Compression is a known technique used by many database management systems ("DBMS") to increase performance[4, 5, 14]. However, not much research has been done in how compression can be used within column oriented architectures. Storing data in column increases the similarity between adjacent records, thus increase the compressibility of the data. In addition, compression schemes not traditionally used in row-oriented DBMSs can be applied to column-oriented systems. This thesis presents a column-oriented query executor designed to operate directly on compressed data. 'We show that operating directly on compressed data can improve query performance. Additionally, the choice of compression scheme depends on the expected query workload, suggesting that for ad-hoc queries we may wish to store a column redundantly under different coding schemes. Furthermore, the executor is designed to be extensible so that the addition of new compression schemes does not impact operator implementation. The executor is part of a larger database system, known as CStore [10].

For a deregulated electricity industry, we consider a general electricity market structure with both long-term bilateral agreements and short-term spot market such that the system users can hedge the volatility of the real-time market. From a Transmission Service Provider's point of view, optimal transmission resource allocation between these two markets poses a very interesting decision making problem for a defined performance criteria under uncertainties. In this thesis, the decision-making is posed as a stochastic dynamic programming problem, and through simulations the strength of this method is demonstrated. This resource allocation problem is first posed as a centrally coordinated dynamic programming problem, computed by one entity at a system- wide level. This problem is shown to be, under certain assumptions, solvable in a deterministic setup. However, implementation for a large transmission system requires the algorithm to handle stochastic inputs and stochastic cost functions. It is observed that the curse of dimensionality makes this centralized optimization infeasible. Thesis offers certain remedies to the computational issues, but motivates a partially distributed setup and related optimization functions for a better decision making in large networks where the intelligent system users drive the use of network resources. Formulations are introduced to reflect mathematical and policy constraints that are crucial to distributed network operations in power systems.

The purpose of this low-load material testing machine is to provide students an opportunity to perform basic material tests on their own instead of watching a lab technician, thus improving the student's lab experience. The machine proposed is small, low cost, and easy to manufacture, assemble, and operate. Its design is based on a compound flexure mechanism that provides rectilinear motion for uniaxial tension and compression tests. It is actuated by a voice coil and displacement is measured using strain gauges. This thesis outlines some of the basic theory involved in the design and use of this low-load machine. Then it details calibration routines and tension testing procedures. Next, it analyzes results from tension tests. Then it discusses a possible source of error found in the tension tests, a lack of rigidity in the apparatus. Finally, it provides a reasonable solution to the rigidity issue and suggests further testing of the new apparatus before it is available for student use.

Modern data networks are approaching the state where a large number of independent and heterogeneous paths are available between a source node and destination node. In this work, we explore the case where each path has an independent level of reliability characterized by a probability of path failure. Instead of simply repeating the message across all the paths, we use the path diversity to achieve reliable transmission of messages by using a coding technique known as an erasure correcting code. We develop a model of the network and present an analysis of the system that invokes the Central Limit Theorem to approximate the total number of bits received from all the paths. We then optimize the number of bits to send over each path in order to maximize the probability of receiving a sufficient number of bits at the destination to reconstruct the message using the erasure correcting code. Three cases are investigated: when the paths are very reliable, when the paths are very unreliable, and when the paths have a probability of failure within an interval surrounding 0.5. We present an overview of the mechanics of an erasure coding process applicable to packet-based transactions. Finally, as avenues for further research, we discuss several applications of erasure coding in networks that have only a single path between source and destination: for latency reduction in interactive web sessions; as a transport layer for critical messaging; and an application layer protocol for high-bandwidth networks.

In contemporary Western society, electronic devices are becoming so prevalent that many people find themselves surrounded by technologies they find frustrating or annoying. The electronics industry has little incentive to address this complaint; I designed two counter-technologies to help people defend their personal space from unwanted electronic intrusion. Both devices were designed and prototyped with reference to the culture-jamming "Design Noir" philosophy. The first is a pair of glasses that darken whenever a television is in view. The second is low- power RF jammer capable of preventing cell phones or similarly intrusive wireless devices from operating within a user's personal space. By building functional prototypes that reflect equal consideration of technical and social issues, I identify three attributes of Noir products: Personal empowerment, participation in a critical discourse, and subversion.

This thesis describes the design, and validation of a maximum power point tracking DC-DC converter capable of following the true global maximum power point in the presence of other local maximum. It does this without the use of costly components such as analog-to-digital converters and microprocessors. It substantially increases the efficiency of solar power conversion by allowing solar cells to operate at their ideal operating point regardless of changes in load, and illumination. The converter switches between a dithering algorithm which tracks the local maximum and a global search algorithm for ensuring that the converter is operating at the true global maximum.

We propose data structures to describe and query streaming RFID and sensor data. Furthermore, we propose an architecture built atop these data structures to build arbitrary real-time applications. To understand the nature of these applications, we decompose such systems into four layers: Physical, Data, Filtering, and Application. We describe each layer in terms of our presented data structures, and we discuss architecture optimizations in terms of Bandwidth, Computational Capacity, and Subsystem Transparency. We provide an implementation of Track and Trace and Cold-Chain model applications to demonstrate our architecture.

Montabert, Cyril. "Supporting Requirements Reuse in a User-centric Design Framework through Task Modeling and Critical Parameters." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33152.
Full textBetter establishing requirements will benefit design. By adapting task-modeling techniques to support critical parameters within the requirements-analysis phase of scenario-based design, we are able to provide designers with a systematic technique for capturing requirements in a reusable form that enables and encourages knowledge transfer early in the development process. The research work presented concentrates on the domain of notification systems, as previous research efforts led to the identification of three critical parameters.
Contributions of this work include establishment of a structured process for capturing critical-parameter requirements within a user-centric design framework and introduction of knowledge reuse at the requirements phase. On one hand, adapting task models to capture requirements bridges the gap between scenarios and critical parameters, which benefits design from user involvement and accurate requirements. On the other hand, using task models as a reusable component leverages requirements reuse which benefits design by increasing quality while reducing development costs and time-to-market.

Vincent, Amelia A. "Evaluation of Phosphorus Transport and Transformations in GLEAMS 3.0." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33156.
Full textThe overall goal of this research was to improve simulation of soil phosphorus (P) transport and transformations in GLEAMS 3.0, a non-point source model that simulates edge-of-field and bottom-of-root-zone loadings of nutrients from climate-soil-management interactions to assess management alternatives. The objectives of this research were to identify the state of the science for P transport and transformations, determine appropriate relationships for inclusion in GLEAMS, and determine if modifications to GLEAMS improved predictions of P loss in runoff, sediment, and leachate.
The state of the science review revealed numerous equations available to predict dissolved P loss in runoff and leachate from a soilâ s nutrient status. These equations use a single variable to predict P loss and were developed for site-specific conditions based on empirical data. Use of these equations in GLEAMS is not reasonable as transport factors must also be considered when predicting P loss.
Results from the sensitivity analysis showed that GLEAMS prediction of leached P were extremely sensitive to changes in the P partitioning coefficient (CPKD). Runoff PO4-P output was slightly to moderately sensitive, sediment PO4-P was moderately sensitive to sensitive, and sediment organic P was moderately sensitive to changes in CPKD whereas plant uptake of P was insensitive to slightly sensitive. The weakness of GLEAMS to estimate CPKD has been documented. Upon further investigation, it was determined that CPKD was highly over-estimated in GLEAMS as compared to measured values found during the literature review. Furthermore, this over-estimation caused under-estimation of the P extraction coefficient (BETA P); the value of BETA P remained constant at 0.10 and did not vary over the simulation period.
Expressions for CPKD and BETA P were modified in GLEAMS. Data from three published studies (Belle Mina, Gilbert Farm, and Watkinsville) were used in the analyses of three modifications to GLEAMS: GLEAMS BETA P, GLEAMS CPKD, and GLEAMS BETA P+CPKD. GLEAMS BETA P investigated the change in BETA P as a function of soil clay content, GLEAMS CPKD attempted to improve GLEAMSâ estimation of CPKD, and GLEAMS BETA P+CPKD assessed the combined effects of changes to BETA P and CPKD.
Over the respective study periods, GLEAMS over predicted runoff PO4-P for Belle Mina by 193 to 238% while under-predicting runoff PO4-P at Gilbert Farm by 41% and Watkinsville by 81%. Sediment P was over-predicted by GLEAMS for Belle Mina by 225 to 233% and Gilbert Farm by 560%, while sediment P was under-predicted by 62% at Watkinsville. Leached PO4-P was both over- and under-predicted by GLEAMS; Belle Mina was the only data set with observed leached P values.
Simulation results from the model changes were inconclusive. There was no clear evidence supporting use of one model over another. Modifications increased predicted dissolved P in runoff and leachate, while decreasing predicted sediment-bound P in runoff. The original GLEAMS model best predicted runoff and leached PO4-P at the Belle Mina sites. GLEAMS CPKD was the best predictor of runoff PO4-P and sediment P at Gilbert Farm. GLEAMS BETA P+CPKD best predicted runoff PO4-P at Watkinsville. Overall, the proposed improvements to GLEAMS did not improve GLEAMS predictions.
In conclusion, GLEAMS should not be used for quantitative estimates of hydrology, sediment, and nutrient loss for specific management practices. As recommended by the GLEAMS model developers, GLEAMS should only be used to predict relative differences in alternative management systems. It is recommended that future research focus on developing a better correlation between CPKD, clay mineralogy and content, and organic matter content, as CPKD has been identified as a vital component of the GLEAMS P sub-model that requires further examination.
