Abstract:

BACKGROUND: Empirical findings regarding the impact of women's employment on divorce are mixed. One explanation is that the effects are moderated by the country context. Another is that previous studies have failed to account for unobserved factors that introduce bias into the estimated effects. Studies also rarely consider possible anticipatory employment behavior on the part of women who are thinking of divorce. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to deepen our understanding of the nexus between women's employment and divorce in a comparative perspective. METHODS: We adopt an analytical strategy that allows us to account for selection and anticipation mechanisms. Namely, we estimate marital disruption and employment jointly, and monitor the timing of divorce after employment entry. This approach is implemented using micro-level data for Germany, Hungary, Italy, and Poland. RESULTS: We find that women's employment facilitates marital disruption in Italy and Poland, but not in Germany and Hungary. We also show that selection effects play out differently in different contexts. Finally, we notice traces of anticipatory behavior in Italy. CONTRIBUTION: We conclude that women's employment is less likely to be linked to divorce in countries with easier access to divorce and in countries with more generous financial support for families and single mothers, which in turn makes women less reliant on the market. With this study we hope to encourage future researchers to consider the potentially distorting effects of selection and anticipation strategies in (comparative) divorce research.

Abstract:

The present thesis argues that the story of Judah and Tamar in Genesis 38 is to be read as the type narrative of the genealogical tensions within Genesis 37-50 and the Primary Narrative (Genesis- 2 Kings). Historical interpreters and literary critics have disagreed over whether this chapter is to be read as a disconnected episode or as a story integral to the surrounding narratives, often given the title 'the Joseph Story'. The argument here is that Genesis 38 does not simply belong to the socalled' Joseph Story' but is an essential partner to the surrounding chapters in the larger narrative running from Genesis to 2 Kings; the history of David's Judahite lineage. Genesis 38 indeed is about building Judah's and Tamar's family, which turns out to be at once Abraham's family and David's. From a narratological perspective, the main characters, Judah and Tamar, both play pivotal roles in this chapter and also in the wider story. Judah's character in Genesis 38 at a micro level represents him as the reluctant and despotic father of his family who is brought to accept his own failings. On the macro level, that is within Genesis 37-50, this transformation of Judah's character allows for his role to become that of family spokesman and leader of his brothers. While Joseph seems to be more powerful as the governor in Egypt, Judah ultimately has the more significant role as the deputy of Jacob's family in Canaan. Judah's character develops through the sequence 'Departure-Transition-Return'. In the end, Jacob's blessing of Judah (Gen. 49:8-12) is the most favourable he gives to any of his twelve sons. In retrospect, this creates for Judah the status of a fourth patriarch succeeding Jacob. As such, the argument is presented that the novella of Genesis 37-50 should not be labelled as it is traditionally 'the Joseph Story' or 'the Jacob Story'. Instead, it would be more accurate to call this unit The Story of Jacob and his Sons. Genesis 38 is situated in the novella as the epitome of the genealogical ambivalences that are the context for the whole Primary Narrative. Tamar, the sparring partner of her father-in-law Judah, shows a twofold role in her story in Genesis 38; she is both a matriarch within the Abrahamic lineage and at the same time the type of the marginal and widowed woman as mother in Israel. Surviving a period of trial as a childless widow, she finally succeeds in giving birth to the heirs of Judah by means of a plan that she herself devises. Tamar embodies all the key features of the role of the previous four matriarchs (Sarah, Rebekah, Leah and Rachel) and foreshadows the characteristics of women such as Ruth and Bathsheba who become the mothers of the Davidic line; they too are widows and marginal women within the Primary Narrative. Tamar can thus be presented as both the fifth matriarch. and also the representative of the later marginalised mothers of the Davidic line. Tamar is the crucial link. The characterisation of Judah and Tamar in Genesis 38 can be understood using the binary thematic-symmetrical structure and what I called the huckel-.lhajJed structure with its three themes: family building (+), shame (-) and deceit (-). These structures give this family a genealogical function which is typical in the Primary Narrative. Genesis 38, far from being some rather awkward insertion into the story of Joseph, is an integral part of ·the story of Jacob and his Sons'. Through the kind of genealogical twists which Genesis 38 epitomises, this wider story turns out, unexpectedly, not so much to be the story of Abraham's descendants, as the story of the Davidic line.

Abstract:

Le développement de l'oeil, comme de tout autre organe, fait appel à plusieurs événements: des inductions entre tissus par l'intermédiaire de facteurs diffusibles et des interactions cellulaires, conduisant à la mise en place d'une combinatoire spécifique de facteurs de transcription. OTX2 est une protéine à homéodomaine exprimée dans la rétine pigmentaire puis dans la neurorétine. Nous avons montré qu'OTX2 peut transdifférencier des celules de neurorétine en cellules pigmentées in vitro et qu'il peut activer des gènes de la pigmentation, tout comme MITF, facteur à domaine bHLHLZ et acteur majeur de la différenciation pigmentaire. Nous avons observé que ces deux facteurs interagissent physiquement et peuvent entrer en synergie pour activer la pigmentation. Nous avons aussi étudié la régulation de l'expression de PAX6, un gène maître du développement de l'oeil qui code une protéine à homéodomaine et domaine paired. Nous avons analysé le rôle des facteurs de transcription MAF, protéines à domaine bLZ, dans le contrôle transcriptionnel de PAX6. Nous avons montré. Que les membres de la famille MAF peuvent réguler différemment l'expression de PAX6 in vitro, en fonction des éléments régulateurs considérés (promoteurs ou enhancers). De plus, MAF pourrait interagir avec OTX2 pour un contrôle fin de l'expression de PAX6.

Abstract:

La thèse est consacrée à cinq tombes découvertes par Victor Loret lors de ses travaux dans la Vallée des Rois en 1898-1899. Il s’agit de la KV 34 (Thoutmosis III), la KV 35 (Aménophis II), la KV 36 (Maiherperi), la KV 37 (une tombe anonyme) et la KV 38 (Thoutmosis Ier). Le travail s’appuie largement sur la documentation recueillie par Loret pendant ses campagnes de fouilles. Ces notes sont contenues principalement dans des documents conservés à l’Università degli Studi di Milano que les égyptologues avaient considérées longtemps pour perdues, sinon inexistantes. Chaque chapitre comporte le récit de la découverte, la description de la fouille, la méthode utilisée pour la reconstitution de l'équipement funéraire et un catalogue du mobilier parvenu au Musée égyptien du Caire. Ce catalogue se base sur des recherches menées au Musée du Caire, qui ont permis de retrouver pratiquement tous les objets mentionnés par Loret dans ses cahiers, ainsi que d’intégrer ou, souvent de corriger, les données du Journal d'Entrée et du Catalogue Général du Musée. L’étude des notes rédigées par Loret a permis d’indiquer avec précision la constitution d’ensemble du mobilier des tombes traitées et en même temps a permis de mettre fin à plusieurs spéculations sur la disposition des objets au moment de leur découverte. Dans le cas de la KV 35, la « deuxième cachette royale », on a fait le point sur les momies découvertes et tout particulièrement sur l’identification des trois dont le lien de parenté avec Toutânkhamon semble désormais assuré
The dissertation focuses on five tombs discovered by Victor Loret during the excavation campaigns he conducted in the Valley of the Kings in 1898-1899: the KV 34 (Thutmose III), the KV 35 (Amenhotep II), the KV 36 (Maiherperi), the KV 37 (an anonymous tomb) and the KV 38 (Thutmose I). The study is mostly based on the documentation collected by Loret during his excavations in the Valley of the Kings. These papers, mainly belonging to the archives of the Università degli Studi di Milano, have been for a long time considered by Egyptologists lost if not non-existent. Each chapter opens with the account of the discovery and the phases of the excavation, followed by the description of the method adopted for the reconstruction of the funerary equipment. A catalogue of finds that reached the Egyptian Museum in Cairo closes each chapter. This catalogue results from researches conducted at the Museum in Cairo that permitted not only to identify almost all the objects mentioned by Loret in his notes, but also to complete or correct the information entered in the Journal d’Entrée and partially published in the Catalogue Général of the Museum. The study of the notes taken by Loret made possible the clear identification of most of the objects belonging to the funerary equipment as well as their findspot. At the same time it allowed to halt several speculations on the emplacement of the objects at the moment of their discovery. Moreover, some pages are devoted to the mummies discovered in KV 35, the “second royal cache”, especially referring to those whose family relationship with Tutankhamun seems today assured

Die Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der gekoppelten Simulation von Klimaanlage, Regelung und Gebäude mit Hilfe des Simulationssystems TRNSYS. Während für das Gebäude ein vorhandenes TRNSYS Modul verwendet wird, wurden für Klimaanlage und Regelung neue Simulationsmodule entwickelt. Der Klimaanlagensimulator ist seinerseits modular aufgebaut enthält sowohl geometrisch physikalische und empirische als auch kombinierte Modelle für die Simulation von Ventilatoren, Lufterhitzern, Feuchtluftkühlern, Befeuchtern, Regeneratoren, Plattenwärmeüberträgern, Kreislaufwärmerückgewinnern, Ventilen, hydraulischen Schaltungen usw., die für die Simulation sehr variabel miteinander verschaltet werden können. Es wurden optimierte Regelstrategien für konventionelle und DEC-Anlagen entwickelt und entsprechende TRNSYS-Module zur Umsetzung in die Simulation programmiert. Für die Sequenzregelung mehrerer Größen (z.B. Temperatur, Feuchte) wurde ein frei programmierbarer Mehrsequenzregler entwickelt, der den scheinbaren Reglerstillstand über Verknüpfungen blockierter Stellglieder einer Regelsequenz verhindert. Die Qualität der Regelsequenzen wurde mit Hilfe eines über das Rosenbrockverfahren und der dynamischen Optimierung ermittelten optimalen Vergleichsprozesses bewertet.
