Abstract:

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic progressive polygenic autoimmune disease with a high socio-economic burden. Genetic polymorphisms expressed as a shared epitope (SE) at hypervariable regions of HLA-DRB1*01/*04/*10/*14 and linkage disequilibriums of HLA-DRB1*-HLA-DQB1* with some microorganisms, increase the risk of RA. Shared epitopes are also related with the increase of serum IgM-RF as well. A cross-sectional study on 48 RA patients diagnosed by ACR Criteria 1987 from 6 hospitals in Java and Bali was done to determine the associations of HLA-DRB1* and HLA-DQB1* alleles with serum IgM-RF levels. The presence of HLA-DRB1* and HLA-DQB1* alleles were assessed through PCR-SSO. Serum IgM-RF levels (IU/mL) were assessed through ELISA. Man-Whitney U tests were used to measure the associations. Value of p<0.05 is considered to be statistically significant. The results showed that mean ranks IgM-RF levels of subjects who are bearing HLA-DRB1*04 compared to subjects who are not bearing HLA-DRB1*04 were 34.10 IU/ml (n=10) vs 21.97 IU/ml (n=38), p=0.014. While, the mean ranks of IgM-RF levels of subjects who are bearing haplotype combination of HLA-DRB1*04-HLA-DQB1*03 vs subjects who are not bearing haplotype combination of HLA-DRB1*04- HLA-DQB1*03 were 32.89 IU/mL (n=9) vs 22.56 IU/mL (n=39) (p=0.046). It is concluded that there are association of HLA-DRB1*04, and haplotype combination of HLA-DRB1*04-HLA-DQB1*03 with increased levels of IgM-RF among Indonesians with RA.

Abstract:

Ailton Krenak é líder indígena, ambientalista e escritor. Nasceu em 1953 no estado de Minas Gerais, na região do Médio Rio Doce. Aos dezessete anos de idade, mudou-se com sua família para o estado do Paraná, onde se alfabetizou e se tornou produtor gráfico e jornalista. Na década de 1980, passou a dedicar-se exclusivamente ao movimento indígena. Em 1985, fundou a organização não governamental Núcleo de Cultura Indígena, que visa promover a cultura indígena. Foi durante a Assembleia Constituinte, em 1987, que Ailton protagonizou uma das cenas mais marcantes da mesma: em discurso na tribuna, vestido com um terno branco, pintou o rosto com tinta preta para protestar contra o que considerava um retrocesso na luta pelos direitos indígenas. Em 1988, participou da fundação da União dos Povos Indígenas, organização que busca representar os interesses indígenas no cenário nacional. Em 1989, participou da Aliança dos Povos da Floresta, movimento que busca o estabelecimento de reservas naturais na Amazônia onde fosse possível a subsistência econômica através da extração do látex da seringueira, bem como da coleta de outros produtos da floresta. Retornou a Minas Gerais, onde passou a se dedicar ao Núcleo de Cultura Indígena. Desde 1998, a organização realiza, na região da Serra do Cipó, em Minas Gerais, um festival idealizado por Ailton: o Festival de Dança e Cultura Indígena, promovendo a integração entre as diferentes populações indígenas. Abstract:

AbstractMass-balance and dynamic behaviour of Chhota Shigri glacier, western Himalaya, India, has been investigated between 2002 and 2010 and compared to data collected in 1987-89. During the period 2002-10, the glacier experienced a negative glacier-wide mass balance of -0.67 ± 0.40 m w.e. a-1. Between 2003 and 2010, elevation and ice-flow velocities slowly decreased in the ablation area, leading to a 24-37% reduction in ice fluxes, an expected response of the glacier dynamics to its recent negative mass balances. The reduced ice fluxes are still far larger than the balance fluxes calculated from the 2002-10 average surface mass balances. Therefore, further slowdown, thinning and terminus retreat of Chhota Shigri glacier are expected over the next few years. Conversely, the 2003/04 ice fluxes are in good agreement with ice fluxes calculated assuming that the glacier-wide mass balance is zero. Given the limited velocity change between 1987−89 and 2003/04 and the small terminus change between 1988 and 2010, we suggest that the glacier has experienced a period of near-zero or slightly positive mass balance in the 1990s, before shifting to a strong imbalance in the 21st century. This result challenges the generally accepted idea that glaciers in the Western Himalaya have been shrinking rapidly for the last few decades.

Abstract:

We examine the relationship between price and volume in the Brazilian stock market. It tests the “V-shaped relationship” developed by Karpoff (1987), identified in several empirical papers for the U.S. market. This is expressed by positive covariance between a stock’s market turnover and the absolute value of that stock’s price change in the same period. This would contradict the implication from weak market efficiency that current price would impound all information. We analyze daily data for 47 stocks covering the period from January 04, 2010 to June 28, 2013. The results indicate that the V-shaped relationship is significant.

Abstract:

This paper argues that the future direction for the development of Korean industrial relations will evolve through direct interaction between employers and trade unions (either conflictual or cooperative). The government is likely to play a less interventionist role in industrial relations, compared with the past, and to adopt the role of mediator between unions and employers. Characteristics of Korean industrial relations during the pre- 1987 period is firstly examined; four major factors are used to explain the industrial relations practice during this time. Changes after 1987 are also considered. Special consideration is given to interaction between the environment and the three major industrial relations participants, and the interactions between them. Both macro and micro aspects of industrial relations are examined. The special Presidential Address (26/04/1996), known as New Conception of Industrial Relations, is also analysed in terms of its implications for future industrial relations issues in Korea.

AbstractPatients with inherited bleeding disorders who received clotting factor concentrates before 1987 have high rates of hepatitis C virus (HCV) or HCV/HIV infection. We evaluated HCV quasispecies evolution in longitudinally collected specimens comparing those from patients with progression to end-stage liver disease (ESLD; cases) to those with compensated chronic hepatitis (controls). Plasma samples were obtained from the National Cancer Institute Multicenter Hemophilia Cohort Study. Controls were matched for age, sex, infection duration, and presence/absence of HIV. Samples from early infection were compared to those obtained after onset of ESLD in the cases. The first hypervariable (HVR1) and core proteincoding regions were amplified, subcloned, and sequenced. Complexity and diversity were determined. More than 700 sub-clones from 10 pairs of patients (8 with HIV) followed over approximately 9.3 years were evaluated. HVR1 complexity narrowed over time in the cases, whereas it increased in controls (P = .01). Similar trends were observed for diversity within HVR1 and the core region (P = .04). HCV-infected patients with inherited bleeding disorders undergo quasispecies evolution over time. Evolution patterns differ for progressors and nonprogressors. Further understanding of these mechanisms may help identify factors related to progression rate and treatment response.

Abstract:

The ciliate list for Plymouth waters has been extended by 14 species using modern taxonomic techniques. Ciliates were abundant in the plankton where they formed a significant food resource. Their community biomass and production was estimated to average 12 µ C 1 and 9 µ C 1 respectively during the summer. The ciliate community was dominated by a diverse assemblage of aloricate choreotrichs, suggesting a complex trophic role for this protozoan group.Ciliate protozoans are ubiquitous and often abundant in marine waters where they are frequently considered to play an important ecological role in trophic flux and nutrient cycling within the plankton (Fenchel, 1987). In spite of this, however, their ecological role in British coastal waters is poorly understood. In Plymouth waters, for instance, there has been only one previous study of marine pelagic Protozoa (Lackey & Lackey, 1963), despite the presence of a marine laboratory in the region for over 100 years. As the study by Lackey & Lackey (1963) focused solely upon the taxonomy of local protists, the ecological role of protozoans in Plymouth waters is unknown. To redress this anomaly the present pilot study was undertaken in Plymouth waters with the following objectives: to identify the dominant ciliates from this region using techniques unavailable to Lackey & Lackey (1963), to quantify ciliate abundance and cell sizes, and to estimate their biomass and production.Triplicate water samples were collected, using a 3-litre water bottle, from surface waters at each of four stations along a 20-km transect between Plymouth Sound (50°21'N 04°09'W) and the Eddystone Rock (50°ll'N 04°16'W) during June, July and August 1988.
