Abstract:
The past three decades have seen a pronounced development of conventional japonica rice from the 1990s, although little information is available on changes regarding grain yield and nutrient use efficiency during this process. Nine conventional japonica rice released during the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s were grown under a reduced nitrogen rate, with increased planting density (RNID) and local cultivation practice (LCP) in 2017 and 2018. The rice from the 2010s had 3.6–5.5% and 7.0–10.1% higher (p < 0.05) grain yield than the 2000s and the 1990s, respectively, under RNID and LCP. The harvest index contributed more to genetic yield gain from the 1990s to the 2000s; whereas from the 2000s to 2010s, yield increase contributed through shoot biomass. Genetic improvement increased total nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) accumulation, and their use efficiencies. The rice from the 2010s showed a similar grain yield, whereas the 1990s and 2000s’ rice exhibited a lower (p < 0.05) grain yield under RNID relative to LCP. RNID increased N, P, and K use efficiencies, particularly the N use efficiency for the grain yield (NUEg) of the 2010s’ rice, compared with LCP. For three varietal types, RNID increased the panicles per m2, the filled-grain percentage, and the grain weight (p < 0.05) while decreasing spikelets per panicle of the 2010s’ rice. Compared with LCP, RNID reduced non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) content and shoot biomass, at heading and maturity, while increasing the remobilization of NSC and the harvest index, especially for the 2010s’ rice. Our results suggested the impressive progressive increase in grain yield and nutrient use efficiency of conventional japonica rice since the 1990s in east China. RNID could facilitate grain yield and NUEg for modern conventional japonica rice.

Abstract:
The temporal and spatial variability of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal waters of Fujian were analyzed at interannual and decadal scales based on recorded HAB events collected from 1956 to 2019. The number and impact area of HABs exhibited little change from 1959 to the 1990s, sharply increased from the 1990s to 2000s, and decreased from the 2000s to 2010s. The highest number and greatest coverage of blooms occurred in the 2000s. The proportion of HABs caused by dinoflagellates increased, while the proportion caused by diatoms decreased from the 2000s to the 2010s. Toxic HAB events caused by Karenia mikimotoi increased in frequency and spatial coverage in the 2010s, especially on the central Fujian coast. Increasing concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and dissolved inorganic phosphorus have been essential for increasing HAB occurrences since the 1980s. The combined effects of eutrophication and climate change have been suggested to be important reasons for long-term changes in HABs. Knowledge of the change patterns in and the mechanisms of HABs gained in this study will extend the current understanding of HABs along the Fujian coast and support future studies on HAB monitoring, early warning, prevention, and management.

Abstract:
The article examines the trilogy by Dina Rubina “People of the Air” (2008—2010) and “Russian Canary” (2014). The relevance of the study is due, firstly, to the low degree of study of the trilogy “Russian Canary” (the onomastic space of the work is analyzed and the features of the book are determined in the context of a family novel of the 20th century); secondly, the need to differentiate the author’s artistic methodology, which is different in the studied macro-texts. The novelty of the research is seen in the fact that the authors, comparing the two trilogies by Dina Rubina, come to the conclusion that the author uses various semiotic strategies for constructing texts, thus revealing the homology of storylines, methods of constructing character series and general principles of world modeling of trilogies. The results of a comparative analysis are presented, which allow us to see the patterns of the artistic search of a modern author and his stylistic innovations. It is proved that with the parallelism of character series of two epic cycles, the author in the first case resorts to the artistic method of magical realism (“People of the Air”), and in the second case uses realistic principles of writing (“Russian Canary”).

Abstract:
One of the main features of Greek diplomacy is the combination of pro-Western orientation and the desire to act independently in a number of key issues, firmly defending national interests. In recent years, however, the western vector began to prevail. In ideology, this manifested itself in the positioning of the country as an outpost of Western civilization in the East, a defender of democratic values, operating in accordance with the interests of collective West. In security policy, the main efforts were aimed at creating a counterbalance to Greece's existential rival – Turkey. Not having sufficient resources for an ‘arms race’ with the eastern neighbour, the Greek authorities have shifted their focus to closer cooperation with major powers, as well as with regional actors seeking to curb Turkish ambitions. The idea of confronting ‘geopolitical revisionism’ has taken a prominent place in the political rhetoric of the conservative government, especially since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine. In economic sphere, Greece continues its policy aimed at becoming a key transit hub for transporting energy resources to Europe. Despite the fact that there are good reasons for strengthening ties with the West, the ultimate success of this strategy is not evident. In the Greek media, there is an increasing opinion that such a course will narrow the room for diplomatic maneuver. At the same time, the main task – to isolate Turkey – will not be implemented. In the future, imbalances in foreign policy may hinder the development of economic ties between Greece and non-Western countries (in the case of Russian-Greek relations, this is already happening), and this in turn will undermine the country's resilience to crisis processes in the world economy and politics.

"The Rise of the Androgynous Princess: Examining Representations of Gender in Prince and Princess Characters of Disney Movies Released 2009–2016." Social Sciences 7, no. 12 (2018): 245. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/socsci7120245.

Abstract:
Previous quantitative research examining Disney movies has highlighted that whilst prince characters display largely balanced gender profiles, princesses exhibit biased gender role portrayals—performing mostly feminine characteristics, rarely participating in rescue behavior, and concluding movies in romantic relationships with the prince. However, such research, as well as public commentary, has also suggested that princess characters in movies released across the 2000s and 2010s may have more positive gender role portrayals. This study aimed to test these assertions by utilizing content coding analysis to examine the behavioral characteristics, rescue behavior, and romantic conclusions of prince and princess characters in five iconic Disney films released between 2009 and 2016 (The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Brave (released under Pixar), Frozen, and Moana). Comparisons were also made with earlier titles to assess historical changes. Results showed that princesses in “2000s to 2010s” movies exhibited an almost equal number of masculine and feminine behaviors, thus demonstrating more egalitarian profiles over time. In contrast, princes appeared to adopt a more feminine behavioral profile in later movies. In addition, characters engaged in equal numbers of rescue behaviors, and princesses were more likely to remain single in “2000s to 2010s” movies. Results therefore suggest that Disney is indeed presenting more diverse, androgynous, balanced characters to viewers, and the theoretical and practical implications for the socialization of young child viewers are discussed.

Abstract:
The ultimate goal of this paper is to provide a comparative analysis of have a look at and take a look at in four corpora. A major point to note is that take a look at is preferred over have a look at in the TV Corpus from the 1950s to the 2010s. A further point to note is two types reached a peak in the 2010s, which in turn implies that they are the most preferred ones in the 2010s. With respect to the Movie Corpus, it is worth noting that take a look at is favored over have a look at in the Movie Corpus from the 1930s to the 2010s. It is noteworthy, on the other hand, have a look at reached a peak (346 tokens) in the 2000s, whereas take a look at reached a peak (1,310 tokens) in the 2010s. This in turn implies that two types were the most preferred ones in in those periods. The COCA clearly shows that have a look at http is the most preferred one in America, whereas take a look at it is the most preferred one. The COCA also shows that 8.88% of forty five nouns are the collocations of both have a look at and take a look at. The BNC clearly indicates that have a look at number and take a look at trends are the most preferable ones among the British. With respect to the BNC, it is interesting to point out that only 3.7% of twenty seven nouns are the collocation of have a look at and take a look at.

Abstract:
In the 2000s and 2010s, there is an influential phenomenon called “state advance and private retreat” in China’s SOE reforms in strategic industries related to the production and processing of petroleum, ferrous metals, tobacco and telecommunication. Although some indicators have shown SOEs’ decreasing proportions in these industries, considering SOEs’ paid- in capital and assets, the tide of state advance and private retreat does exist in the strategic industries. There are four variables influencing state advance and private retreat. For interest groups, the government-SOEs relationship cannot explain the existence of state advance and private retreat in the 2000s and 2010s since this relationship also existed before the 2000s. As SOEs’ strong representative in policy-making process, the SASAC has greatly contributed to SOEs’ march in the market after its establishment in 2003, while at the same time, private enterprises do not have enough access to policy making process. For political elites, differences between Jiang- Zhu leadership and Hu-Wen leadership are one of the causes. As for institutional factors, both the fiscal and financial systems have increased SOEs’ advantages in market competitions. For influential event, “Lang Whirlwind”, China’s accession to the WTO, and the 2008 financial crisis in the 2000s all greatly contributed to the emergence of state advance and private retreat.<br>Arts, Faculty of<br>Political Science, Department of<br>Graduate

Chezzi, Bruna. "Cultural representations of Italians in Wales (1920s-2010s)." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2013. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/47524/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to enrich academic scholarship by investigating cultural narratives of Italians in Wales from 1920s–2010s. It will make use of sources that have been understudied, such as the photographs of Italians in Wales during the interwar period and local newspapers reporting on the incident of the Arandora Star sinking during the Second World War. It also provides an original contribution to debates on migration, memory and identity drawing on recently emerged sources, such as the accounts generated by second and third generations of Italian migrants about the traumatic experience of the Second World War and the published works by Welsh-Italian authors such as Servini, Pelosi, Spinetti, Emanuelli and Arcari. Finally, this thesis also provides an original approach by comparing these ‘narratives of belonging’ with the representation of the Italian migrant experience in Anglo-Welsh literature.

Abstract:
This study investigates the influence of women’s empowerment measured via spousal educational difference and women’s completed education level on the use of maternal health services (Antenatal care and skilled birth assistance), and whether it varies by ethnicity. A theoretical framework based on Kabeer’s three dimension of empowerment combined with Zimmerman’s approach and the rational choice theory informs the analyses. Data from the 2013/2014 Zambia Demographic and Health survey are analysed focusing on women aged 15 -49 years who are married/ live with a partner and had a birth in the past five years. Multivariate logistic regression is the tool of analysis. The results indicate significant association between women’s completed education level and use of maternal health services. Spousal educational differences show no significant association with the use of MH services. For both ANC and SBA use, a relatively weak relationship is seen with ethnicity. In addition, women’s wealth level, the province they live in and region of residence type appear to be important with respect to the utilization of MH services. The findings are explained in relation to the theoretical framework as well as previous studies, concluding the study with suggestions for further research.

Abstract:
The thesis analyses the plans for the city of Portsmouth in the period between c.1600 to 2010s, with particular focus on the history of planning ideas and the influences behind them. The text is subdivided into four main chapters, each dealing with a particular historical period characterized by ideological (often linked to political) shifts within the idea of creating physical urban improvement as sought after catalysts for both social and economical enhancements. Chapter 1 is entitled ‘From City as Heaven to City as Threat’. It discusses the birth of Portsmouth up to the industrial revolution, when the city went from being a supporter of culture and life to being perceived as a threat to its citizens. Chapter 2 is entitled ‘The Origins of Urban Improvement in Portsmouth’, and discusses a timeframe that spans from 1850s to 1930s. This section analyses the early responses to the urban problems, which span from the urban health reforms and regularization strategies, to Town Planning and ultimately a more specific interwar Garden City methodology of suburbanization. Chapter 3 is named ‘In Pursuit of Modernity’ and discusses the time frame from 1940s to 1970s. This section examines the impact of the Second World War’s destruction, the subsequent ‘Re-planning’ of the city, its ‘Reconstruction’ in the ‘50s-‘60s and its reactions in the ‘70s through the practice of ‘Urban Renewal’. Chapter 4 has the title ‘Towards the Millennium and Beyond’ and discusses the 1980s up to the 2010s. This final section of the thesis highlights the effects that postindustrialization had for the city, leading to processes of ‘Regeneration’ in the late ‘90s, and how those principles continue to inform the urban improvement strategies in the new millennium. In discussing Portsmouth’s development history, the thesis highlights how the idea of centrality and poly-centrality are a reoccurring phenomenon in Portsmouth’s pursuit of urban, social and economical improvement. The thesis serves as a critical body of work that will benefit both historians and pioneers in the field of urban improvements interested in Portsmouth specifically and British-European planning more generally.

Abstract:
Governments have a choice whether to intervene in the transport infrastructure sector to manage, finance and own the assets of the sector, or to rely on markets and private sector actors for the provision of these systems. In this article the development of rail and road infrastructure in Sweden and the choice between government and market provision of these systems are analyzed from a co-evolutionary perspective. Technology, economics, and politics have influenced the government’s policy formation and decisions on organizational models over time, such as the nationalization of roads and railroads in the 1930s-40s. The aim for improved economic efficiency and reduction of cost differences between different parts of the country rather than political ideology explain why roads and railroads were nationalized. Through adjusting its ownership role and policy content the government has, over time, accommodated to the different influences from technology, economics and politics. The government’s ownership of transport infrastructure has not been challenged since the nationalization. This could be seen as a sign of a successful gradual policy adjustment from the government’s side, thereby avoiding private sector solutions.<br><p>QC 20130614</p>

Full text
Abstract:
Since the late 1880s, Zambia has been engaged in a repeated series of encounters with Christian renewals. The arrival of Pentecostalism will be viewed as the palpable product of this intensely creative process. Zambian Pentecostalism emerged in continuity with the fruit of European Christian missionary enterprise, but its more contemporary version evolved in spontaneous response to the rise and ministry of influential local Zambian leaders such as Joel Chidzakazi Phiri, prophetess Alice Lenshina, evangelist Dr. Nevers Sekwila Mumba, Winston Broomes, and Jack and Winsome Muggleton. The activities of these key figures led to the formation and prominence of three main church streams across Zambia: Prophetic and Pentecostal-type Pentecostalism, Classical Pentecostalism and Neo-Pentecostalism. The brand of Pentecostalism that emerged in Zambia in the 1940s has been influenced by several theological, cultural, political and social influences. One noticeable feature of Zambian PentecostalCharismatic Churches has been their change in character across the decades from holiness and evangelistic traditions of the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s to the faith and prosperity ministry of the 2010s. Pentecostal-Charismatic has become engaged in the public sphere by the early 1990s. A further development since the 2000s has been the prominence of the prophetic and apostolic, which is the combination of teaching mainly from the USA and various strands of previous ministries with an emphasis on miracles, deliverance, prosperity and prophecy.

Cliffe, David. "Thriller, horror, hacker, spy : the 'hacker' genre in film and television from the 1970s to the 2010s." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/16358.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that hacking and surveillance have formed a ‘hacker’ genre in film and television that begins to emerge from the influences of 1970s films, forming between the 1980s and 1990s and continuing to develop through to the 2010s, grouping together computer hacking, surveillance and espionage as activities striving to achieve order over the ‘electronic frontier’. In particular, this thesis identifies how hacker genre films foreground and fetishise the technology of hacking and surveillance of the period of production, which inevitably leads to an in-built expiry date and limited shelf-life. Whilst these genre films draw on the crime, horror and thriller traditions to depict the tension and anxiety presented by the capabilities of this hacking and surveillance technology, as technology progresses and becomes more familiar to the audience, these films naturally lose their ability to elicit fear and terror from the viewer; instead these films become virtual parodies of their original intention. Moreover, the thesis maps the evolution and development of the generic features of the hacker film genre, charting the progression from passive observation to active intervention of the hacker figure; as the technology progresses, there is an increased sense of speed and mobility and the hacker emerges from small enclosed spaces to engage with the physical world. Similarly, the thesis considers the role of the ‘hacker figure’ in these films, using the viewer’s human connection to consider how this technology affects the user over time; considering the links to the thriller and horror traditions, this study considers the potential for the hacker to become dehumanised in using this technology.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to bring China into comparative welfare research by using a historical institutionalist framework to study Chinese pension reforms (1980s-2010s). The study takes as its starting point the literature on welfare state development and change in the West and thus traces the development of Chinese pensions in comparative perspective. The discussion of the determinants of Chinese pension development concentrates on the history (path dependence, timing and sequences) as well as meso level institutions (veto points, veto players) and their interplay with macro context and micro actors in the policy making process. In order to explore the key explanatory and outcome variables in the research framework, this study includes a detailed discussion of the conceptualization, operationalization, and measurement of the dependent variable, Chinese pension reform, as well as, by way of synthesizing key contributions in the existing historical institutionalist pension reform literature, a detailed theoretical attempt to disentangle the explanatory power of mainstream determinants of pension reform. ‘Bringing China into comparative welfare research’ thereby necessitates the proposition of a revised framework of analysis based on China’s context and new developments within historical institutionalism. By using this alternative framework, this study attempts to improve the theoretical understanding of China as well as to discuss practical policy issues facing China.

Abstract:
This dissertation studies the critical reception of Hilma af Klint trough three exhibitions: Spiritual in Art – Abstract Painting 1890-1985 (Los Angeles, 1986), Secret Pictures by Hilma af Klint, (Helsinki, 1988) and Hilma af Klint – A Pioneer of Abstraction (Stockholm, 2013), addressing the crucial prominent figures and voices in the discursive field around af Klint. The aim is carried out through the Critical Discourse Analysis by Norman Fairclough, coupled with Pierre Bourdieu's concept of the cultural field and habitus. Judith Butler's theory of gender performance completes the theoretical framework by addressing issues of gender in both af Klint's practice as well as in the analysed critical reviews. The thesis examines how the discourses about af Klint changed during different periods of time in the 1980s and the 2010s. The central hypothesis is that this case study can be used as an example to see how the art field presents women artists as a marginal phenomenon instead of including them in the general art historical canon. But the reception of af Klint cannot be fully understood through the lens of gender; thus, e.g. the closeness to the occult is considered both as a leading mechanism in the artistic practice, creating interest towards af Klint, and as an identity which pushes her to the marginal. The results of this study lead to a better understanding of critical articles' role in the cultural phenomena's narrative creation.

Abstract:
Horizontality is a salient social phenomenon of the last decade. It asserts itself against hierarchies in social movements and countless other collective practices around the world. It constitutes a characteristic of an emergent sociality that demands the attention of the social sciences. The 2010s are a moment as important as “the Sixties”, a time when Ivan Illich called for the development of tools of conviviality, and horizontality may be categorized as one of them. Today’s horizontality may be related to that of populations that have been the focus of anthropologists interested in their longstanding propensity to work against the affirmation of the authority of commanding. Public squares, roundabouts, and the courtyards of apartment buildings welcome the early symptoms of democratic experimentation that circulates also among groups, collectivities, and associations with varied purposes. In all these places, equality asserts itself and cuts across differences. The Yellow Vests and an educational cooperative in São Paulo are the empirical foundation of this study.

Abstract:
This paper traces the origins of the New Brazilian Right, regarding the emergence of new leaders, new forms of expression and organization, as well as new sets of ideas, namely libertarianism and anti-globalism. Based on more than thirty in-depth interviews, conducted between 2015 and 2019 with right-wing leaders and activists; on a collection of historical data from right-wing organisations’ archives between 2015 and 2018, and on public data, I argue that this phenomenon started in the mid-2000s, after the onset of a corruption scandal related to the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) and the dissemination of the pioneering social network Orkut in Brazil. This social network, founded in 2004, preceded Facebook’s popularity in Brazil and enabled the creation of alternative and disruptive spaces of debate, referred to here as “counterpublics”. By mid- to late 2010s, during the 2014 protests for the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff and Jair Bolsonaro’s 2018 presidential campaign, this emerging new right would be at full throttle.

Yaro, Joseph, Joseph K. Teye, and Steve Wiggins. Land and Labour Relations on Cocoa Farms in Sefwi, Ghana: Continuity and Change. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/apra.2021.033.

Full text
Abstract:
When in the 1880s farmers in southern Ghana began to plant cocoa, their main concerns were finding land to plant and mobilising labour to do so. The issue of finding land remained paramount until at least the 1990s, when the land frontier of forest to clear for cocoa finally closed. The last forests to be planted were in the old Western Region and particularly in Sefwi, now the Western North Region. This paper examines how farmers in Sefwi obtained land and mobilised labour in the late 2010s, and how that has changed since the 1960s.

Abstract:
After cement production in Saudi Arabia surged in the first half of the 2010s due to the country’s rapid economic development, it has slowed measurably in recent years as economic growth has declined. This is shown in Figure 1, along with the evolution of the Kingdom’s real gross domestic income (RGDI). Still, it ranks among the top 10 countries for existing cement kiln capacity. The Saudi cement industry has relied on Arab Heavy crude oil, heavy fuel oil (HFO), and natural gas to produce clinker, a key cement ingredient.

Iffat, Idris. Approaches to Youth Violence in Jordan. Institute of Development Studies, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.121.

Full text
Abstract:
Youth violence, particularly targeting the state as well as engagement in violent extremism, has been a persistent feature in Jordan over the past decade. There are numerous factors driving this: economic, political and social marginalization of young people; a search for purpose (in the case of religious extremism); and ineffective youth policies on the part of the government. Other key forms of marginalization in Jordan are ethnicity, gender and disability. With regard to community security mechanisms, Jordan has made efforts to introduce community policing. These link in with traditional tribal dispute resolution mechanisms, but the impact on youth is unclear. Psychosocial support for youth is important. Interventions will vary depending on needs and context, but sport and education (learning spaces) are especially effective avenues to reach young people. This review drew on a mixture of academic and grey literature. While it found significant literature about youth protests in Jordan (in particular in the early 2010s) and on drivers of youth violence, as well as other forms of marginalization in the country, there was very little on community security mechanisms – whether formal or informal. The review identified several sources of recommendations for psychosocial support programming (for youth), but few evaluations of such interventions specifically targeting youth in other countries. Overall, there are gaps in the evidence base, highlighting the need for further research.

Duong, Bich-Hang, Vu Dao, and Joan DeJaeghere. Complexities in Teaching Competencies: A Longitudinal Analysis of Vietnamese Teachers’ Sensemaking and Practices. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-risewp_2022/119.

Full text
Abstract:
Education systems globally are implementing competency-based education (CBE) reforms. Vietnam's leaders have also adopted CBE in a comprehensive reform of its education since the early 2010s. Although the global idea of CBE has been widely adopted and recontextualized in various educational contexts, implementing the reform at the local level (e.g., teachers in schools) is never a linear and simple process. Given the complicated sensemaking process of competency and competency teaching, this study explores how Vietnamese teachers made sense of key competencies and adapted their teaching to competency development. Informed by a sociocultural approach and the sensemaking perspective, this study draws from a dataset of 91 secondary teachers collected over three years (2017-2019), with a particular focus on longitudinal analysis of eight teachers. The findings shed light on teachers’ ambivalence as they made sense of the target competencies and aligned their practices with the new CBE reform. Based on their prior experiences and worldviews, teachers made sense of competencies as learning foundational knowledge and skills, in addition to developing good attitude, character, and morality. Over the years, they placed a stronger emphasis on the competencies’ process-orientation, integration, and real-life application toward whole-child development. Despite teacher sensemaking and changing practices, the performativity culture for high learning outcomes still prevailed, making teaching competencies for life a challenging task. Contributing to the CBE literature and practice, this study illustrates the long and complicated process through which teachers recontextualize the CBE pedagogy. It also suggests how teacher practices can be better supported to transition to the new CBE curriculum.

Loewenstein, Lara P., and Paul S. Willen. House Prices and Rents in the 21st Century. Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.26509/frbc-wp-202302.

Full text
Abstract:
We study the joint evolution of prices and rents of residential property. We construct indices for both rents and prices of renter-occupied properties and for prices of owner-occupied properties. We then decompose the change in the price of occupant-owned property into three components: (1) changes in rent, (2) changes in the relative prices of investor- and occupant-owned properties, and (3) changes in the price-rent ratio. We use a simple model to link our decomposition to different sources of variation in house prices. We argue that while the 2000s boom was plausibly driven by exuberant expectations, the boom of the 2020s more likely resulted from a preference shock.
