Abstract:
ABSTRACTPersistentPseudomonas aeruginosainfections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients and are linked to the formation of a biofilm. The development of new biofilm inhibition strategies is thus a major challenge. LL-37 is the only human antimicrobial peptide derived from cathelicidin. The effects on theP. aeruginosaPAO1 strain of synthetic truncated fragments of this peptide were compared with the effects of the original peptide. Fragments of LL-37 composed of 19 residues (LL-19, LL13-31, and LL7-25) inhibited biofilm formation. The strongest antibiofilm activity was observed with the peptides LL7-37 and LL-31, which decreased the percentage of biomass formation at a very low concentration. Some peptides were also active on the bacteria within an established biofilm. LL7-31, LL-31, and LL7-37 increased the uptake of propidium iodide (PI) by sessile bacteria. The peptide LL7-37 decreased the height of the biofilm and partly disrupted it. The peptides active within the biofilm had an infrared spectrum compatible with an α-helix. LL-37, but not the peptides LL7-31 and LL7-37, showed cellular toxicity by permeabilizing the eukaryotic plasma membrane (uptake of ethidium bromide and release of lactate dehydrogenase [LDH]). None of the tested peptides affected mitochondrial activity in eukaryotic cells. In conclusion, a 25-amino-acid peptide (LL7-31) displayed both strong antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities. The peptide was even active on cells within a preformed biofilm and had reduced toxicity toward eukaryotic cells. Our results also suggest the contribution of secondary structures (α-helix) to the activity of the peptides on biofilms.

Abstract:
Background The authors postulated that hypothermic neuroprotection can be attributed to a delayed onset of ischemic depolarization. Methods Halothane-anesthetized rats were prepared for near-complete forebrain ischemia. Direct current (DC) potential microelectrodes were placed in hippocampal CA1. The pericranial temperature was maintained at 31 degrees C, 33 degrees C, 35 degrees C, or 37 degrees C (n = 6 per group). Bilateral carotid occlusion with systemic hypotension was initiated for 10 min. The time to onset of the DC shift was recorded. In a second experiment, rats were assigned to 37 degrees C or 31 degrees C for 10 min of ischemia, or to 31 degrees C for 14 min of ischemia (n = 8 per group). These durations of ischemia were defined to allow 9 min of ischemic depolarization in the 37 degrees C-10 min and 31 degrees C-14 min groups. Neurologic and histologic outcomes were examined 7 days later. Results Hippocampal CA1 time to depolarization increased with decreasing temperature (P < 0.0001). Time to depolarization was increased by approximately 4 min in the rats maintained at 31 degrees C compared with those at 37 degrees C. Time to repolarization during reperfusion was not affected by temperature. Increasing the duration of ischemia from 10 min to 14 min with the pericranial temperature maintained at 31 degrees C resulted in a duration of depolarization that was equivalent in the 37 degrees C-10 min and 31 degrees C-14 min groups. However, hippocampal CA1 damage was not increased (31 degrees C-10 min = 4 +/- 1% dead neurons; 31 degrees C-14 min = 6 +/- 1% dead neurons, 95% CI, -1% to 3%; 37 degrees C-10 min = 90 +/- 17% dead neurons). Conclusions Despite similar durations of DC depolarization, outcome in hypothermic rats was markedly improved compared with normothermic rats. This indicates that hypothermic neuroprotection can be attributed to mechanisms other than the delay in time to onset of ischemic depolarization.

Abstract:
Background The aim of this study was to determine whether progressive levels of hypothermia (37, 34, 31, or 28 degrees C) during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in pigs reduce the physiologic and metabolic consequences of global cerebral ischemia. Methods Sagittal sinus and cortical microdialysis catheters were inserted into anesthetized pigs. Animals were placed on CPB and randomly assigned to 37 degrees C (n = 10), 34 degrees C (n = 10), 31 degrees C (n = 11), or 28 degrees C (n = 10) management. Next 20 min of global cerebral ischemia was produced by temporarily ligating the innominate and left subclavian arteries, followed by reperfusion, rewarming, and termination of CPB. Cerebral oxygen metabolism (CMRO2) was calculated by cerebral blood flow (radioactive microspheres) and arteriovenous oxygen content gradient. Cortical excitatory amino acids (EAA) by microdialysis were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography. Electroencephalographic (EEG) signals were graded by observers blinded to the protocol. After CPB, cerebrospinal fluid was sampled to test for S-100 protein and the cerebral cortex was biopsied. Results Cerebral oxygen metabolism increased after rewarming from 28 degrees C, 31 degrees C, and 34 degrees C CPB but not in the 37 degrees animals; CMRO2 remained lower with 37 degrees C (1.8 +/- 0.2 ml x min[-1] x 100 g[-1]) than with 28 degrees C (3.1 +/- 0.1 ml x min[-1] x 100 g[-1]; P < 0.05). The EEG scores after CPB were depressed in all groups and remained significantly lower in the 37 degrees C animals. With 28 degrees C and 31 degrees C CPB, EAA concentrations did not change. In contrast, glutamate increased by sixfold during ischemia at 37 degrees C and remained significantly greater during reperfusion in the 34 degrees C and 37 degrees C groups. Cortical biopsy specimens showed no intergroup differences in energy metabolites except two to three times greater brain lactate in the 37 degrees C animals. S-100 protein in cerebrospinal fluid was greater in the 37 degrees C (6 +/- 0.9 microg/l) and 34 degrees C (3.5 +/- 0.5 microg/l) groups than the 31 degrees C (1.9 +/- 0.1 microg/l) and 28 degrees C (1.7 +/- 0.2 microg/l) animals. Conclusions Hypothermia to 28 degrees C and 31 degrees C provides significant cerebral recovery from 20 min of global ischemia during CPB in terms of EAA release, EEG and cerebral metabolic recovery, and S-100 protein release without greater advantage from cooling to 28 degrees C compared with 31 degrees C. In contrast, ischemia during 34 degrees C and particularly 37 degrees C CPB showed greater EAA release and evidence of neurologic morbidity. Cooling to 31 degrees C was necessary to improve acute recovery during global cerebral ischemia on CPB.

Abstract:
Background: Coronary artery diseases (CAD) are big health problem in both developed and developing countries. It is considered one of the main causes of death in the world. Dyslipidemia increases the risk of CAD incidences. It is aimed in this worktop study the impact of 3'APOBVNTRgene on CAD incidences. Methods: Eighty CAD patients and ninety-three healthy volunteers are enrolled in this study. Lipid parameters were estimated in both groups and PCR technique has been performed to analyze 3'APOB-VNTR gene polymorphism. Results: The genotypes 31/31, 31/37, 37/37 and 31/44 are more predominant in both groups. The frequency of 24/31 in CAD patients is (0.137) while it is completely absent in the control group. Our results show that there is an increase in the frequency of various genotypes (e.g., 17/31 and 21/34 genotypes) in the control group compared to theca patients group. Conclusions: 3'APOB-VNTR gene could probably be considered a risk factor for CAD incidences and may help to early diagnose them.

Abstract:
e16212 Background: 177Lu-dotatate (LuPRRT) is effective in selected patients with metastatic neuroendocrine tumours (NETs). Most of these patients will subsequently have progressive disease with limited treatment options available. We analyzed the outcomes and toxicities of salvage LuPRRT in this study. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. Patients who had salvage LuPRRT at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) from November 2016 to January 2021 were identified and included in this study. We manually reviewed the hospital electronic medical records and radiology databases to review patient characteristics, outcomes, and toxicities from salvage LuPRRT. Results: Of the 37 patients included, 37.8% (14/37) had small bowel primary, 27.0% (10/37) had pancreatic primary and 10.8% (4/37) had pulmonary primary. 83.8% (31/37) received 4 cycles of initial LuPRRT (I-PRRT) with a median dose of 32.0 GBq. The median duration of response to I-PRRT was 31 months. These patients had salvage LuPRRT (R-PRRT) on progression with 83.8% (31/37) received 2 cycles with a median cumulative 177LuTate dose of 48.0 GBq. Partial response, stable disease and progressive disease were observed in 10.8% (4/37), 40.5% (15/37) and 27.0% (10/37) of patients respectively. Median duration of response with R-PRRT was 8 months. 2.7% (1/37) developed Grade 3 anaemia and 2.7% (1/37) developed Grade 3 thrombocytopenia with R-PRRT. 8.1% (3/37) developed nephrotoxicity Grade 1 nephrotoxicity. 21.6% (8/37) of patients had re-retreatment with further LuPRRT (RR-PRRT) on progression. The median retreatment cycles were 2 and the median cumulative 177LuTate dose received was 58.8 GBq. Partial response, stable disease and progressive disease were seen in 25% (2/8), 12.5% (1/8) and 62.5% (5/8) of patients respectively. Median duration of response with RR-PRRT was 4 months. There were no reported Grade 3 haematologic toxicities with RR-PRRT. 1 patient developed Grade 1 nephrotoxicity with RR-PRRT. At time of data analysis in April 2021, 27% (10/37) had ongoing response while 73% (27/37) had progressed. Conclusions: Salvage LuPRRT is an effective and safe treatment option for selected patients with progressive metastatic NETs.

Abstract:
The article considers morphology, chemical and phase composition of composite boro-carbon coatings, received by ion-plasma synthesis, depending on the boron content. Specimens of carbon coating doped with boron were obtained in vacuum unit by combined method coupled with co-deposition of carbon layer from pulse carbon plasma and its doping with boron atom flow. The obtained specimens of composite CC had embedded boron atoms with various concentration (NB), namely, 2.3 at.% were contained in ɑ-С91.2:B2.3, in ɑ-С79.3:B17.4 — 17.4 at.%, in ɑ-С53.3:B43.2 — 43.2 at.%. Carbon structures and carbon clusters graphitization were examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Aiming at chemical interaction between carbon and boron in CC establishment we conducted mathematical processing of XPS for energy states C1s, B1s, O1s of carbon, boron and oxygen atoms. XPS C1s was presented as peaks superposition with centers located at 284.5; 285.5; 283.5 and 288 eV and consequently responsible for Csp2 , Csp3, C–B and C–О carbon atom interaction. With the growth of NB in boron-doped carbon coating a grain structure is formed, its size and grain orientation regarding the surface of the substrate increase, resulting in a decrease in the coating layer surface roughness.

Abstract:
The article examines the characteristics of the participation of citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan in foreign conflicts as an object of criminal investigation. The mechanisms for the emergence of foreign armed conflicts, as well as the reasons and conditions that facilitate the participation of citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan, have been examined. In the course of the study of international legislation and international experience in regulating public relations in this area, specific recommendations and methodology for studying of the participation of citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan in foreign conflicts have been developed as an independent research object. Due to the lack of legal means for bringing persons who took part in fighting abroad to responsibility, the criminal liability of citizens for involvement in armed conflicts in the territory of foreign states was introduced in domestic legislation. The authors of the study identified the public danger of the crime, which meant that citizens of Kazakhstan, when returning to their home country, by acquiring a subversive-terrorist experience, could contribute to the commission of crimes directed against the national security of the Republic of Kazakhstan. According to the findings of the study, successful and effective opposition to the participation of citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan in foreign conflicts depends largely on the degree of theoretical development of the considered problem.

Abstract:
Human adenovirus-36 (Ad-36) increases adiposity in chickens, mice, and nonhuman primates and is associated with human obesity. Ad-36 paradoxically reduces serum cholesterol and triglycerides in animal models. Ad-36 increases adipocyte differentiation and triglyceride accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells in vitro. This study evaluated whether three other human adenoviruses increase adiposity in chickens and in 3T3-L1 cells in vitro. We inoculated chickens with human Ad-2, Ad-31, Ad-37, or media at age 3 wk. Food intake and weights were recorded for 3.5 wk, and then chickens were killed and visceral fat, body composition, serum lipids, and viral antibody status were determined. Visceral fat and total body fat were significantly elevated ( P < 0.001) in the Ad-37 group compared with all other groups. Final body weights were higher in chickens inoculated with Ad-37 compared with Ad-2, but not significantly higher than in control or Ad-31 groups. Food intake did not differ among groups. Serum cholesterol was elevated in Ad-37 chickens compared with control ( P < 0.01) but was not affected by other viruses. Triglycerides were reduced in Ad-37 chickens ( P < 0.0001) but were not affected by other viruses. In 3T3-L1 cells in vitro, Ad-31, Ad-36, and Ad-37, but not Ad-2, increased adipocyte differentiation and triglycerides accumulation. In summary, Ad-37 is another human adenovirus that increases adiposity and reduces serum triglycerides in an animal model. However, the response of serum cholesterol is opposite that of Ad-36. Evaluation of other human adenoviruses to determine their effects on adiposity and serum lipids is warranted, but in vitro assays may not be definitive for this purpose.

Abstract:

The purpose of the research was to assess wild-growing samples of the crested wheatgrass and isolate genetic sources of economically valuable traits for breeding in the Stavropol Territory. The research was carried out in 2017–2020. The material of the study – 22 wild specimens of crested wheatgrass (Agropyron pectiniforme Roem. et Shult.) of various ecological and geographical origin. The crested wheatgrass variety ‘Vikrav’ served as the standard. During the years of study, meteorological conditions were extremely dry. The assessment of the samples was carried out according to the guidelines for the selection of perennial cereal grasses. The experiment was laid on bare fallow, plot area – 3 m2. Sowing and maintenance work were carried out manually. On average, for three years (2018–2020), the yield of green mass of the studied samples ranged from 0.15 to 0.94 kg/m2; dry – from 0.07 to 0.38 kg/m2; seeds – from 0.015 to 0.070 kg/m2. Samples from Ukraine (d.d. 28, 30), Chelyabinsk region (d. 31) and Kazakhstan (d.d. 34 and 37) were more productive in terms of fodder weight. In terms of seed productivity, in the first year, wild samples from Aktobe (d. 5) and Chelyabinsk regions (d. 31), from Ukraine (d. 25) and Kazakhstan (d.d. 34 and 37) were distinguished. In the second year of herbage use – from the Chelyabinsk region (d. 31) and Kazakhstan (d.d. 35 and 37). In the third year of use, no significant excess over the standard was found. On average, over three years of use, wild specimens d. 31, d. 34, and d. 37 exceeded the standard in seed yield by 0.020-0.033 kg/m2. Wild specimens from the Chelyabinsk region (d. 31) and Kazakhstan (d. 34) were isolated according to the complex of valuable characteristics for use in breeding in the Stavropol Territory.

Abstract:
Abstract Development of Graves' disease is related to HLA-DR3. The extracellular domain (ECD) of human TSH receptor (hTSH-R) is a crucial antigen in Graves' disease. hTSH-R peptide 37 (amino acids 78–94) is an important immunogenic peptide in DR3 transgenic mice immunized to hTSH-R. This study examined the epitope recognition in DR3 transgenic mice immunized to hTSH-R protein and evaluated the ability of a mutant hTSH-R peptide to attenuate the immunogenicity of hTSH-R peptide 37. DR3 transgenic mice were immunized to recombinant hTSH-R-ECD protein or peptides. A mutant hTSH-R 37 peptide (ISRIYVSIDATLSQLES: 37m), in which DR3 binding motif position 5 was mutated V>A, and position 8 Q>S, was synthesized. 37m should bind to HLA-DR3 but not bind T cell receptors. DR3 transgenic mice were immunized to hTSH-R 37 and 37m. Mice immunized to hTSH-R-ECD protein developed strong anti-hTSH-R antibody, and antisera reacted strongly with hTSH-R peptides 1–5 (20–94), 21 (258–277), 41 (283–297), 36 (376–389), and 31 (399–418). Strikingly, antisera raised to hTSH-R peptide 37 bound to hTSH-R peptides 1–7 (20–112), 10 (132–50), 33 (137–150), 41, 23 (286–305), 24 (301–320), 36, and 31 as well as to hTSH-R-ECD protein. Both antibody titers to hTSH-R 37 and reaction of splenocytes to hTSH-R 37 were significantly reduced in mice immunized to hTSH-R 37 plus 37m, compared with mice immunized to hTSH-R 37 alone. The ability of immunization to a single peptide to induce antibodies that bind hTSH-R-ECD protein, and multiple unrelated peptides, is a unique observation. Immunogenic reaction to hTSH-R peptide 37 was partially suppressed by 37m, and this may contribute to immunotherapy of autoimmune thyroid disease.

Abstract:
Recently, a zona-free technique for bovine somatic cell nuclear transfer (NT) with no requirement for micromanipulation (i.e. hand-made cloning (HMC)) has been described. The present study demonstrates the application of the HMC technique in the production of transgenic porcine blastocysts. In vitro-matured zona-free porcine oocytes were bisected manually using a microblade and halves containing no chromatin (i.e. the cytoplasts) were selected. Two cytoplasts were electrofused with one transgenic fibroblast expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein and reconstructed embryos were activated in calcium ionophore (A23187) followed by 6-dimethylaminopurine. Subsequently, embryos were cultured in NCSU-23 medium supplemented with 4 mg mL–1 bovine serum albumin for 7 days. In five replicates, 93.0 ± 7.0% (mean ± s.e.m.) of attempted reconstructed embryos fused and survived activation (31/31, 15/23, 28/28, 37/37 and 28/28). On Day 7 after activation, the respective blastocyst rates (per successfully reconstructed embryos) were 6% (2/31), 7% (1/15), 7% (2/28), 3% (1/37) and 7% (2/28), resulting in an average of 6.0 ± 0.8%. Enhanced green fluorescent protein was expressed in all cells of all eight developing blastocysts. Efforts are now directed towards the production of offspring from such transgenic NT blastocysts.

Abstract:
Tilapia ovary cells (TO-2) cease to proliferate when moved from normal growth temperature of 31 degrees C to 37 degrees C, and arrest in G1 and G2 phases of the cell cycle. The ability of the arrested cells to re-enter the cell cycle when restored to 31 degrees C decreases inversely with time spent at 37 degrees C. A heat-resistant strain, TO-37c, cloned from the surviving fraction of TO-2 after heat treatment, has been found to re-enter the cell cycle with greater facility and to have a higher rate of survival. TO-37c cells have a smaller cell volume than TO-2 and show a distinct morphology at 37 degrees C. Most of the heat-shock proteins (hsps) induced on temperature change were similar, but in TO-37c the decline in the synthesis of a 27 X 10(3) Mr hsp was faster and a 37 degrees C-specific 60 X 10(3) Mr hsp was missing. Ultraviolet (u.v.) sensitivity was slightly affected if heat treatment was given after irradiation. However, when cells were preheated and then u.v. irradiated, the u.v. sensitivity increased sharply for TO-2 cells but not for TO-37c.

Abstract:
Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a chronic disease that involves long-term inflammation of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Bacterial biofilms present on the sinus mucosa of certain patients reportedly exhibit resistance against traditional antibiotics, as evidenced by relapse, resulting in severe disease. The aim of this study was to determine the killing activity of human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptides (LL-37, LL-31) and their D-enantiomers (D-LL-37, D-LL-31), alone and in combination with conventional antibiotics (amoxicillin; AMX and tobramycin; TOB), against bacteria grown as biofilm, and to investigate the biological activities of the peptides on human lung epithelial cells. D-LL-31 was the most effective peptide against bacteria under biofilm-stimulating conditions based on IC50 values. The synergistic effect of D-LL-31 with AMX and TOB decreased the IC50 values of antibiotics by 16-fold and could eliminate the biofilm matrix in all tested bacterial strains. D-LL-31 did not cause cytotoxic effects in A549 cells at 25 μM after 24 h of incubation. Moreover, a cytokine array indicated that there was no significant induction of the cytokines involving in immunopathogenesis of CRS in the presence of D-LL-31. However, a tissue-remodeling-associated protein was observed that may prevent the progression of nasal polyposis in CRS patients. Therefore, a combination of D-LL-31 with AMX or TOB may improve the efficacy of currently used antibiotics to kill biofilm-embedded bacteria and eliminate the biofilm matrix. This combination might be clinically applicable for treatment of patients with biofilm-associated CRS.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the method of “ascent from the abstract to the concrete” in relation to the abstract fine arts. An analogy is drawn between the concepts of “abstract” and “concrete” in philosophy and fine arts. The interpretations of these categories by Hegel and К. Marx are indicated. The authors distinguished the features that determine the abstract essence of a work of fine art, including thematic content, expressiveness, emotionality and communication. The systematization of works of art according to the degree of abstraction is proposed. The names of the most typical representatives of various directions of abstract art are given.

Abstract:
Dallisgrass control in response to various timings and frequencies of single and combination herbicide treatments was evaluated from 2010 to 2012 in Lubbock, TX. Treatments included thiencarbazone-methyl + foramsulfuron + halosulfuron-methyl (TFH) at 15 + 31 + 47 or 22 + 45 + 70 g a.i./ha, foramsulfuron at 106 g a.i./ha, and foramsulfuron + thiencarbazone-methyl + iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium + dicamba (foramsulfuron + TID) at 106 + (22 + 5 + 147) g a.i./ha. Applications of TFH provided ≤65% dallisgrass control by 10 weeks after initial treatment (WAIT) across two rates (15 + 31 + 47 or 22 + 45 + 70 g a.i./ha) and three application timings [September, October, or September followed by (fb) a sequential October application]. At 37 WAIT, sequential applications of TFH at 15 + 31 + 47 g a.i./ha resulted in 92% dallisgrass control. Similarly, application of TFH at 22 + 45 + 70 g a.i./ha provided 94% and 97% dallisgrass control when applied in September or September fb October, respectively. However, single October applications of TFH only provided ≤55% dallisgrass control 37 WAIT. Sequential combinations of foramsulfuron + TID at 106 + (22 + 5 + 147) g a.i./ha provided 93% dallisgrass control 37 WAIT, equivalent to single applications of TFH at 15 + 31 + 47 g a.i./ha and sequential treatments at 15 + 31 + 47 or 22 + 45 + 70 g a.i./ha. However, initial control (10 WAIT) with foramsulfuron + TID was moderate (63%). Sequential foramsulfuron applications (106 g a.i./ha) resulted in inadequate dallisgrass control (35% and 48%) 10 and 37 WAIT, respectively. Results from this study suggest that long-term dallisgrass control may be achieved when TFH is applied in September or September fb October. Applications initiated in October resulted in inadequate control, regardless of rate, which may be linked to reduced herbicidal absorption and translocation due to the onset of dallisgrass dormancy in late fall. Chemical names used: methyl 4-[(4,5-dihydro-3-methoxy-4-methyl-5-oxo-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)carbonylsulfamoyl]-5-methylthiophene-3-carboxylate (thiencarbazone-methyl); 2-[(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)carbamoylsulfamoyl]-4-formamido-N,N-dimethylbenzamide (foramsulfuron); methyl 3-chloro-5-[(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)carbamoylsulfamoyl]-1-methylpyrazole-4-carboxylate (halosulfuron-methyl); sodium (5-iodo-2-methoxycarbonylphenyl)sulfonyl-[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)carbamoyl]azanide (iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium); and 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid (dicamba).

Abstract:
Background Hypothermia has been shown to decrease the requirement for inhaled anesthetics in animals, but information in humans is limited. Methods Thirty-three unpremedicated children with congenital left-to-right shunt heart diseases undergoing open heart surgeries were assigned to one of three groups, with nasopharyngeal temperatures at the time of skin incision of 37, 34, or 31 degrees C. Anesthesia was induced and maintained with isoflurane in oxygen. End-tidal isoflurane concentration and nasopharyngeal temperature were kept at stable levels for at least 15 min before the skin incision. Isoflurane minimum alveolar concentration was determined by using the Dixon up-and-down approach. Results Isoflurane minimum alveolar concentration values were 1.69 +/- 0.14%, 1.47 +/- 0.10%, and 1.22 +/- 0.15% (mean +/- SD) at 37, 34, and 31 degrees C, respectively. Conclusions Hypothermia decreases the isoflurane requirement in children by 5.1 degrees C.

AbstractObjective: In a previous study, we assembled a multidisciplinary Canadian panel and identified 37 International Classification of Diseases-10-Canada Diagnosis Groups (DGs) for which emergency department (ED) management may potentially reduce mortality (emergency-sensitive conditions). Before using these 37 DGs to calculate a hospital standardized mortality ratio (HSMR) specific to emergency care, we aimed to test their face validity with ED care providers. Methods: We conducted a self-administered web survey among Canadian emergency physicians and nurses between November 22 and December 31, 2012. All members (N=2,507) of the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians and the National Emergency Nurses Association were surveyed. They were asked to agree or disagree (binary response) with the panel classification for each of the 37 DG emergency-sensitive conditions identified and provide free text responses to identify missing entities. Results: A total of 719 ED providers (719 of 2,507, 29%) completed the survey, of whom 470 were physicians (470 of 1,407, 33%) and 232 were nurses (232 of 1,100, 21%). Information on professional status was not provided for 17 respondents. Of 37 DGs, 32 (e.g., A41 sepsis) were rated by more than 80% of respondents to be emergency-sensitive conditions. The remaining five DGs (e.g., E11 type 2 diabetes mellitus) were rated by 68.5 to 79.7% of the respondents to be emergency-sensitive conditions. Respondents suggested an additional 31 emergency-sensitive diagnoses. Conclusion: We identified 37 emergency-sensitive DGs that had high face validity with emergency physicians and nurses, which will enable the calculation of an ED-HSMR.

Abstract:
The Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto downregulates outer surface protein A (OspA) and upregulates outer surface protein C (OspC) during tick feeding. The switching of these proteins correlates with increased spirochetal infectivity for the mammal. We examined the effect of temperature on differential expression of OspA and OspC by B. burgdorferi cocultivated with a cell line isolated from the vector tick Ixodes scapularis. The effect of incubation at 31, 34, or 37°C on expression of OspA and OspC by B. burgdorferi JMNT and N40 was analyzed by indirect fluorescent-antibody microscopy, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and immunoblotting. The amount of OspA relative to the amount of flagellin was highest in spirochetes cocultivated with tick cells at 31°C and declined with increasing temperature in both strains. OspC production was enhanced in spirochetes cocultivated with tick cells at 37°C. Spirochetes grown axenically in BSK-H medium also produced more OspC at 37°C, but OspA content was not appreciably affected by temperature. Our findings indicate that temperature, along with cultivation in a tick cell culture system, plays a role in the differential expression of OspA and enhances differential expression of OspC by spirochetes.

The incidence of DDH did not differ between the groups (11.6%, 9.4%, 13.6% and 11.5%, in 23–27, 28–31, 32–36 and ≥37 weeks, respectively, p=0.40). Sixty infants required intervention for DDH. Multiple logistic regression after correcting for potential confounders showed that gestational age group did not influence the risk of DDH, and requirement of therapy.ConclusionPreterm infants born with breech presentation appear to have a similar incidence of DDH to term breech infants.

Abstract:
Purpose To compare the antitumor efficacy of three different anthracyclines in combination with cytarabine and etoposide in adult patients with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Patients and Methods We randomly assigned 2,157 patients (age range, 15 to 60 years) to receive intensive induction-consolidation chemotherapy containing either daunorubicin, idarubicin, or mitoxantrone. After achieving complete remission (CR), patients were assigned to undergo either allogeneic or autologous stem-cell transplantation (SCT), depending on the availability of a sibling donor. Results The overall CR rate (69%) was similar in the three groups. Autologous SCT was performed in 37% of cases in the daunorubicin arm versus only 29% and 31% in mitoxantrone and idarubicin, respectively (P < .001). However, the disease-free survival (DFS) and survival from CR were significantly shorter in the daunorubicin arm: the 5-year DFS was 29% versus 37% and 37% in mitoxantrone and idarubicin, respectively. The proportion of patients who underwent allogeneic SCT (22%) was equivalent in the three treatment groups, and the outcome was similar as well: the 5-year overall survival rates were 34%, 34%, and 31%, respectively. Conclusion In adult patients with AML who do not receive an allogeneic SCT, the use of mitoxantrone or idarubicin instead of daunorubicin enhances the long-term efficacy of chemotherapy.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the role and tasks of the Soviet workers' council in the process of establishing the Soviet power in the western regions of Ukrainian SSR in 1939–1941. The paper touches upon the issue of the gradual formation of the Soviet branch of power in the region and its staffing, dependence of the representative branch of power and its executive structures from the party committees of the Executive Committee of the Communist Party (VKP (b)) and Communist Party of Ukraine (Bolsheviks) (CP(b)U), as well as the highest state authorities. It is emphasized that the formal character of decision-making regarding the most important socio-political and economic changes in the region by the representative organs of the Ukrainian SSR and local authorities pushed the Western Ukrainians away from the process of Soviet democracy and Soviet power in general. Keywords: Western regions of Ukrainian SSR, Sovietization, the activity of the soviets (councils), decorative democracy.
