Vignoli, Daniele, Anna Matysiak, and Marta Styrc. "The positive impact of women's employment on divorce: Context, selection, or anticipation?" Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, 2018. http://epub.wu.ac.at/6218/1/38%2D37.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Empirical findings regarding the impact of women's employment on divorce are mixed. One explanation is that the effects are moderated by the country context. Another is that previous studies have failed to account for unobserved factors that introduce bias into the estimated effects. Studies also rarely consider possible anticipatory employment behavior on the part of women who are thinking of divorce. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to deepen our understanding of the nexus between women's employment and divorce in a comparative perspective. METHODS: We adopt an analytical strategy that allows us to account for selection and anticipation mechanisms. Namely, we estimate marital disruption and employment jointly, and monitor the timing of divorce after employment entry. This approach is implemented using micro-level data for Germany, Hungary, Italy, and Poland. RESULTS: We find that women's employment facilitates marital disruption in Italy and Poland, but not in Germany and Hungary. We also show that selection effects play out differently in different contexts. Finally, we notice traces of anticipatory behavior in Italy. CONTRIBUTION: We conclude that women's employment is less likely to be linked to divorce in countries with easier access to divorce and in countries with more generous financial support for families and single mothers, which in turn makes women less reliant on the market. With this study we hope to encourage future researchers to consider the potentially distorting effects of selection and anticipation strategies in (comparative) divorce research.

Kim, Dohyung. "A literary-critical analysis of the role of Genesis 38 within Genesis 37-50 as part of the primary narrative (Genesis - 2 Kings) of the Hebrew Bible." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2011. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14568/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis argues that the story of Judah and Tamar in Genesis 38 is to be read as the type narrative of the genealogical tensions within Genesis 37-50 and the Primary Narrative (Genesis- 2 Kings). Historical interpreters and literary critics have disagreed over whether this chapter is to be read as a disconnected episode or as a story integral to the surrounding narratives, often given the title 'the Joseph Story'. The argument here is that Genesis 38 does not simply belong to the socalled' Joseph Story' but is an essential partner to the surrounding chapters in the larger narrative running from Genesis to 2 Kings; the history of David's Judahite lineage. Genesis 38 indeed is about building Judah's and Tamar's family, which turns out to be at once Abraham's family and David's. From a narratological perspective, the main characters, Judah and Tamar, both play pivotal roles in this chapter and also in the wider story. Judah's character in Genesis 38 at a micro level represents him as the reluctant and despotic father of his family who is brought to accept his own failings. On the macro level, that is within Genesis 37-50, this transformation of Judah's character allows for his role to become that of family spokesman and leader of his brothers. While Joseph seems to be more powerful as the governor in Egypt, Judah ultimately has the more significant role as the deputy of Jacob's family in Canaan. Judah's character develops through the sequence 'Departure-Transition-Return'. In the end, Jacob's blessing of Judah (Gen. 49:8-12) is the most favourable he gives to any of his twelve sons. In retrospect, this creates for Judah the status of a fourth patriarch succeeding Jacob. As such, the argument is presented that the novella of Genesis 37-50 should not be labelled as it is traditionally 'the Joseph Story' or 'the Jacob Story'. Instead, it would be more accurate to call this unit The Story of Jacob and his Sons. Genesis 38 is situated in the novella as the epitome of the genealogical ambivalences that are the context for the whole Primary Narrative. Tamar, the sparring partner of her father-in-law Judah, shows a twofold role in her story in Genesis 38; she is both a matriarch within the Abrahamic lineage and at the same time the type of the marginal and widowed woman as mother in Israel. Surviving a period of trial as a childless widow, she finally succeeds in giving birth to the heirs of Judah by means of a plan that she herself devises. Tamar embodies all the key features of the role of the previous four matriarchs (Sarah, Rebekah, Leah and Rachel) and foreshadows the characteristics of women such as Ruth and Bathsheba who become the mothers of the Davidic line; they too are widows and marginal women within the Primary Narrative. Tamar can thus be presented as both the fifth matriarch. and also the representative of the later marginalised mothers of the Davidic line. Tamar is the crucial link. The characterisation of Judah and Tamar in Genesis 38 can be understood using the binary thematic-symmetrical structure and what I called the huckel-.lhajJed structure with its three themes: family building (+), shame (-) and deceit (-). These structures give this family a genealogical function which is typical in the Primary Narrative. Genesis 38, far from being some rather awkward insertion into the story of Joseph, is an integral part of ·the story of Jacob and his Sons'. Through the kind of genealogical twists which Genesis 38 epitomises, this wider story turns out, unexpectedly, not so much to be the story of Abraham's descendants, as the story of the Davidic line.

Abstract:

Orsenigo, Christian. "Les tombes KV 34, KV 35, KV 36, KV 37, KV 38 découvertes par Victor Loret dans la Vallée des Rois : « state of the art » à la lumière de nouveaux documents." Paris, EPHE, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013EPHE4004.

Abstract:
The dissertation focuses on five tombs discovered by Victor Loret during the excavation campaigns he conducted in the Valley of the Kings in 1898-1899: the KV 34 (Thutmose III), the KV 35 (Amenhotep II), the KV 36 (Maiherperi), the KV 37 (an anonymous tomb) and the KV 38 (Thutmose I). The study is mostly based on the documentation collected by Loret during his excavations in the Valley of the Kings. These papers, mainly belonging to the archives of the Università degli Studi di Milano, have been for a long time considered by Egyptologists lost if not non-existent. Each chapter opens with the account of the discovery and the phases of the excavation, followed by the description of the method adopted for the reconstruction of the funerary equipment. A catalogue of finds that reached the Egyptian Museum in Cairo closes each chapter. This catalogue results from researches conducted at the Museum in Cairo that permitted not only to identify almost all the objects mentioned by Loret in his notes, but also to complete or correct the information entered in the Journal d’Entrée and partially published in the Catalogue Général of the Museum. The study of the notes taken by Loret made possible the clear identification of most of the objects belonging to the funerary equipment as well as their findspot. At the same time it allowed to halt several speculations on the emplacement of the objects at the moment of their discovery. Moreover, some pages are devoted to the mummies discovered in KV 35, the “second royal cache”, especially referring to those whose family relationship with Tutankhamun seems today assured

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of a numerical study into the effects of aspect ratio on compressor rotor performance. The test cases studied are NASA rotors 37 and 38, which have aspect ratios of 1.19 and 1.63 respectively. A 3D, single-passage steady flow Navier-Stokes solver was used to predict complete performance characteristics, including the numerical instability point, for both rotors. The predictions are generally in good agreement with the test data (characteristics, radial profiles and rotor over tip measurements) at all conditions modelled for rotor 37. The performance for rotor 38 is overpredicted, with slightly less than half of the measured performance difference between the two rotors being captured. The effect of a pure aspect ratio change (divorced from the rotor inlet to exit area changes present in the rotor 37/38 comparisons) was also investigated, and a case with an aspect ratio double that of rotor 37 was also modelled. The results indicated that the code predicted little effect on rotor performance due to an aspect ratio change alone (from 1.19 to 2.38). This is surprising and it raises doubts about the ability of current codes (or at least the one used in the study) to predict this important aspect of a compressor design adequately.

Abstract:
A need exists to modernize undergraduate pilot training procedures and resources to better address the emergence of new fighter/attack bomber and transport aircraft such as the ATF, A-12, B-1, B-2, C-17 and ATT. The current U.S. training resources consist of the T-37/T-38 aircraft for the Air Force and the T-45, which will replace the T-2C and the TA-4J, in the U.S. Navy pilot training program. The T-37 and T-38 aircraft are of the 1950s-1960s vintage and do not have the flying qualities, sustained G and Mach capability, and cockpit technologies consistent with now-emerging fighter/attack aircraft. The disparity in aircraft agility between today’s (and tomorrow’s) front line aircraft and trainers is illustrated in Fig. 1.

Abstract:
GE contracted Kalsi Engineering, Inc. (KEI) to perform actuator testing to determine the effective diaphragm area for the Model 37/38 actuator line and to develop a bounding effective diaphragm area tolerance to account for measurement uncertainties and manufacturing tolerances. The GE sponsored test matrix includes Model 37/38 Sizes 9, 11, 13, 15, 18, and 24 actuators. The test matrix was primary defined to provide EDA data for actuators used in US nuclear power plants. The test matrix was primarily designed to facilitate the evaluation of the effects of stroke position, pressure, diaphragm materials, and measurement uncertainty. The test matrix also included with and without spring test configurations, two spring options for the same actuator size and model, and two diaphragm materials: Nitrile Elastomer and Silicone. The test program provides reliable data for AOV design basis evaluations as required by the NRC RIS 2000-03. This paper presents the results for the Masoneilan Model 38 Size 11 diaphragm actuator, which show that EDA is strongly position dependent and weakly pressure-dependent. As part of the project, a method for determining the required EDA tolerance to account for manufacturing variations was developed, which allows EDA determined by testing to be used across the product line. Abstract:
A dramatic change in the prognosis of TTP has taken place since the introduction of plasma therapy in 1977. However, plasma therapy does not always result in a complete cure since TTP manifestation may reappear. We describe 38 patients who were treated for TTP in 15 hospitals in Israel and New York City since 1977. 37 patients received plasma (transfusions and exchanges) and 30 survived. 12 patients (37%) developed relapsing TTP. Infections, pregnancy and surgery frequently preceded the initial episodes and the relapses. To evaluate the clinical course of relapsing TTP, a scoring system was developed based on 4 parameters: neurological findings, renal function impairment, platelet count and hemoglobin value at presentation. Each parameter was marked on a scale of 0 to 2: 0= no abnormality, 1= moderate impairment, 2= severe impairment. The severity of each episode was the sum of the 4 scores. The cases were divided into 3 groups: Group A= patients who died during 1st episode; Group B= patients who had only one episode; Group C= patients who relapsed. The following are the average severity scores:The differences between Groups A and B; A and C; B and C; and B and the relapses are significant (p<0.005)(Chi-square test). The differences between Group C first episode* and subsequent relapses are not significant (paired t-test). Hence, relapsing TTP was manifested by a milder clinical course, however two relapses were fatal, demonstrating that this is not a benign disorder. Therapy consisted of plasma, plasmapheresis, steroids, platelet-inhibitor drugs and 11 patients underwent splenectomy. Addition of vincristin seemd to shorten the duration of the TTP episode. No differences were observed in the treatment of Group A, B and C patients. However, during relapses, patients received less therapy probably due to their milder clinical course. Splenectomy did not prevent relapses, but prolonged the remission duration. Based on our data, we recommend that the severity score be used in determining the intensity of treatment.

Abstract:
Parameters of platelet volume have become widely available with the introduction of automated platelet counters. However, variant sample processing and in vitro platelet activation have prevented standardization of platelet volume analysis. We investigated the influence of anticoagulation, storage, temperature, and the presence or absence of RBC on platelet volume. Mean platelet volume (MPV) and the mode of the distribution were calculated from the platelet volume distribution curve recorded with the impedance method and plotted in 27 classes between 1.2 and 22 fl. The effects of EDTA (.335%), citrate (.38%), citrate (.38%)/glutaraldehyde (.125%) and a cocktail containing citrate, forskolin, indomethacin and theophyllin were determined 10, 30, 60, 120 and 240 min after blood collection. Tests were made at 4, 20° and 37°C in whole blood and platelet-rich plasma (PRP)from 6 healthy subjects. Platelet volume was strongly dependent on the anticoagulant in a time-dependent manner. MPV was lowest with citrate/glutaraldehyde and highest with EDTA. The maximum difference was 30% at 60 min both in whole blood and PRP. However, this was true only at 4 and 20°C. At 37°C, there was a constant rise in MPV using citrate/glutaraldehyde exceeding volume changes seen with the other anticoagulants. Platelet volume was higher in whole blood as compared to PRP. The difference was dependent on the anticoagulant used and the incubation time (1.8 fl for EDTA and 1.35 fl for citrate/glutaraldehyde, at 60 min). To determine the influence of platelet loss due to PRP preparation on this effect, we determined platelet volume in parallel from whole blood, PRP and the platelet population separated from whole blood by a linear Percoll gradient (n=5, recovery 94%). MPV was 7.6 fl in whole blood, 5.4 fl in PRP and 6.8 fl from the gradient (anticoagulant: citrate/glutaraldehyde). Platelet volume parameters highly depend on anticoagulation, incubation time and temperature. For clinical studies we recommend anticoagulation with citrate/glutaraldehyde and measurement within 2 hr at room temperature in whole blood.

Abstract:
In recent years, the application of nanomaterial has been attracting the oil and gas industry. Nanomaterials research results show an improving performance of cement, drilling fluid and enhanced oil recovery. In this paper, the effect of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and MWCNT functionalized with ligands–OH and - COOH nanoparticles on laboratory drilling fluids formulated from bentonite, KCL, Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and xanthan gum (XG) was studied. The formulations and tests were performed at room temperature. The results show that addition of 0.0095wt.% of MWCNT, MWCNT-OH and MWCNT-COOH nanoparticles in CMC/bentonite system decreases the filtrate-loss by 8.6 %, 7.1 % and 17.9 % respectively. These particles also decreased the coefficient of friction by 34 %, 37 % and 33 % respectively. In xanthan gum drilling fluid, 0.019wt%. MWCNT reduced the friction coefficient by 38 %.

Abstract:
Labour market in rural areas is diversified across Poland. Different processes have been influenced it during the last years. The study deals with spatial approach to sectoral structure of employment, including also characteristics for males and females. It was based on the data of the Central Statistical Office of Poland refereeing to the numbers of employees in three sectors: (a) agriculture, forestry and fishing like services; (b) industry and construction; (c) services. A new European Union typology of: predominantly rural, intermediate, and predominantly urban regions, based on a variation of the OECD methodology, was applied. Graphical presentation of the sectoral employment structures across NUTS 3 regions was used. Generally in Poland, very similar proportions of rural inhabitants work in agriculture, forestry and fishing like in the sector of services (third sector). In 2013, in predominantly rural regions, 37 % of inhabitants worked in agriculture, forestry and fishing (respectively 38 % of males, 37 % of females), 25 % of inhabitants worked in industry and construction (respectively 36 % of males, 15 % of females), and 37 % of inhabitants worked in services. Industry and construction is a sector important for employment of male rural inhabitants whereas services were typical for female employment. Agriculture, forestry and fishing is a very important sector of employment in the south-eastern part of Poland whereas the second and third sectors are more popular in the north-western part of Poland. Identification of these spatial patterns contributes to spatial characteristics of rural economies across Poland as well as it proves existence of a functional region, exceeding regional administrative boundaries, of high important of agriculture in the economy.
