Abstract:
After the Waldock Report, OUP began a process of gradual modernization that resulted in changes to its systems of business administration and corporate structure. Manufacturing and in-house printing became less profitable and were eventually discontinued, and emphasis shifted to product marketing, international business, and corporate management. The Press maintained throughout this change its traditional learned values in academic and trade publishing and the Delegates continued to play a significant role in decision-making. By the 1990s OUP had reinvented itself as a modern publishing enterprise and was able to exploit new opportunities in digital publishing and the global book trade. The chapter considers in detail the process of modernization through an analysis of business structure, annual surpluses, and book sales, and the contribution of key individuals, while placing OUP in the context of the wider UK and international publishing world.

Full text
Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Corporate Social Responsibility is a review of the academic research that has both prompted, and responded to, the issues of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Business schools, the media, the corporate sector, governments, and non-governmental organizations have all begun to pay more attention to these issues in recent years. These issues encompass broad questions about the changing relationship between business, society and government, environmental issues, corporate governance, the social and ethical dimensions of management, globalization, stakeholder debates, shareholder and consumer activism, changing political systems and values, and the ways in which corporations can respond to new social imperatives. The book, which provides clear thinking and new perspectives on CSR and the debates around it, is divided into seven key sections: introduction; perspectives on CSR; critiques of CSR; actors and drivers; managing CSR; CSR in a global context; future perspectives and conclusions.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the financial markets and related legal and institutional frameworks in mainland China, in the context of China’s liberalization commitments under the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA). Today, Hong Kong and its financial markets perform a number of roles in respect to China. As part of the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong increasingly must deal directly with resulting issues and questions, both as a result of the increasing use by mainland companies of Hong Kong’s financial markets (e.g. listing on the stock exchange) as well as supporting business in China. At the same time, the resulting interconnection between the two economies and financial systems brings challenges for Hong Kong. This is especially true of questions relating to mainland companies raising money in Hong Kong and resulting issues of disclosure, corporate governance, and related enforcement problems.

Abstract:
To keep pace with the changing business environment as globalization permeates both consumer and labor markets, this handbook offers the most current research in the workplace diversity, exploring what diversity means and its impact on group and organizational functioning. The volume is comprised of eight sections. The first section provides a fundamental introduction and overview to the history and current state of workplace diversity. The second section explores various conceptualizations of diversity. The third section focuses on psychological perspectives on diversity, touching on the self in diverse work contexts, intergroup bias, and the experience of stigma. The fourth section deals with interactionist perspectives on diversity, including chapters on diversity as knowledge exchange, diversity as disagreement, and diversity as network connections. The fifth section provides contextual perspectives on diversity, e.g., how context shapes diversity outcomes, diversity cognition and climate, and viewing diversity as a competitive advantage. Sections six and seven consider practice perspectives and systems perspectives in diversity, touching on leadership, diversity training, work-life interface, and law and diversity. Finally, the book concludes with a chapter on future directions for diversity theory and research.

Bátiz-Lazo, Bernardo. Cash and Dash. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198782810.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Cash and Dash looks at the origins and development of the automated teller machine (ATM) as means to provide the unifying thread to explain changes in retail banking brought about by and around the introduction of computer technology. Main themes include an explanation of why technological change is slow in retail financial markets, and how different groups of people and organizations interact to shape a particular technology. Documentary evidence helps to clarify the myth of the single inventor and details the monumental task to deliver digital banking for retail consumers. Of particular importance for banks around the world throughout this task, was the need to balance new and unintended uses of a device by consumers as opposed to solving impending technical issues and gaining consumers’ trust, acceptance, and high usage. Research illuminates the progress of an industry-specific innovation becoming a novelty and how new payment devices embed in everyday life. The story in Cash and Dash also illustrates that serious ethical and political issues can emerge while adopting, making operational, and maintaining a particular technology within and around retail financial institutions. This approach contrasts with others that perceive technological change as external, neutral, and devoid of context and social setting. The book aims to keep the focus of the narrative off obsolescence and on maintenance and reinvention, while also allowing space to provide conceptual underpinnings and celebrating industry milestones. In short, Cash and Dash recounts a story of decisions about capital investments, business strategies, and technological evolution, and how these were followed by decisions dealing with legacy systems, personnel, standards, locations, and whether machines could become a source of competitive advantage in retail banking.
