Abstract:
Fifty-one dogs treated for mandibular osteosarcomas (OSs) were studied retrospectively. Treatments were partial mandibulectomy (n = 32); partial mandibulectomy and chemotherapy (n = 10); partial mandibulectomy and radiation therapy (n = 3); partial mandibulectomy, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy (n = 4); and radiation therapy alone (n = 2). The overall one-year survival rate was 59.3%. Dogs treated with surgery alone had a one-year survival rate of 71%, which is higher than the one-year survival rate for dogs with appendicular OSs treated with surgery alone (p of 0.001 or less; hazard ratio of 0.29). There was no apparent effect of various treatment modalities, nor institution where treatment was given, nor histological type. Histological score and, to a lesser extent, histological grade were predictive of survival outcome.

Abstract:
The experience of Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN) in Tayside over the last 13 years has been reviewed with particular reference to the indications for, complications of, and quality of life whilst receiving HPN. The observed complication rate has been compared with that of the UK experience, and the observed complication rate for the first seven years of HPN experience has been compared with the subsequent six years. The Tayside experience equates broadly with that of the UK, although there was a different pattern of complications. Increasing experience with HPN has resulted in a fall in HPN related complications to 1 per 3.4 treatment years in Tayside, a rate as low as that of the most experienced HPN centre in the UK.

L'histoire des relations entre l'Europe et les Etats-Unis commence au 16e siècle, avant même la fondation des Etats-Unis avec le peuplement de l'Amérique du Nord par une immigration en provenance d'Europe, et notamment des îles britanniques. C'est pour cette raison que l'on a pu dire que les Etat-Unis sont les filles de l'Europe. Ce constat a pour corollaire le fait que les deux entités s'identifient par les origines et des valeurs communes qui sont le respect de la personne humaine et la pratique du système démocratique. Mais, le fait d'appartenir à la même orbite civilisatrice n'a pas forcément permis des échanges puisque l'on sait que la politique américaine a été marquée dans le passé par un fort courant isolationniste qui interdisait aux américains de se mêler des querelles et des conflits en Europe. C'est l'idée même de la doctrine Monroe qui spécifiait aux américains de limiter leurs ambitions à leur propre continent. L'immixtion des Etats-Unis dans la Grande Guerre rompt temporairement l'isolationnisme américain. . .

La présente thèse, qui a pour thème la désagrégation de la fédération yougoslave durant la période critique allant de 1988 à 1992, s’attache à faire le point sur les connaissances actuelles du sujet. La dissolution violente de la Yougoslavie nécessite une mise en perspective historique afin de mieux comprendre les problématiques de l’époque et les rôles de chacun des acteurs, nationaux comme internationaux. Dans la mesure où les conséquences du conflit s’inscrivent encore pleinement dans l’actualité, les controverses comme les tentatives d’instrumentalisation politique d’un tel sujet sont nombreuses. Nous avons néanmoins oeuvré à livrer une analyse dépassionnée et une lecture scientifique du drame yougoslave. L'approche volontairement pluridisciplinaire offre la possibilité d'appréhender les interactions politiques, économiques et sociales et de cerner dans sa globalité un sujet éminemment complexe
This research, which deals with the dissolution of the Yugoslav Federation during the critical years 1988-1992, aims at reviewing the current state of information on the subject. The violent collapse of Yugoslavia needs to be put into context in order to understand the issues at stake at the time and the roles of the various national, as well as international, stakeholders. As the consequences of the conflict can still be felt today, this topic is a controversial one and there have been many interpretations that were simply given to serve political purposes. On the contrary, this is an attempt to analyse the Yugoslav tragedy from an objective and scientific perspective. A multidisciplinary approach has deliberately been applied so as to take into account the various political, economic and social interactions that led to the conflict so as to fully cover such a highly complex topic as this

PART ONE situates sacred elements in their historical an musical context between 1980 and 1992. Chapter I deals with the sacred heritage of the Judeo-Christian tradition, the cultural base of our analysis. The United States faces a continuing need to conduct interagency operations, especially between the military and USAID. Surprisingly, however, this field has been treated much too casually in light of its merits as a potential force multiplier-and as a source of serious operational problems. US leaders will continue to choose the interagency approach (over unilateral options) to solve the sorts of complex problems that demand action and systematic intervention, yet allow room for political maneuver. By studying the activities of two inherently adversarial bureaucracies (USAID and the USMWGP) which needed to work together to solve a complex counterinsurgency problem in El Salvador, I have been able to determine which factors are most important for unity of effort in future interagency operations. In El Salvador the mission was to combat insurgents, but the principles and many of the tasks required to succeed then and there, apply today and elsewhere in waging the wars against drugs, terror, and other post- Cold War security threats

Abstract:
Since 1978, China has been one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Notable features of its economic performance have been its industrial growth and the expansion of its manufactured exports. The focus of this research is China's industrial performance during the years 1980 and 1992. Its principal objective is to analyze Industrial growth from the twin perspectives of resource mobilisation and productivity change. It is argued that these two aspects, both of which reflect the impact of Dengist reforms, are interrelated.;Our analysis of resource mobilisation suggests that a number of factors have contributed to China's rapid industrial growth. Two of these have been of particular importance. First, increased emphasis on the role of the market, in terms of facilitating more rapid growth of household demand and strengthening intersectoral linkages, enabled the Industrial sector to improve its access to widening domestic and foreign markets. Second, the transformation of funding arrangements for industry had two beneficial results: it permitted non-state agents to play a greater role in financing industrial expansion; and it enabled the traditional state funding system to enhance its role as a means of improving intersectoral balance.;The analysis of productivity change in post-reform industry is deliberately set in the context of the changes in market structures which have faced China's industrial enterprises. Our findings indicate that enterprise reforms and structural adjustments have been a source of improvement in levels of industrial productivity in China. But they also suggest that such improvements have been neither consistent, nor balanced over time and between different branches of Industry.;In an attempt to identify the forces which have given rise to the distinctive patterns of resource mobilisation and productivity change in China's industrial sector under the Impact of reform, we have deliberately focused on the interactions between government, enterprises and the market. It is noteworthy that the increased role played by regional and local governments has facilitated the more intensive use of local productive resources. But it is also clear that the same factor has been the source of regional market fragmentation. Both of these elements have impacted on China's industrial performance since the early 1980s.

Size is one of the most controversial influencing factors in the diffusion literature. Some authors argue that large firms have several advantages over smaller firms in the adoption of an innovation (Brown 1981), while others argue that diffusion of innovation in small firms is quicker than in large firms because of the advantages associated with small size (Acs & Audretsh, 1988; Julien, 1993; Lefebvre & Le-febvre, 1993; Riding, 1993). However, the controversy on the impact of size on diffusion of innovation has been further complicated by the mixed results of the studies investigating the relationship between size as an influential factor and diffusion of innovation (Aiken, et al., 1980; Blau & McKinley, 1979; Booth & Giacobbe, 1998; Damanpour, 1992; Dewar & Dutton, 1986; Hage, 1980; Krumwiede, 1998; Libby & Waterhouse, 1996). Shedding light on this controversy, this paper examines the relationship between business size and the diffusion of both technological innovation and activity based costing (ABC) through a longitudinal study in a single industry.

Abstract:
The presence of a relation between saving and investment which has been debated in the empirical literature following the pioneering of Feldstein-Horioka (1980) is paramount to the determination of economic policies. Feldstein-Horioka (1980) stated that the relationship between saving and investment depends on the degree of international capital mobility. A high correlation between saving and investment is often taken as evidence of capital immobility. The purpose of this study is to empirically test the validity of the Feldstein-Horioka puzzle. The model developed within the context of the theoretical framework was estimated by means of panel ARDL (auto-regressive distributed lag bound test) approach which is a panel vector error correction method using the data for Eurasian economics for the period 1992-2011. The data is taken from World Development Indicators. The short-run analysis supports the Feldstein-Horioko hypothesis and captured from error correction model (ECM). The results of the bounds test suggest that there is a long run relationship between savings and investment. Therefore, the Feldstein–Horioko correlations are not a puzzle for our sample because of the low correlation and high capital mobility.

Abstract:
In the late 1970’s, due to increasing electric energy costs and the potential for power interruption at Solar Turbines Incorporated’s Harbor Drive manufacturing facility, management evaluated several self-generating options available at the time. With large fluctuating loads and a very limited need for thermal energy, the appropriate solution was determined to be peak shaving. In 1980, a 2.5-MW dual fuel industrial gas turbine generator set was installed. Its intended operating cycle was during on-peak billing periods, 5 days a week throughout the year. Through August 31, 1993, the system has accumulated 22,743 hours of use and 3879 starts. Its overall start reliability has been 99.9% with an availability of 98.2%. Payback on the installation was in 4.2 years. It has continued to generate savings since installation, with net savings for 1992 alone exceeding $470,000. This paper highlights the key aspects of the economic methodology justifying installation of the peak shaving system, operating procedures, maintenance practices and system modifications put in place over the life of the installation.

Abstract:
Pesticides are used in intensive farming to help fight plant pests and diseases (insecticides, fungicides), kill weeds (herbicides), as well as accelerate the growth of seeds (defoliants), but until 1992 pesticides were kept in improperly equipped warehouses, there was no maintenance or accounting of the pesticides. Consequently, the environment of the warehouse was often polluted. Such sources of pollution are hazardous to the environment. Economic activities in the area have been carried out from 1980 to 1994. Various agricultural chemicals have been stored and used there. Later, in 1997, chemicals (fertilizers and plant protection chemicals) stored in the territory of the warehouse have been collected and removed from the territory. During the inventory of 2009, no chemical substances were found in the territory. In 2010, an investigation carried out in the territory of the pesticide warehouse revealed unacceptable levels of pollution in the soil and the groundwater by pesticides and other toxic and neutral chemicals. In 2012, the polluted territory was cleaned eliminating the remains of buildings, and removing the soil polluted by the pesticides. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of the territory of the former pesticide warehouse in Kaunas District Municipality, Bubių Village on the groundwater during the period from 2012 to 2016. The results have shown that the groundwater is mostly polluted with nitrogen compounds, as well as the tendency in increase of chlorides, sodium, and calcium. Minimum and unchanging concentrations of the pesticides (DDD, DDE, DDT) were determined throughout the investigation.

Abstract:
GEOTRACK is a software for track structure analysis under vertical quasi-dynamic loads. It uses a three dimensional, multilayer elastic model for determining track and subgrade responses. Originally developed by Chang et al. in 1980, GEOTRACK has been validated by several studies to closely match the elastic response of railroad tracks in operation. GEOTRACK can be used to calculate different track response values in the superstructure as well as substructure. The most recent version of GEOTRACK, GEOTRACK for Windows, was developed in 1992 at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. However, the source code for this executable version was lost before the software rights were acquired by the Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI). Accordingly, the current executable version, which only runs on 32-bit Windows operating systems, cannot be upgraded. The source code currently available to TTCI does not correspond to the current executable version of GEOTRACK, and was written in the VAX FORTRAN language, making it incompatible with modern compilers and operating systems. Considering the widespread need for GEOTRACK by researchers and practitioners in the railroad industry, a research collaboration was recently initiated between Boise State University and TTCI to develop a new upgraded version of the GETORACK program. This paper will present preliminary results from this developmental effort, and will introduce different features being incorporated into the new version. Developed using the C#.net platform, the new program features an intuitive Graphical User Interface (GUI) with enhanced pre- and post-processing capabilities. Fundamental approach behind railroad track analysis using the multilayer elastic theory is presented in this paper along with basic analysis framework being used in the newly developed program.

Abstract The Studsvik site was originally a research facility with many different activities going on. During the years some of the work was ended and the buildings and facilities were free released and some of them torn down. Three research reactors, one in Stockholm and two in Studsvik, have been decommissioned and their sites have been released for unrestricted use. The waste produced was included in the Studsvik waste management system. There are today ongoing decommissioning projects in Studsvik. One is the dismantling and free release of the old Active Central Laboratory, ACL, together with its ventilation building, ACF, another project is the decommissioning of the old evaporator facility. A recently completed project is the decommissioning of the Van de Graaff accelerator building in Studsvik. The Van de Graaff accelerator was in use from 1962 to 1989. During 1990–1997 work was performed in the building with the aim to clean-up the building and to radiologically map the building including sampling and decontamination for free release. In 1998 a permit for decommissioning of the free released building was given from SSI and during 1999 the building itself was demolished. Free release of metals have been carried out at Studsvik since 1987 and up to date 5700 tonnes have been melted of which 5000 tonnes have been free released. The aim of melting low-level scrap metals from the nuclear industry is to safely determine the radioactive content of the metals before the material is released for unrestricted reuse. Melting services are performed as a part of the decommissioning of the nuclear power plant Würgassen in Germany. Decontamination for decommissioning, melting and free release of the material has been performed on two steam generators from the shutdown Ågesta PHWR. The project was performed in 1992–93 and has been reported earlier. Studsvik has worked with decommissioning and free release since the 1980’ies. This paper gives some examples on different projects performed during these years. The paper also describes the procedures on how to release both buildings and material from regulatory control as well as pre-treatment method introduced in order to minimise the waste needed to be put into final storage.

Conference topics: City transformations.It is inevitable to be disappointed when we consciously compare today’s city with yesterday’s. Territorial occupancy was an arduous task which confronted man and nature. It was a collective act, the cultural manifestation of a society that aspired to artistically represent itself in the cities it built, both in buildings and public spaces. The city of the past, so conceived, successfully raised through time, and even today we can appreciate, in the human affection it brings about, the plastic value of its buildings and the ambient quality of its public spaces. Currently the contemporary city is just incapable of meeting a profound spiritual demand if it does not pursues a practical goal. In the Ensanche, one of its most renowned examples, the idea of the city imposes a restriction to the artistic or monumental value of the historic city in favour of a technical efficiency that facilitates the economic and administrative management of the new city. The unidentified reticular mesh so characteristic of the urban morphology of the Ensanche evinces the distortion of the hippodamian model which in past ages and also throughout time probed its validity to provide magnificent examples of cities thought and built also from artistic principles. In the late example of the 2nd Ensanche of Pamplona, we attend to the solitary labour of an architect such as Victor Eusa Razquin, who knew how to transform with his buildings the “technical” uniformity of the Ensanche by transforming, qualifying and enriching it with the incrustation of architectural episodes of elevated artistic value. Abstract An extensive analysis of the contact phenomenon occuring between a roller chain and sprocket was given by Binder in 1956. Naji and Marshek complemented Binder’s work by presenting a theoretical and experimental investigation of the contact phenomenon under quasi-static conditions during the early 1980’s. The problem is very complex, and significantly complicated due to the non-trivial geometry of the sprocket tooth, manufacturing tolerances, and changes in clearances between components due to wear. Accordingly, several simplifying assumptions were necessary in the previous investigations. In this paper, a more detailed model of the quasi-static contact phenomenon is developed from first principles. The new model includes the external loading conditions, the curvature difference between the roller and the seating curve, the net error in the chain pitch (defined as the error in the chain pitch minus the error in the sprocket pitch), and Coulomb friction between the tooth and roller, the roller and bushing, and the bushing and pin. No assumption regarding the pressure angle at each contact point is made — rather the pressure angle at each contact point is calculated during the solution. (This is a very significant difference between the present and previous analyses). An efficient strategy for the computation is outlined. In a companion paper (“Mechanics of Roller Chain - Sprocket Contact: Observations About the Contact Phenomenon and Load Distribution” submitted for presentation at this conference), results generated by the new model are presented and discussed. A comparison with experimental data taken from the literature (Naji and Marshek, 1983) indicates that excellent quantitative prediction of load distribution is possible. Finally, practical observations about chain performance (including effects of manufacturing tolerance and wear, and guidelines for incorporation of idler sprockets) are presented.
