Abstract:
Gaze estimation systems determine where someone is looking. Gaze is used for a wide range of applications including market research, usability studies, and gaze-based interfaces. Traditional equipment uses special hardware. To bring gaze estimation mainstream, researchers are exploring approaches that use commodity hardware alone. My work addresses two outstanding problems in this field: 1) it is hard to collect good ground truth eye images for machine learning, and 2) gaze estimation systems do not generalize well -- once they are trained with images from one scenario, they do not work in ano

Electrical Engineering
M.S.E.E.
Eyes allow us to see and gather information about the environment. Eyes mainly act as an input organ as they collect light, but they also can be considered an output organ as they indicate the subject's gaze direction. Using the orientation of the head and the position of the eyes, it is possible to estimate the gaze path of an individual. Gaze estimation is a fast growing technology that track a person's eyes and head movements to "pin point" where the subject is looking at on a computer screen. The gaze direction is described as a person's line of sight.

Patients with macular degeneration (MD) often fixate with a preferred retinal locus (PRL). Eye movements made while fixating with the PRL (in MD patients) has been observed to be maladaptive compared to those made while fixating with the fovea (normal sighted individuals). For example, in MD patients, PRL eye movements negatively affect fixation stability and re-fixation precision; consequently creating difficulty in reading and limits to their execution of other everyday activities. Abnormal eye movements from the PRL affect research on the physiological adaptations to MD. Specifically, prev

A link between eye movement mechanics and the mental processing associated with text reading has been established in the past. The pausing of an eye gaze on a specific word within a sentence reflects correctness or fluency of a translated text. A cognitive translation system has been built employing a single, inexpensive web camera without the use of infrared illumination. It was shown that the system translates the text, detects rarely occurring and out-of-context words from eye gaze information, and provides solutions in real time while the user is still reading. During face-to-face meetings, humans use multimodal information, including verbal information, visual information, body language, facial expressions, and other non-verbal gestures. In contrast, during computer-mediated-communication (CMC), humans rely either on mono-modal information such as text-only, voice-only, or video-only or on bi-modal information by using audiovisual modalities such as video teleconferencing. Psychologically, the difference between the two lies in the level of the subjective experience of presence, where people perceive a reduced feeling of presence in the case of CMC.

In order to create a comfortable environment, users’ heads are allowed to move freely. In our approach, the eye region is assumed within the view of the camera. As we know, the mapping between the gaze points and the eye region is difficultly to be formulated as a polynomial. The zoomed and clear eye images were grabbed to increase the accuracy of g

Appearance-based gaze estimation systems, on the other hand, do not require any dedicated hardware and relies on RGB camera image, hence can be deployed at a larger scale. The first algorithm for the binocular estimation of angle kappa (BEAK) is based on the assumption that at each time instant both eyes look at the same point on a surface with a known geometry (e.g., a computer monitor).
