Abstract:
AbstractThis paper discusses growth of Christianity in northern Nigeria since 1975. It shows Christianity has grown in northern Nigeria making it more pluralistic than it was at independence in 1960. The paper argues that Christianity has not only solidified its base in what is now called the Middle Belt but it has made inroads into core Muslims states. This is why the maintenance of the plurality of the twelve states that implemented the Shari'ah law in northern Nigeria from 1999 has become a major issue of contention in the Shari'ah debates.

Abstract:

Hoyle, Brian. "British art cinema, 1975-2000 : context and practice." Thesis, University of Hull, 2006. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:5698.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis shall largely concern itself with examining two general aspects of British art cinema between 1975 and 2000; namely, how the British art cinema operates as an art cinema in the context of its 1960s and 1970s European counterparts54 and how the individual filmmaking practices of these British directors both conform to and deviate from classic definitions of art cinema. In this way, this thesis shall demonstrate the ways in which British art cinema can be characterised not only as a belated continuation of classic European art cinema but also a significant development from it. Therefore, it shall examine the work of key British art filmmakers in the context of art cinema history, linking it with earlier movements in European art cinema such as Italian neo-realism and the French Nouvelle Vague, individual forebears such as Resnais, Godard, Pasolini and Wenders, and previous examples of art films in Britain. Furthermore in examining the filmmaking practices of these leading British art cinema directors this thesis will demonstrate British art cinema's stylistic and thematic eclecticism. Taken as a whole, it engages not only with its European counterpart, but with a wide range of influences including classical Hollywood, pop art, structural cinema and music videos as well as more typically British cinematic traditions such as the documentary and social realism. British art film directors have also experimented with new and existing filmmaking technologies and techniques, and made advances in cinematic style and the treatment of subject matter from their European colleagues of the 1960s and 1970s. To investigate these claims, the chapters in this thesis shall not address individual films or filmmakers, but rather, to allow a greater breadth of analysis, will examine their individual attitudes towards factors such as realism and film narrative, and their ties with the cinematic avant-garde and Hollywood as well as European art cinema, that can help to contextualise their films in the traditions of both European art cinema and British cinema itself. Chapter One will provide a brief critical overview of art cinema in Britain before 1975, thereby contextualising contemporary British art cinema's place in British film history, and highlighting the changes in the British film industry that made the growth of British art cinema possible. Several key aspects of British art cinema shall then be examined individually to illustrate the way in which these factors have helped to shape and characterise British art cinema. Chapter Two will analyse the attitudes of British art filmmakers towards the modes of cinematic realism that have perhaps come to dominate British film history. Chapter Three addresses the attitudes of British art filmmakers towards narrative, and will examine the degree to which they have rejected the classical Hollywood narrative in favour of modernist, structuralist, and other less traditional methods of cinematic storytelling. Chapter Four will examine the avant-garde roots of several contemporary British art filmmakers and illustrate the ways in which some of the ideas and techniques of avant-garde filmmaking have carried over into their subsequent work in art-house feature films. Finally, Chapter Five will address the influence of both Hollywood and European art-house styles of filmmaking on British art cinema. It shall also demonstrate how these often contradictory influences have helped to mould the latter's distinctive shape, and highlight the disparity amongst British filmmakers between those who look towards Hollywood for inspiration and financial backing and those who choose to operate in the culturally richer but financially poorer European cinema.

Abstract:
This doctoral dissertation analyses how the Franco regime was portrayed on the big scree in the twenty-five years that followed the death of the dictator. It investigates the depictions of the dictatorship, the most recurrent topics and periods represenetd and the movies' reception by critics and the general public. The thesis aims at exploring the interferences between cinema and history, between culture and the historicel contexts in which the latter is produced and consumed. , as a way of understanding how spanish ociety dealt with its recent past. The doctoral dissertation is divided into three parts, according to three different political eras in recent spanish history. The first covers the tarnsition to democraty (1975-1982). The second deals with the four consecutive terms that the spanish socialist workers party (PSOE) was in power (1982-1996). The third section explores the first term of the people 's party (PP) (1996-2000). The PhD thesis analyses more than 150 films. It zpplies Marc Ferro's concepts of "cinematic reading of history" and "historical reading of the film", Pierre Sorlin's ideas about filmic attachment points, together with filmic analytical series and filmic constants. This study aanlyses the cinematogarphic memory of francoism from the late 1970s to the beginning of the twenty-first century and thus spanish cociety throughout these years

Abstract:
This thesis lies within a cultural and historiographic context called “Memory boom” and tries to investigate on the way the past resurfaces in the heart of the French public life and more exactly through eight of the main political cultures of the Hexagon: communist, socialist, radical, christian-democrat, liberal, gaullist and national populist. This research follows a three-part pattern. We will first try to show that the memory of a political culture seems to be built on a more or less latent state of tension between History (which remains the substratum it takes root in) and Power, which directly influences the way the past is handled and summoned. Once those circumstances are established we will enter the heart of the system of Memory and realize that Memory exerts a true power within a political culture: it is constantly referred to, sometimes even as a guide, and provides many an opportunity and place to “remember”/ have memories, each time improving its cohesion. Far from sinking into oblivion, Clio regularly reappears in between Memory and Power, being used in its turn by the different political cultures mostly in a conflicting perspective. Clio seems to have a very special place in France at the meeting points between major political issues and the reasons of state. As the heirs of a long History the French resort to their past more than others and their political life reflects this characteristic in extenso

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to explore the notion and experience of Otherness as embodied in Lebanese fictional texts by such authors as 'Ily5s Khaff, Hudd Barakdt,Rashida l- Da'If and Handna l-Shaykhd, uring and after the civil war in the Lebanon( 1975-1990). the study is divided into seven sections, beginning with a theoretical background It moves from the personal to the intrapersonal view of the Other in Lebanese writing, examining the varying reactions within the texts themselves towards the Otherness of their environment. Otherness stems from the tension and conflict between Self(ves)a nd Other(s).I n the Lebanon, the pre-warp olitical and geographical dialogueo f unity largely glossed over differences of gender, religion and class status - differences that were brutally accentuatebdy the outbreako f civil war. As a result,t he conceptiono f the Lebanona s the unified totality of a single society, despite its variety, broke down. The war brought contradictionin the form of opposingv iews of the Other,f rom which thep roblematico f Othernesds erives.T he prevailingd ilemmao f Othernessis not that it escapeds efinition, but that it continually redefines itself according to its context. This process of redefinition involves such multiplicity that it is, therefore, best dealt with in separate sections. Otherness is discussed here in terms of difference, articulated in theories of subjectivity by thinkers such as Levinas,L ukAcs Lacan and Goldmann: it appears to be based on the relationship of the Self to the Other, but is also perceived within the Self. The Other is therefore different, but - by its very definition - is related to the original (as,for instance, subject and object, East and West, male and female). This study focuses on the problematic of Otherness concerning the personal, sexual, cultural and social Self. Otherness is emphasised by the shattering and loss of the socialS elf during civil conflict. The displacement and change of lifestyle experiencebdy the individual seem to be inextricably linked to a new awarenesasn da nalysis of identity that is evidenti n thec ontemporar writing. The texts reveala background of fragmented reality - whether located in social, political or geographicatlr ansformation When the reality one knows and loves is dramatically destroyed - as witnessed, directly or indirectly, by the authorsd iscussedh ere- the Self is threateneda ndt urns inward ast he Othere ncroacheusp on its territory. Initially, the relationshipo f Self and Otherc learly seems ual, but on closer scrutiny it splinters into further perceptions of Otherness This is reflected in the fragmented style of writing, which is often multi-layered, scattered with synchronic flashbacks symbolic references surreail mages and imagined interludes.

Abstract:
This paper aims to investigate major determinants of interprovincial migration in Turkey until 2010. In recent decades the magnitude of migration in absolute terms has increased considerably: During 1975-1980, 3.6 million people migrated, which constitutes 9.4% of the total population. These numbers have increased to 6.7 million people and 11.2% in the 1995-2000 period. The rate of increase is especially tremendous for the 1985-1990 period with 41%. Over the years the composition of migration has also changed: In the past rural-to-urban migration was predominant; however, today there is remarkable amount of urban-to-urban migration. During 1975-1980, 66% of the total migrants were towards urban centers, which increased to 75% during 1995-2000. On the other hand, the percentage of total migrants towards the village centers declined from 34 to 25 in the respective periods.&#x0D; From 2008 on, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) started publishing yearly unemployment statistics at provincial level, which permits an analysis of Turkey’s migration patterns within the Harris-Todaro framework. Moreover since 2007, TUIK started implementing Address Based Population Registration System, which enables tracking migration moves continuously, rather than by intermittent five to ten year periods. However, data was not adequate to test Turkey’s migration within the Harris-Todaro framework, especially due to lack of average wages at the provincial level. Therefore, utilizing the 2010 provincial level data, we tried to explain Turkey’s internal migration based on variables such as population born outside of their current province, number of university students, and a proxy variable we developed for average wages.&#x0D;

Abstract:
The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) is an independent government regulator responsible for safety, emergency preparedness and the working environment in the Norwegian petroleum industry. Norway’s regulations for petroleum operations offshore and on land are risk-based, and give great emphasis to principles for reducing health, safety and environmental (HSE) risk. They have been developed over more than 40 years, changing from detailed prescriptive regulations in the early days to the present requirements, which are largely formulated in performance-based (functional) terms. They specify requirements for the various aspects, characteristics or qualities which a product, process or service must possess. In our regulations there are requirements for reporting incidents and specifically to report on damages to load-bearing structures and pipeline systems. About 2900 incidents with risers and pipelines were reported on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) from 1975 to January 2017. Of these, 2/3 related to pipelines and 1/3 to risers, and they were of varying degrees of severity. The incidents with highest risk for personnel concerned risers and more than 80 reported major incidents involving flexible risers occurred in the period from 2000–2016. This paper will briefly summarise the development of the regulations and give examples from the pipeline regulations and the way the PSA follows up the industry today. We will also present statistical data of incidents related to risers. Since the start of the trends in risk level project (RNNP) on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) in 1999–2000 there has been 84 reported riser incidents (classified as major in the PSA RNNP-project) where most of those incidents are related to flexibles. There has been no major accident related to risers on the NCS in the same period and very few leaks. 8 of 11 reported leaks for pipelines and risers within the safety zone has been from flexible risers, with relatively low leak rates.

Abstract:
In a Finnish study of four different academic disciplines, Ylijoki (2000) found that in Computer Science there was a disparity between the conceptions held by undergraduate students and staff about their discipline; students viewed it as being far more pragmatic and results focused than did their instructors. Not surprisingly, here at our Australian university where the undergraduate Computer Science program emphasizes programming and problem solving skills, the authors had noticed a similar inconsistency between staff and student beliefs. This paper reports on an effort to realign these conceptions and broaden student experience using an assessment task. Centered on solutions to the popular ‘Sudoku’ puzzle (Sudoku, 2005), the task was designed and introduced into an Intelligent Systems course, a final year elective of a Computer Science degree. The goal was to expose students to some of the ‘pure’ rather than applied aspects of the Computer Science discipline (Becher &amp; Trowler, 2001), by using assessment to encourage experimental learning (Kolb &amp; Fry, 1975). The assessment specification instructed students to design and conduct several ‘in silica’ Computer Science experiments to solve and/or create Sudoku puzzles. Importantly, students were asked to keep a Research Diary documenting their thoughts, attempts, backtracking and progresses as they attempted the assignment. Most unique from a student’s perspective was that ‘failure’ to solve the given problem by experimentation was a viable option; their efforts would be rewarded given they conducted themselves ‘scientifically’ in their attempt.

Abstract:
Short-duration facilities have been used for the past thirty-five years to obtain measurements of heat transfer, aerodynamic loading, vibratory response, film-cooling influence, purge flow migration, and aeroperformance for full-stage high-pressure turbines operating at design corrected conditions of flow function, corrected speed, and stage pressure ratio. This paper traces the development of experimental techniques now in use at The Ohio State University (OSU) Gas Turbine Laboratory (GTL) from initial work in this area at the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory (CAL, later to become Calspan) in 1975 through to the present. It is intended to summarize the wide range of research that can be performed with a short-duration facility and highlight the types of measurements that are possible. Beginning with heat-flux measurements for the vane and blade of a Garrett TFE 731-2 HP turbine stage with vane pressure-surface slot cooling, the challenge of each experimental program has been to provide data to aid turbine designers in understanding the relevant flow physics and help drive the advancement of predictive techniques. Through many different programs, this has involved collaborators at a variety of companies and experiments performed with turbine stages from Garrett, Allison, Teledyne, Pratt and Whitney, General Electric Aviation, Rocketdyne, Westinghouse, and Honeywell. The Vane/Blade Interaction measurement and CFD program, which ran from the early eighties until 2000, provided a particularly good example of what can be achieved when experimentalists and computational specialists collaborate closely. Before conclusion of this program in 2000, the heat-flux and pressure measurements made for this transonic turbine operated with and without vane trailing edge cooling flow were analyzed and compared to predictive codes in conjunction with engineers at Allison, United Technologies Research Center, Pratt and Whitney, and GE Aviation in jointly published papers. When the group moved to OSU in 1995 along with the facility used at Calspan, refined techniques were needed to meet new research challenges such as investigating blade damping and forced response, measuring aeroperformance for different configurations, and preparing for advanced cooling experiments that introduced complicating features of an actual engine to further challenge computational predictions. This required conversion of the test-gas heating method from a shock-tunnel approach to a blowdown approach using a combustor emulator to also create inlet temperature profiles, the development of instrumentation techniques to work with a thin-walled airfoil with backside cooling, and the adoption of experimental techniques that could be used to successfully operate fully cooled turbine stages (vane row cooled, blade row cooled, and proper cavity purge flow provided). Further, it was necessary to develop techniques for measuring the aeroperformance of these fully cooled machines.

Abstract:
Genetic algorithms (GAs) are a problem solving strategy that uses stochastic search. Since their introduction (Holland, 1975), GAs have proven to be particularly useful for solving problems that are ‘intractable’ using classical methods. The language of genetic algorithms (GAs) is heavily laced with biological metaphors from evolutionary literature, such as population, chromosome, crossover, cloning, mutation, genes and generations. For beginners studying genetic algorithms, there is quite an overhead in gaining comfort with these terms and an understanding of their parallel meanings in the unfamiliar computing milieu of an evolutionary algorithm. This paper describes a ‘hands on’ strategy to introduce and teach genetic algorithms to undergraduate computing students. By borrowing an analogical model from senior biology classes, poppet beads are used to represent individuals in a population (Harrison, 2001). Described are several introductory exercises that transport students from an illustration of natural selection in Biston betula moths, onto the representation and solution of differing mathematical and computing problems. Through student manipulation and interactions with poppet beads, the exercises cover terms such as population, generation, chromosome, gene, mutation and crossover in both their biological and computing contexts. Importantly, the tasks underline the two key design issues of genetic algorithms: the choice of an appropriate chromosome representation, and a suitable fitness function for each specific instance. Finally, students are introduced to the notion of schema upon which genetic algorithms operate. The constructivist model of learning advocates the use of such contextual problems to create an environment where students become active participants in their own learning (Ben-Ari, 1998; Greening, 2000; Kolb, 1984). Initial student feedback about these “hands on” exercises has been enthusiastic. As well, several students have made reference to the lessons learnt as the basis for GA coding in subsequent open-ended assignments. It seems that once the hurdle of becoming familiar with GA terminology has been surmounted, students find genetic algorithms to be particularly intriguing for their uncanny ability to solve incredibly complex problems quickly and proficiently (Moore, 2001).

Abstract:
Abstract Fluid Power systems design is a skilful and complex task requiring significant practical experience and heuristic knowledge gained over many years. With few formal Fluid Power design courses being taught in further and higher education, both academia and industry are seeking new methods of delivering this specialist knowledge. The Internet opens up low-cost, low-risk training opportunities for companies, particularly Small-to-Medium Enterprises, which may not be able to afford to send their staff on residential courses, and also for employees seeking career development within the context of lifelong learning. This paper describes the early stages of a project to develop an open, domain-independent, Java-based framework for the delivery of multimedia training. This framework forms part of an overall Performance Support System for trainees and professionals involved in Fluid Power systems design. Also described is a formative evaluation of the framework.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Tall, multistory, buildings are becoming increasingly popular in large cities as a result of growing urbanization trends (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs 2018). As cities continue to grow, many of them along the coasts of continents which are prone to natural hazards, the performance of tall, flexible buildings when subjected to natural hazards is a pressing issue with engineering relevance. The performance of structures when subjected to dynamic loads can be enhanced with various response modification strategies which have been traditionally achieved with added stiffness, flexibility, damping and strength (Kelly et al. 1972; Skinner et al. 1973, 1974; Clough and Penzien 1975; Zhang et al. 1989; Aiken 1990; Whittaker et al. 1991; Makris et al. 1993a,b; Skinner et al. 1993; Inaudi and Makris 1996; Kelly 1997; Soong and Dargush 1997; Constantinou et al. 1998; Makris and Chang 2000a; Chang and Makris 2000; Black et al. 2002, 2003; Symans et al. 2008; Sarlis et al. 2013; Tena-Colunga 1997). Together with the elastic spring that produces a force proportional to the relative displacement of its end-nodes and the viscous dashpot that produces a force proportional to the relative velocity of its end-nodes; the inerter produces a force proportional to the relative acceleration of its end-nodes and emerges as the third elementary mechanical element (in addition to the spring and dashpot) capable for modifying structural response. Accordingly, in this report we examine the seismic performance of multistory and seismically isolated structures when equipped with inerters. In view that the inerter emerges as the third elementary mechanical element for the synthesis of mechanical networks, in Chapter 2 we derive the basic frequency- and time-response functions of the inerter together with these of the two-parameter inertoelastic and inertoviscous mechanical networks. Chapter 3 examines the response of a two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) structure where the first story is equipped with inerters. Both cases of a stiff and a compliant support of the inerters are examined. The case of two parallel clutching inerters is investigated and the study concludes that as the compliance of the frame that supports the inerters increases, the use of a single inerter offers more favorable response other than increasing the force transferred to the support frame. Chapter 4 examines the seismic response analysis of the classical two-degree-of-freedom isolated structure with supplemental rotational inertia (inerter) in its isolation system. The analysis shows that for the “critical” amount of rotational inertia which eliminates the participation of the second mode, the effect of this elimination is marginal on the structural response since the participation of the second mode is invariably small even when isolation systems without inerters are used. Our study, upon showing that the reaction force at the support of the inerter is appreciable, proceeds with a non-linear response analysis that implements a state-space formulation which accounts for the bilinear behavior of practical isolation system (single concave sliding bearings or lead-rubber bearings) in association with the compliance of the support of the inerter. Our study concludes that supplemental rotational inertia aggravates the displacement and acceleration response of the elastic superstructure and as a result, for larger isolation periods (Tb &gt; 2.5s) the use of inerters in isolation systems is not recommended. Chapter 5 first examines the response analysis of a SDOF elastoplastic and bilinear structure and reveals that when the yielding structure is equipped with supplemental rotational inertia, the equal- displacement rule is valid starting from lower values of the pre-yielding period given that the presence of inerters lengthens the apparent pre-yielding period. The analysis concludes that sup- plemental rotational inertia emerges as an attractive response modification strategy for elastoplastic and bilinear SDOF structures with pre-yielding periods up to T1 = 1.5sec. For larger pre-yielding periods (say T1 &gt; 2.0sec), the effectiveness of inerters to suppress the inelastic response of 2DOF yielding structures reduces; and for very flexible first stories; as in the case of isolated structures examined in chapter 4, the use of inerter at the first level (isolation system) is not recommended. Finally, chapter 6 shows that, in spite of the reduced role of inerters when placed at floor levels other than the first level (they no-longer suppress the induced ground acceleration nor they can eliminate the participation of higher modes), they still manifest a unique role since it is not possible to replace a structure with solitary inerters at higher levels with an equivalent traditional structure without inerters.
