Abstract:
✓ A deficiency of α1-antitrypsin has been implicated in the development of arterial aneurysms, including intracranial aneurysms. The authors determined the prevalence of α1-antitrypsin deficiency of different phenotypes in 100 consecutive patients with intracranial aneurysms and compared the distribution of α1-antitrypsin phenotypes to that in the general population (904 people). The study population consisted of 44 men and 56 women with a mean age of 52 years (range 15–81 years). The heterozygous α1-antitrypsin deficiency states (PiMS and PiMZ) were more common in patients (16%) than in the g

Abstract:
Summary Several diseases, including cancer and parasites, may be treated with medicinal plants. The purpose of this study was to examine in vitro the phytochemical profile, cytotoxic, and anthelmintic properties of Olea europaea stem and leaves methanolic extracts (OESME and OELME, respectively). Using FT-IR technology, phytochemical makeup was examined, and evaluation of antioxidant activity by ABTS and FRAP methods for plant extracts was examined. An MTT test was used to analyze the cytotoxicity of OESME and OELME against breast (MCF-7) and lung (A549) cell lines. The anthelmintic effect of

Abstract:
The objectives of this study were to produce complementary foods from locally available, underutilized and inexpensive food materials (breadfruit and soybean), to assess their nutrients value and evaluate their sensory acceptability. Breadfruit and soybean flours were mixed in ratios 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30 and 60:40 (w/w) respectively. Proximate and mineral compositions of the blends were determined using standard analytical methods; energy value was estimated using the Atwater factor. The blends were prepared for sensory evaluation by cooking with the addition of vegetable oil and sucrose

Abstract:
Abstract Background and Aims The retention of middle-molecules and Protein Bound Uraemic Toxins (PBUT) in dialysis patients are directly linked to specific clinical complications such as anaemia, inflammation and cardiovascular disease leading to increased mortality. These toxins, not adequately cleared by current dialysis techniques, could be removed by adsorption as demonstrated in numerous studies on dialysis patients. Furthermore, in dialysis patients there's an increased inflammation and oxidative stress only partially attenuated by biocompatibility of newly developed membraned. This path
