Abstract:
Analyzing the development of the consequences of voluntary job changes in Germany between 1985 and 2013, the study focuses on income gains and job satisfaction increases. Drawing on arguments of the job-search literature on the one hand and the proliferation of choices on the other we investigate whether the returns of job changes have increased or decreased. Results show that income gains have decreased over time while the job satisfaction surplus has remained stable. We further conclude that in determining the outcomes of job changes over time, structural factors seem to be more important than individual ones.

Abstract:
The status of women in Taiwan has undergone a significant transformation since the feminist movement in the early 1970s, which was founded by ex-vice president of Taiwan Hsiu-Lien Lu. Women in current Taiwanese society have the right to equality in education as well as employment, unlike women in the 1970s. The thesis explores how new feminist culture has influenced the representation of women in Taiwanese film and television drama. It focuses on an examination of gender in relation to the representation of women in Taiwanese film and television drama from 1985 to 2013. The main body of the thesis is taken up with an analysis of the representation of women in selected Taiwanese films and television dramas, for instance The Fierce Wife: Woman Onerous: Seeking Mr. Right (Pei Hua Wang, 2012) and The Fierce Wife (Fun Jun Xu, 2010). The thesis discusses how new feminism has influenced Taiwanese popular culture through films and television dramas, and how these films and television dramas treat the central themes of marriage, love and the role of women. The thesis also discusses female authorship and films directed by women through an examination of Sylvia Chang’s films, for instance 20, 30, 40 (2004). The thesis further explores the representation of women in conjunction with a feminist discussion of the power and function of these narrative structures in constructing female identities.

Bernhoff, Arthur. "Strength in a weakened state : interpreting Hizb’allah's experiences as a social movement and governing coalition in Lebanon 1985-2013." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6729.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates Hizb'allah's successful but competing dual development as an extra-institutional Shi'a social movement and an institutional political party. Hizb'allah has traditionally been studied from the perspective of one of its many natures, such as a social movement, Islamic movement, resistance, or political party, each perspective bringing with it limitations and differing interpretations of its identity, motivations, and success. The motivation behind this research was to seek an interpretation of the movement's development and success that would encompass these multiple natures. Through an interpretation of social movement ‘life-cycles', a social movement ‘development model' is proposed that accounts for contradicting theories on the ‘success' of social movements, interpreting success instead as an ability to exhibit simultaneous institutional and extra-institutional natures. The hypothesis provided in this work is that it is an ability to simultaneously exhibit institutional and extra-institutional natures that can be a source of strength and success for a movement, drawing capital from both while avoiding accountability that typically accompanies institutional politics. This challenges traditional theoretical approaches in terms of linear life-cycles with few paths for the social movement to choose from. In turn, questions arise regarding notions of social movement life-cycles being uni-directional, continuously progressing towards ‘institutionalization' or demise. Ideas of an ‘end-date' or ‘inevitable outcome' of social movements are also confronted. This interdisciplinary study is conducted by means of media, archival, and empirical research (participant observation, interviews, and surveys), focusing on changing constituent perceptions of the movement between 1985 and 2013. It is also argued that Hizb'allah's strength is its ability to draw from both extra-institutional and institutional resources while simultaneously avoiding accountability. However, it was also found that, by forming the 2011 governing coalition, the movement upset this balance by subjecting itself to accountability inherent in governance, in turn leading to ‘schizophrenic behaviour' as Hizb'allah sought to serve conflicting constituent and state interests. The significance of this research is that it not only provides an explanation for Hizb'allah's success, but also provides an interpretation of social movement development that accounts for multi-natured movements.

Find full text
Abstract:
Orientador: Prof. Dr. João Manoel Losada Moreira<br>Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal do ABC. The residential electricity consumption in Brazil increased 64 % between 2003 and 2013 while the total electricity consumption in the country increased 51 %. The electric intensity of households, defined as the ratio of household consumption of electricity and the final consumption of households fell 12% during the study period, and the electricity tariff fell 18 %. In this work we study the residential electricity consumption behavior in terms of actual final consumption of household, number of households and electricity tariff. Two techniques were used for the analysis of electricity consumption: a) time-series analysis for regressions of electricity consumption in terms of explanatory variables. The validity of the regression was verified by unit root test and cointegration test; b) LMDI decomposition technique ("logarithmic mean weight dividing method"). The results of linear regression provided elasticities that allow us to evaluate and manage the long-term consumption of electricity. The values obtained for the elasticities for the period 1985-2013 were 0.97 for the number of households, 0.35 to actual final consumption of household and -0.32 for the electricity tariff. The results show that electricity consumption has more sensitivity to changes in the variable number of households, that is, the increasing number of households in the country is primarily responsible for the increase in residential electricity consumption. The explanatory variables consumption of household and electricity tariff varied over the analyzed period while the number of households presented a uniform growth. The electricity tariff may be used to manage the residential electricity demand. For reducing residential electricity consumption, its growth rate should be higher than that of the consumer spending because their elasticity¿s are very close, but of opposite signs. From the decomposition by LMDI technique, it obtained the contribution of each explanatory variable in electricity consumption, confirming this technique useful to know and analyze the factors on which electricity decomposes, and not as projection technique electricity consumption.

Knott, C. S. "Investigating the relationship between alcohol consumption and type 2 diabetes : a longitudinal analysis of the Whitehall II cohort, 1985-2013." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2016. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1528656/.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have reported a J-shaped association between the volume of alcohol consumption and incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), a number of limitations weaken the validity of such findings. This thesis aims to systematically explore the effect of key methodological shortcomings. METHODS: Analyses were undertaken using Whitehall II data from 1985-2013. To examine the degree to which conventional survival analyses might be subject to misclassification error due to the use of a single baseline measure of drinking status, mixed effects models were used to plot the trajectory of alcohol intake according to baseline categories of consumption. Mixed effects models were also stratified by diagnosis status to shed light upon whether increases or decreases in risk are likely to accrue gradually over the life course or occur as a consequence of differences in intake specific to periods of heightened biological sensitivity. Finally, given changes in alcohol consumption across the life course, increasingly complex survival models were used to explore the relationship between different dimensions of the longitudinal trajectory and T2DM risk. RESULTS: Alcohol consumption within categories of baseline drinking converged over the adult life course toward moderate volumes, with moderate drinkers increasingly contaminated by participants defined at baseline as heavy or infrequent drinkers. Men who developed T2DM were found to increase their consumption up to their date of diagnosis, while drinking among women remained relatively stable up to diagnosis. Marked decreases in consumption were evident among both sexes following diagnosis. Reductions in the risk of T2DM were specific to or most pronounced among female current drinkers in middle age, with drinking in later life associated with an increased risk regardless of sex, after adjustment for prior consumption. CONCLUSIONS: Variations in alcohol consumption across the adult life course highlight the importance of considering drinking histories when defining alcohol consumption categories, with the risk of misclassification error appearing to increase with age. Although reductions in the risk of T2DM were most pronounced among middle-aged women, evidence concerning the determinants of such a sex-specific disparity is lacking. That risks are heightened in older age suggest that any benefits from drinking earlier in the life course may be countered by age-related deteriorations to the alcohol metabolism.

Abstract:
Consequentemente, a política florestal perdeu força. The general objective of the research was to understand the trajectory of the degree of autonomy of the bureaucracy of the Forestry Sector in the formulation of the forest public policy of the State of Paraná (1985-2013). We identify specifically critical periods in the development of forest policy in Paraná, raise power resources and capabilities of the bureaucracy and finally analyze the role of technicians in the formulation of forest policy of the State of Paraná. In the attempt to achieve these goals, we rely on the historical perspective and the qualitative method. This led us to a level of depth and detail necessary and desired to explore and describe the phenomenon of political bureaucracy in Paraná. As regards the theoretical perspective, we were guided by theoretical contributions on public bureaucracy. At least part of this theoretical framework argues that the public bureaucracy operates politically in the decision-making processes, thus going beyond its traditional role as enforcer of public policy. In order to enhance our analysis we also adopted two concepts of Historical Institutional Theory, called critical junctures and trajectory dependency, which allowed the observation of the historical evolution of the forest policy of the State. Six interviews with career coaches of the Environmental Institute of Paraná (IAP) between mid-2013 and early 2014, all in the city of Curitiba / Parana, were performed. In addition, we conducted hemerographic and documentary research. The investigative process resulted in two periods between 1985 and 2013 in which the technicians used varying degrees of autonomy in the formulation of the forest policy. Between 1985 and 2003, technicians experienced higher levels of freedom in the political process, because of their strength as a group. In this period, the bureaucracy has grown in size and enriched in technical knowledge. This allowed the bureaucracy to use especially its capacities to occupy important positions, promote strategic alliances and raise and generate funds. Immediately thereafter (2003-2013) , the bureaucracy of Forestry Sector experienced a moment of weakness. The number of technicians fell sharply, the generation of revenue stagnated, expenses increased, the number of politicians in the body grew and the number of technical positions in important environmental administration was reduced. Consequently, forest policy weakened. Finally, this study showed that moments of higher bureaucratic autonomy in the formulation of Paraná forest policy were experienced when, simultaneously, the bureaucracy of the Forestry Sector stood strengthened (power resources and capabilities), when institutions (especially NGOs and environmental movements and the business sector) were able to pressure the State, demanding more consistent environmental policies and, finally, when the State had a ruler interested in the environmental area and willing to solve environmental problems experienced in that historical moment.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Mohammed Fairouz’s Annabel Lee (2013). It requires daring to set such a famous poem by Edgar Allan Poe, but Fairouz finds a vein of unaffected, forthright clarity, easily averting suspicions of naïvety by shifting key centres, keeping piano parts varied, and paying careful attention to the singer’s rhythms, notating them to match the subtlest details of enunciation. The work will suit a youthful baritone with a secure upper range and good control of vibrato. Skill and discipline are needed to keep syllables evenly weighted and perfectly timed, so that each has a clear kernel of resonance and successions of notes do not tumble ahead. The anguished, dramatic heart of the piece requires strong projection, but the singer also needs to be able to hold and control suppressed emotion for the quieter, framing verses.

Noguchi, Mary Goebel. "The Shifting Sub-Text of Japanese Gendered Language." In GLOCAL Conference on Asian Linguistic Anthropology 2020. The GLOCAL Unit, SOAS University of London, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.47298/cala2020.12-2.

Full text
Abstract:
Sociolinguists (Holmes 2008; Meyerhof 2006) assists to describe the Japanese language a having gender exclusive elements. Personal pronouns, sentence-ending particles and lexicon used exclusively by one gender have been cataloged in English by researchers such as Ide (1979), Shibamoto (1985) and McGloin (1991). While there has been some research showing that Japanese women’s language use today is much more diverse than these earlier descriptions suggested (e.g. studies in Okamoto and Smith 2004) and that some young Japanese girls use masculine pronouns to refer to themselves (Miyazaki 2010), prescriptive rules for Japanese use still maintain gender-exclusive elements. In addition, characters in movie and TV dramas not only adhere to but also popularize these norms (Nakamura 2012). Thus, Japanese etiquette and media ‘texts’ promote the perpetuation of gender-exclusive language use, particularly by females. However, in the past three decades, Japanese society has made significant shifts towards gender equality in legal code, the workplace and education. The researcher therefore decided to investigate how Japanese women use and view their language in the context of these changes. Data comes from three focus groups. The first was conducted in 2013 and was composed of older women members of a university human rights research group focused on gender issues. The other two were conducted in 2013 and 2019, and were composed of female university students who went through the Japanese school system after the Japan Teachers’ Union adopted a policy of gender equality, thus expressing interest in gender issues. The goal was to determine whether Japanese women’s language use is shifting over time. The participants’ feelings about these norms were also explored - especially whether or not they feel that the norms constrain their ability to express themselves fully. Although the new norms are not yet evident in most public contexts, the language use and views of the participants in this study represent the sub-text of this shift in Japanese usage.

Muldoon, Thomas R., Bob Cashner, and Sara Vestfals. "High Pressure Feedwater Heater Cup Forging Alteration." In ASME 2014 Power Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/power2014-32217.

Full text
Abstract:
American Exchanger Services, Inc (AM-EX) performed a 2012 repair of a vertical head-up High Pressure (HP) Feedwater Heater breech lock channel during a shop based re-tube for the American Electric Power (AEP) Wilkes Power Plant, Unit 1. The 48 year old channel is a carbon steel cup-forging that had 1-1/2″ deep circumferential cracks extending radially into the tight knuckle radius at the channel barrel to tubesheet junction. A small area was also found on the backside of the tubesheet which had corroded to a depth of 7/16″. Several methods to repair these types of failures may be employed, such as grinding out the crack and weld repair, grinding or machining out the crack, leaving as is and performing regular inspections and monitoring crack propagation, or leave as is and perform a fitness for service analysis (API 579-1/ASME FFS-1). A repair was chosen that reduced the stresses in the highly stressed corner radius and was validated using modern calculations. The channel barrel was in the re-tube process so immediate access to a vertical lathe was available and this, in part, lead to the crack removal approach. The design alteration was to machine a pocket to completely remove the crack, verify tubesheet stresses are within allowable stress limits by Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and prescribe future Nondestructive Examination (NDE) to monitor potential future cracking. The size of the machined “pocket” was determined by the actual crack length “as measured” and the repair was verified using FEA. The machined pocket was Dye Penetrant Tested (PT) in September of 2013 (after approximately one year of returning to service), and no defects were noted. This is not a new repair method; in fact it was researched by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in 1988 symposium [1], and based on an EPRI 1985 [2] similar repair. In the 1985 repair similar methods of FEA were employed, however using less sophisticated forms of the calculation. Modern computing allows for 3D analysis with more complex geometries, and more conservative meshing. This analysis demonstrates that the earlier papers were correct in their understanding of the problem and the proposed solutions. The Wilkes HP feedwater heater was repaired in a similar manner with a machined radius that sufficiently reduced stresses to safe levels allowing an alteration of the vessel to be in compliance with National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) [3] and American Society of Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME B&amp;PV CODE) [4].

In 2014 22nd International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone22-30743.

Full text
Abstract:
AREVA has developed a new leading edge code suite to meet the challenges arising from increasing expectations in nuclear power plant availability and fuel performance while satisfying stricter safety requirements. ARCADIA™ [1] is an advanced 3D coupled neutronics/thermal-hydraulics/thermal-mechanics code system for Light Water Reactor (LWR) fuel assembly and core design calculations as well as safety analysis, using a new software architecture allowing for nodal and pin-by-pin calculation capability. ARCADIA™ was licensed by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for applications for PWR UO2 cores in 2013. It is on the way to be licensed in other countries for AREVA customers. ARCADIA™ contains the steady-state and transient core-simulator ARTEMIS™ [2] for core design and coupled transient safety analysis. ARTEMIS™ can be used in a coupled mode with S-RELAP5 and CATHARE 2 to allow fully coupled transient analysis, combining the sophisticated 3D core model of ARTEMIS™ with the proven system thermal-hydraulics of S-RELAP5 and CATHARE 2 including a detailed simulation of the Instrumentation and Control (I&amp;C). This allows simulating complex transients affecting the core as well as the primary and secondary side including I&amp;C signals and responses. For the validation of ARTEMIS™ a comprehensive set of validation cases was selected, including international benchmarks and measurements covering various classes of transients. These cases include a ‘Load Rejection to station service’ event at a German 1300 MWe plant, where a wide range of system and core parameters was measured that allow the validation of the fully coupled code system. Another validation case is a nodal recalculation of the core behavior during the pump shaft break transient that occurred in the Gösgen nuclear power plant in 1985 [3]. The paper will provide representative example results for the abovementioned validation cases.
