Rayner, Russell. "Training and testing of 1v1 agility in Australian football." Thesis, Federation University Australia, 2020. http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/HandleResolver/1959.17/173773.

Full text
Abstract:
Little is known of how agility events occur in the sport of Australian football (AF). As a result, appropriate training and testing methods are unknown. This thesis investigated 1v1 agility in AF to evaluate alternative methods for training and testing agility. The thesis was undertaken in three studies. Study one investigated if training and testing practices used in elite AF align with the demands of competition. A notational analysis revealed substantial variation in movement patterns used by, and the cognitive demands of, athletes in agility events. A survey of high-performance managers in the AFL revealed that a mixture of open and closed training methods are used in elite AF, and that subjective agility assessment is preferred to formal testing. Study two assessed the reliability and ecological validity of a field-based test of attacking and defending agility for AF. The text exhibited excellent inter-rater and intra-rater reliability, as well as moderate test-retest reliability. Characteristics of the test were compared to the notational analysis to assess the ecological validity of the test. While the test did not fully replicate the agility demands of AF, the test improved ecological validity when compared to previous tests described in the literature. Study three evaluated the effectiveness of a four-week 1v1 training intervention for improving attacking and defending agility in Australian footballers. In addition, the study assessed the crossover of attacking training to defending agility and defending training to attacking agility. Improvements in attacking agility were found which were greater for attacking-trained athletes. However, no improvements in defending agility were realised. This thesis indicates that 1v1 training and testing is suitable for assessing and developing agility in Australian footballers. However, 1v1 training may be more suitable for improving attacking agility. Further, agility is context-specific, and testing and training should consider the role of the athlete.

Louie a berkeley.

Ince, Taylor Haden. "Creation in Qohelet Ecclesiastes 1.1-11 as cosmology, national history, and autobiography." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25849.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a close reading of Ecclesiastes 1.1-11 in the BHS edition of the MT of Qohelet. Its main contention is that Ecclesiastes 1.3-11 is an exposition of the collocation that ends 1.2, of hakkol hevel, and that consequently, the best way to begin to understand hevel in Ecclesiastes is to understand 1.3-11. Chapter 1 presents the scholarly conversation this project enters while presenting some of the unresolved problems the primary text creates. Answers to these problems are suggested, anticipated contributions enumerated. It has not been shown to satisfaction how the first eleven verses of this book cohere or how its various strands―involving Davidic Israel, Qohelet himself, and all creation―tie together. This thesis aims to help remedy that situation. It shows Ecclesiastes not to be the black sheep of the Hebrew Bible but in line with its whole corpus. Chapter 2 reads Ecclesiastes 1.1 as forming an allusive-inclusio with verse 11 which echoes the regnal history of Israel from David to exile, thereby initiating the process of folding the story of Qohelet and Israel into the creation account which follows. It is thus a primer for the two-word judgment hakkol hevel which is summarised in verse 2 and unpacked in verses 3-11 and which folds all things (hakkol) into one thing (hevel). Chapter 3 is a reading of Ecclesiastes 1.2 that discerns its final two words, hakkol hevel, as encapsulating the verse and determining the verses that directly follow, namely Ecclesiastes 1.3-11. These two words carry the verbal freight of hevel into the creation of 1.3-11 and suggest that if we want to understand hevel we must understand the words that immediately follow and first explain it, verses 3-11. Lastly, the way in which hevel appears in verse 2 suggests what verse 1 did, that Qohelet is drawing on the sordid history of Israel to explain the state of all things in what follows. Chapters 3-6 are a close reading of Ecclesiastes 1.3-11 that traces the dynamic of hakkol hevel as it unfolds within creation, speaking both to the corrupt condition of creation and of Israel, thus tying the two together. Chapter 4 reads Ecclesiastes 1.3-4 as showing man and nature as distinct, connected by man’s painful toil, and thus characterised in their relationship by a subtle animosity. Chapter 5 reads Ecclesiastes 1.5-7 as showcasing nature as something characterised by man’s profitless toil but in its own way, through its endurance as opposed to man’s transience. Chapter 6 reads Ecclesiastes 1.8 as the convergence- point of the prologue, as the place where all creation becomes one, wearying thing and thus succinctly reflects hakkol hevel, whose highly antithetical meaning is something like everything is nothing. Verse 8 also hints at the reason for this cosmic fusion and dissolution: it is man’s idolatry, something hevel often speaks to in the Hebrew Bible. Chapter 7 reads Ecclesiastes 1.9-11 as the consummation of this cosmic fusion and dissolution: in these verses all time and space converge into one, wearying, forgettable and forgotten thing. The process mimics the process of death and tells us about what hevel means, for creation, and through Qohelet, for his people, Israel. This homogenisation of time and space polemicises the Latter Prophets through allusion and counters the hope for Israel and creation they proclaim. This is what hakkol hevel means for Qohelet. It means the end of all things, including Israel, in death, and owing to idolatry. Even so, through echo of the Hebrew Bible and in line with it, this prologue may hold out a glimmer of hope for Israel and all things.

Abstract:
This thesis provides an analysis of Israel&

s security conceptions, discourses and practices, in the context of the Arab&
#8211
Israeli conflict in general and the Israeli&
#8211
Palestinian conflict in particular, between 1948 and 2000. The purpose of the study is, to explore those processes through which particular definitions and practices of security have been produced and changed, against the background of the domestic debates and competing worldviews among key political actors
and to highlight the overall impact of these points in different periods on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and, thus, on Israel&
#8217
s overall security. In this context, it is observed that the debates among the political actors, regarding the future borders and the identity of the state, have played a key role in the construction and reconstruction of Israeli security policy particularly vis-à
-vis the Palestinian problem. Nevertheless, it is also observed that the extent of these differences has been limited to the objectives of the security policy, and that a zero-sum conception of security, and the primacy of military means to confront the perceived threats have prevailed as common characteristics of Israeli security understanding, informing Israel&
#8217
s related practices. Along these lines the thesis considers the Oslo peace process as an anomaly, and tries to assess it within the framework of the continuities and changes it has introduced to thinking and acting about security in Israel.

Whalen, Jessica Lea. "Feasting and shared drinking practices in the Early Bronze Age 11-111 (2650-2000 BC) of north-central and western Anatolia." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25695.

Full text
Abstract:
Feasting and shared drinking are long suspected to have been practiced in Anatolian settlements during the Early Bronze Age (EBA). New drinking vessels of metal and ceramic seem meant for drinking together with others. Platters and bowls seem intended to display food and vessel handling. No study has examined these practices in detail. This is largely because of a lack of evidence for the production of special beverages, for instance wine, beer, or mead. The Early Bronze Age is a period of intensifying personal distinction. It is characterised by developments in metallurgy, craft production, long-distance exchange, and at some sites, monumental architecture. Yet how EBA Anatolian communities were organised is unclear. A lack of writing and a limited number of seals suggest that there was no central administration within settlements. This contrasts with contemporaneous sites in southeastern Turkey and in Mesopotamia, whose metallurgy, craft production, architecture, and other developments were overseen by temple and palace complexes. This thesis uses feasting and drinking as a way to examine the social complexity of EBA Anatolian sites. It compiles evidence for these activities in both north-central and western Anatolia. It analyses the incidence of different drinking and pouring shapes across sites, and qualitatively assesses vessel features and the contexts in which they are found. This thesis also evaluates the role of drinking and feasting within settlements. It assesses the settings where drinking and feasting was practiced, together with other indices from each site. Two theoretical models are used to evaluate these activities. One details how the use of objects facilitate social relationships. Another specifies how communities may be organised. Both models provide a wide spectrum for assessing the drinking, feasting, and organisational evidence from sites. These models allow for variation: in how drink and food are used to form social relationships, and also in social complexity. The approach is able to distinguish between different organisational and social strategies across sites and regions. This detail is key for beginning to understand Anatolia's unique development during the period.

Full text
Abstract:
The adsorption, reaction and decomposition of a series of molecules (oxygen, ethylene, acetic acid, carbon monoxide and acetaldehyde) associated with vinyl acetate synthesis were investigated using a combination of ultra-high vacuum surface science techniques, including molecular beam sticking, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption. The single crystal Pd (111) surface, bimetallic Au/Pd (111) surfaces prepared by metal vapour deposition and an alloyed Au30Pd70 (111) crystal were used in these studies. All the molecules investigated adsorbed onto the Pd (111) surface across a wide temperature range. Mechanisms for the reactions of each with the surface were suggested. The carbonaceous organic molecules all decomposed to deposit carbon at the surface at room temperature and above, blocking active sites to adsorption. Above a specific temperature, this carbon went subsurface and no longer inhibited subsequent adsorption of molecules. The deposited carbon could often be removed in a facile manner by oxygen treatment.

Full text
Abstract:
SiC is a promising semiconductor for high-power, high-frequency and hightemperature electronic devices and the synthesis of an epitaxial layer of SiC by implantation, on the surface of Si, can be a route for integration with the Si technology. High temperature implantation (600oC) through a SiO2 cap, 1250oC post-implantation annealing under Ar ambient (with 1% of O2), and chemical etching are the base for the present synthesis. 40 keV carbon implantations were performed into SIMOX(111) and Si(111) substrates covered with a 100 nm SiO2 cap. Implantation into SIMOX was the main focus. It has allowed us to obtain a SiC synthesized layer separated from the bulk silicon and to analyze the structural consequences. In this case, it was performed the conversion of a 65 nm Si(111) overlayer of a SIMOX(111) into 30-45 nm SiC. Sequential C implantations (fluence steps of about 5 × 1016 C/cm2), followed by 1250oC annealing, has allowed to estimate the minimum C fluences to reach the stoichiometric composition as 2.3 × 1017 C/cm2 and 2.8 × 1017 C/cm2, when implanting into SIMOX and into Si, respectively. Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) was employed to measure layer composition evolution. By analyzing the sequential implantations it was possible to understand the carbon redistribution during implantation and annealing. A two-sublayers structure is observed in the synthesized SiC separated from the bulk Si, being the superficial one richer in Si. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) has shown that the synthesized layers are always cubic and epitaxial to the original Si structure. TEM also show that single-step implantations, up to the minimum fluences, result in better structural quality. For a much higher C fluence (4 × 1017 C/cm2), a whole stoichiometric layer is obtained, with reduction of structural quality. Our results indicate that excess of carbon content is the major detrimental factor to determine the final crystalline quality in SiC ion beam synthesis, as compared to the stress, resulting from a forced lattice matching between the Si substrate and the synthesized SiC.

Ollé, Soronellas Marc. "Graphene nanoislands on Ni(111)." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/116323.

Abstract:
Graphene has shown extraordinary electronic and mechanical properties that can be applied in a wide variety of devices and technological fields. Exploring and controlling the different methods to obtain graphene is a crucial step for the successful implementation of this material. Epitaxial growth of graphene on metal surfaces by CVD processes has proven to be a reliable method to obtain graphene layers with good quality and, most importantly, scalable for industrial processes. In this thesis we study using Scanning Tunnel Microscopy at RT and at high temperature the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) reaction that takes place in the Ni(111). We develop a method to grow graphene nanoislands on Ni(111) by tuning the parameters involved in the CVD reaction such as the crystal temperature, propene dose and reaction time. The method consist in dosing the propene at RT and heat the sample once the dosing process is complete during a controlled time. The temperature turns out to be the most determinant parameter. Heating the sample below 400 ºC results in the formation of Ni2C, a surface carbide that inhibits the formation of graphene at the surface. Heating the sample above 400 ºC results in the formation of graphene nanoislands with irregular shape. Above 500 ºC the number of islands diminishes strongly due to gas desorption. To obtain graphene nanoislands in a reproducible manner a minimum dose of 1 L is required, and the coverage of graphene increase with the total dose offered to the surface until it reaches the saturation value at 5 L. The heating time also has an effect in the formation of graphene nanoislands and is found to be optimum for 5 min. A post-reaction thermal treatment can lead to a shape transformaiton of the islands. Annealing at 500 ºC during 20 min forms triangular graphene nanoislands, while annealing the sample at 650 ºC for 10 min leads to hexagonal islands. The structure of the islands is systematically studied paying special attention to the stacking configuration and island edges. Most islands exhibit a 1x1 stacking, although some islands with rotational Moiré patterns were observed. Islands obtained after the thermal treatment have straight edges, which have a crystallographic orientation characteristic of zigzag edges. On the Ni(111) the zigzag hollow (zzh) edges are stable at RT but zigzag top (zzt) edges present a pentagon-heptagon reconstruction named zzt(57). Triangular nanoislands exhibit zzh edges with a predominant top-fcc stacking. The interaction between the substrate and the zzh edges is strong enough to produce stacking changes in some small triangular nanoislands and islands with top-hcp are occasionally observed. Hexagonal nanoislands have zzh and zzt(57) edges alternated.

Abstract:

Faulkner, Philip Bernard. "Three essays on rationality, intentionality and economic agency." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2003. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/244841.

Full text
Abstract:
The central theme of this dissertation is the contribution that the theory of human ontology developed by the philosopher John Searle can make to economics. Searle's account of the cognitive functioning associated with rational behaviour provides a framework within which to analyse the role of conscious and non-conscious factors in rational behaviour; the nature and functioning of discursive and tacit knowledge; and the distinction between intentional and non-intentional states. Using this framework, each of the three essays which make up the core of this dissertation examines aspects of the conception of economic agency associated with a different field in economics; critical realism, behavioural finance and mainstream microeconomics. The first essay, which looks at the critical realist conception of the human actor in Tony Lawson 's Economics and Reality, argues that Lawson leaves undeveloped the notion of tacit knowledge, failing to explain important differences between knowledge that functions by virtue of conscious reflection and that which functions tacitly. From a Searlean perspective the key omission is argued to be the technical notion of intentionality, upon which Searle develops an account of tacit knowledge. I show how this notion of intentionality evades my criticism of Lawson. The second essay examines the conception of agency associated with behavioural finance from the perspective of the human ontology proposed by Searle. The principle theme of the essay is that each of the psychological traits that behavioural finance draws on, namely prospect theory, judgmental heuristics and mental accounting, involves the interplay of both conscious and non-conscious factors. Consequently the agent of behavioural finance is a construction that is readily intelligible in Searlean terms. I argue that this finding leads to a conception of the rationality of the agent encountered in the behavioural finance literature that is quite different from the way in which it is commonly presented. The mainstream microeconomic conception of the human actor is the focus of the final essay, in which it is argued that the treatment of human knowledge on this approach neglects a number of important factors in economic behaviour. The first half of the essay uses a simple Cournot duopoly game under conditions of complete and incomplete information in order to highlight the usual assumptions about actors ' knowledge in mainstream models. On the basis of these findings the second half of the essay then considers three aspects of human agency that these models neglect: non-probabilistic forms of uncertainty and ignorance, the subjectivity of knowledge and the role of tacit knowledge.

Penniston, Kathryn. "A grounded theory study investigating young people's constructs of happiness." Thesis, University of East London, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.553142.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been increasing interest in the nature of happiness and how to achieve it in psychological, sociological, economic and political realms along with discourse on the happiness and well being of children and young people. The aim of the current research was to explore young people's constructs of happiness. There were two research questions: firstly to explore the young people's definitions of happiness; secondly to explore what they felt contributed to this happiness. Ten young people aged thirteen to fourteen volunteered to participate in an individual semi-structured interview with the researcher. The data were analysed and theory was developed using the Grounded Theory method taking a social constructionist approach. The subsequent theory of happiness according to the young people was: friendships bring enduring happiness and are represented by knowing one is cared for and understood as part of a reciprocal relationship, and the activities people share together, particularly talking. Enduring happiness is also achieved through accomplishment whereas temporary happiness is achieved via material factors. Happiness impacts on friendships and accomplishment, and without it there is only unhappiness. Happiness and unhappiness are influenced by environmental factors which are both active and passive. The theory was discussed according to the existing literature. Implications of the findings for the research area and Educational Psychology practice are discussed with suggestions for future research.

Pino, B. "A defence of the theoretical relevance of the term 'concept'." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14271/.

Full text
Abstract:
The notion of a concept has been widely viewed to be fundamental to understanding the mind. However, some have recently questioned the explanatory role of this notion, asserting that we should eliminate it from our considered theory of the mind. In doing so, these critics are said to endorse a form of concept eliminativism. In this thesis, I challenge concept eliminativism and advance a defence of the theoretical relevance of the term ‘concept’. Firstly, I develop a new general taxonomy of eliminativist arguments and claims through examining a range of different eliminativist projects in different domains. Particularly relevant for this thesis, the proposed taxonomy allows for the characterisation of a type of eliminativism that appeals to the theoretical inadequacy of concepts that do not clearly designate a single class of things. Secondly, I challenge what is currently the most prominent eliminativist proposal regarding concepts, namely, Machery’s concept eliminativism. I begin by providing an overview of contemporary theories of concepts and their main problems. Then I go on to show that Machery’s eliminativist proposal fails because it inherits many of the same problems facing the theories of concepts that Machery criticizes. Moreover, I contend that Machery’s alternative to concepts is ill-equipped to solve the problem of intentional content. I conclude that these are good reasons to reject the claim that the benefits of eliminating the notion of a concept overweigh the cost of keeping it. Finally, I defend the theoretical term ‘concept’ by sketching an approach to natural kinds suitable for an immature science, such as the contemporary science of the mind. I examine several apparently incompatible attitudes towards natural kinds within philosophy of science and argue that this apparent incompatibility demands revision. I address this challenge and develop a positive view that vindicates the scientific relevance of the term ‘concept’.

Shim, Tae-Shik. "The aesthetic thought of Zhu Guangqian (1897-1986)." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/29362.

Full text
Abstract:
In modern Chinese aesthetics and literary criticism, Zhu Guangqian (1897-1986) is one of the most well-known theorists. At the same time, he is a writer renowned amongst intellectuals in China whose readable versions of his theory are enjoyed by a large number of young readers. In the 1980s, Zhu drew attention again as an influential figure through the debates over socialist alienation in Marxist humanism and “Culture Fever”. This was due not only to Zhu’s emphasis on subjectivity in Marxist theory in his late phase but also to his fundamental question of how to retain the existential integration between human nature and the world. His emphasis on the aesthetic dimension of art was at odds with prevailing contemporary views on political utility in art. In consequence, the literary theory and aesthetics of his early stage were, until the 1980s, criticised in mainland China for their idealist tendencies. Although there have been some studies on Zhu’s contributions to modern Chinese aesthetic theory and literary criticism, there has been no contemporary study of the formation and development of his thought. This thesis is, therefore, concerned to provide a detailed reconstruction and analysis of these relatively neglected aspects of Zhu’s thought throughout his life. I seek to show that Zhu offers a unique attitude towards the intellectual turmoil of Chinese ethical ideals and Western thinking derived from his education in both China and Europe and developed throughout his further studies of Western thinkers such as Bernardo Croce, Karl Marx and Giambattista Vico.
