Liu, John, and G. Holmes. "Biotechnology for environmently-friendly leather production - 297." Verein für Gerberei-Chemie und -Technik e. V, 2019. https://slub.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A34329.

Abstract:
Content: The leather industry has been challenged to reduce its environmental impact, for example, by producing eco-friendly products with inherent biodegradability using less polluting chemicals. Conventional depilation of hair and wool consumes a large amount of lime and sodium sulphide, which poses a serious waste disposal concern. Volatile organosulphur compounds remaining in leather products may provoke an unpleasant odour and be the cause of a deterioration in indoor air quality. Traditional leather production also generates tanned waste which cannot be readily degraded by microorganisms. LASRA research is guiding the application of biotechnology to help the New Zealand leather industry develop environmentally sustainable leather processes, replacing hazardous chemicals with microbial enzymes. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we have isolated and identified a number of indigenous bacteria from the leather industry environment which are being adopted to develop benign leather processing technologies. We discovered a strain of Stenotrophomonas spp. with significant and beneficial proteolytic activity in a tannery sludge. The identified strain not only displays collagenase activity but also the ability to reduce hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium, making it an ideal candidate for biodegradation of tanned waste. We also isolated and identified several Bacillus spp. strains from a biofilter used in a leather manufacturing plant which exhibited sulphide oxidation activity, which are being applied in bioremediation of volatile organosulphur compounds emitted by leather products. Recently we revisited the natural autolytic processes of degradation of untreated pelts to guide a natural depilation method without any need for additional chemical treatment. The characterisation of the bacteria isolated from the skins showed the alkaline protease production activity responsible for the observed nature unhairing. We found that in controlled experiments the wool could be removed completely from follicles after 2 days, without obvious damage and leathers could be processed with organoleptic and mechanical properties comparable to conventionally processed counterparts. With the mechanisms revealed, the natural depilation can be controlled to become more reliable and reproducible across a range of conditions. Our current work is focused on the development of solid-state fermentation using skin and leather waste as a culture medium to produce the required enzymes to make biological leather production practical and reproducible. Our research is aimed at enabling the NZ leather industry to produce highquality leather products with a much-reduced environmental footprint. Take-Away: 1. Indigenous bacteria have been isolated and identified from the leather industry environment by the application of 16S rRNA gene sequencing. 2. Biodegradation of tanned waste and bioremediation of volatile organosulphur compounds are being developed. 3. The mechanism of natural depilation has been revealed and the application of enzymatic depilation can become practicable by using solid-state fermentation.

Seet, Shawn Ginn Ming. "Genome sequence of bacteriophage OAR29: a basis for integrative plasmid vectors." Seet, Shawn Ginn Ming (2005) Genome sequence of bacteriophage OAR29: a basis for integrative plasmid vectors. PhD thesis, Murdoch University, 2005. http://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/297/.

Full text
Abstract:
The initial aim of this project was to characterise the integrative recombination mechanism of bacteriophage OAR29 , to provide a better understanding for development of the shuttle plasmid pBA as a site-specific Bacteroides integration vector. RT-PCR showed that the previously identified OAR29 recombination genes, integrase (Int) and excisionase (Xis), were transcribed from pBA in E. coli SCS110, B. thetaiotaomicron AR29 and B. uniformis AR20. In silico derived amino acid sequences from both genes showed only very low levels of similarity to other known Int and Xis in GenBank. To improve understanding of the phage recombination system, the OAR29 genome was sequenced. This revealed a 35,558 bp double-stranded DNA genome with GC content of 39.11%. Bioinformatic analysis identified 53 open reading frames (>30 codons) and gene promoters and terminators that allowed the genome arrangement to be compared with other phages. Comparison of deduced gene products with proteins from other phages identified 6 reading frames, allowed tentative identification of 7 others, but left 40 ORFs unidentified. Those with strong homology to known genes were: large terminase subunit (44.66 kDa), dnaC (27.94 kDa), helix-turn-helix (HTH) transcription regulator (14.69 kDa), cI repressor (26.48 kDa), amidase (18.42kDa) and a novel integrase (54.22 kDa). The integrase gene is located 162 base-pairs downstream of the phage attachment (attP) core site, rather than the previously suggested location upstream of the integration site. The OAR29 attP was shown to include a 16-bp att core region, 117 bp upstream of the previously suggested location. Integration of OAR29 was found to occur at the 3'end of an arg-tRNA gene on the AR29 genome (attB). Imperfect direct repeats with a consensus sequence (ANGTTGTGCAA) were found surrounding the attP core. A review of pBA sequence showed that only the 5' end (435 bp) of the newly identified Int gene was cloned in pBA. Despite this, PCR analysis revealed integration of pBA into the AR29 genome. Serial subculturing of pBA transformed AR29 was able to cure AR29 of the OAR29 prophage, providing an improved host for integrative plasmids, and for detailed studies of AR29 physiology and OAR29 life cycles.

Mueller, Cornelius Matthias F. "Resources and signalling to attract venture capital : university spin-outs in the UK." Thesis, Durham University, 2010. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/297/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores why some university spin-outs (USOs) are able to attract first venture capital (VC) investment. Furthermore, factors including first VC investment are associated with USO’s superior firm performance. The resource-based view (RBV) of the firm is replicated and extended with signalling theory. VC firms (supply-side seeking to reduce uncertainty and information asymmetry problems request positive ‘signals’ from entrepreneurs and firms (demand-side). Entrepreneurs can provide such ‘signals of quality’ relating to their own as well as their firms’ resources. Hypotheses were derived accordingly. This is the first nationwide study using cross-sectional data from British USOs on a firm and founder level related to attracting first VC investment and firm performance. A population of 505 British USOs founded between 1990 and 2007 that were still active in 2008 was identified. Founders of 125 USOs participated in an online survey (25% response rate). No response biases were detected. Secondary data sources provided information on financing and performance. Hypotheses were tested with regression techniques. Key findings on the attraction of first VC investment support the joint framework of the RBV of the firm and signalling theory. The most prominent signals of quality were experienced and reputable founding teams (specific human capital), network links to VC investors (networks), firm-owned IP, patented IP (intellectual capital) and founders who were professor (general human capital). USOs with public backed equity (finance) avoided an ‘equity gap’ when seeking less than £500,000 of VC. USOs with radical innovation (intellectual capital) were less likely to attract generalist VC firms. Key findings on factors related to superior firm performance suggest the importance of USO’s internal resources as implied by the RBV of the firm. Strategic alliances (networks) and USOs with VC investment reported superior firm performance. However, generalist VC firms performed better than industry specialists. VC investment reduced the direct influence of experienced and reputable founding teams (specific human capital) and founders who were professors (general human capital) related to firm performance. Former important signals to attract first VC investment such as patented IP, firm-owned IP (intellectual capital) and public backed equity investments (finance) were not related to firm performance. Best practices and recommendations on how USOs can overcome barriers to attracting first VC investment and achieve superior firm performance are made for several practitioner groups. Limitations and areas of future research are discussed.

Zanoun, Louisa. "Interwar politics in a French border region : the Moselle in the period of the Popular Front, 1934-1938." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2009. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/297/.

Full text
Abstract:
Between 1934 and 1936 various organisations of the French left joined forces to create the Popular Front, an alliance borne of an antifascist imperative. After winning the May 1936 legislative elections, and in a climate of growing opposition from conservative and far right forces, the left-wing coalition came to power. By the end of 1938, the Popular Front had collapsed and the right was back in power. During this period (1934-1938), the right and far right repeatedly challenged the left-wing alliance‟s legitimacy and attacked its constituent political parties. This conflict between left and right intensified France‟s political and social tensions and polarised French politics and French society into supporters and opponents of the Popular Front. This thesis examines the role of the right within the context of the Popular Front and seeks to answer the following question: how did the right act in response to the Popular Front between 1934 and 1938? The thesis focuses on the Moselle, a border département returned to French sovereignty after forty-seven years under German domination (1871-1918). By 1934, the Moselle had developed a distinctive political character sympathetic to the right and hostile, or at best indifferent, to the left. By drawing parallels between Parisian and Mosellan events and using new archival material, the thesis demonstrates the originality of the Popular Front in the Moselle, and the responses of the local, and essentially Catholic and particularist, right. No scholarly work has yet examined the conflict between the right and the left within the context of the Popular Front in the Moselle. This thesis demonstrates how the département's distinctive historical, social, linguistic, cultural, political and religious context shaped the Popular Front and the right‟s responses to it.

Hartley, Jo. "Transgressing the skin : a phenomenological study into the transition to motherhood." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2005. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/297/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to illuminate the experience of early mothering for a small group of first-time mothers from the Southof England in 2001. Central to this were the detailed descriptions, as recounted by the women, of the way in which they gradually adapted to being mothers. In this phenomenological inquiry seven women shared their stories with me. The interview took place at a time and place of the women's choosing and they were asked to describe,in as much detail as possible, the way in which they had experienced "becoming a munf'. Each womantook a unique and circuitous journey to mothering and their narratives were rich and evocative, revealing the complexity of the transformative process. The datawere analysed using a descriptive phenomenological approach, which revealed seven constituents contained within a general structure. Although the women interviewed provided notably contrasting descriptions, underlying and uniting their individual experiences was the general structure. This can be summarised as, "Becoming a mother for the first time introduced some fundamental changes into the woman's manner of being in the world. Essentially, this concerned the development of a new becoming-a-mother-change-of-body subjectivity in which the woman was required to re-order her way of being in all its existential dimensions. The new mother sought to integrate and authenticate this challenging life event within her biography-she manifested both an openness to the beloved child and a resistance to the truncation of her existential possibilities." This is not to say that the women all experienced the phenomenon in the sameway, instead there were particular essential constituents through which each woman negotiated her transforming journey into motherhood. Some women assimilated these changes to their embodied self with ease, others struggled and resisted, feeling assailed and overwhelmed. The seven constituents are: " Welcoming the intimate stranger " Anxious loving " The baby fills her vision " Acceptance:from crisis to comprehension " Exhaustion, recovery and the physical body " Relationships:re-evaluation and conflict " Isolation, ambivalenceandtears The data also challenged mainstream understanding of postnatal depression as a discreet, diagnosable illness. Becominga mother is a transition that compels women to make radical re-adjustments to every aspect of their manner of 'being-in-the-world'. It would be extraordinary if this did not cause significant levels of distress,dis-equilibrium and a sense of chaotic disorganisation.I propose that distress in early mothering is understood as a normal reaction to a significant life-changing event. Implications for clinical practice and further research are also discussed.

Hartigan, Alex. "The effects of multiple forms of disgust exposure on the processing of emotional photographic images." Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2017. http://bbktheses.da.ulcc.ac.uk/297/.

Full text
Abstract:
Exposure to disgust has been found to influence both short term attentional processes and decision making. This thesis proposed to investigate the extent to which disgust exposure can also influence emotion processing and evaluation – specifically of real world photographic images. To this end, both behavioural and event related potential (ERP) paradigms were utilised. Disgust was induced in multiple ways – through videos, written scenarios and briefly presented prime images. After exposure to disgusting prime images, participants high in disgust propensity were quicker to respond to disgust targets (a congruence effect that was not obtained for fear targets preceded by fear primes). After reading disgusting sentences, participants who were high in disgust propensity were more likely to judge pleasant food images (as well as disgusting images) as unpleasant (but not other pleasant images) thus reconfirming the relationship between disgust and digestion. ERP data revealed that individuals high in attentional shifting ability had a suppressed Late Positive Potential (LPP) to both disgusting and threatening images but that this effect was washed out through reading disgusting scenarios. After exposure to disgusting videos, attentional focus was associated with an increased LPP response to disgust (but not fear) images. There was a strong occipital LPP enhancement for disgust (over both fear and neutral) that was independent of disgust exposure and could represent an electrophysiological marker of disgust processing. The results demonstrate that both the processing of disgusting images, as well as the processing of emotional images of a variety of content (both positive and negative), can be affected by disgust exposure. These effects can be seen early in processing and also influence later emotional assessments, and are strongly dependent on individual differences in disgust propensity and attentional control. The results highlight the extent to which disgust can influence multiple short-term emotion processing mechanisms.

Hosseini, Seid Majdeddin Mir Mohammad. "Stress-strain behaviour of granular soils under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1987. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/297/.

Full text
Abstract:
The stress-strain behaviour of granular soils under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions and small lateral strains was studied in this work. A simple cubic triaxial apparatus (SCTA), originally developed at Leeds University for monotonic stress-strain studies of sand under controlled and small lateral strains, was used in this investigation. The three principal stresses and strains can be independentLy controlled and measured in this apparatus. The SCTA was modified and further developed to allow cyclic stress-strain studies of granular soils-to be performed. To increase the stress-strain data available on granular soils similar tests to those previously carried out on the medium sand, were performed on fine and coarse sands under monotonic loading conditions. The samples tested were cubic of 150 mm side length and prepared with ranges of initial porosities in a dry condition. To study the cyclic stress-strain behaviour of sand at small strains, a series of new tests on similar cubic samples of the medium sand were performed under cyclic loading conditions. Cyclic loads with different frequencies, amplitudes and number of cycles were applied and the samples were prepared dry at the loosest and densest conditions. Values of the coefficients of active pressure, earth pressure at rest, constrained secant modulus, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio for the fine, medium and coarse sands were obtained and compared for different conditions. The relationships between vertical and lateral stresses are found and the volume change behaviour of sands in different conditions are studied. Finally some comparisons are made between the results obtained from monotonic and cyclic loading conditions.

Jenkins, Ian. "Writing Islam : representations of Muhammad, the Qur'an and Islamic belief and the construction of Muslim identity in early modern Britain." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2007. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54655/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the representations of Islam and of Muslims in English writing during the early modern period, with particular focus on the influence of the contents of the sub-genre of the polemic biography of Muhammad as a template for the construction of these representations. I will argue that the distorted representations of the figure of Muhammad contained in these biographies functioned as a prototype for the production of a series of essentialising views of Muslim identity which were then replicated throughout the textual production on Islam during the period. The study identifies the recurring themes of deception, gender and sexuality, and violence in the representations of Muhammad contained in the polemic biographies and then seeks to trace the recurrence of these thematic areas in the wider body of textual production on Islam during the period, with the aim of identifying the contents of the polemic biographies as a hermeneutical tool in the interpretation of Islam and Muslims. In examining the influence of the polemic biographies of Muhammad in the construction of Muslim identities in early modern English writing the thesis analyses examples of these biographies which occur in texts from in a wide variety of generic backgrounds over hundreds of years, including religious tracts, histories and travelers' accounts of the 'Islamic world' and will then examine the echoes of these thematic areas of representation contained in the polemic biographies in other areas of literary production, and in particular within the series of 'Turk plays' produced on the early modern stage. This thesis also examines the availability of materials on Islam in Britain during the early modern period and investigates the series of ideological and theological positions which informed the approaches to the subject of Islam in English texts. There are also six appendices which deal in more detail with issues important to the overall thesis, a discussion of which, in the main body of the work, would have interrupted the argument. The reader is referred to these when relevant.

LaRossa, Christopher. "The development of Islamic political thought in relation to the West during the mid-twentieth century." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3130.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is about the development of Islamic political thought in relation to the West during the mid-twentieth century. It utilizes the ideas and writings of the Islamic thinkers Sayyid Qutb of Egypt, Ali Shariati of Iran, and Jalal Al-e Ahmad of Iran to illustrate this development. These figures reacted severely to Westernization (argued to constitute colonialism, materialism, and secularism) as they saw it. This research will argue that their reaction was due to the fatally corrosive effects each figure believed this was having upon Islamic civil society and the Islamic moral economy, both in their respective home homelands and throughout the greater global Ummah. Their perspective is unique because they were critiquing the West based upon their experiences while in the West, and using Western intellectual ideas to do so. This was done, this research contends, in reaction to aspects of Edward Said's Orientalism discourse. Qutb, Shariati, and Al-e Ahmad's reaction to the West, this research also argues, displays aspects of Friedrich Nietzsche's thought, namely that when an entity (in this case, Islam) encounters the West, God is lost in that encounter. Additionally, this research argues that Qutb, Shariati, and Al-e Ahmad sought to counter the loss of God in Islamic civil society and halt the influence of Westernization as they saw it via the political realm through the use of the Quran as law and government, thereby permanently restoring God to Islamic civil society and salvaging the Islamic moral economy.

Kuhn, Michael F. "Defending divine unity in the Muslim milieu : the Trinitarian and Christological formulations of Abū al-Faraj ‘Abd Allāh Ibn al-Ṭayyib and Iliyyā of Nisibis." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2017. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/21633/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examines two prominent theologians of the Assyrian Church of the East who responded to Islam’s perennial objections to the Christian Trinity and Christology. The theologians in question are Abū al-Faraj ʽAbd Allāh Ibn al-Ṭayyib (d. 1043/434) and Bishop Iliyyā of Nisibis (d. 1046/437). Both men were characterized by a remarkable literary production marking them out among the intellectual elite of their day as polymaths. The research discusses the two theologians as examples of Christian theological response in the Arab Muslim milieu. Ibn al-Ṭayyib, though recognized as an exegete, has not been noted for his contribution to Muslim-Christian discourse. The thesis identifies his response in his theological treatises. Though he did not engage with a specific dialogue partner nor even mention Islam explicitly, the questions he considered correspond unmistakably to the themes of the Muslim-Christian interface. The research features this implicit defence of divine unity in Ibn al-Ṭayyib’s theological formulations. Iliyyā of Nisibis, on the other hand, enjoyed a productive dialogue with the Shi’īte Vizier (Minister of State) of the Marwanid Dynasty (located in eastern Syria and Western Turkey today). The research highlights the ‘agnostic inquisitiveness’ of Abū al-Qāsim in tandem with the tawḥīd rhetoric of Iliyyā which occasioned one of the most promising examples of Muslim-Christian discourse of the medieval period known as The Sessions. Other works of Iliyyā are also considered. Both theologians dealt with critical questions posed by Muslim intellectuals concerning the Christian definition of divine unity in light of their Trinitarian and Christological formulations. The Christians claim divine unity (tawḥīd) as a correct descriptor of their view as they seek to secure the inclusion of their community in the fold of monotheism. Key questions include the definition of the Trinitarian hypostases and their relation to the divine essence (How can God be one and three?). The nature of the union of divinity and humanity in Christ is equally critical given that Muslims viewed the incarnation as an egregious example of shirk (associating the Creator with the created — polytheism). The two theologians borrowed from and developed the theological constructs of their predecessors as demonstrated by the thesis. Other topics include: the shaping of theological constructs by the Muslim milieu, lexical amendments due to Arabic and Islamic terminology, the duality of the hypostases in Christ proffered by the Church of the East (‘Nestorian’) and social and political implications of Christian adherence to divine unity. The research concludes with a discussion of implications of divine Trinitarian unity in today’s Arab Muslim world.

Abstract:
Dawat-e-Islami. (DI) is a worldwide Islamic movement based in Karachi, Pakistan. Its mission statement, "I must strive to reform myself and people of the entire world", points to an emphasis on individual reform which can lead to a broader social reform. This reform is to be achieved through tableegh, eschewing what are considered to be 'contemporary forms of politics' and calling for a revival of core Islamic traditions of akhlaq, huqooq-ul-ibaad, and ilm-e-deen. Allamah Muhammad Ilyas Qadri, the ameer ofDI, cites Imam Ahmed Raza Khan (1856-1921), a preeminent Islamic scholar considered by many to be the mujaddid of his time, to be a singular source of guidance and inspiration in his mission. In this study, I will seek to understand how this connection manifests itself in the development of Dl's reformist mission. I argue that the work of Imam Ahmed Raza has been used to construct a discourse of social reform aimed at bringing to fruition an Islamic revival which DI understands to have been at the heart of the Imam's intellectual and spiritual legacy. Through an analysis of framing processes, I will examine how DI's mission of social reform has been shaped by the work ofImam Ahmed Raza, with a particular focus on how the religious discourse which constitutes the Imam's scholarly corpus has been used to develop collective action frames aimed at addressing social issues. Using written and multimedia texts, I will explore how these frames have been articulated and amplified in a social context and why these 'transformed' frames have resonated with audiences where conventional religious discourse has not.

Lalama, Susana M. "A Comparison of Student and Teacher Perceptions of Classroom Management in Secondary Band Rehearsals in Florida Schools." Scholarly Repository, 2011. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_theses/297.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to compare student and teacher perceptions of classroom management in secondary band rehearsals in Florida schools. Twenty-one schools participated with ensemble teachers (N = 34) and their students (N = 749). Participants were surveyed collecting information for the variables of teacher expectations, teacher behaviors, teacher expectation congruency, teacher behavior congruency, and student rehearsal conduct. Demographic information was also collected for teachers, students, and schools. Descriptive analyses reveal that teachers and students had similar mean scores, however teachers consistently had higher mean scores for teacher expectations and teacher behaviors. MANOVA results suggest that teachers and students have different interpretations of teacher expectations. Regression results found that teacher expectations congruency, teacher gender, and teacher experience level were predictors of student rehearsal conduct. The majority of participating teachers claimed that student misbehavior was not a problem they were consistently addressing. When asked for reasons why they feel students misbehave, the largest response placed fault with the students, followed by performance-related, family-related, and the least accountable was teacher-related.

Birnbaum-Weitzman, Orit. "CBSM Effects on Sickness Behavior and Pro-Inflammatory Cytokine Mechanisms in Breast Cancer Survivors." Scholarly Repository, 2009. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_dissertations/297.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of sickness behavior offers a framework to view both the neurovegetative and psychological symptoms that accompany illness as a common entity that results from increased inflammatory activation. Despite the prevalence of sickness behavior in medical populations, to our knowledge this study provides the first attempt to develop a standardized measure to assess sickness behavior using standard self-report questionnaires commonly used with cancer patients. The set of items included in the measure match theoretical conceptualizations of sickness behavior and target symptoms that comprise anhedonia, depressed mood, cognitive dysfunction, social disinterest, fatigue, low libido, poor appetite, somnolence, sensitivity to pain, and malaise. The measure showed high internal consistency, adequate test-retest reliability, and good convergent validity with both psychological and biological correlates. A confirmatory factor analysis also determined that a two-factor, rather than a single-factor measurement model, encompassing a physical and a psychological sickness symptom dimension, accounted for sickness behavior. Future psychometric work is still needed to further validate this new practical assessment tool. Descriptive analyses revealed relatively low levels of sickness behavior symptoms in the sample as a whole with both physical and psychological sickness behavior symptoms exhibiting a significant linear decrease over time. As expected, both physical and psychological sickness behavior symptoms showed associations with two pro-inflammatory cytokine markers, IL6 and TNF-alpha and a neuroendocrine marker, cortisol. Longitudinal associations suggest that higher levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-alpha may impact the progressive decline of physical sickness symptoms over time with symptoms taking longer to disappear. Because cortisol was associated with more rather than less physical sickness symptoms, results raise the question of whether the anti-inflammatory neuroendocrine activity may be dysregulated in breast cancer survivors. The mechanistic basis for these associations requires further examination. In this study it was also evaluated whether a cognitive behavioral stress management intervention and relaxation training intervention could reduce sickness symptoms over time. Breast cancer survivors were assessed at baseline and then randomly assigned to a 10-week cognitive behavioral stress management intervention (N = 70) or a 1-day control condition (N = 55). Psychosocial measures, urine, and blood were obtained from participants at 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months post-intervention to assess relevant behavioral, endocrine and immune variables. Relative to the control group, the experimental group showed marginally more prevalence of physical sickness behavior symptoms in the short term (post-intervention, 3-months; p = .08) and a steadier decline of symptoms in the long-term (15-month follow-up period). The adaptive nature of sickness behavior as a motivational strategy that helps restore homeostatic balance in the long run may be one possible interpretation of these results. Whether these intervention effects on sickness behavior were mediated by changes in pro-inflammatory cytokines or cortisol was examined but not supported by these data and needs to be further examined in future studies.

Abstract:
Climatological winds over the equatorial Indian Ocean (EqlO) are westerly most of the year. Twice a year, in April-May ("spring") and October-December ("fall"), strong, sustained westerly winds generate eastward equatorial jets in the ocean. There are several unresolved issues related to the equatorial jets. They accelerate rapidly to speeds over lms"1 when westerly wind stress increases to about 0.7 dyne cm"2 in spring and fall, but decelerate while the wind stress continues to be westerly; each jet is followed by westward flow in the upper ocean lasting a month or longer. In addition to the semi-annual cycle, the equatorial winds and currents have strong in-traseasonal fluctuations. Observations show strong 30-60 day variability of zonal flow, and suggest that there might be variability with periods shorter than 20 days in the central EqlO. Observations from moored current meter arrays along 80.5°E south of Sri Lanka showed a distinct 15 day oscillation of equatorial meridional velocity (v) and off-equatorial zonal velocity (u). Recent observations from current meter moorings at the equator in the eastern EqlO show continuous 10-20 day, or biweekly, oscillations of v. The main motivation for the present study is to understand the dynamics of intraseasonal variability in the Indian Ocean that has been documented in the observational literature. What physical processes are responsible for the peculiar behavior of the equatorial jets? What are the relative roles of wind stress and large scale ocean dynamics? Does intraseasonal variability of wind stress force intraseasonal jets? What is the structure and origin of the biweekly variability? The intraseasonal and longer timescale variability of the equatorial Indian Ocean circulation is studied using an ocean general circulation model (OGCM) and recent in Abstract ii situ observations. The OGCM simulations are validated against other available observations. In this thesis, we document the space-time structure of the variability of equatorial Indian Ocean circulation, and attempt to find answers to some of the questions raised above. The main results are based on OGCM simulations forced by high frequency reanalysis and satellite scatterometer (QuikSCAT) winds. Several model experiments with idealized winds are used to interpret the results of the simulations. In addition to the OGCM simulations, the origin of observed intraseasonal anomalies of sea surface temperature (SST) in the eastern EqlO and Bay of Bengal, and related air-sea interaction, are investigated using validated satellite data. The main findings of the thesis can be summarized as: • High frequency accurate winds are required for accurate simulation of equatorial Indian Ocean currents, which have strong variability on intraseasonal to interannual time scales. • The variability in the equatorial waveguide is mainly driven by variability of the winds; there is some intraseasonal variability near the western boundary and in the equatorial waveguide due to dynamic instability of seasonal "mean" flows. • The fall equatorial jet is generally stronger and longer lived than the spring jet; the fall jet is modulated on intraseasonal time scales. Westerly wind bursts can drive strong intraseasonal equatorial jets in the eastern EqlO during the summer monsoon. • Eastward equatorial jets create a westward zonal pressure gradient force by raising sea level, and deepening the thermocline, in the east relative to the west. The zonal pressure force relaxes via Rossby wave radiation from the eastern boundary. • The zonal pressure force exerts strong control on the evolution of zonal flow; the decel eration of the eastward jets, and the subsequent westward flow in the upper ocean in the presence of westerly wind stress, is due to the zonal pressure force. • Neither westward currents in the upper ocean nor subsurface eastward flow (the ob served spring and summer "undercurrent") requires easterly winds; they can be gener ated by equatorial adjustment due to Kelvin (Rossby) waves generated at the western (eastern) boundary. • The biweekly variability in the EqlO is associated with forced mixed Rossby-gravity (MRG) waves generated by intraseasonal variability of winds. The biweekly MRG wave in has westward and upward phase propagation, zonal wavelength of 3000-4500 km and phase speed of 4 m s"1; it is associated with deep off equatorial upwelling/downwelling. Intraseasonal SST anomalies are forced mainly by net heat flux anomalies in the central and eastern EqlO; the large northward propagating SST anomalies in summer in the Bay of Bengal are due to net heat flux anomalies associated with the monsoon active-break cycle. Coherent variability in the atmosphere and ocean suggests air-sea interaction.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Specifically, do long-term benefits from the FCPA outweigh short-term burdens? The paper begins with a short Introduction that provides a roadmap for the overall thesis. Chapter I discusses the business and economic environment of America during the 1970s. Specifically, the focus is on the Watergate scandal and how it played a crucial role in the enactment of the FCPA. Chapter II explains and analyzes specific provisions of the FCPA. It also demonstrates the FCPA‟s relationship to the Securities and Exchange Act of 1934 and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. Chapter III provides a cost/benefit analysis of the FCPA, particularly by looking at the short-term burdens and the long-term benefits of the act. Chapter IV provides two case studies. My conclusion is that with proper adjustments, long-term benefits from the FCPA can outweigh short-term burdens.

Full text
Abstract:
Clustering is a mathematical method of data analysis which identifies trends in data by efficiently separating data into a specified number of clusters so is incredibly useful and widely applicable for questions of interrelatedness of data. Two methods of clustering are considered here. K-means clustering defines clusters in relation to the centroid, or center, of a cluster. Spectral clustering establishes connections between all of the data points to be clustered, then eliminates those connections that link dissimilar points. This is represented as an eigenvector problem where the solution is given by the eigenvectors of the Normalized Graph Laplacian. Spectral clustering establishes groups so that the similarity between points of the same cluster is stronger than similarity between different clusters. K-means and spectral clustering are used to analyze adolescent data from the 2009 California Health Interview Survey. Differences were observed between the results of the clustering methods on 3294 individuals and 22 health-related attributes. K-means clustered the adolescents by exercise, poverty, and variables related to psychological health while spectral clustering groups were informed by smoking, alcohol use, low exercise, psychological distress, low parental involvement, and poverty. We posit some guesses as to this difference, observe characteristics of the clustering methods, and comment on the viability of spectral clustering on healthcare data.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to rebuild the fellowship between Valentino Bompiani and Libero Bigiaretti on the basis of the unpublished correspondence found in publisher's private archives and publishing house's ones. In the two protagonists' personality, and in the reasons implied in their intellectual work, there is a fair appreciation of the human and professional relationship passed between the author and his publisher starting from the early 70's, a time of important changes in the company structure, which ends with the sell of the brand name in 1973. It's due to the publisher's undisputed desire to be the centre of attention the peculiarity of the relationship with the author form the Marche (to his friend Valentino he entrusted the reprint of his past works and also the print of the future ones), a relationship that adds important particulars to the reconstruction of many aspects; the letters show especially, among joys and disillusions, moods and confessions that explain, in a clear way, Bigiaretti's creative and inner development in the more mature phase oh his narrative experience, that led to new results above all from the expressive point of view. The large number of references, in the exchange of letters, to Bigiaretti's writing and poetics – in a continuous comparison with Bompiani, faithful confidant and charmed reader – find a correspondence in the drafts (in Bigiaretti's own hand) of the analyzed novels, proving, at the same time, the author's strenuous labour limae.

Ibrahim, Mariam. "Tobacco Smoke and Asthma among Adults at the National and State Levels: Do Smoke-Free Laws and Regulations Affect Smoking Rate among those with Asthma?" Digital Archive @ GSU, 2013. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/iph_theses/297.

Full text
Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. This results in recurrent episodes of coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. Although the causes of asthma are poorly understood, genetic and environmental factors have been implicated in the development and exacerbation of the disease. Among environmental risk factors, cigarette smoke is a well-known risk factor to trigger asthma symptoms. Exposure to secondhand smoke irritates the airways and may trigger an attack in adults with asthma. Smoke-free laws and regulations in the United States differ by state. The enforcement of smoke-free legislation has been related to asthma rates as it has been shown that they lead to a sustained drop in emergency hospital admission for asthma among adults. These laws and regulations are also necessary in reducing smoking rate and secondhand smoke exposure. Objective: The purpose of this thesis is to examine the association between tobacco smoke rates and asthma status among adults at the national and state levels and to evaluate the effects of state smoke-free laws and regulations on tobacco smoking rate among adults with asthma. Methods: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2009–2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data was used for the analyses. SAS-callable SUDAAN (version 10.0.0, RTI International, NC) was utilized to account for the complex sampling design of the BRFSS, and sample weights were used to produce estimates that were generalizable to the state and U.S. adult population. In addition to calculating descriptive statistics, chi-square tests and multivariate logistic regression were used to test for group differences and association between variables of interest. State level smoking rates were ranked to identify states that are in the lower and upper 20th percentiles and compare them with states’ smoke-free laws and regulation status. Results were considered significantly different if 95% confidence intervals (CIs) did not overlap or if statistical testing at p<0.05 was applicable. Results: Asthma prevalence rates are higher among adults that smoke cigarettes (10.5%, [aPR] =1.2) compared to non-smokers (7.8%, [aPR] =1.0). Of the 869,519 adult respondents in the survey, 8.5% reported having asthma. Nearly one-fifth (17.2%) of adults without asthma smoked cigarettes, while (21.7 %) of adults with asthma smoked. Females (10.5%) had higher asthma prevalence rates than males (6.4%). Black persons (10.0%), persons of American Indian (13.0%) descent had higher, and those of Hispanic (6.7%) descent had lower asthma rates than white persons (8.6%). Adults with a high school education or less (9.1%) had higher asthma rates than those with an education level that was equivalent to a 4 year college or more (7.3%) , and those with low income (<$15,000) had higher rates (13.3%) than those with high income (6.8%). Percentage of male (23.4%) and females (20.7%) with asthma who smoke are higher than those that do not smoke (19.3% and 15.1%, respectively). Asthma prevalence rates and smoking rates vary by geographic location. Smoking rates among adults with asthma was highest in the South (LA, AL, SC, TN, OK, MS, AR, WV, KY) and a couple of Midwest states (OH, IN,). Evaluating the association between the 2008 State of Tobacco Control Report and smoking rate among adults with asthma by state showed a statistically significant relationship between smoking rate among adults with asthma and smoke-free policy and regulation at the state and national level. On average, states with the lowest smoking rate among persons with asthma (smoking rates less than 20th percentile) had significantly higher smoke-free policy grades (mean grade [sd]=7.2 [1.99]) than states with a high smoking rate (smoking rate of 80th percentile or more) (mean grade [sd]=2.0 [2.00]) (p-value < 0.00001). Conclusion: Although most U.S. state smoke-free policies and regulations are relatively new, it is evident that these laws are effective in promoting cessation among adults and reducing nonsmokers’ exposure to secondhand smoke. The study found that smoke-free laws may improve health by lowering asthma prevalence and smoking rates among adult smokers. Also, these policies in turn protect non-smokers from the harmful health effects of secondhand smoke.

Abstract:
This study examines the role public libraries play in creating social capital within communities. Two sets of public libraries were selected based on their being geographically located in areas of high or low social capital. These libraries were then contacted by phone to determine whether they had wireless Internet or a café on the premises. Libraries which possessed these traits were totaled according to their level of social capital. The data was then compared to population and circulation information for the areas served by each library or library system. The results indicate that having a café and/or wireless Internet can significantly impact a community’s use of the library, though in some cases this relationship is weaker.

Abstract:
The synthesis, structure, and reactivity of some organometallic-fusedheterocycles were studied. This work was divided into three parts: first, thiapentalenyl tricarbonyl manganese complexes [Mn(CO)3{??5-SC7H3-1,3-(R)2}]were synthesized employing thiation on diacyl precursors; second, attempts toform the 5,5-fused ring pyrrole analogs to the thiapentalenyl complexes led to theformation of various amine and imine ligands and manganese complexes, but notthe desired ring-closed pyrroles; third, reductive amination on a ferrocenylmonoaldehyde substrate led to the formation of di(N-(ferrocenylmethyl))-Nmethylamineand its cyanoborane and cyanoborohydride analogs.Isolation of the desired thiapentalenyl manganese complexes wasaccomplished by first forming 1,2-diacylcyclopentadienes (fulvenes), convertingto the corresponding thallium salts [Tl{1,2-C5H3(COR)2}] employing thalliumethoxide, transmetallating with [Mn(CO)5Br], and ring closing using either P4S10or Lawesson's Reagent. Ring closure from the diacylmanganese complexes[Mn(CO)3{??5-1,2-C5H3(COR)2}] gave air stable thiapentalenyl complexes inmoderate to good yield and was tolerable to a variety of functional groups (aryl, arylacetyl, t-butyl). In the cases where 1,2-diarylacetyl complexes wereemployed, the isolated products were "quinoidal". While ring closure on thecorresponding diacylrhenium tricarbonyl complexes was not feasible, it wasobserved that these quinoidal thiapentalenyl structures could be formed on aruthenium Cp* moiety using the arylacetyl fulvenes.Various keto-amines or enol-imines could be formed from the 1,2-dibenzoyl fulvene employing primary amines (R = H, Me, OH, OMe). In thepresence of a reducing agent, neither reduction nor ring closure was observedfor any of the cases investigated. Formation of the corresponding manganesetricarbonyl complex for the methyoxyimine case was accomplished by reaction ofthe enol-methoxyimine with thallium ethoxide and then transmetallating with[Mn(CO)5Br]. Reaction of this keto-imine complex with various reducing agentsdid not lead to the desired 5,5-fused ring pyrrole complex but to reduction to thecorresponding alcohol.Diferrocenylmethyl methylamine complexes were obtained by reaction offerrocene monoaldehyde with ferrocenylmethyl methylamine in the presence of amild reducing agent (NaCNBH3). Isolation under anhydrous conditions gave theunexpected cyanoborohydride salt, di(N-(ferrocenylmethyl))-N-methylammoniumcyanoborohydride. Aqueous work-up gave the corresponding free amine.Conversion of the cyanoborohydride salt to the corresponding cyanoborane,di(N-(ferrocenylmethyl))-N-methylammonium–cyanoborane, was accomplishedby refluxing the cyanoborohydride salt in THF.

Abstract:
The literary works in this study: Frances E. W. Harper’s lola Leroy, Nella Larsens’ Quicksand, and Zora Neale Hurston’ s Their Eyes Were Watching God provide examples of female protagonists facing identity crises and reaching milestones in their lives as a result of theirjourneys towards self-actualization. The protagonists’ lives (childhood, adolescence, and adulthood/womanhood/motherhood) are traced during times of slavery, the antebellum period, the post-bellum period, and the Harlem Renaissance. Their experiences in each stage of life in relation to societal norms present the identity crisis present in each novel. In an attempt to define feminine identity as portrayed by the protagonists in the novels, I examined past ideals of femininity in American and African American history and literature. Additionally, a definition of femininity based upon the early works is contrasted with a definition of identity in the later works of African American female authors. Based upon the two perspectives of how the female characters discovered thei identities, the female characters of later novels prove to be direct descendents of early female characters in African American literature. As the study demonstrates, the characteristics of African American female protagonists’ of strength, resilience, confidence, and, eventually, independence are progressive in these novels which results in characters that develop positively over a period of more than seventy years. The study also suggests that the portrayal of femal protagonists in the novels of African-American women continues to be patterned after the early novelists and, at the same time, continues to progress in strength and development.

McCray, Sean. "Masculinity and the Postmodern in American Psycho and Fight Club." TopSCHOLAR®, 2006. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/297.

Full text
Abstract:
Initially, this paper traces masculinity in America from the nineteenth century and up through the mid twentieth century in order to define traditional masculinity and identify some of its characteristics. Traditional masculinity, typically demonstrated though aggressive and violent behavior, is currently undergoing cultural and social revisions due to various contemporary ideas. In analyzing American Psycho and Fight Club, two controversial novels written in the past twenty years, the paper makes clear that the protagonists acutely feel the tension that exists between historical perceptions of masculinity and current ideas of what men should be. They react to that tension by exhibiting behavior that is characterized as protest masculinity or ultramasculinity. The problems of waning masculinity, however, are symptomatic of the larger problems posed by a postmodern era as a result of high capitalism. Postmodernism is explored, as are its origins and contexts, through the work of Frederic Jameson and Francis Fukuyama, and its ideas are applied to the characters from both novels. Though Patrick Bateman, the protagonist in American Psycho, is unaware that he lives during the postmodern timeframe, he nevertheless manifests his anxiety to it primarily through acts of violence against women and other assertions of what he believes is traditional masculinity. The narrator of Fight Club and his alter ego Tyler Durden are more aware of the stultifying nature of rampant capitalism than Patrick Bateman; their reactions to corporate capitalism and postmodernism are manifested through violence and eventually efforts at revolution aimed at one of the financial centers of America. The nature of postmodernism as a stultifying and anti-individualistic perception becomes clear through an analysis of each protagonist's job and daily life. It is clear that the postmodern era is socially and psychically disturbing to men, as evidenced by the dual nature of each protagonist's personality and their apparent lack of unifying identities. Patrick Bateman and the narrator in Fight Club create, whether consciously or unconsciously, alter egos that allow them to exhibit their respective masculinities in a culture that no longer accepts such behavior. That both characters manifest extreme versions of masculinity is particularly important to note, and indicative of a primal need to be traditionally manly. Contemporary society attempts to repress the behavior that stems from that need, and even attempts to erase the need to be masculine as well. Neither character experiences any catharsis because of his actions. Patrick Bateman learns nothing about himself, nor does he feel any remorse for the murders he committed throughout the novel. Tyler Durden is dead at the end of Fight Club, and though the narrator lives on, he is confined in an insane asylum, which to him is perhaps preferable to the outside world.

Abstract:
This study was aimed at evaluating the health hazards of workers exposed to solvents during the re-furbishing of chemical rail-tankers. The process of re-furbishing comprises of three main and sub processes that requires the application of three different solvent products at various time intervals. Two of the three main processes were conducted within the tanker, defined as a confined space, and the third was conducted on the dome area, situated on the outside middle top area of tanker. The main chemical composition of the solvent products used included, xylene, toluene, trichloroethylene, methylene chloride, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and petroleum solvent. Various different combinations of chemical compositions, per solvent product, were found. During the assessment of the solvent exposures, as prescribed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Manual of Analytical Methods NOSH Manual of Analytical methods, results for both personal and environmental / area air samples were found to be in violation of the occupational exposure limit (OEL) for mixtures, as it has exceeded the unity of one (1). This result was further supported by the high urine content of biological markers, which are reflected in the biological exposure index, for the majority of solvents. The most frequent complaints experienced among the majority of exposed workers included, headaches, dizzy spells, a feeling of fatigue, drunkenness and eye irritation. A lesser percentage experienced nausea (feeling like vomiting), had a sense of irritability and breathing problems. Control measures, aimed at limiting exposures, were found to be inadequate or non-existent as some workers indicated that they were required to purchase their own personal protective equipment. No training or awareness in the safe use, handling, storage and associated health effects has been provided to workers exposed to solvents. The study highlights numerous limitations and concerns, which sets the platform for future studies within similar work environments.

Abstract:
The materials that exhibit martensite transformation have very important applications in engineering, and the microstructures of the materials play a key role foraffecting their mechanical behavior in macroscope. Therefore many attentions havebeen drawn for studying the related problems. This work focuses on the motion oftwin boundaries. Three questions are being asked: how is a twin boundary is nucleated in a homogenous (untwinned) material? After the twin boundary is nucleated, how is its motion initiated? How fast does it move? This study provides an atomisticunderstanding for these three questions. Linear stability analysis is firstly applied to capture the initiation of motion of atwin boundary. When a twin boundary is about to move, the lowest eigenvalue of thesystem Hessian drops to zero. And the corresponding eigenvector predicts accuratelythe way in which the twin boundary is going to move. The same idea is applied toinvestigate how motion of an irrational twin boundary is initiated. Atomic modelsof irrational twin boundaries are constructed by employment of continuum models, provided that the point group of rotations which relate two variants is extended toany rotations in plane. The zero eigenvectors reveal the complicated behavior ofmotion of irrational twin boundaries. The problem of nonuniqueness of kinetic relations proposed by Schwetlick andZimmer is solved in a thermoelasticity framework. By calculating the net heat fluxcrossing the phase boundary which is carried by the phonons, a unique kinetic relationcan be determined. Finally, a nonlocal criterion for nucleation of twin boundariesis proposed. By checking the stiffness of each unit cell evaluated with respect to asingle variable that represents the displacement along the unit cell diagonal direction, locations and the orientations of nucleated twin boundaries can be predicted.

Skelton, Tracey Lynn. "Women, men and power : gender relations in Montserrat." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/297.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis draws on and informs feminist theory and Caribbean studies and is concerned with investigating the particular form of gender relations in Montserrat. Gender relations are conceptualised as power relations between men and women. This argument is derived from an exploration of the possibilities and limitations of a range of feminist literature: marxist feminism, socialist feminism, women's studies, feminist geography, radical feminism and the studies of women and development. The gender relations in Montserrat are explored in four areas of social organisation: the household, the workplace, union patterns and heterosexual behaviour. They are seen as universal features of women's lives and, potentially, the main sites of gender relations. Montserratian gender relations were found to be patriarchal, but varied in strength within the four social areas. The household per se was not a site of patriarchal gender relations unless shared with a male partner. The workplace did not exhibit patriarchal gender relations. Gender relations in marriage and cohabiting unions were strongly patriarchal; those in visiting unions were either egalitarian or weakly patriarchal. Heterosexual behaviour, involving sexuality and biological reproduction, was identified as the main site of the maintenance and reproduction of patriarchal gender relations in Montserrat. Montserratian gender relations are shown to be broadly similar to those of the Caribbean generally; but there are exceptions. Very low levels of marriage and cohabitation mean that household gender relations are less patriarchal than in other islands. In comparison with other Caribbean islands, where MNCs, law wages, strict gender segregation and a lack of employment legislation prevail, Montserratian women experience higher wages, job security and greater employment opportunities. The Montserratian workplace, therefore, cannot be seen as a site of patriarchal gender relations. However, as is commonplace throughout the Caribbean, union patterns, specifically marriage and cohabitation, and heterosexual behaviour are sites of patriarchal gender relations.

Sabbah, Walid Wajeeh. "Developing A GIS And Hydrological Modeling Approach For Sustainable Water Resources Management In The West Bank -- Palestine." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2005. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/297.

Full text
Abstract:
This research deals with setting up a GIS and hydrological modeling based approach for sustainable water resources management in the West Bank of Palestine. This water sustainability approach took into consideration the water balance, the social, the economic, the demographic, the environmental, and the institutional components in order to enhance and promote the sustainable development in Palestine, both on the short and long runs. To evaluate the water balance component, a methodology was introduced to create the Water Sustainability Map (WSM). Since the groundwater is currently the only accessible water source by the Palestinians, the WSM is represented by the Aquifer Sustainable Yield (ASY) which is equivalent to the annual renewable recharge of the various aquifer formations in the West Bank. The ASY was determined by integrating the watershed boundaries derived from the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) with the available hydrological and meteorological data by using GIS. This GIS based approach was used to create the rainfall, evapo-transpiration, and runoff coverages by interpolating their values from the measured parameters. The total estimated ASY using this GIS approach was 679.7 MCM/Yr. which constituted the upper limit for the overall water use in all assumed future water demand scenarios. This approach fulfilled the demographic, social, and economic water sustainability components by proposing water demand scenarios for the period from 2005 to 2025 based on the gradual increase of population and their per capita water use, the available water infrastructure, and based on the value of water where priority was given to the household water use. This approach fulfilled the environmental dimension of water sustainability by studying the water quality and identifying the locations with high pollution indicators for various water use purposes and recommending ways to prevent the environmental degradation and groundwater pollution. This approach fulfilled the institutional dimension of water sustainability by reviewing the current institutions dealing with water management and distribution, recommending options to enhance their efficiency, and finally by proposing some options to save additional water in the West Bank.

Abstract:
As video games become more realistic, their applications are ever expanding. They can now show detail at an almost photorealistic level, and allow the player to make any number of decisions that can affect the outcome. Simulations are using this to create more and more realistic scenarios as training for high-risk professions. This creative project will research what is necessary for models that are to be used in educational or training simulations.

INTRODUCTION: Humans are formed by the union of systems. Because they are complex, these systems are dynamic and deterministic, with nonlinear behavior. The Heart Rate Variability (HRV) has been considered a good marker of homeostasis of the human organism. It is a noninvasive diagnostic method, often used in the assessment of autonomic control of the heart. Recent studies have shown that by HRV analysis, evaluating it in the time, frequency and Chaos, human bodies, in general, behave as complex nonlinear systems, predictable and ordered reactions, however apparently random OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the contribution of HRV as a predictor of morbidity after tooth extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 30 patients between 16 and 30 years, 15 male, underwent dental extraction of 3rd molar. Monitoring of HRV with time series of RR intervals in 1000, before proceeding with appliance POLAR S810, analyzing variables in the time (SDNN, RMSSD, SD1, SD2 and SD1/SD2), frequency (LF, HF was conducted LF / HF) and nonlinear (Hurst Exponent-HE-LE Lyapunov exponent, DFA and its components alpha1, alpha2 and alfa1/alfa2, using the "software" HRV analysis and DFA. RESULTS: According to a scale of points from the sum of morbid events after extraction (pain, swelling, inflammation, wound healing and psychic), defined a Study Group (12-19 points) and control (0 to 11 points). By analyzing the unpaired t test, considering P ≤ 0.05 value for two-tailed sample, among the studied variables: significant statistical value was found in the medium to Lyapunov exponent (0.999 and 0.885 for the study group and control value p = 0, 0014), SDNN (54.375 and 35.00 for the study and control p-value = 0.0007), RMSSD (46,375 to study and control 37.90 and p-value = 0.0008), SD1 (20,593 to study and 11.73 control and p-value = 0.0007), SD2 (45.468 for study and control 33.20 and p-value = 0.0057) and SD1/SD2 (2,093 and 1,555 for the study and control p-value = 0.0135), the values lower in the study group indicate reduced homeostasis and more linear behavior. The ROC curve analysis showed good sensitivity and specificity for LE, and full DFA ALFA1, with values for the area under the curve of 0.814, 0.656 and 0.662, respectively variables. CONCLUSION: The study of HRV in the time, frequency and nonlinear, for patients with dental extractions, can be used by professional dentists and probably in other areas of health, as a prognostic marker of postoperative clinical complications of Overall, apart from being a simple and easily reproducible.

Zerger, Heather M. "A comparative analysis of physical activity interventions for young children." Scholarly Commons, 2014. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/297.

Full text
Abstract:
Evidence suggests that physical inactivity is increasingly prevalent among young children. A common recommendation provided to parents suggests that they become actively involved in increasing their child's physical activity. However, this recommendation does not specify how a parent should become involved. Further, the evaluation of parental involvement in children's physical activity has yet to be conducted. The purpose of the current study was to conduct a functional analysis to identify a social, environmental variable that would engender a higher level of physical activity in young children. Once a social consequence was identified, reinforcement provided contingently on higher levels of physical activity and according to a fixed-time schedule was compared in an intervention analysis. The overall results of the study indicated that children were most active when receiving a form of social reinforcement contingent on higher levels of physical activity. These results suggest that parents of young children should become involved in increasing their child's physical activity by providing attention or physical engagement contingent on higher levels of physical activity.

Arvin, Rosanne. "Application of the Language Experience Approach for Secondary Level Students." UNF Digital Commons, 1987. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/297.

Abstract:
This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the language experience approach (LEA) for teaching reading and writing skills to functionally illiterate high school students who were identified as learning disabled. Twenty-one 9th-grade students ages fifteen to sixteen participated. The students were divided into a control group and an experimental group. The control group was instructed through the use of a commercial reading kit, Reader's Workshop I (1974). The experimental group received instruction using the LEA which uses student written material to generate reading skill activities. To verify effectiveness of the LEA, pre- and posttests of the Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test (1976), or SDRT, brown level, forms A and B and the Sentence Writing Strategy Pretest (1985), or SWSP, were administered to both the control and experimental groups. The results on the subtests of the SDRT indicated no significant gains or losses of reading skill ability for either group. The SWSP though, indicated a significant gain in sentence writing ability of 29 percentage points for the experimental group while the control group lost 11 percentage points. It is therefore evident that the language experience approach can be successful for teaching reading and writing skills to functionally illiterate high school students because it integrates reading and writing rather than providing detached skill instruction.

Sause, William. "A Coordinated Reinforcement Learning Framework for Multi-Agent Virtual Environments." NSUWorks, 2013. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/297.

Full text
Abstract:
The growing popularity of online virtual communities such as Second Life and ActiveWorlds demands the presence of intelligent agents to assist users in their daily online activities (e.g., exploring, shopping, and socializing). As these virtual environments become more crowded, multiple agents are needed to support the increasing number of users. Multi-agent environments, however, can suffer from the problem of resource competition among agents. It is therefore necessary that agents within multi-agent environments include a coordination mechanism to prevent unrealistic behaviors. Moreover, it is essential that these agents exhibit some form of intelligence, or the ability to learn, to support realism as well as to eliminate the need for developers to write separate scripts for each task the agents are required to perform. This research presents a coordinated reinforcement learning framework which can be used to develop task-oriented intelligent agents in multi-agent virtual environments. The framework contains a combination of a "next available agent" coordination model and a reinforcement learning model consisting of existing temporal difference reinforcement learning algorithms. Furthermore, the framework supports evaluations of reinforcement learning algorithms to determine which methods are best suited for task-oriented intelligent agents in dynamic, multi-agent virtual environments. To assess the effectiveness of the temporal difference reinforcement algorithms used in this study (Q-learning and Sarsa), experiments were conducted that measured an agent's ability to learn three tasks commonly performed by workers in a café environment. These tasks were basic sandwich making (BSM), complex sandwich making (CSM), and dynamic sandwich making (DSM). The BSM task consisted of four steps. The CSM and DSM tasks contained an additional fifth step. The agent learned the BSM and CSM tasks from scratch while the DSM task was learned after the agent became skillful in BSM. The measurements used to evaluate the efficiency of the Q-learning and Sarsa algorithms were the percentage of successful and optimally successful episodes performed by the agent and the average number of time steps taken by the agent to complete a successful episode. The experiments were run using both a fixed (FEP) and variable (VEP) ε-greedy probability rate. Results showed that the Sarsa reinforcement learning algorithm, on average, outperformed the Q-learning algorithm in almost all experiments except when measuring the percentage of successfully completed episodes using FEP for CSM and DSM, in which Sarsa performed almost equally as well as Q-learning. Overall, experiments utilizing VEP resulted in higher percentages of successes and optimal successes, and showed convergence to the optimal policy when measuring the average number of time steps per successful episode.

The current research has as its main axis the analysis of how the fight for the female domestic workers’ recognition, in the field of labor law, showcases the institutional racism of the Brazilian State through an incomplete inclusion. To do so, at first we discussed the historical development of domestic labor in the country, from the fundamentals of the Brazilian society, confluence of race, class and gender in its formation; and from the consolidated theoretical debate, aiming to notice its current state of social exclusion. Then, we focused on the constitution of the work relations in Brazil and the role that the State assumed towards the insertion of the country in the capitalist system and for the formation of free labor as a wide and concrete reality. The goal was to understand how the theme of citizenship comes up in the Brazilian society as well as its effects for the working class and, more precisely, for the female domestic workers. Thus, the theories of recognition, from Charles Taylor, Axel Honneth and Nancy Fraser emerge as a consistent theoretical framework to understand, on the one hand, how the historical iniquities that strike the dynamics of domestic labor relations are structured. On the other hand, they help us understand how to face their dilemmas for the symbolic and material deconstruction of such reality. Those theories articulate socioeconomic iniquities and cultural values that reproduce and legitimize the recognition that is denied for the female domestic workers – which is the reason why the debate about institutional racism is necessary. Lastly, we connected the changes in the sociojuridical insertion of the female domestic workers with their agenda of union representation, aiming to show how such agenda moves through the binomial redistribution-recognition. The incomplete inclusion of those workers is a construction whose regulatory framework lies in the Brazilian State.

Abstract:
The government action has influenced social and environmental issues directly. The regulation of fishing activities, aquaculture and fish farming in the State of Tocantins, published in 1997 (Complementary Law No. 13) included professional fishing as predatory activity, disregarding the local practice and contrary to current federal law. This action initiated a series of conflicts and acted as barriers to the practice of fishing activity in the region. Therefore, in this article, we analyze the aspects of the exercise of professional fishing in the State of Tocantins from the analysis of a number of federal and state laws and recorded interviews with representatives of this sector in the state, aiming to report the fishing invisibility process, fishermen and their struggle to reverse this process. We conclude that the rules built in a participatory manner and articulated between the different levels of management should help to reduce conflicts and the conservation of the natural resource.
