trends in dispute, the new forms of expression and resistance under the sign of the censorship and, mainly, the meaning of the enrollment of the critic for a politically responsible, transforming and conscientious theater of its function in the fight for national and popular aspirations.

Abstract:
Spain from 1957 to 1975, Iran from 1964 to 1978 and Brazil from 1964 to 1985 are advanced societies on the way of industrialization which under a highly repressive authoritarian regim undertake an accelerated modernization in order to accomply an economic miracle. The political leaders, insure the stability in order to carry out an economic growth and make the country enter into the group of advanced industrialized nations. On the social level, they stop the awakening of the popular consciousness, forbid the leftist parties and independant labour organizations, suppress the strikes and oppose to the mobilization of the masses. One of the caracteristics of this type of government is the presence of technocrats in the high sphere of the state. They are backed by the foreign countries and consequently facilitate the penetration of investments. The middle classes whose standard of living improves are the main beneficiaries of the development, but the peasants and the workers have to pay the price of the growth. The corporatist regime of general Franco and the Brazilian military regime succeed to go through a relatively long and quiet transition period in order to become democracies. On the contrary, the constitutional monarchy of Iran faces a popular uprising and changes into an Islamic theocracy. The origins and the endings of these regimes are thus a validity test for the theories and practices of authoritarian development

Al, Kharusi Khalid. "Dhofar War, 1965-1975." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2018. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/24029/.

Abstract:
This project examines the nature of UK relations with the Omani Sultans, Sultan Said bin Taimur (1932-1970) and his son, Sultan Qaboos (1970- present), in the context of the Dhofar War (1965-1975). The internal and external circumstances of this conflict give valuable insights into Omani independence and sovereignty, thereby addressing the paucity of Omani writing on this conflict (e.g. Al Hamdani, 2010, Al Amri, 2012, Ja'boub, 2010; Muqaibl, 2002). This study utilises a qualitative descriptive analytical methodology to study documents from British, American, Egyptian, and Omani sources, including archival texts from government officials and the revolutionaries. Interviews were also conducted with key military and civilian figures in the Sultanate of Oman and Britain. Examination of the actions undertaken by Sultan Said and Sultan Qaboos in the war highlights a dichotomy between the need to ensure compatibility with British politics at that time and the desire of the Omani leaders to maintain independence in the face of British imperialism. Despite the profound differences between the policies of both Sultans, this study shows that both governments had a developing and negotiable autonomy, rather than existing as a direct colony or an informal colony (see Abdalsatar, 1989, p. 46; Fadel, 1995, p. 212; Halliday, 2008, p. 331; Miles, 1920, pp.222-230; Omar, 2008, pp. 6-7; Owtram, 2004, p. 16;Samah, 2016, p. 273; Sultan & Naqeeb, 2008, p. 26; Wilson, 2012, pp. 331-332). Importantly, the relationship with the British is shown to have been a less important factor in the events and should therefore not be over-stated as informal imperialism. The main political values in the conflict were: (1) the support of tribal leaders; (2) the role of Islam and communism; (3) the unity of the leadership; and (4) the relations between the Sultans and other Gulf leaders. Overall, the relationship between the Omani rulers and the British was one of friendship, cooperation, and exchange of interests, which the Sultans used to maintain the independent needs of Oman.

Abstract:
The surrealists created a lot of collective games ; among them, the exquisiste corpse is no doublt the most famous and the one which was most practised. This research concerns the "plastic" (drawings, collages, even paintings) productions created from the proceed of the surrealist game. It consists in a catalogue raisonne - assembling productions betwwen 1925 and 1975 - and an accompanying text, in which the different historical aspects are studied and analysed (applications of the game, diffusion in europe and america). Secondly, a reflection is proposed about the implications of the transposition from the verbal game to a plastic version of the same. Through a confrontation between surrealist conception of the "poetic" image and the "image" in different domains - such as painting, phtotography, illustration, collage - we try tosee how the exquisite corpse take part of the re-definition of the image - as an element of visibility of the world - in our century. The image seems to reveal itself as a translation of a conception of the world - and not as the world by itself

Goddard, Louis. "J.H. Prynne in context, 1955-1975." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2017. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/68758/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a partial survey of the intellectual and cultural environment in which the contemporary British poet J.H. Prynne began his literary career. Its primary contribution to knowledge consists of a reorientation of critical perspective towards Prynne's early career and its specifically British contexts, as well as a detailed literary-historical account of his relation to those contexts. This account proceeds by analysis of Prynne's prose works rather than his poetry, leading to a secondary contribution in the form of a number of new readings of those works and a consideration of Prynne's attitude towards prose as a form. Extensive use is made of archival material, much of which has not been examined in previous scholarship. The Introduction sets out the methodology of the thesis and argues that existing work on Prynne suffers from interlinked biases against consideration of Prynne's early career and his British influences. Chapter 1 offers an account of a particular network of such influences centred on the University of Cambridge, looking at one regularly cited influence, Donald Davie, and arguing for recognition of a new one in F.R. Leavis. In Chapter 2, Prynne's involvement with the ‘little magazine' scene is considered in detail and an extended reading of his 1967 piece ‘A Note on Metal' is used to reflect on the relationship between prose and its publication contexts. Chapter 3, meanwhile, proposes a third key context for Prynne's early career in the prose fiction of Wyndham Lewis, Edward Upward and Douglas Oliver, before offering a model for Prynne's poetic thinking in this period based on the panspermia hypothesis. The Conclusion attempts to name this model more specifically, while reflecting on the validity of the thesis's semi-biographical approach.

Beard, Alice. "Nova magazine 1965-1975 : a history." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2015. http://research.gold.ac.uk/12286/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an original case history of Nova magazine from 1965-1975, and analyses the magazine’s construction, content and consumption through material culture. Nova made a distinct offering to the world of women’s magazines in the Sixties and Seventies and can be defined by its unique synthesis of editorial breadth and visual innovation. The study considers the correlation between a magazine’s intended, implied and realised meanings. In my analysis of Nova, intended meanings are revealed through an examination of the production process; implied meaning is found within the magazine as an object and text; and Nova’s realised meanings are those articulated through oral history by its readers. Interviews with staff cover the four key areas of Nova’s production; Caroline Baker, Fashion Editor 1967-1975; Gillian Cooke, Editor 1970-1975; David Hillman, Art Director 1969-1975; Maggy Meade-King, Features Writer, 1970-1975. Analysis of these interviews and the design and content of Nova reveals the motivation and ambitions of individual production staff, and evaluates the crucial collaborative practice, creative conflicts and networks of production at the heart of Nova’s making. To better understand magazines, their histories and their futures, it is time that these individuals, working practices and creative networks are both acknowledged and critically evaluated. Recognising the nature and importance of the magazine as composite I adopt a holistic approach as a methodological model for Nova’s analysis. In this thesis I examine the magazine as a whole entity; I analyse its design and contents, alongside a narrative of the processes of its production from its staff and contributors, and consider the use and value of the magazine by its contemporary readers. The agenda for this work, is to plot the processes of production and consumption of Nova in order to reveal the various elements and practices that construct the identity and history of the magazine as a visual, textual and material object.

Krippner, Janine Barbara. "Ngauruhoe inner crater volcanic processes of the 1954-1955 and 1974-1975 eruptions." The University of Waikato, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2760.

Full text
Abstract:
Ngauruhoe is an active basaltic andesite to andesite composite cone volcano at the southern end of the Tongariro volcanic complex, and most recently erupted in 1954-55 and 1974-75. These eruptions constructed the inner crater of Ngauruhoe, largely composed of 1954-55 deposits, which are the basis of this study. The inner crater stratigraphy, exposed on the southern wall, is divided into seven lithostratigraphic units (A to G), while the northern stratigraphy is obscured by the inward collapse of the crater rim. The units are, from oldest to youngest: Unit A, (17.5 m thick), a densely agglutinated spatter deposit with sharp clast outlines; Unit B, (11.2 m) a thick scoria lapilli deposit with local agglutination and scattered spatter bombs up to 1 m in length; Unit C, (6.4 m thick) a clastogenic lava deposit with lateral variations in agglutination; and Unit D, (10 m thick) a scoria lapilli with varying local agglutination. The overlying Unit E (15 cm thick) is a fine ash fallout bed that represents the final vulcanian phase of the 1954-55 eruption. Unit F is a series of six lapilli and ash beds that represent the early vulcanian episode of the 1974-75 eruption. The uppermost Unit G (averaging 10 m thick) is a densely agglutinated spatter deposit that represents the later strombolian phase of the 1974-75 eruption. Units A-D juvenile clasts are porphyritic, with phenocrysts of plagioclase, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, minor olivine, within a microlitic glassy groundmass. Quartzose and greywacke xenoliths are common in most units, and are derived from the underlying basement. The 1954-55 and 1974-75 eruptions are a product of a short-lived, continental arc medium-K calc-alkaline magma. The magma originated from the mantle, then filtered through the crust, undergoing assimilation and fractionation, and evolving to basaltic andesite and andesite compositions. The magma body stagnated in shallow reservoirs where it underwent further crustal assimilation and fractionation of plagioclase and olivine, and homogenisation through magma mixing. Prior to the 1954-55 eruption a more primitive magma body was incorporated into the melt. The melt homogenised and fed both the 1954-55 and 1974-75 eruptions, with a residence time of at least 20 years. The 1954-55 eruption produced alternating basaltic andesite and andesite strombolian activity and more intense fire fountaining, erupting scoria and spatter that built up the bulk of the inner crater. A period of relative quiescence allowed the formation of a cooled, solid cap rock that resulted in the accumulation of pressure due to volatile exsolution and bubble coalescence. The fracturing of the cap rock then resulted in a vulcanian eruption, depositing a thin layer of fine ash and ballistic blocks. The 1974-75 eruption commenced with the rupturing of the near-solid cap rock from the 1954-55 eruption in an explosive vulcanian blast, the result of decompressional volatile exsolution and bubble coalescence, and possible magma-water interaction. The eruption later changed to strombolian style, producing a clastogenic lava that partially flowed back into the crater.

Trentin, Filippo. "Rome 1945-1975 : an archaeology of modernity." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2013. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/63031/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates Rome as a site of modernity and an incubator of aesthetic modernism. More specifically, it analyses Rome’s visual and discursive imagery during the three decades that stretch from the end of the Second World War to the 1970s. It does so through a comparative analysis of literary, cinematic and critical texts. These include novels such as Levi’s L’orologio (1950) and Pasolini’s Petrolio (1992); films such as Rossellini’s Roma, città aperta (1945) and Fellini’s La dolce vita (1959); critical texts stemming from Roman intellectual circles in journals such as Rinascita, La strada, Presente, and Nuovi argomenti; and historical analyses of Rome’s urban development such as those of Benevolo, Insolera, Cederna, and Vidotto. The aim of this study is twofold. On the one hand it challenges traditional readings of Rome as an anti-modern or pre-modern urban entity (i.e. the myth of the ‘Eternal City’), which was generated during the Grand Tour and has continued to inform academic scholarship on Rome. On the other, it shows that Rome lies at the centre of extremely significant constellations of modern images and discourses which can be compared to most studied examples of urban modernity such as Paris, London, Berlin or New York. From a methodological perspective, this thesis delves into Foucault’s notion of ‘Archaeology’. Instead of analysing texts in a strictly philological way, attempting to detect their affiliation or their belonging to specific traditions, this thesis investigates its sources as symptoms of history’s movements. Instead of framing Rome through traditional categories such as ‘Eternal City’ or ‘Modern Hell’, this archaeological analysis suggests the coexistence of three discursive formations of Rome’s modern image, which are based on the concepts of fleetingness, dilation and entropy. These three terms inform the three sections of the thesis. Furthermore, it argues that Rome represents a case of ‘anachronistic’ modernity that might allows us to depart from canonical interpretations of Italian modernity as ‘backward’.

Abstract:
The polymer industry has been challenged to produce new polymeric materials by blending two or more homopolymers or random copolymers or by synthesizing graft copolymers. To meet the challenge, various methods have been explored, namely, (1) by synthesizing a new monomer, polymerizing it, and then blending it with an existing homopolymer or random copolymer, (2) by copolymerizing existing monomers and then blending it with an existing homopolymer or random copolymer, (3) by chemically modifying an existing homopolymer or random copolymer and then blending it with other homopolymers or copolymers already available, or (4) by synthesizing new compatibilizer(s) to improve the mechanical properties of two immiscible homopolymers or random copolymers that otherwise have unacceptable mechanical properties. There are numerous monographs (Cooper and Estes 1979; Han 1984; Paul and Newman 1978; Platzer 1971, 1975; Sperling 1974; Utracki 1990) describing various aspects of polymer blends. In the 1970s, Han and coworkers (Han 1971, 1974; Han and Kim 1975; Han and Yu 1971a, 1971b, 1972; Han et al. 1973, 1975; Kim and Han 1976) conducted seminal experimental studies on the rheology of immiscible polymer blends and related the observed rheological behavior to blend morphology. Independently, in the same period, Vinogradov and coworkers (Ablazova et al. 1975; Brizitsky et al. 1978; Tsebrenko et al. 1974, 1976; Vinogradov et al. 1975) conducted a series of experimental studies relating the blend rheology to blend morphology. Van Oene (1972, 1978) also pursued, independently, experimental studies for a better understanding of rheology–morphology relationships in immiscible polymer blends. Since then, using different polymer pairs, numerous researchers have conducted experimental studies, which were essentially the same as, or very similar to, the previous experimental studies of Han and coworkers, Vinogradov and coworkers, and van Oene in the 1970s. It is fair to state that those studies in the 1980s and 1990s have not revealed any significant new findings.

Abstract:
Abstract Late Sunday evening December 23, 1888, Vincent Van Gogh, then 35 years old, cut off the lower half of his left ear and took it to a brothel, where he asked for a prostitute named Rachel and handed the ear to her, asking her to “keep this object carefully. “ How is this extraordinary event to be accounted for? Over the years, a variety of explanations have been proposed, and more than a dozen of them will be sketched below. What sense can be made of such a variety of interpretations? Is one of them uniquely true, are all of them true in some way, or, perhaps, are none of them true? And how can we know? This incident is examined in order to explore the problem of alternative explanations in the study of lives (Allport, 1961, 1965; Hogan, 1976; Murray et al., 1938; Runyan, 1978, 1980a, 1980b; White, 1963, 1975) and to contribute to a growing literature on the logic and methodology of psychobiographical studies (e.g., Anderson, 1981; Crosby, 1979; Elms, 1976; Gedo, 1972; George, 1971; Glad, 1973; Izenberg, 1975; Lifton & Olson, 1974; Mack, 1971; Mazlish, 1968; Meyer, 1972). The discussion is intended to raise basic issues encountered in applying personality theories to the life of a single individual, whether a historical figure, a research subject, or a clinical patient.

Abstract Debate over the evolutionary determinants of avian clutch size has ignored the potential of nest-dwelling, parasitic arthropods to significantly reduce the reproductive success of birds (McKilligan 1987; this volume: Delannoy and Cruz, Chapter 5; Rogers et al., Chapter 7). Parasitic mites (Arthropoda, Arachnida, Acari) occur in bird nests (Hicks 1953, 1959, 1971, 1975; Wilson 1965; Philips and Dindal 1977, 1979; Welch 1977), especially nests sheltered from weather and nests built in cavities (Woodroffe 1953; Moss 1978; Chow et al. 1983). Such mites are known to feed on blood, which causes weight loss and mortality of nestlings (Moss and Camin 1970) and may cause desertion of whole broods (Moss 1966).

Abstract Feminists have argued that illicit drug use is abhorred in women precisely because it is regarded as a threat to the stability of the family, that women drug users are seen as rejecting the traditional role of motherhood (Ettore, 1985; News Release, 1979; Perry, 1979). With few exceptions (Bauman, 1980; Carr, 1975; Faires, 1976-7; Kaufman, 1985; Perry, 1987; Stewart, 1987), the drug using mother is generally regarded in negative terms. Some regard drug use by the mother as at least putting children at risk (Black et al., 1987; Carr, 1975; Mondanaro, 1989; Wilson el al., 1979), whilst others see it in stark terms of outright unfitness to be a mother (Densen Gerber and Rohrs, 1973; Densen-Gerber et al., 1972).

Abstract:
Abstract Although John Garcia published his first paper (Garcia, Kimeldorf, & Koelling, 1955) on conditioned taste aversion (CTA) in the widely read journal, Science, it was his seminal paper on the relationship of cue to consequence, which appeared in Psychonomic Science over a decade later (Garcia & Koelling, 1966) that triggered an intensive investigation of this unique phenomenon by other investigators. The majority of the investigations over the next decade, parametric studies, were empirical in nature, attempting to delineate a set of functions describing the manner in which different levels of a variable, for example, conditioned stimulus (CS) or unconditioned stimulus (US) amount (Bond & DiGiusto, 1975) or intensity (e.g., Dragoin, 1971a; Kalat, 1974) affect the development of CTA. Other studies focused on the neural structures mediating the association of taste and illness (e.g., Buresova & Bures, 1973, 1974, 1975). During this time there was also much concern and discussion as to whether or not CTA conformed to the general laws of learning (e.g., Kalat, 1977; Kalat & Rozin, 1971; Revusky, 1977; Rozin & Kalat, 1971; Seligman, 1970). There was also much speculation as to whether “stimulus relevance,” the focal point of Garcia and Koelling’s (1966) paper, was learned or innate (e.g., Mackintosh, 1973; Revusky, 1977). During this decade, however, there was little effort to answer this latter question experimentally.

Abstract The way in which the number and identity of species inhabiting an island, a set of islands, or any other discrete patch of habitat varies with such parameters as size, degree of isolation, and habitat heterogeneity has been an important question in ecology, evolutionary biology, and more recently in conservation biology. In the late 1960s and 1970s, a tremendous amount of work was generated by the model of island biogeography of Preston (1962) and MacArthur and Wilson (1963,1967). This model and its predictions have been investigated on real oceanic islands (e.g. Hamilton et al. 3963. Terborgh 1971, 1973; Diamond et al. 1976; Diamond and Mayr 1976; Mayr and Diamond 1976), and also on mountaintops (Cook 1974; Johnson 1975), caves (Culver et al. 1973; Vuilleu- mier 1973), ponds (Hubbard 1973), and such patches of habitat as isolated fragments of forest (e.g. Moore and Hooper 1975; Galli et al. 1976; Burgess and Sharpe 1981; Pickett and White 1985; Soule 1986).

Abstract:
In Portugal, in the 1970s, the Local Outpatient Support Service (SAAL) constituted a progressive housing program, which instituted participatory democracy and a collaborative framework between the State, specialists and target populations, seeking to solve the urgent problem of homelessness. Focusing on three specific case studies [Távora: Prelada (Porto, 1975-1976), Hestnes Ferreira: Fonsecas e Calçada (Lisbon, 1974-1988) and Costa Cabral: Pego Longo (Queluz, 1975-1977)], possible reflections of the previous paths of these architects in their respective urban and housing project proposals. Basing the analysis on original material, deposited in various archives and specialized libraries, this article offers a first systematization of the collected information, promoting a methodology for analysing the relationship between research and the practice of architecture/urbanism, developed and experimented in Portugal. Finally, clues are offered for the recovery of these participatory social projects, as possible models to follow today. Abstract:
A béketeremtő műveletekben való részvétel azonban áldozatokkal is járt. 1973. április 7-én egy nemzetközi megfigyelőket szállító, az NEFB felségjelével ellátott helikoptert rakétatalálat ért, és a rajta utazó két magyar NEFB-tag is elhunyt. 1974-ben a harcok felerősödésével több ellenőrző csoportot is be kellett vonni a központba, és a harmadik váltás is jószerével Saigonra és körzetére redukálta tevékenységét. 1975. április 30-án a Ho Shi Minh-hadművelet záróakkordjaként elfoglalták Saigont. A magyar kontingens ott tartózkodó állományát amerikai segítséggel vonták ki, és május 8-án tértek haza.

Abstract:
A special case of the shape from shading problem, applicable to surfaces with unusual reflecting properties, was solved by Rindfleisch (1966). For the special reflectance properties he considered, a profile of the solution surface can be obtained by integrating along predetermined straight lines in the image plane. The general problem was formulated and solved later (Horn, 1970 and 1975). The method of characteristic strip expansion was used originally to solve the nonlinear first-order partial differential image irradiance equation. The reflectance map makes the analysis of the shape from shading algorithm much easier, provided that both light sources and viewer are far away from the scene being viewed (Horn, 1977; Horn and Sjoberg, 1979). Several iterative schemes, mostly based on minimization of some function containing an integral of the brightness error, arose later (Woodham, 1977; Strat, 1979; Ikeuchi and Horn, 1981; Kirk, 1984; Brooks and Horn, 1985; Horn and Brooks, 1986; Kirk, 1987; Frankot and Chellappa, 1988). Abstract:
The Bezold-Brücke effect (change in hue with luminance) is observed for unrelated colors by techniques such as hue naming. (Boynton & Gordon, 1965; Luria, 1967; Smith, Pokorny & Swartley, 1973). For related colors the phenomenon is seen when a hue match is made between two fields of different brightness, either by presenting the fields at different luminances (Purdy, 1931) or by setting adjacent regions at different luminances to create a darker field by induction (Wildt & Bouman, 1968; Coren & Keith, 1970). There are several studies that suggest that the Bezold-Brücke effect may not occur for related colors embedded in an equal luminance surround (Takahama, Sobagaki & Nayatani, 1978; Bartleson, 1979; Fuld & Otto, 1985). However these studies did not address the issue of the Bezold-Brücke effect specifically.

Abstract:
Abstract Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is a common way of treating the occlusive disease, atherosclerosis. However, these grafts tend to fail due to thrombosis from (i) surgical techniques and the diseased state of the native coronary artery a few months post-surgery[Lesperance et al., 1972; Campeau et al., 1975], and (ii) the development of intimal hyperplasia that acts a precursor for atherosclerosis and plaque rupture one or more years post-operatively [Grodin et al., 1979; Campeau et al., 1983]. Coronary vein grafts tend to occlude preferentially at the distal end-to-side anastomosis and less frequently at sites along the graft itself (i.e. the graft body) and at the proximal anastomosis [FitzGibbon et al., 1978, 1986].

Abstract:
This document is an architectural survey of eight armories, seven field maintenance shops (FMS; three detached and four attached to the armory), and ten metal storage buildings utilized by the Ohio Army National Guard (OHARNG), located across the state of Ohio. The armories and OMS were constructed or received extensive renovation and additions between 1971 and 1977, while the majority of the metal storage buildings were constructed in the 1980s. This survey satisfies Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA) as amended and was used to recommend the eligibility of these buildings and structures for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). It is the recommendation of this report that two armories; Alliance Armory (1976) and Xenia Armory (1975) and one associated support building; Xenia motor storage building (1975) are significant under National Register of Historic Places criteria and retain enough integrity to be individually eligible for the NRHP. Volume II of this report is published separately and contains the ERDC-CERL architectural survey forms.
