A recent study of the language question in Mozambique criticises the fact that not enough practical attention is being given by the ruling party to the promotion of the Indigenous languages in spite of the rhetorical commitment to this. This research-study intends to argue for the need to empower Mozambican (and other Southern African) indigenous languages for more extended functions in national life. It is hoped that it will make a contribution to the understanding of the sociopsychological, sociolinguistic, and sociopolitical dimensions of language attitudes in the Mozambican language context. Therefore, the first Chapter will analyse the socio-historical foundations necessary for an understanding of current language attitudes in Mozambique. It is important to emphasise, at this point, that a more general sociological approach or an approach considering language attitudes will be adopted in preference to an approach with political analysis (such as Phillipson, R.). Considering that the Chapter presents a brief definition of the subject, a review of the literature and suggestions of areas for future research, I propose to divide it in two ; Part I and Part II. The second will attempt to provide a concise account of the present language situation in Mozambique. In the third Chapter, an investigation of language attitudes research in Mozambique will be carried out, together with pointers as to how such research may contribute to language policy-making, language-planning and action. Then, the study will outline the methodologies to be used in language attitudes research and suggest how future research should proceed. It will show the major findings of the research and discuss important areas for future studies. Finally, the Chapter will explore the attitudinal dimensions of language speaker numbers and power variables. Chapter four will discuss different aspects of the difficult issue of language use in education in Mozambique, in particular, and Southern Africa, in general. Chapter five will stress the need to promote the indigenous languages of Mozambique, in particular, and Southern Africa in general. Chapter six will consider the context of language planning in Mozambique and Southern Africa. The Chapter then will explore some traits of a forward-looking language planning policy for multilingual contexts. The concluding Chapter, will highlight the implications of the entire study for multilingual situations, discuss the implications of the findings for the question of language planning and language teaching in Mozambique, and make recommendations that those in this field may find useful.

The thesis examines three case studies of the Greek feminist and ecological movements during the period: 1975-1992. As the most appropriate theoretical framework for the analysis of those case studies, 'new social movement theory' is selected. However, the Greek case studies represent significant variations in regard to the 'ideal type' of new social movements as depicted in the literature. These differences originate to a certain degree from Greek new social movements' different cultural and political environment. The Greek social movements had to face a strong statocratic and partocratic society, where there was lack of an autonomous social movement sector. This led to the formation of semi-autonomous, party-affiliated social movement organisations. Moreover, the Greek political culture has been rooted on two different geopolitical visions. The one has pointed to a more traditionally oriented, inward looking political orientation hostile to Western values and the institutional arrangements of modernity. The other has been a modernising, outward looking orientation, adopting Western institutions and values. The stand of the Greek new social movements towards this open question of modernisation has been variable. Some social movement organisations have underlined the need for empowering national autonomy and have, therefore, been positively predisposed towards the state and the political parties as a significant means for achieving this goal. Others have eschewed the question altogether, focusing only on the local and international level with significant, however, political cost. Another factor, which has influenced the identity of the Greek new social movements, has been the tradition of the Left, which has favoured grand-narratives based on humanism and posing a dichotomy between 'general' and 'particular' struggles. Summing up, the social movements presented show marked variations in comparison with the ideal-typical type. They were strongly influenced by: statocracy and patrocracy, the open question of modernisation, and the political culture of the Left.

This thesis describes research into the use of external design expertise by client bodies from a group of developing countries known as Newly Industrialised Countries (NICs). It explores the reasons for using design consultancy companies by NIC clients with particular reference to the operations of British automotive design consultancies. The study was carried outin two stages. The first stage was of an exploratory nature and consisted of a postal survey of 56 British design consultancy companies specialised in product design, and interviews of seven consultants which were chosen from the respondents of the postal survey. As vehicle design and development projects were found to represent a major part of the consultancies' work in NICs, the second stage of the study focused on the automotive industry. Case studies were carried out in four British design consultancies selected from the combined findings of the initial study and a focused literature survey on the automotive industry. The case studies focused on selected vehicle design and development projects as a device to find out about the contribution of design consultancies in the development of firm-level capabilities. The study has identified the use of design consultancy companies as one of the formal technology acquisition mechanisms for NIC clients. Design consultancies provide an alternative mechanism to other technology transfer mechanisms for companies wanting to establish indigenous product design and development capabilities. In addition, an NIC company producing as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), can receive help in creating its independent product development capacity from design consultancies. Finally, for aspiring NIC companies which aim at entering into the world markets with own brand vehicles, independent consultancies can provide a short-cut in putting together a product of the right quality. A typology of NIC clients is developed. According to this typology, NIC clients suffer from a number of scarcities to varying degrees; for these clients, the reasons why they use design consultancy companies are identified. While some of the reasons appear to be NIC and automotive industry specific, others are applicable to organisations from developed countries and NICs alike representing the general reasoning behind making use of design consultancies. Exporting to the advanced markets was found to be the dominant stimulating factor of design consultancy use by NIC producers in the context of the automotive industry. The study has revealed that design consultancies have a role as agents of learning for NIC clients. The consultancy role changes from 'provider of technology as a package' to 'problem fixer', as the client NIC companies progress in the process of acquiring indigenous capabilities. The findings of the study have also revealed that design consultancies play various roles as marketing agents for exporting NIC companies. These roles are determined by the level of development of client capabilities in terms of export. For example, at an advanced level, design consultancies can be effective in overcoming barriers caused by the lack of positive brand name and country image. In the light of the major findings of the study, a five stage conceptual model is built in the context of the automotive industry. This model identifies patterns of design consultancy use which vary according to the different stages in the development of firm-level capabilities in technology, marketing and design.

Saudi Arabia undertook measures to liberalize its economy in order to be a part of the WTO, which were carried out in a gradual manner long before the country was accepted as a member of the organization. The reform measures are still being implemented and the economy opening up to foreign investors. The WTO accession has enhanced the optimism of the investors towards the benefits that are expected to be achieved from this membership. The stock market has already responded to these changes through a positive signal and a higher level of foreign direct investment (FDI) is expected in the coming years. This flow of investment will provide an opportunity for diversification of the oil rich economy of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has been gradually growing into a centre for production of petrochemicals in the world. Owing to the competitive and none fluctuating price of natural gas, investments in olefins and derivatives have increased, which also bring high returns. The aim of this research, hence, is to analyse the impact of Saudi Arabia’s accession to the WTO on the petrochemical industry, and to analyse whether the competitiveness of the industry is sustainable under these new circumstances. In doing so, this study also analysis the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the industry with the objective of identifying the competitive advantage of Saudi Arabian petrochemical industry by utilizing Porter’s model. The study also provides a discussion on the possible steps that the government might take towards establishing an economy conducive to foreign investment, competition for the growth of the petrochemicals industry. In responding to the aims and objectives of the study, both the qualitative and quantitative approaches were used. The qualitative analysis includes an analysis of expert opinions collected through elite interviews using semi-structured questionnaires. All these are structured to obtain the opinions of 20 participants regarding the trends and developments of the petrochemical industry and the related policies undertaken by the government. The quantitative analysis includes collecting secondary data for exports and imports of products of the industry along with relevant secondary data analysis of some of the leading petrochemical companies. The results of the analyses at various levels demonstrate that the petrochemicals industry has the potential to contribute to the gross output, diversification of the economy and the sources of earnings, and hence reducing the dependency on oil as the only source of income. In addition, the analysis shows that the industry has potential for the creation of jobs, new openings for investments in businesses, opening up the domestic markets towards certain new products and at the same time bringing down the reliance on imports. Furthermore, the qualitative analysis shows that government has already taken steps towards promotion and encouragement of FDI inflow in the industry but several other measures related to infrastructure and security factors need to be adopted. The nation already enjoys competitive advantages and benefits of location advantages apart from the cost advantage in oil extraction and petrochemicals production. Accession of Saudi Arabia to the WTO as a member country has opened the economy to the outside competition and the petrochemical industry was supposed to be getting the gains from trade and open economy. The global investors have demonstrated their optimism about investment in Saudi Arabia. The existing opportunities in the petrochemical sector will receive a boost apart from diversification of the oil-based economy. The country is gradually becoming a booming centre of petrochemical industry and the growth is exponential. Technological barriers are gradually broken and the industry is moving towards sustainable development. Owing to the competitive pricing of the natural gas sector and cheap availability of feedstock have made it a lucrative place for investment in petrochemical production. However, it will take some more years to realize the full benefit of the accession to the WTO as complementary sectors are also being developed. The membership has however opened the strengths as well as the weaknesses of Saudi’s petrochemical industry to the entire world. Thus, the membership brings on greater transparency, enabling easier and faster assessment and remedies.

How do policymakers make decisions during financial market uncertainty? I develop a straightforward framework of policymaking in uncertainty. To overcome uncertainty, policymakers gather information using strategies discussed across a variety of political science disciplines. Policymakers need information to be able to make goal-oriented decisions. The information strategies actors choose are conditioned on the uncertainty problems they face. In turn, the information they receive impacts their policy decisions. My three empirical papers investigate what strategies are likely to be chosen in different types of uncertainty and how these choices affect policy decisions. My first paper, co-written with Mícheál O’Keeffe, develops a signaling game that policymakers play when they perceive data uncertainty, i.e. uncertainty about economic fundamentals. The model is supported empirically with analytic narratives of recent crises in Korea and Ireland. My following two papers deal with situations of increasing causal uncertainty, i.e. uncertainty about how actions cause outcomes. In both of these papers I use Multi-state Event History Analysis. I find that when there is high causal uncertainty policymakers tend to use learning strategies that start with international-level policy recommendations. These recommendations are then updated with the experiences of regional peers who have adopted them. Beyond creating and finding evidence for a parsimonious framework of decisionmaking in uncertainty, I make a number of other contributions to political economy. I extend the empirical tools researchers can use to understand decisions in complex choice environments. I provide evidence that making financial bureaucrats “independent" does not ensure positive outcomes. Specifically, it does not guarantee that financial bureaucrats will provide accurate information needed for effective policymaking.

This work examines the application of X-ray computed tomography (XCT) in meteoritics. This powerful technique uses the attenuation of X-rays passing through a sample to map it in three dimensions, allowing for the imaging and quantification of phases and features without the need for destructive sampling. XCT is a novel method with its applications to planetary science only recently recognised and not extensively explored. As such, this study presents two examples of using XCT to both elucidate its potential, and better understand the constituents of chondritic meteorites and the processes experienced on their parent bodies. To test the reliability of XCT, the data are conjoined with standard analytical techniques. Firstly, the 3D fabric and textural properties of 17 L chondrites of varying petrological type and shock stage are described. Specifically, porosity is imaged, quantified and compared with pycnometry data. For each chondrite, the size distribution and orientations of metal grains are reconstructed and correlated with the degree and direction of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility in the sample. Both porosity and metal grain fabrics reveal trends with progressive thermal and shock metamorphism. The mechanisms accounting for such correlation are explored. Secondly, XCT is used to survey fragments of the Barwell L6 meteorite to identify and locate igneous inclusions. From this data, several inclusions were then subsampled and further geochemically investigated, including oxygen isotopic compositions, hafnium-tungsten systematics, and trace element analysis. Studied inclusions are found to be similar in composition and age to chondrules, but depleted in metal. A possible formation scenario is proposed and the potential link to chondrule formation is discussed. Using these examples, the factors influencing the accuracy of XCT data acquisition and processing are described. The benefits and limitations of the technique, with respect to the analysis of extraterrestrial material and implications for future use, are also considered.

George Frampton (1860-1928) was arguably one of the most important sculptors of the movement that became known as 'The New Sculpture' in Britain from the 1880s to around 1920. Frampton's generation became known for its employment of detailed surface modelling, attention to anatomical detail and a predominance of bronze as a medium through which to express these matters. Frampton finished his schooling at the Royal Academy, after winning the Gold Medal and Travelling Studentship (which took him to Paris), in 1899. He went on to regularly exhibit at the RA and was elected an Associate in 1894 and full RA in 1902. His range of work was widespread in the fields of architectural decoration (internal and external), jewellery and silversmithery, commemorative medals, portraiture, all types of commemorative monumental sculpture, and ideal work. By 1908 when he received his knighthood, Frampton was a respected, efficient and dextrous maker of commissioned work and numerous prestigious schemes were afforded him. This range of work will be examined in depth and my research has uncovered many new works in these genres. It is the purpose of this thesis to resurrect Frampton's name ftom. the neglect it has suffered in art historical writings since the sculptor's death some 69 years ago.

An important model in the study of electron-atom collisions was development by Temkin and Poet. Although the model has been used to test many theories and approximation methods, the novel method of solution used by Poet has not been developed further to any great extent. The Temkin-Poet model of electron scattering simplifies the three-body scattering problem by suppressing all angular dependence of the wavefunction.
In this thesis we return to Poet's method and apply it to a range of calculations for the hydrogen-isoelectronic series. Firstly it is demonstrated that the method provides high-precision solutions for elastic and inelastic scattering. these solutions will then be used to investigate various aspects of electron scattering including the ionisation of hydrogen in the near-threshold region, resonant states in helium, and the scaling of elastic cross sections for a number of hydrogen-like ions.

We present new 6 cm observations of the binary radio, X-ray and ɿ -ray star GT0236+610 (LSI+61°303) obtained in August 1984 and September 1986. Ve calculate an improved period for the source's periodic radio outbursts of 26.50 ± 0.03 days. No significant period derivative was found. Based on an analysis of 201 flux density measurements from 1977 August to 1986 September, we find evidence for a possible 4 year modulation of the amplitude of the 26.50 day periodic radio outbursts. This thesis assesses the potential of actor-network theory (ANT) for conceptualising social enterprise by applying the concepts of assemblage and translation to the production of social values through three fieldsites studied in Ghana. Social enterprises are companies that use market-based revenues to generate social value while maintaining financial viability. Social entrepreneurship involves using and combining resources, expertise and networks in an innovative way to achieve social value. Finally, social value makes it possible to explore well-being and common good in ways that cannot be reduced merely to individual needs and wants or to monetary quantities. The present study examines social enterprises and social entrepreneurship through three case-studies and draws lessons from nine months of fieldwork in Ghana in 2004-2005. Using actor-network theory allows us to trace and follow the three social enterprises and social entrepreneurs beyond the conventional understanding of an enterprise or an economy. Measuring and evaluating the qualities of interactions aimed at enhancing social value, social enterprises create new identified objects and realities by involving the stakeholders, users and customers in the process, not just experts, economists and accountants. These pluralistic socio-technical objects are considered in this study as assemblages. The production of social values is studied through the notion of ‘translation’ where values are gradually articulated through different stages. These propositions are studied by way of a ‘test’ in all three cases, in which various assemblages are identified according to three themes. The first theme discusses information assemblages, which is seen as a source of problematisations; the second relates to spatial assemblages and how they facilitate new associations to emerge; the third theme is credit and money; and how actors use them to enrol new resources. Finally, these resources are evaluated using either internal or external measuring tools developed for the social enterprise sector. Social values emerge through the cyclical process.

La Cappadoce au IVème siècle est célèbre par ses Pères de l'Eglise, Basile de Césarée, Grégoire de Nysse. Depuis le 17e siècle, les érudits se sont attachés, à étudier la pensée de ces auteurs et à mieux les situer dans leur temps et d'abord à établir la chronologie de leurs écrits. C'est une tâche difficile et inachevée, come le prouvent les divergences, encore aujourd'hui, entre historiens. De plus, la plupart des travaux parus jusqu'ici ont porté sur un seul auteur à la fois. Le présent travail se propose d'inverser les perspectives en se centrant sur une région, dans le droit fil des livres déjà parus ou à paraître sur la prosopographie de l'Afrique, de l'Italie et de la Gaule, et en croisant les différentes sources (conciliaires, épigraphiques et littéraires - les plus nombreuses), de recenser les personnages laïcs et ecclésiastiques ayant vécu dans cette région d'Anatolie romaine entre 303 et 558.

Das im folgenden vorgestellte Projekt Stabilitäts- und Flexibilitätsorientierungen in ostdeutschen Lebensverläufen wurde am Institut für Soziologie der Universität Leipzig im Rahmen eines Lehrpraktikums durchgeführt. In dem Projekt wurden berufliche Stabilitäts- und Flexibilitätsorientierungen ostdeutscher Beschäftigter vor dem Hintergrund individueller Ressourcen und Gelegenheitsstrukturen untersucht. Anhand von 68 biographischen Interviews älterer und jüngerer Kohorten sollte gezeigt werden, in welchem Maße individuelle Merkmale sowie familiäre, arbeitsmarktliche, sozialpolitische und betriebliche Gelegenheitsstrukturen die individuellen Handlungsorientierungen beeinflussen. Vor dem Hintergrund der \"Entstandardisierung\" von Lebenslaufmustern und der \"Flexibilisierung\" von Erwerbsverläufen wurde dabei nach den Ursachen und Veränderungen kohortenspezifischer Unterscheidungen berufsbiographischer Entwürfe gefragt.

Male and female alligators ranging from 58 cm to 361 cm in length (N=1054) were captured and their blood was sampled between 9 A.M. and midnight from June 2000 - June 2002 at the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge in Grand Chenier, LA. Animals were captured in a variety of habitats including marsh, open water, canals, and ponds. Total thyroid hormones were measured by radioimmunoassay. Four criteria were used to evaluate changes in hormone levels: sex, total length, season, and time of day. Thyroxine (T4) varied over a wide range from 0.5 to 57 ng/mL. Triiodothyronine (T3) levels were below the sensitivity of the assay (<0.6ng/mL). A distinct seasonal peak in T4 was observed between December and April, peaking in March with highest mean T4 levels observed in the spring. Mean T4 declined significantly from the spring to an intermediate summer mean and declined significantly again in the winter. No T4 differences between the sexes were observed. Mean T4 was highest in juveniles, significantly lower in subadults, and significantly lower still in adults. Highest levels were found between 5 P. M. and midnight. With values up to 57 ng/ml in the spring, alligators exhibit T4 levels among the highest recorded for reptiles.

Protein tyrosine phosphorylation regulates many aspects of cell growth and differentiation. Since cellular tyrosine phosphorylation levels are controlled by the antagonizing actions of the protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) and the protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs), these enzymes play a direct role in regulating processes as diverse as oncogenesis and neuronal development. In particular, the transmembrane group of PTPs, known as the receptor-type protein tyrosine phosphatases (RPTPs), has been linked to regulation of axon growth and guidance during development and regeneration. The regulation of activity of these RPTPs is of clear importance, yet the fundamental mechanisms underlying this regulation are poorly understood. While extracellular ligands are well known to dimerize and activate the receptor protein tyrosine kinases, the extent to which RPTP regulation parallels this scenario is largely unknown. We have examined the dimerization state and the relationship this state has with the phosphatase activity of the neuronal RPTP, PTPRO. We have found that PTPRO, a Type III RPTP, can exist in a dimerized state, likely regulated by disulfide linkages in the intracellular domain. Ligand addition to a chimeric PTPRO increases dimerization of the transmembrane and intracellular domains. Ligand addition to the chimeric PTPRO also decreases its phosphatase activity towards artificial peptides and a putative substrate, TrkC, a protein also known to be important in neuronal development. PTPRO's regulation of TrkC may be physiologically relevant as the proteins can be co-precipitated from transfected cells and PTPRO's dephosphorylation of TrkC is efficient compared to that of other RPTPs. The decrease in PTPRO's activity upon ligand-induced dimerization was unexpected as dimerization of a structurally-similar RPTP family member suggested the opposite functional outcome. This work suggests a complex relationship between dimerization and activity for the Type III RPTPs, which include PTPRO. The results presented in this dissertation will extend the current knowledge on RPTP functions and the cellular processes they regulate.

CD20 is a 35kDa surface antigen expressed on B cells from the early pre-B stage through the mature B stage. Moreover, the CD20 antigen is found on a majority of B cell malignancies. Rituximab is a chimeric anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody which has been extensively used alone or in combination in the treatment of CD20+ B cell malignancies including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas (NHL) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), as well as in the treatment of numerous autoimmune disorders. Despite its emerging use in the clinic, 30% to 50% of patients with low-grade NHL exhibit no clinical response to Rituximab. Previous work to elucidate the mechanisms of Rituximab resistance has established that antibody dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) is important as a predominant mechanism of lymphoma cell clearance and that Fcγ receptors (FcγRs) are critical for the in vivo actions of Rituximab in NHL. Natural killer group 2D, NKG2D is a major activating receptor on T lymphocytes and natural killer cells. The NKG2D–ligand (NKG2D-L) interaction triggers an activating signal which results in cytotoxic lysis of the cell expressing the ligand. One potential ligand for murine NKG2D is the retinoic acid early 1β (Rae-1β) protein which is expressed during cellular stress and has a high affinity for the NKG2D receptor in mice. We have recently shown that an anti-HER2-IgG3 fused to murine NKG2D Ligand, Rae1β inhibited HER2+ tumor growth significantly more than Herceptin alone. Similarly, our objective is to enhance the performance of anti-CD20 directed therapy through activation of NK cells by an anti-CD20 antibody encoding the same NK activation ligand. Previous results with anti-HER2-IgG3-Raelβ led us to hypothesize that a CD20 specific fusion protein will bind to CD20 expressing tumor cells and deliver an activation signal to local NKG2D receptors on effector cells triggering a non-FcγR dependent anti-tumor response. Here we show that anti-CD20-NKG2D-L can be synthesized and tested for its ability to bind human CD20 and activate NK cells through the NKG2D receptor in vitro.

To understand attitudes about voting in Kenya, this study examines Kenyan voters’ feelings of freedom to vote according to their own will and without pressure. More specifically it seeks to determine the extent to which these feelings are affected by 1) perception of corruption, 2) levels of trust in the government, 3) fear of political violence and intimidation, and 4) ethnic identity. Rational choice theory and an insideroutsider perspective are applied to examine the issue from a theoretical framework. Previous research conducted in relation to voting behavior and perception of corruption, trust in government, and ethnicity, among other things, are considered. This study uses secondary data collected by the Afrobarometer in 2008, and bivaraite and multivariatea nalysis are employed.
Logistic regression models are used to examine the extent to which certain variables explain feelings of freedom to vote according to personal preference. The results from the logistic regression analyses show that both trust in government and fear of being subject to political violence and intimidation affect Kenyan voters’ feelings of freedom to vote according to their personal preference. These results support two hypotheses. First, Kenyan voters will feel freer to vote according to their own preference as their levels of trust in the government increase. Second, Kenyan voters’ feelings of freedom to vote will be negatively associated with fear of being subject to political violence and intimidation.

Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) deposit eggs on 1250 km of Florida beaches in underground egg chambers. Florida beaches host more than 20,000 loggerhead sea turtles per year, which comprise 90% of the total nesting population of the United States. Coastal erosion has caused depletion of much of the suitable nesting habitat. Beaches in Florida also support various developments, homes, recreational activities, and serves other environmental networks. This erosion can be attributed to coastal development, global warming and the rise in sea level. Due to economic, recreational, safety, and environmental conservation reasons one mechanism, beach preservation has become necessary. Beach renourishment, adding sand to the beach via dredging,accoplishes this. The source of sand, the time of renourishment, and the biological, chemical and geological parameters of the sand must all be considered to minimize ecological disturbances.
The impact of three beach renourishment projects were examined that occurred in Broward County, John U. Lloyd State Park (1989), Hollywood Beach (1990), and Hillsboro Beach (1998). Nesting success, incubation time, and hatching success were analyzed via one-way ANOVA and slope tests. Nest depth and emergence success were analyzed when the data were available. Pre-nourishment data were used to analyze the nesting conditions prior to erosion. The post-nourishment data were compared to test the impacts of renourishment on nesting and hatching parameters.
On all three beaches, the highest nesting success was found before the renourishment. The success dropped the year of the renourishment. The number of adult female emergences did increase the year follwing the renourishment, due to the increased beach width. Incubation times are decreased during the year following the renourishment. However, this data as well as the nest depth data on all three beaches strongly related to the weather data. The hatching success data could not be conclusively linked with the renourishment. The Hillsboro Beach project only indicated a decrease in the hatching success the year after the renourishment. The emergence success was slightly lower the year following renourishment, however not significantly so.
While beach renourishment did affect some aspects loggerhead sea turtles' nesting parameters, the effects were minimal and did not appear to be long term. In most cases, the data had returned to pre-nourishment levels within three years after the renourishment. As renourishment has become beneficial in order to restore nesting habitat, it is important to study ways to protect the sand that is placed on the beaches. According to the three projects in Broward County, Florida, beach renourishment does appear to be a viable solution for the erosion problem. Since this is only a short term solution to a reoccuring problem, designing a complete beach maintainence plan could ensure the continuation of the beaches.

Technological advancement should be embraced and used to benefit people and stimulate economies, and that is further challenge in its own right. In Chapter 8 of the White Paper on Transformation of the Public Service dated 15 November 1995 (hereinafter, the White Paper), it is said that: “The Government of National Unity has embarked upon a concerted and comprehensive programme of administrative restructuring and rationalisation (my emphasis) with the object of: (a) Creating a unified and integrated service. (b) Creating a leaner and more cost-effective service.” Various strategies are listed in the White Paper, and the fundamental approach advocated is to right size, adjust remuneration structures, retrench and contract – out services.

Education policies remain a contested terrain in both the social and political environments. They are not neutral instruments and are used both to maintain the existing social order and also to promote varying kinds of change or mobility. The South African Schools Act, 1996 (Act 84 of 1996) hereafter SASA, which is the source of all policies that regulate school issues in South Africa promotes democratic methods of school governing and education provisioning that favours the previously disadvantaged groups. The NNSSF is one of the policies of SASA that makes schooling accessible to the poor through school fee exemptions while attempting to close the gap between the rich and the poor through differentiated school funding created according to researched poverty levels and standardized target lists. This has been designed to fulfil one of the essential human rights of man- education that has been entrenched in the Bill of Rights of the Republic of South Africa Constitution, 1996 (Act 108 of 1996) hereafter, Constitution. Thus, the study’s objective is to evaluate the implementation of the NNSSF policy in public schools focussing on school fee exemptions. The extent to which poor parents and learners are given school fee exemptions as they are supposed to according to the policy will be indicators of whether the NNSSF is justly or unjustly implemented in public schools. Learners are the recipients of the right to education. Parents are given the responsibility to fund the education of their children. However, for poor parents to fulfil that they need advice and assistance from the teachers and SGBs to be able to access the school fee exemptions while they have a right to just administrative action and to human dignity in dealing with them. SGBs and teachers have to create a favourable environment for the just implementation of the NNSSF by advising and xiii assisting deserving parents and learners to access school fee exemptions so that the right to education is fulfilled. The duty of in loco parentis and acting in the best interest of the child enforce teachers to do everything possible to ensure that learners access education. EDOs are supposed to guide, monitor and supervise the implementation of the policy while legal bodies should assist parents and learners to demand their right when it is violated through litigation. The study used the method of survey which is quantitative and interviews which are qualitative. Questionnaires and interview schedules were tools used to collect data that was analysed through statistical methods and represented in the form of tables and pie-charts. Various significant findings were made that had a bearing on the implementation of the NNSSF policy in public schools, most important to note is that some learners who have the right to education are aware of this right but do not know how to ensure that it is not violated. Parents are not given the opportunity to decide whether school fees should be charged in their schools. Above that they are not given the advice they need to be able to access school fee exemptions. Some teachers think that by advising and assisting learners and parents they will be buying cheap popularity- showing ignorance. EDOs do not know how schools implement the NNSSF, they are not involved in anyway. Thus the study views the implementation of NNSSF policy in public schools as unjust and recommends that SGBs and teachers need to be educated, guided and monitored by the EDOs on the policy and its implementation. They in turn will have to educate parents and learners so that they are able to access school fee exemptions thereby receiving education – their right.

Dolphins are increasingly coming into contact with humans, particularly where tourism is involved. It has been assumed that such contact causes chronic stress on dolphin populations. This study examined relatively naive populations of Hector's dolphins and their interaction with various watercrafts. Dolphins in New Zealand have been observed using theodolites and boat-based observations over the last two decades, particularly on the east side of the South Island at Akaroa, which is situated on the coast line of Banks Peninsula. This research was undertaken using shore-based theodolite tracking to observe boat activity around the coast of Lyttelton and Timaru and their associated Harbours. Observations were made mostly over two periods each of six months duration and included the months October through to March during the years 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. Observations made during a third period in 2005 were also incorporated for some of the analyses. Field investigations using a theodolite included more than 376 hours/site/season and recorded dolphin behaviour both with and without the presence of tour boats. Of primary interest were the tours, which ran regular trips to observe Cephalorhynchus hectori in their natural habitat. Hector's dolphins at both Lyttelton and Timaru were consistently observed with particular boat types and not with other types of water craft. Dolphins at Timaru exhibited a greater range of behaviours than those at Lyttelton. Stress-related behaviours such as an increase in swimming speed to open ocean and grouping behaviour were only observed in the presence of boats. Other potential stress behaviours, such as head slaps and repeated tail slaps, were only performed in the absence of boats. Observations implied that some generic dolphin behaviours, which often indicate stressed individuals may not apply to Hector's dolphins, and therefore question the assumption that all dolphin species behave in similar ways. We suggest that low-level tourist boat activity is not placing undue stress on the population. In addition to theodolite observations, tour boat based observations of Hector's dolphin were undertaken and behaviour at each site recorded for a focal animal. Tour boat-based observations concentrated on determining any preference to bow, stern, portside and starboard sides of the vessel. Dolphins consistently showed a preference in direction of approach and departure from tour vessels with a strong tendancy to the bow of the boat, and least with the stern. These results were similar irrespective of site or vessel. Behaviour data were also collected from tour boat vessels over 48 trips/season/site and the data divided into transitional behaviour groups, which included stress behaviours, association / interaction behaviour and neutral behaviour. Behavioural count and time data were collected to reflect the number of times and duration of behaviour occurrence, particularly in relation to transitional behaviours. Determining the presence of stress in Hector's dolphins varied between the data sets and indicated that time is a necessary factor when attempting to determine whether an individual or a general population is genuinely stressed. Quadrant preference and swimming direction in relation to the Black Cat were observed over six years, and both count and time data were collected with regard to behaviour. The results were consistent with preference in quadrant being expressed towards the bow of the boat and least with the stern. The count data suggested no significant impact on Hector's dolphin behaviour in the presence of the Black Cat over time, where time data indicated there was a transition over the years from neutral behaviour in the second year of tour boat activity, to positive behaviour in the third year of boat-activity and finally avoidance behaviour in the seventh year of tour boat activity at Lyttelton Harbour in response to the presence of the Black Cat.

Before leaving to study abroad in Kathmandu, I was excited to learn about Nepal’s agriculture industry. As one who focuses her studies on food politics, learning that Nepal is an agrarian country was very intriguing; Nepal is agrarian to such as extent that about 80% of its citizens gain their livelihood from farming, over 30% of the GDP derives from agriculture, and most people grow their own food. I expected to learn about the culture and strategy surrounding producing food in a different yet effective way.
For my final research project while in Nepal, I chose to investigate Nepal’s potato industry and how concurrent government agricultural policies play out in the field - literally. After months of gaining experience and research, my previous vision of sustainable agriculture and happy valleys was turned upside down.

Postcolonial India is a complex and paradoxical mix of traditional practices and ultra modernity. This tension is especially apparent, and holds particular significance, with respect to women’s changing status and role. Driving this research is a concern to examine the impact that structural reforms and neoliberalism are having on women’s everyday experience of autonomy at home, in their careers and family life, and in the journeys they make from home to work through public spaces. This thesis focuses on the specific case of Assam, located in the north-eastern region of India and, within it, a sub-population of young, middle class, Assamese women. The research draws on in-depth interviews and focus groups, in triangulation with a standardised questionnaire, conducted with a sample of students pursuing higher education in five different state-funded co-educational institutions of Assam namely Cotton College, Gauhati Medical College, Assam Engineering College, Gauhati University and Bajali College which have long histories of privilege and prestige. This research is designed to look for evidence of improved status in an extreme context where the liberating benefits of education and career salience are most likely to be found. A key contribution of this thesis flows from the contradictions and complexities of the everyday practices that underpin the changing status and role of young, middle class Assamese women. The narrative analysis reveals contradictory processes underpinning women’s changing status in Assam; on one hand it shows higher education to be liberating for those who can afford access, in as much as it offers increased autonomy and exposure to international media and ‘cosmopolitan’ egalitarian ideals; on the other hand, women who seek fulfilling jobs and careers outside the home find their freedom of movement severely restricted in public by sexual harassment and at home they face continuing pressure to maintain labourintensive standards of cooking and childcare. This coincides with tensions arising from ‘new femininities’ whereby, for many within Assamese society, the participation of women in higher education and their increased visibility in paid employment is symbolic of the advancing threat of globalisation as is the proliferation of ‘immodest’ (western) modes of dress; loss of extended family welfare; and an erosion of cultural practices and religious beliefs. The research, which is an empirical contribution to existing knowledge, examines the ways that incomplete gender transformations are embedded in Assamese society. Generally it is perceived that Indian women’s subordination is explained with reference to a biological ‘naturalisation’ of sex roles or dominant patriarchal structures in state, market and family relations. This thesis challenges these perceived notions of traditional explanations by pointing to a trend of ‘Third Wave’ feminism circumscribed by plural ‘new femininities’ and ‘girl power’. At the same time the research engages with the critique of tradition identified by Hobsbawm (1983) as a variable rather than a fixed or static concept. It demonstrates that Assamese women are effectively experiencing a (re)traditionalising of their domestic roles with increased ‘Indianness’ in the social (re)production of daily life. Thus, the research also contributes to the theoretical literature on postcolonial feminism by following Mohanty’s (1987, 1988; 1991b) critique of the universality of ethnocentricism in Anglo-American scholarship and its presumptions that women of the so called Third World accept traditions passively. Evidence of the (re)production of a mix of ultra modern and perceived notion of traditional practices is presented with respect to competing spheres of daily life; including relationships with parents/in-laws and spouse, childcare, norms of domestic labour and personal goals associated with education and career. The manifestation of this process is locally specific and highly uneven and contradictory.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have attracted great interest during thelast decade due to their possession of a unique set of properties. In addition totheir strength, MWNTs have well defined morphologies, with large aspect ratiosand pores in the meso range, and intriguing transport properties, such as highelectrical and thermal conductivity.We are interested in how variations in the MWNT morphology affect areas ofpossible engineering applications. We have identified morphology as a criticalelement for the performance of MWNTs in engineering applications. Specificareas studied and reported here spans from surface adsorption and capillarycondensation, to dispersion and dispersion processes, and transport propertiesin relation to MWNT aspect ratio. This wide range of exploration is typicallyneeded for evaluating opportunities for new materials.MWNTs can be used in different types of adsorption systems and it should bepossible to tailor the MWNT morphology to suit a specific adsorption process.We found that the major part of butane, our model gas, adsorbs on the externalMWNT and only a small fraction ends up in the pores.The unusually large aspect ratio makes MWNTs ideal as fillers in polymermatrixes. Since MWNTs are electrically conductive, it is possible to align theMWNTs in the matrix before curing. We investigated the effect of AC-fields onaqueous MWNT dispersions and the possibility to align MWNTs in an electricalfield.It is also necessary to develop suitable dispersion methods, to enable theproduction of homogeneous dispersions and composites. We studied a numberof different mechanical dispersion methods and their effect on the MWNTmorphology.

A model of a gas turbine blade cooling channel equipped with turbulators and a backward facing step geometry was examined. Up to four turbulators oriented cross-stream and inclined 45° to the flow direction were mounted in the channel. The blockage ratio b/H of the turbulators and the height h/H of the backward facing step was 0:125 and 0:14 respectively. The number of turbulators as well as their size was varied. In a preliminary investigation, hot-wire and pressure measurements were taken for three different Reynolds numbers (5,000, 12,000, 18,000)in the center plane of the test section. Subsequently, particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were made on the same geometries. Results of PIV measurements for a Reynolds number range of Reb=600 to 5,000 for the turbulators and Reh=1,500 to 16,200 for the backward facing step are presented, where Reynolds numbers are based on turbulator height b and step height h, respectively. Plots of the velocity field, vorticity, reverse flow probability and RMS velocity are shown. The focus is on the steady flow behavior but also the unsteadiness of the flow is discussed in one section. Also reattachment lengths were obtained and compared among the various turbulator arrangements and the backward facing step geometry. It was found that the flow becomes periodic after three or four ribs. For one turbulator, a very large separation region was observed. The magnitude of the skin friction factor was found to be the highest for two ribs. If the first rib is replaced by a smaller rib, the skin friction factor becomes the lowest for this case. Compared to the backward facing step, the flow reattaches earlier for multiple turbulators. A dependency of reattachment length on Reynolds number was not observed.

The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the potential influence ofschool environment, administrative leadership and support, social support, and coping upon the presence of symptoms of teacher depression. The population was comprised of teachers employed in the metropolitan Atlanta area. A snowball sample, which helped the researcher to gain a comprehensive understanding, was used in effort to reach teachers in various school districts. Participants electronically submitted the surveys to ensure anonymity. The survey followed a correlational design to seek out relationships between the independent variables of school environment, administrative leadership and support, social support, and coping with the dependent variable, teacher depression. The results from this study suggest that teachers experience higher symptoms of teacher depression when school administrators are unsupportive and make high work demands and when there are negative student behaviors. Practical implications and recommendations for educational leaders to ameliorate the growing rate of depression in teachers are offered

The study basically deals with community participation for
development purposes at grassroots level through the utilisation of
the Ward System. The main purpose of the study was to establish
reasons for non-participation of the community in municipal
matters. The apparent lack of interest by the people in municipal
matters and other incidental matters that affect their daily lives in
ward 28 under Maluti-A-Phofung Town Council, has prompted the
researcher to investigate the underlying causes for such reluctance
on the part of the community.
The research study was conducted through a case study
investigation into reasons for lack of participation of the people in
the municipal structures that have been established and designed to
improve their socio- economic well-being. A qualitative,
interpretative approach has been used in attempting to establish
reasons.
The study sought to achieve its objectives by identifying reasons
for non-participation of the community. The literature study has
shown that community participation in developmental issues will
bring about visible and significant changes in people's
circumstances and environment. The authorities must therefore
always apply a people-centred approach when strategies for
development are being drawn up.
Based on the results of the investigation certain recommendations
could be formulated in connection with active community
participation and the type of relationship that should prevail

Robots that can operate in human environments in a safe and robust manner would be of great benefit to society, due to their immense potential for providing assistance to humans. However, robots have seen limited application outside of the industrial setting in environments such as homes and hospitals.
We believe a very important factor preventing the cross over of robotic technology from the factory to the house is the issue of safety. The safety issue is usually bypassed in the industrial setting by separation of human and robot workspaces. Such a solution is clearly infeasible for robots that provide assistance to humans. This thesis aims to develop intrinsically safe robots that are suitable for providing assistance to humans. We believe intrinsic safety is important in physical human robot interaction because unintended interactions will occur between humans and robots due to: (a) sharing of workspace, (b) hardware failure (computer crashes, actuator failures), (c) limitations on perception, and (d) limitations on cognition. When such unintended interactions are very fast (collisions), they are beyond the bandwidth limits of practical controllers and only the intrinsic safety characteristics of the system govern the interaction forces that occur. The effects of such interactions with traditional robots could range from persistent discomfort to bone fracture to even serious injuries. Therefore robots that serve in the application domain of human assistance should be able to function with a high tolerance for unintended interactions. This calls for a new design paradigm where operational safety is the primary concern and task accuracy/precision though important are secondary.
In this thesis, we address this new design paradigm by developing robots that have a soft inflatable structure, i.e, inflatable robots. Inflatable robots can improve intrinsic safety characteristics by being extremely lightweight and by including surface compliance (due to the compressibility of air) as well as distributed structural compliance (due to the lower Young’s modulus of the materials used) in the structure. This results in a lower effective inertia during collisions which implies a lower impact force between the inflatable robot and human. Inflatable robots can essentially be manufactured like clothes and can therefore also potentially lower the cost of robots to an extent where personal robots can be an affordable reality.
In this thesis, we present a number of inflatable robot prototypes to address challenges in the area of design and control of such systems. Specific areas addressed are: structural and joint design, payload capacity, pneumatic actuation, state estimation and control. The CMU inflatable arm is used in tasks like wiping and feeding a human to successfully demonstrate the use of inflatable robots for tasks involving close physical human interaction.

The United States possesses a well intentioned but misguided lunch program, leaving children overfed but malnourished. Currently, a revolution is under way to transform programs around the country by incorporating locally grown and fresh ingredients, as well as integrating hands-on educational experiences with gardening and nutrition. The Claremont Unified School District (CUSD) makes up a group of schools that once heavily relied on unhealthy processed foods for providing lunch. Through a series of modifications in the past three years, CUSD’s program has been remodeled to feature more local produce and fresh ingredients, independent of USDA commodities or large scale agriculture. This has led to a healthier student body as well as a more cohesive school community.
