Abstract:
This dissertation offers a new look at the Pore Caitif, a late-fourteenth century treatise of doctrine and devotion. Taking into account recent scholarship in the field of manuscript studies, particularly `materialist philology' which focusses on the entire codex rather than a text in isolation, the dissertation seeks to elucidate some of the textual and cultural contexts of the Pore Caitif. It is argued that taking the entire corpus of miscellaneous codices containing the Pore Caitif as the point of departure for investigation can help to arrive at an understanding of the nature and the use o

Abstract:
This thesis provides a new analysis of late medieval personal devotion to angels in England, built upon freshly compiled primary evidence. This evidence consists of devotional material collected from a large sample of fifteenth-century Latin manuscript Books of Hours either produced in England or produced elsewhere for the English market. The use of a properly constructed sample of manuscripts in this research has provided a large and varied body of material for analysis. This thesis examines the function and transmission of late medieval visionary writings with devotional instructions between enclosed convents in England, the Low Countries and German-speaking areas. It argues that religious women, who could not normally assert authority as religious teachers and writers, used devotional instructions, to which they or others had attributed divine origins, to authoritatively teach their communities to develop more disciplined religious lives and to identify more intimately with Christ. The primary objective of this thesis is to reconsider the significance of the canonical portrayal of Moses the intercessor in the aftermath of "documentary" pentateuchal criticism. Not disregarding the diachronic dimension of the text, at the heart of this study is a close theological reading of Exodus 32-34 and Numbers 13-14 in their final form with focus on the nature and theological function of Moses' prayers. The aim was to utilise an understanding of the dynamics of past provision to shed light upon present practice and planning for the future: focussing upon that form of ‘difference’ which has been given the name ‘learning difficulty’. The research utilised records, interviews, narratives and discussion groups to explore the experiences of providers of services, service users and those who were

Abstract:
For economical and ecological reasons, efficiency and profitability ofswine production relies heavily on the way pigs utilize key nutrients such as P,which is considered a potential pollutant of water ecosystems. Although cerealgrains and oilseed meals contain enough P to fulfill the biological needs of pigs, most of this P is tightly bound as phytate. As pigs do not have enough phytase(PHY) to cleave P from phytate, it is excreted in the feces. To prevent adeficiency, diets have traditionally been supplemented with highly availableinorganic sources of P. Today, an environmentally-friendly alte

Abstract:
A single-phase, buck-boost based, dual-output AC-DC converter is studied in this thesis. The converter has two DC outputs with opposite polarities, which share the same ground with the input power line. The power stage performance, including the input filter, is studied and procedure to select power components is given. The circuit model is analyzed to develop appropriate control. Zerocrossing distortion of the source input current is addressed and a solution is proposed. Experimental results are satisfactory in that a high power factor line current results for steady-state operation.

Abstract:
Recent experimental work reported the synthesis, isolation and characterization of a “Russian-doll”-style endohedral fullerene, encompassing a carbon dimer within a scandium tetrahedron, all encased by a C80 cage. We have first investigated the equilibrium conformations and the associated charge transfer of the endohedral fullerene Sc4C2C80 based on first-principles density functional calculations; and secondly its electronic properties based on first-principles density functional calculations coupled with many-body GW correction. In the first part our results show that a distorted tetrahedron

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of the analysis of knowledge. The persistent failure of analyses of knowledge in terms of necessary and sufficient conditions is used to motivate exploring alternative approaches to the analytical problem. In parallel to a similar development in the theory of truth, in which the persistent failure to provide a satisfactory answer to the question as to what the nature of truth is has led to the exploration of deflationary and minimalist approaches to the theory of truth, the prospects for deflationary and minimalist approaches to the theory of knowledge are inv

Worldwide, the prevalence of overweight and obesity is ascending. It is a leading public health problem and major economic burden, because of physical illnesses like congestive heart failure and psychological effects including depression, low self-esteem, frustration and disparagement of body image. Furthermore the ideal of being thin is reinforced socially and by the media. University students and adolescents are specifically vulnerable and likely to engage in potentially harmful, unhealthy weight control practices i.e. laxatives, and diet pills. Sambasivan, Raja R. "Diagnosing performance changes in distributed systems by comparing request flows." Research Showcase @ CMU, 2013. http://repository.cmu.edu/dissertations/242.

Abstract:
Diagnosing performance problems in modern datacenters and distributed systems is challenging, as the root cause could be contained in any one of the system’s numerous components or, worse, could be a result of interactions among them. As distributed systems continue to increase in complexity, diagnosis tasks will only become more challenging. There is a need for a new class of diagnosis techniques capable of helping developers address problems in these distributed environments. As a step toward satisfying this need, this dissertation proposes a novel technique, called request-flow comparison,
