Abstract:
In Austria, between 1990 and 2000, 924 travel related malaria cases were reported (mean = 84/year). No significant decreasing or increasing trends were observed. P. falciparum (n=517; 55.9%) accounted for the highest number of cases followed by P. vivax or ovale (n=321; 34.7%) and P. malariae (n=29; 2.2%). Most infections were contracted in highly endemic malaria regions (n=686; 74.2%) and most cases were reported from the largest counties: Vienna (n=336, 36.4%), Styria (n=156, 16.8%), and Lower Austria (n=151, 16.3%). Overall, 12 deaths occurred, most were caused by P. falciparum (n=9, 75%; case fatality rate: 1.9%). Data on chemoprophylaxis was available for 752 cases (81.4%) but only half of them (n=367, 48.8%) gave detailed information on the drug used. Data on compliance were obtained for only 45.4% of the cases, with only about 60% of patients completing the full course of prophylaxis.

Abstract:
This paper presents a descriptive analysis of articles on university-industry relationships published between 1990 and 2000 in Industry and Higher Education. The results indicate that the case study methodology is the most common approach in such papers. In terms of the geographical context, most of the articles analyse developments in the UK, other parts of Europe, and the USA. The main subject categories analysed relate to successful experiences of interaction, ways of improving relationships between firms and universities, and appropriate public policies to enhance and encourage such relationships.

Abstract:
The gradual enlargement of the EEC has necessitated an adaptation of European supranational structures established in the 1950-1970s to the needs of the time. Under these circumstances one of the key priorities of France's participation in the EU is he struggle for preserving her influence on the EU decision-making process. The article is devoted to the interaction of France with its partners in the EU institutions. This implies not only the implementation of its own interests, but also the search for compromise more or less satisfactory to all participants.

Abstract:
The organizers of the international conference entitled “The Cultural Contexts of Kazakhstan: History and Contemporaneity,” held in Almaty between 7 and 10 September 1997, chose as the logo of their conference one of the stills from Rustam Khalfin's film Lazy Cinema (Lenivoe Kino). It was the still representing a handful of earth. The choice was far from whimsical, for, as the writer Auezkhan Kodar, one of the organizers of the conference noted, the intention was “to underline the amorphous state of contemporary culture which needs to acquire a precise shape, characteristic to Kazakhstan alone.”

Abstract:
Compiling a world overview of outbound tourism volumes is not an easy task, as data are limited and fragmented. In this article data on inbound tourism by region of origin are used to estimate a matrix of inbound–outbound tourism flows. Based on this information worldwide international tourist arrivals by region of origin and destination are analysed for the period 1990–2000. Aggregated data are presented on the (sub-) regional level and thus a useful framework is provided for understanding tourism flows in the world, and to and from the various (sub-)regions over time.

Abstract:
AbstractThe aim of this article is to characterize the residential structure of the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey (MAM) and to identify the principal socio-spatial transformations that occurred in the 1990s. On the basis of the review of various papers concerning the analysis of the social space of certain Mexican and foreign cities, the principles of factorial ecology are applied for two main purposes: 1) to identify the principal dimensions structuring MAM’s socio-residential space and 2) to characterize the changes in the socio-residential structure of Monterrey for the period between 1990 and 2000. The results of this analysis reveal a degree of instability in the way socio-residential space is structured on the one hand, and a growing differentiation resulting from the polarization of the immigrant population in Monterrey’s urban space on the other.

Abstract:
This paper examines export behaviour of manufacturing firms in Indonesia. We use firm-level data from survey of medium and large Indonesian manufacturing industries over the period 1990-2000. Using panel data regression technique, we find the following regularities. First, there is a persistency in the firm’s decision to export as well as proportion of exported output. Second, higher wage, larger number of production employment, higher productivity and higher share of foreign ownership lead to higher probability of a firm to export. Third, higher wage leads to higher proportion of exported output. However, higher productivity or higher share of foreign ownership leads to lower proportion of exported output. Fourth, while real exchange rate does not significantly affect the probability of firms to export, it significantly affects the proportion of exported output. Fifth, both probability to export and proportion of exported output was significantly much lower during the 1997/1998’s Asian crisis. Finally, looking at the export behaviour across industries, the estimation results show that there is a variation of export behavior across industries. Keywords: Export, manufacture, Indonesia.JEL Classification: F14, F13, D21
