The tensile strength (TS) and elastic modulus (ES) of non-irradiated (thermally treated) and irradiated Polypropylene (PP) - styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) composites were studied. The content of SBR (mass %) on PP and radiation dose play an important role on tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of PP-SBR composites. Tensile strength (TS) decreased markedly on increasing the SBR content on PP and even on exposing to radiation. The objective of this study was to determine the epidemiologic features of VSIs in patients attending a dermatology clinic in Egypt from June 2010 to May 2011. AbstractEmissions trading schemes (ETS) have become popular as a policy instrument to tackle climate change. This chapter analyses the decision to deploy carbon markets and their interaction with other instruments in Mexico’s climate policy. Instrument selection has been thoroughly explored in the regulation and public policy literature (Kern et al. in Res Policy 48, 2019; Capano and Lippi in Policy Sci 50(2):269–293, 2016; Wurzel et al. in German Policy Studies 9:21–48, 2013; Harker et al. in Climate Policy 17(4):485–500, 2017; Baldwin et al. in Understanding regulation, Oxford University Press, 2012; Jordan et al. in Policy instruments in practice. Oxford handbooks online 536–549, 2011), but its application to carbon markets is mainly focused on environments such as Europe, the US and, more recently, China. The decision to adopt an ETS relies not only on specific characteristics of each instrument but also on institutional constraints and messy political considerations. A combination of preferences and institutional factors affect the choice of instruments, and the ultimate decision must be legitimate and instrumental for each context. I analyse the considerations involved in the deployment of the ETS pilot project, looking at its distinctive characteristics and those it shares with other available instruments, as well as the requirements for its implementation.

AbstractTemporal trends of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) were assessed using 86 pooled human milk samples from 59 countries from all United Nations Regional Groups collected between 2008 and 2019 as part of the WHO/UNEP-coordinated exposure studies. The primary objective of these temporal studies is to provide monitoring data for the effectiveness evaluation of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). General temporal trends were estimated using data from all participating countries by grouping into three equal four-year periods (2008–2011, 2012–2015, and 2016–2019) reflecting the performance of three rounds of the studies. A more precise approach is the use of data from 24 countries with repeated participation in the WHO/UNEP-coordinated exposure studies, 22 of them in different periods and two in the same period. However, there were no Western European countries with multiple participation, and only two countries from the Asia-Pacific Region with one country submitting two samples in the same period.The country-specific PFOS data showed decreasing tendencies in 19 of the 22 countries with participation in different periods, quite constant levels in two countries and increasing tendencies in one country (from its first participation in 2010 to the second participation in 2015). For the two countries with repeated participation in the same period, it does not seem appropriate to derive country-specific temporal tendencies. An overall decrease of PFOS concentrations over 10 years of 48% and 52%, respectively, was calculated by the Theil–Sen method (1) using all samples and (2) using samples from countries with repeated participation. PFOA concentrations showed decreasing tendencies in 17 countries of the 22 countries with participation in different periods, quite constant levels in two countries and increasing tendencies in three countries (from their first participation between 2009 and 2011 to the second participation in 2015). An overall decrease over 10 years for PFOA concentrations of 42% and 47%, respectively, was calculated by the Theil–Sen method (1) using all samples and (2) using samples from countries with repeated participation. The estimation of general temporal trends for PFHxS was not possible, as in 84% of the samples PFHxS concentrations were below the limit of quantification (5.7 ng/L).

AbstractVegetation covers were one of the first land covers to receive special attention when thematic Land Use Cover (LUC) maps first appeared. Interest in this subject has remained strong since then because of the valuable information that these datasets provide for monitoring forests, deforestation and climate change, among other issues. A wide variety of thematic LUC datasets characterizing vegetation covers are currently available. In this chapter, we review eleven of these datasets, most of which provide long series of LUC maps, so permitting the study of LUC change. In thematic terms, most of the maps provide information on the vegetation or tree cover fraction per pixel, so characterizing the vegetation covers on Earth in great detail. A specific dataset has been found that maps mangrove distribution across the globe at 30 m for one date (1997/00). It is not included in this review because of its high specificity, which means it is only of interest to certain communities of users. Of all the products reviewed here, the World’s Forests 2000 is probably the most basic, providing information about three wooded cover categories for the year 1995/96 at a spatial resolution of 1 km. SYNMAP is a very specific thematic map designed to meet the needs of the carbon cycle and vegetation modelling community, which was produced at a spatial resolution of 1 km and with a legend of 48 categories. Among the maps providing information on the fraction of vegetation cover per pixel, the Hybrid Forest Mask 2000 (1 km) and the PTC Global Version (500 m–1 km) offer relatively coarse resolutions and few points in time: just one date in the former (2000) and two in the latter (2003, 2008). The Forests of the World 2010 is also available for just one year (2010), albeit at a more detailed spatial resolution (250 m). Various datasets provide information on the cover fraction for long periods of time at medium and high spatial resolutions. FCover provides the longest time series (1999-present) at 1 km, although since 2014 this dataset is also available at 300 m. Modis VCF also offers a long data series (2000–2019) at a spatial resolution of 250 m. MEaSUREs Vegetation Continuous Fields (VCF) is another thematic LUC dataset providing information on the tree cover fraction of the earth surface for a very long time period: 1982–2016. However, it is not reviewed here because of its coarse spatial resolution (around 5.6 km at the Equator). At very detailed spatial resolutions, GFCC30TC Landsat VCF (30 m) provides data on the cover fraction for four different points in time, between 2000 and 2015. It also gives information on forest change for two periods (1990–2000/2000–2005) through the associated GFCC30FCC dataset. The Hansen forest map (30 m) also provides one of the longest time series, from 2000 to 2019. Global FNF is the dataset with the highest resolution (25 m) of all those reviewed. It is available for two periods of time: 2007–2010 and 2015–2017. In thematic terms, however, this dataset is less detailed, in that it only differentiates between forest and non-forest covers. TanDEM-X Forest/Non-Forest also provides information on the forest extent at high spatial resolution (50 m). However, the map is only available for one point in time. Like Global FNF, it was also obtained from the classification of radar data.

AbstractIndolent non-Hodgkin lymphoma (iNHL), including follicular (FL) and marginal zone (MZL) lymphoma, now enjoy durable disease control with first-line immunochemotherapy, with a median overall survival (OS) of over 15 years in most series (Kahl and Yang 2016). However, iNHL is still widely considered incurable in most cases, and disease history remains characterized by a relapsing and remitting course, with each remission period shorter than the previous one, and OS and progression-free survival (PFS) decrease with each subsequent line of conventional therapy (Batlevi et al. 2020). Patients with unmet needs include approximately 20% of FL patients who experience disease progression within 24 months (POD24) after initial chemoimmunotherapy (with a 5-year OS of 48% (Casulo et al. 2015)—although it remains unclear how much this worse outcome is driven by misdiagnosed transformed follicular lymphoma (Freeman et al. 2019)) and those who fail multiple regimens (5-year PFS of 23%) (Rivas-Delgado et al. 2019) have double refractory disease (Gopal et al. 2017) or experience relapse after autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) (Sesques et al. 2020). Although promising results were obtained with an immunomodulatory regimen combining anti-C20 Moab and lenalidomide (Leonard et al. 2019; Morschhauser et al. 2019), most current approved therapies do not overcome incremental disease resistance, resulting in multiple lines of treatment with cumulative toxicity over a patient’s lifetime. The autologous anti-CD19 chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapies tisa-cel and axi-cel, which are now approved for patients with relapsed/refractory (r/r) large B cell lymphoma (LBCL), have also been tested in iNHL, with promising results.

AbstractIn Southern Europe there’s a specific issue regarding young people – the focus of our overheated identities. Not only do youth unemployment rates in the Mediterranean remain among the highest in Europe, but these countries also perform poorly in at least two of the three dimensions of job quality, which are: the quality of earnings, or the extent to which workers’ earnings from their job contribute to their well-being; labor market security; and the quality of the working environment (OECD, Society at a glance 2019, 2019). Like Spain and Greece, Italy is always at the top of the Eurostat tables for important problems (see NEET rates: with the pandemic, the number of young people aged 15–29 who are not in education, employment or training in Italy increased from 22.1 percent in 2019 to 23.3 percent in 2020 and 24 percent in 2021 There are more than two million NEETs in Italy - boys and girls who are neither studying nor working and more than 97,000 young people have left their work or study paths in the last year. AbstractIncome inequality in the United States has been growing since the 1980s and is particularly noticeable in large urban areas like the Chicago metro region. While not as high as New York or Los Angeles, the Gini Coefficient for the Chicago metro area (.48) was the same as the United States in 2015 but rising at a faster rate, suggesting it will surpass the US national level in 2020. This chapter examines the Chicago region’s growing income inequality since 1980 using US Census data collected in 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2015, focusing on where people live based on occupation as well as income. When mapped out, the data shows a city and region that is becoming more segregated by occupation and income as it becomes both richer and poorer. A result is a shrinking number of middle-class and mixed neighbourhoods. The resulting patterns of socioeconomic spatial segregation also align with patterns of racial/ethnic segregation attributed to historical housing development and market segmentation, as well as recent efforts to advance Chicago as a global city through tourism and real estate development.

AbstractInformal settlements are perceptible material expressions of internal and cross-border migration in South Africa. New arrivals, drawn to urban centres in search of economic opportunities, find a residence in one of the high-density informal settlements dotted around the economic hub of South Africa, the Gauteng province. It is projected that an estimated 1.6 million migrants, including 48% of all immigrants in South Africa, will make Gauteng province their home by 2021 (Stats SA, 2018a). However, instead of better conditions, rural-urban and urban-urban migrants as well as undocumented and documented immigrants experience a lack of service delivery in health, education, road infrastructure, security, electricity, water and sanitation (Marutlulle, 2017). The lack of provision of basic services and resources from the government at such sites often results in community protests and translates into attacks against immigrants residing in those communities.

In order to enhance fiscal sustainability and regain “investment grade” credit rating, in 2011 Colombia implemented a fiscal rule (FR) on the Central Government's structural balance. Investment grade was rapidly attained, and FR targets were complied with, until 2019. Using the Synthetic Control Method, we provide evidence that the FR promoted fiscal discipline. Nevertheless, public debt has increased continuously and is now expected to exceed 60 percent of GDP, in large part driven by the pandemic.
