Abstract:
Moisture damage of the asphalt mixture is defined as the loss of strength, stiffness and durability due to the presence of moisture (in a liquid or vapour state) leading to adhesive failure at the aggregate-bitumen interface and/or the cohesive failure within the bitumen or bitumen-filler mastic. The presence of moisture can accelerate the distress of asphalt pavement in several different modes, such as rutting, fatigue cracking, thermal cracking and the formation of potholes. In the field, the moisture damage normally happens first at the interface of two pavement layers or at the bottom of p

Following the attacks of September 11th, 2001, Guy Debord’s concept of ‘the spectacle’ re-emerged in the work of a variety of theorists as a critical prism through which the attacks and subsequent ‘War on Terror’ could be approached. Debord’s first book on the spectacle (1967) was written in the context of France’s post-war boom; his later reflections, contained in a series of minor works written throughout the seventies and eighties, are heavily influenced by Italy’s ‘Years of Lead’ and a broader geopolitical climate of armed struggle, terrorism, counter-insurgency and espionage. This thesis attempts to recover the voice of those termed ‘delusional’ and gives reasons why they should have a place in the ‘conversation of humanity’. It does this by challenging what I identify as a view of language use that I call the ‘monological (as opposed to dialogical) folk-scientific observer’ picture. I argue that it is the poverty of this picture that leads to the idea that delusions are empty speech acts, incomprehensible, or irrational and incorrigible false beliefs. Abstract:
The classical Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has a complete feed-forward topology, which is useful in some contexts but is not suited to applications where both the inputs and targets have very low signal-to-noise ratios, e.g. financial forecasting problems. This is because this topology implies a very large number of parameters (i.e. the model contains too many degrees of freedom) that leads to over fitting of both signals and noise. This results in the ANN having very good in-sample performance on the data used for its training but poor performance outof-sample for forecasting. The main con

This decreases the liver’s ability to clear LDL-cholesterol from the blood.

Abstract:
Background: Given the rapid expansion of antiretroviral therapy (ART) services in South Africa, there is growing recognition of the importance of fertility intentions, contraceptive use and childbearing among women living with HIV (WLHIV). With the integration of family planning services in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) services, understanding fertility intentions and contraceptive use is crucial in evaluating such programs. We investigated the relationship between future fertility intentions, contraceptive use and repeat pregnancies among WLHIV in Cape Town, So

Abstract:
Regulations require banks to hold a minimum amount of capital for market risk resulting from their trading operations and prescribe two approaches to calculating this minimum capital requirement: (i) a Standardised Approach (SA); and (ii) an Internal Models Approach (IMA). The global financial crisis of 2008 highlighted flaws in the Basel 2 regulatory framework used by banks to calculate market risk capital charges for trading operations. In 2009, Basel 2.5 was introduced to deal with some but not all of the flaws of Basel 2. Both Basel 2 and 2.5 use the Value at Risk (VaR) risk measure as the

Abstract:
In the operation of unmanned vehicles, safety is a primary concern. This thesis focuses on the use of computer vision in the development of a situational awareness system that allows for safe deployment and operation of a ground robot from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). A method for detecting utility cables in 3D range images is presented. This technique finds areas of an image that represent edges in 3D space, and uses the Hough transform to find those edges that take the shape of lines, indicating potential utility cables. A mission plan for stereo image capture is laid out as well for ov

The purpose of this study was to examine stress that MFT graduate students experience in their personal lives. The researcher developed a 31-item quantitative and qualitative questionnaire to identify factors that relate to stress experienced by MFT graduate students and coping resources and strategies that MFT graduate students use to handle their stress. Fifty-seven percent (57%) of the 500 student members surveyed responded to the mailed questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, as well as quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted. Quantitative results revealed that 94% MFT graduate

Abstract:
Sacral insufficiency fractures are an under-diagnosed source of acute lower back pain. A polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement injection procedure called sacroplasty has recently been utilized as a treatment for sacral insufficiency fractures. It is believed that injection of cement reduces fracture micromotion, thus relieving pain. In this study, finite element models were used to examine the mechanical effects of sacroplasty. Finite element models were constructed from CT images of cadavers on which sacroplasties were performed. The images were used to create the mesh geometry, and to apply

Since the Depression era there has been an evolution in parkway usage. Parkways have outlived their recreational function and now must also serve as routes to recreational facilities. Since the elemental use of parkways has drastically changed, questions of how and why beg to be answered. How has parkway design and construction changed from the Depression era to today in terms of views, alignment, vegetation, natural and cultural features, and parkway details. How is parkway design and construction different from that of typical roadways; and how does this information effect the future design

Abstract:
Certain urban public spaces seem to embody the cities in which they are found, helping to make those cities the vibrant places they are. This project explores how urban public spaces can be created to reflect the vitality of the city by embracing the culture and the people who reside in it. Through literature review and case studies, a framework is developed focusing on the areas of identity and use in the design of public spaces. Identity is looked at in terms of place attachment, spatial identity, and how surrounding uses affect the identity of a space. Use is explored in terms of desig
