Abstract:

AbstractSince 2002, government nationalizations and contractual breaches in general around the world have surged. South America has witnessed a wave of nationalizations of private enterprises, mostly foreign. Some analysts contend that this trend is shaped by the left-wing ideological orientation of the governments, whereas others argue that a more robust explanation is the combination of economic pressure and constraint factors. This article contributes to the debate by using a nuanced institutional analytical framework based on the concept of company versus government opportunism, applied to the recent nationalization of previously privatized companies. It examines Argentina, a country that in the last two decades has seen radical policy reversals, from sweeping privatization of state-owned enterprises in the 1990s to a renationalization effort with some of the same companies in the early 2000s.

Abstract:

SYNOPSIS We empirically examine the profitability of leading Chinese firms, benchmarked against comparable U.S. firms, for the period 2005–2013. Return on invested capital (ROIC), which excludes leverage effects on performance, provides the primary metric. Averaged over firms and years, the two sets of firms have similar profitability, about 11 percent annually. Decomposing ROIC into free cash flow yield and invested capital growth, we show that the same ROIC has very different compositions: while the Chinese firms have high growth and negative free cash flows, the U.S. firms have low growth and positive free cash flows. Due to balance sheet conservatism, we infer that Chinese (U.S.) firms' free cash flow yields and the resulting ROICs have been biased downward (upward). After correcting for the bias, we show that Chinese firms have much higher profitability than their U.S. counterparts: 15.1 percent versus 8.1 percent. This result is driven by the abundance of growth opportunities in China in our sample period. When we control for the growth rates, we find U.S. firms have been more “efficient” in generating more free cash flows than Chinese firms.

<p><strong>Introducción.</strong> Los errores de medicación en la atención ambulatoria se han estudiado poco, a pesar de que representan una amenaza importante para la seguridad del paciente.<br /><strong>Objetivo.</strong> Describir las características de los errores de medicación en atención ambulatoria reportados por un sistema de farmacovigilancia de Colombia entre el 2005 y el 2013.<br /><strong>Materiales y métodos.</strong> Se hizo un estudio descriptivo en el cual se recopilaron, revisaron y categorizaron los reportes de errores de medicación de pacientes atendidos en un servicio farmacéutico ambulatorio a cargo de una empresa nacional de dispensación de medicamentos, entre enero de 2005 y septiembre de 2013. Se consideraron variables que involucraban el proceso (administración, dispensación, prescripción y transcripción), el medicamento, el tiempo para elaborar el reporte, el tipo de error, su causa y su gravedad. El análisis se hizo con el programa SPSS®, versión 22.0.<br /><strong>Resultados.</strong> Se recopilaron 14.873 errores de medicación, de los cuales 67,2 % realmente ocurrió, 15,5 % afectó al paciente y 0,7 % causó daño. Los errores de administración (p&lt;0,001; OR=93,614; IC95% 48,510-180,655), de dispensación (p&lt;0,001; OR=21,585; IC95% 16,139-28,870), de transcripción (p&lt;0,001; OR=5,647; IC95% 3,488-9,142), los relacionados con medicamentos para los órganos de los sentidos (p&lt;0,001; OR=2,046; IC95% 1,519-2,756), y con los medicamentos de uso sistémico contra infecciones (p&lt;0,001; OR=1,993; IC95% 1,574-2,525), la confusión en el nombre del fármaco (p=0,014; OR=1,281; IC95% 1,051-1,560) y los problemas en la interpretación de las prescripciones (p=0,025; OR=1,328; IC95% 1,037-1,702), aumentaron el riesgo de que el error afectara al paciente.<br /><strong>Discusión.</strong> Es necesario establecer sistemas de vigilancia específicos para errores de medicación en los servicios ambulatorios, que hagan énfasis en los procesos de prescripción, transcripción y dispensación. Se requieren estrategias específicas para la prevención de los errores de medicación relacionados con antibióticos.</p>

Następnie z bó- lem ukazuje niezbyt życzliwą atmosferę w Niemczech po wyborze Ratzingera na papieża i w cza- sie jego pontyfikatu, co po 500 latach od wyboru na papieża Niemca powinno być szczególnym powodem do dumy.Analizę nauczania papieskiego zaczyna od krótkiego omówienia trylogii Jezusa z Nazaretu, a w dalszej kolejności encyklik Benedykta XVI Deus Caritas est i Spe salvi oraz Caritas in verita- te. Wspomina o 24 podróżach apostolskich Benedykta XVI, które odbył w czasie ośmiu lat swegopontyfikatu. Przedstawia założenia Roku Pawłowego, Kapłańskiego i Roku Wiary, połączonego ściśle z ideą nowej ewangelizacji, które zostały ogłoszone przez papieża. Do dorobku Benedykta należą też 44 kanonizacje i 105 beatyfikacji. Podkreśla szczególne zasługi papieża w dziedzinie dialogu międzyreligijnego i ekumenicznego. Ukazuje wkład refleksji papieskiej dla pogłębienia problematyki wolności religijnej. Wspomina też o cieniach tego pontyfikatu, do których zalicza przede wszystkim sprawę pedofilii w Kościele oraz aferę Vatileaks.

Abstract:

The success of these projects was the merit of Wroclaw scientists who nurtured these outstanding works of architecture and convince the public to the fact that they stand for works which cannot be missed. Abstract:

Change is an inevitable reality of life. The developments in the world affect the qualities expected from individuals and this reflects on the educational systems. For this reason, the high competitiveness of the countries in the international arena requires that the education systems comply with the requirements of the age. In Turkey, it is seen that the curriculum has been changed in various times since the announcement of the Republic. In 2005, a major change was done and the curriculum was prepared in line with the philosophical and structural approach as well as the the requirements of the age. These programs were updated in 2013 by reviewing the 4 + 4 + 4 education system which was designed in 2012. In 2017, the curriculum has been updated with stakeholder’s feedback in line with the problems faced by previously developed programs and practices. In this context, the aim of the study is to compare the elementary school science curriculums which were prepared based on the constructivist approach in 2005, updated in 2013 and re-revised in 2017, and to reveal their similarities and differences. In the study, the elementary school science curriculums (2005-2013-2017) were compared by investigating in terms of basic philosophy of the curriculum, the general aims of the curriculum, key competences in the curriculum, and the approaches during the teaching situations, the evaluation process, the subject areas, the achievements and the course hours. The research was carried out by document analyzing method of qualitative research methods. As a result of the study, we found out that while there was not much difference between primary school sciences curriculums in 2013 and 2017, there was a great deal of differences between the 2005 curriculum and the 2013 and 2017 curriculum especially in the number of achievements and course hours.

We conducted an empirical study to estimate the private internal rate of return to years of schooling (IRR) in China during the period after the implementation of higher education expansion policy using data from the Chinese General Social Survey data conducted in 2006 and 2014 (CGSS2005, CGSS2013). The major conclusions are as follows: first, from 2005 to 2013, IRR decreased from 8.6% to 7.8% for the whole sample, IRR decreased from 8.3% to 7.4% for men, and IRR decreased from 9.0% to 8.2% for women. Second, IRR values among various education category groups are different. IRR is greater for the high-level education group than that for the middle and low-level education groups in both 2005 and 2013. Third, to consider the impact of the higher education expansion policy on IRR, the IRR of the university graduates decreased from 15.4% (2005) to 11.2% (2013), whereas the IRR of the graduate school graduates rose from 10.1% (2005) to 19.0% (2013). The effect of the policy on IRR differs between the university and graduate school graduates. Fourth, the IRR is higher for women than for men. There is a gender disparity for IRR; IRR is different by ownership types, registration system types, industrial and regional groups in both 2005 and 2013.

ObjectivesThis was a descriptive study of the prescription trend of anti-psychotics for elderly patients in a general hospital in Singapore.MethodsElderly patients aged >65 who received at least 1 prescription of anti-psychotics during 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013 in Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore, were selected. Data was obtained from the hospital computerized prescription records.ResultsThe total number of elderly patients who received anti-psychotics increased from 865 in 2005 to 1990 in 2013. Following the official warning issued by the health sciences authority in 2004 regarding the increased risks of cerebrovascular events in elderly patients taking olanzapine and risperidone, prescriptions for risperidone reduced between 2005 to 2013 (20.74% vs. 11.79%, 95% CI: 0.07–0.10, P < 0.0001). However, the percentage of prescriptions of other atypical anti-psychotics such as quetiapine increased from 27.47% to 58.48% (95% CI: 0.29–0.33, P < 0.0001), in 2005 and 2013 respectively, and prescriptions for olanzapine remained relatively stable at 6.65% in 2005 and 8.94% in 2013 (P > 0.05). With the black box warnings extended to typical anti-psychotics 3 years later, the percentage of prescriptions of typical anti-psychotics decreased between 2005 to 2013, e.g. haloperidol (33.19% vs. 13.39%, 95% CI: 0.17–0.22; P < 0.0001), sulpiride (6.58% vs. 2.83%, 95% CI: 0.03–0.05, P < 0.0001) and chlorpromazine (3.85% vs. 1.85%, 95% CI: 0.01–0.03, P < 0.0001).ConclusionsAfter the first safety warning the percentage of prescriptions for risperidone dropped significantly, and there was a significant increase for quetiapine. The percentage of haloperidol, sulpiride and chlorpromazine prescriptions declined after both warnings. We focus on the anthropogenic NO2 by subtracting region-specific "background" values dominated by natural sources. We find significant NO2 growth over Western China between 2005 and 2013 (8.6 ± 0.9 % yr−1 on average, relative to 2005), with the largest increments (15 % yr−1 or more) over parts of several city clusters. The NO2 pollution in most provincial regions rose rapidly from 2005 to 2011 but stabilized or declined afterwards. The NO2 trends were driven mainly by changes in anthropogenic emissions, as confirmed by a nested GEOS-Chem model simulation and a comparison with Chinese official emission statistics. Based on the sea level budget closure approach, this study investigates the residuals between observed global mean sea level (GMSL) and the sum of components (steric sea level and ocean mass) for the period January 2005 to December 2013. The objective is to identify the impact of errors in one or several components of the sea level budget on the residual time series. This is a key issue if we want to constrain missing contributions such as the contribution to sea level rise from the deep ocean (depths not covered by observations). For that purpose, we use several data sets as processed by different groups: six altimetry products for the GMSL, four Argo products plus the ORAS4 ocean reanalysis for the steric sea level and three GRACE-based ocean mass products. We find that over the study time span, the observed differences in trend of the residuals of the sea level budget equation can be as large as ~ 0.55 mm yr−1 (i.e., ~ 17 % of the observed GMSL rate of rise). These trend differences essentially result from differences in trends of the GMSL time series. Using the ORAS4 reanalysis (providing complete geographical coverage of the steric sea level component), we also show that lack of Argo data in the Indonesian region leads to an overestimate of the absolute value of the residual trend by about 0.25 mm yr−1. Accounting for this regional contribution leads to closure of the sea level budget, at least for some GMSL products. At short timescales (from sub-seasonal to interannual), residual anomalies are significantly correlated with ocean mass and steric sea level anomalies (depending on the time span), suggesting that the residual anomalies are related to errors in both GRACE-based ocean mass and Argo-based steric data. Efforts are needed to reduce these various sources of errors before using the sea level budget approach to estimate missing contributions such as the deep ocean heat content.
