Abstract:
Abstract:
Enzymes are important in reducing both energy consumption and combating environmental pollution. Proteases are enzymes which catalyze the hydrolysis of protein molecules. Most of the tannery industries in Ethiopia use chemicals for dehairing that led great environmental and human health problem. The objectives of the present study were,to isolate potential protease producing bacteria from water sample collected from traditional leather processing waste water around Wukro maray;to extract the protease enzyme through SSF using cheap wheat bran, and evaluate the potential activity of the enzyme in leather dehairing. Water samples were serially diluted and 1ml of sample was spread on nutrient agar and kept at 370C for 24 hrs. Many colonies of bacteria were formed. The colony from C10-4 and G10-3 were taken by using inoculating loop for sub culturing to get pure colony. Then the pure cultured colony were inoculated into the 250 ml Erlenmeyer flasks containing substrate were fermented after 6 days incubation at 370C. The results of the unknown concentration of the crude protease enzyme showed successfully used as dehairing agent on hide. The results indicate that these bacteria isolate can be used as biotechnological tool for industrial purpose.

Abstract:
At Republic 370c–372d, Plato presents us with an early polis that is self-sufficient, peaceful, cooperative, and which provides a comfortable life for its inhabitants. While Glaucon derides this polis as a ‘city for pigs’, Socrates is quick to defend its virtues characterizing it as a city which is not only ‘complete’ (telea), but a ‘true’ (alêthinê polis) and ‘healthy’ city (hugiês tis) (371e–372e). Is Plato sincere when he lauds the city of pigs? if so, why does the city of pigs degenerate so precipitously into the luxurious city (truphôsa polis)? Some commentators have been unable to find any place for the ‘city of pigs’ in the substantive argument of the Republic. Other commentators have supposed that the source of instability in the city of pigs is the nature of human desire. I argue that these interpretations miss what is most deeply interesting about the city of pigs. On my reading, the city of pigs is healthy and true in that it is a unified community. However, this unity depends on good fortune, is highly contingent, and thus unstable.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper aims at finding the effect of co-digestion of cow dung and food waste on total biogas yield. Biogas production was improved through co-digestion of cow dung and food waste (FW) containing a small fraction of inoculum under mesophilic temperature (37ºC) over a retention time of 24 days. Co-digestion ratios of 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 for cowdung/foodwaste were used for the study on anaerobic digestion on the co digested matter. Tests were carried out starting with the preparation of substrates, substrate characterization to determine the moisture content (MC), total solids (TS), volatile solids (VS) and ultimately batch anaerobic digestion experiments under thermophilic conditions (370C). The moisture content, volatile solids and total solids for food waste were 78, 22 and 90.7% respectively while the characteristics for cow dung were 67.2, 32.8 and 96.0 % respectively. From the study, a mixing ratio of cow dung: food waste of 1:2 was found to be the optimum substrate mixture for biogas production at 25595.7 Nml. The accumulated gas volumes of 18756.6, 14042.5, 13940.8 and 13839.1 Nml were recorded for cow dung: food waste ratios of 2:1, 1:1, 1:3 and 3:1 respectively. For a co-digestion containing more of the food waste than cow dung, a higher volume of biogas is produce.

Abstract:
Background: Spirulina has several effects in the metabolism of the body. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to see the ability of extracts of spirulina for the removal of arsenic from isolated liver tissues of rat. Methodology: This animal study was carried out on isolated liver tissues of Long Evans Norwegian adult healthy male rats weighing 160 to 200 g. The rats were 3 to 6 months of age obtained from animal house of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, Bangladesh from 2004 to 2005. Measurements and all tasks were performed in a very careful manner. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer with Hydride Generator was used to measure the arsenic level. A set of freshly washed test tubes was taken. All test tubes contained 2ml tyrode solution and twenty small pieces of liver tissue maintaining 00C. No arsenic was added in test tube I. 2.5 μg/ml arsenic trioxide was added rest of the test tubes. They all were incubated for 45 minutes at 370C. Then the tissues were washed properly. The extracts of spirulina was added at 20 μl/ml dose. Second incubation was also for another 45 minutes at 370C. There were duplicates of all test tubes. Result: The effects of different extracts of spirulina (E1, E2, E4 and E7) on the removal of arsenic from arsenic loaded tissue were recorded. Amount of accumulated arsenic (mean ± se) in blank was 6.04 ± 3.05 μg/g of protein. After administration of 2.5 μg/ml arsenic trioxide in both incubation, the amount of accumulated arsenic was 245.02 ± 22.37 μg/g of protein. Blank was deducted from the standard and the value was considered as control and it was 238.96 ± 19.32 μg / g of protein. The arsenic loaded tissues were incubated with different extracts (E1, E2, E4 and E7) of spirulina in second incubation for another 45 minutes at 370C and each extract was for 20 μl / ml. After E1 extract of spirulina in second incubation, amount of accumulated arsenic was 136.40 ± 14.23 μg / g. There was 14.81% of removal of arsenic. Second incubation with E2 extract of spirulina (20 μl/ml) on arsenic loaded (2.5 μg/ml) tissue showed the amount of arsenic 242.56 ± 16.50 μg/g of protein (mean ± se). There was 12.59% of removal of arsenic. Conclusion: In conclusion extracts of spirulina has a significant ability to remove arsenic from isolated liver tissues of experimental rat. Smith, Thomas Aneurin. "At the crux of development? : local knowledge, participation, empowerment and environmental education in Tanzania." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3700/.

Full text
Abstract:
Development appears to have gone through a paradigm shift, from top-down, state-led projects to bottom-up, participatory schemes which seek to take account of local knowledges. Tanzania is a country which, like many others in the ‘Global South’, faces a myriad of interlinked environmental and development problems, particularly as much of the population’s livelihood needs are deeply entwined with local environmental resources. Current environmental policies and conservation practise in Tanzania appear to reflect this new shift in development, and increasingly the Tanzanian state and a number of NGOs have aimed to increase the participation of local people in environmentally sustainable practices. Education about the environment, for both adults and young people, has become key to this approach in Tanzania since the 1990s. This thesis aims to explore the many practical and theoretical questions which remain about the suitability of participatory projects that utilise local knowledges, considering questions which are fundamentally at the heart of how development is and how it should be done, questions which are ultimately at the crux of development itself. Specifically, I aim to answer questions about how participants and communities can become ‘empowered’ through participatory initiatives, and to this end I investigate the important yet presently neglected role of young people. I further explore the nature of ‘local knowledge’, questioning its current use in development projects whilst seeking to re-conceptualise and re-orientate how ‘local knowledge’ is understood and employed. I utilise a qualitative and participatory methodology through three communities in Tanzania, each of which offers a contrasting picture of environmental issues throughout the country. I begin by exploring the current understandings of participation and local knowledges in development, and follow with an explanation of the methodological approach. The empirical chapters are then organised around three main themes: local knowledges, environmental education in Tanzania, and the role of participation in Tanzanian communities. The first of these chapters appraises the concept of ‘local knowledge’ critically by first comparing local and official discourses of the ‘environment’, assessing how far an attention to local knowledges has percolated into official environmental discourses in Tanzania. In light of local understandings of the environment encountered in these three communities, I consider how the current conceptual framework of local knowledge may be limiting our understanding of how these knowledges are constructed and communicated. The second empirical chapter examines environmental education projects in Tanzania, and from this I critically reflect on the role of NGOs and the state in local development. Through an analysis of environmental education, I consider how both local knowledge and participation agendas can be spatialised, in particular by understanding how formal and informal spaces of learning are constructed discursively in communities, and the implications this has for the outcomes of education projects. I go on to examine the notions of participation and community, exploring how participation and inclusion operate at different scales, including those beyond the local. I consider how the current conceptualisation of participation and community, derived from ‘Western’ ideals, can conflict with local understandings of responsibility, volunteerism, participation and community development. Through this, I question the ‘community’ as the necessary site of empowerment, and in particular here I draw attention to the role of young people and how their identities are reproduced at the community scale and beyond. Finally, I conclude by discussing the conceptual and practical application of local knowledge and participation in development in light of this critical appraisal. I consider the role of formal education more broadly in empowering young people, and I question the role of NGOs in the future of locally and nationally orientated development. I end with an examination of the ethics of the current development paradigm in light of the understandings of development uncovered by this study, many of which fundamentally challenge the way that participatory forms of development should be done.

Pollock, Kevin. "An examination of Scotland’s strategic coordinating groups to determine whether they are capable of delivering resilience and enhanced crisis management capabilities." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3702/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines whether the introduction of the Civil Contingencies Act 2004 and the establishment of Strategic Coordinating Groups (SCGs) within an integrated emergency management framework provides Scotland with an effective crisis response structure and resilience. A key aspect of resilience is the ability of the SCGs to learn from previous experiences. This research will consider the organisational learning of the SCGs to determine whether it is as effective as it could be. It first focuses on the organisational structure of the SCG and analyses it in terms of network management to determine its crisis management effectiveness. It then considers whether the SCGs are suitably adaptive to crises and learn from the experience of managing them and thereby enhance their preventative capability, as envisaged by the resilience policy. The principal argument is that the current structure does not ensure effective organisational learning and therefore Scotland’s resilience is diminished. Design/Methodology/Approach A qualitative approach is used. Data is gathered through interviews and non-participant observations, and interpreted by a combination of inductive and deductive approaches. The use of triangulation of data enhances its validity. Systems theory provides analytical frameworks to examine the SCG structure and processes, and to determine whether SCGs successfully achieve the desired outcome of resilience and effective crisis management. Findings/Practical Implications Using the systems approach identifies that real world SCGs have a number of variances from the ideal state. The current SCG structure is complex which makes communication and coordination challenging, which undermines the SCG crisis response. The absence of a dynamic monitoring mechanism within the SCG makes it difficult to learn lessons from previous crises and adapt to environmental changes. The thesis concludes by making a number of recommendations for improving SCG crisis management effectiveness and resilience.

Murdoch, Christina. "'A large and passionate humanity plays about her' : women and moral agency in the late Victorian social problem novel." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3703/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines responses to the idea of a specific female moral agency in depictions of women’s philanthropic work by late nineteenthcentury female novelists. Focusing on depictions of romantic and sexual female experience in the late nineteenth-century campaign against poverty, I explore the role of gender and sexuality in the making of the female moral self in novels by Mrs. Humphry Ward, Iota, Margaret Harkness, Jane Hume Clapperton, Gertrude Dix. I demonstrate the manner in which altruism was linked to romantic love and sexual desire, and show how this idea surfaced in the love-plot in novels by late nineteenth-century women. I argue that the novel was regarded as a valuable instrument to further the process of social reform, owing to its perceived unique ability to arouse the reader’s sympathies; therefore, these novelists used the novel as a tool for constructing the altruistic self. Reading the novels alongside contemporary non-fiction discourse, I undertake an analysis of different romance plots and show how they relate to the debates of the social reform movement of the late nineteenth century. Finally, I suggest that by using the novel, and especially the romance plot, which was regarded as a feminine form of expression, these novelists are defending the idea of a feminine ethic, and a feminine conception of morality that was defined by emotion, feeling, and sympathy, as opposed to the more masculine scientific and sociological ideas behind the late nineteenth century social reform movement.

Runciman, Carin Ferris. "Mobilisation and insurgent citizenship of the Anti-Privatisation Forum, South Africa : an ethnographic study." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3706/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the mobilisation practices of one of the largest social movement organisations to have emerged in post-apartheid South Africa, the Anti-Privatisation Forum (APF). Making a contribution to the growing field of scholarship on the global justice movement, this thesis presents an analysis of the micro-levels of mobilisation in order to provide a deeper understanding of the everyday forms of resistance articulated and enacted by the APF and its affiliated community-based organisations. Locating itself within the political process paradigm as developed by Doug McAdam (1982, 1996), Sidney Tarrow (1988, 1994, 1998) and Charles Tilly (1978, 2008), the study of micro-processes of mobilisation is advanced through an analysis of the interaction between mobilising structures, political opportunities and framing, in order to tease out the internal political, strategic and organisational differences within the APF. I propose that the APF and its affiliates should be conceptualised as a ‘social movement community’, arguing that such a conceptualisation places a critical focus on the significance of political scale, the importance of space and place as well as a consideration of the political, social and cultural aspects of collective action. By combining perspectives from social movement theory with a Gramscian perspective on resistance and counter-hegemony, this thesis presents an empirically and theoretically grounded analysis of the conditions which both facilitate and constrain the emergence and practice of transformative collective action. With a close focus upon the internal practices of mobilisation, the analysis presented contributes to a flourishing field of scholarship which analyses social movements as alternative public spaces in which individuals contest dominant practices of citizenship and democracy and forge potentially counter-hegemonic relations. Utilising James Holston’s (1998, 2008, 2009) concept of ‘insurgent citizenship’ this thesis examines the paradoxes of the post-apartheid democratic settlement, where the constitutional rights which have been extended to all sections of the polity have been undermined by neoliberal policies which have resulted in the privatisation of basic services and reshaped relations between the citizen and the state. Furthermore, as I will demonstrate, the quality and experience of democracy post-apartheid has also been undermined by increasing violence and inefficiencies within the justice system. This thesis argues that social movements provide important spaces for the alternative practice of citizenship and democracy in which socio-economically marginalised groups seek not only to be accommodated within the polity but also challenge the economic, political and social foundations upon which the polity is built. However, while social movements may offer progressive challenges to hegemonic relations through the course of collective action it is also possible that some forms of inequalities will become further entrenched. Thus, the analysis which follows offers a critical account of the insurgent citizenship practices of the APF which considers how some forms of inequalities, particularly in relation to gender, may become entrenched through the processes of mobilisation.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is an analytical study of the structure and activities of the International Transport Workers' Federation(ITF) from 1945 to 1965.It gives particular attention to the nature of the ITF's memberships, especially its expansion to the United States and to the Third World; to the ITF's political stance in a period of enormous international tension and to the interrelationship of both those factors. The ITF was founded in 1896 and there are few substantial transport workers' unions which are not yet affiliated. It has long been recognized as the most effective of all the international trade union organizations. The ITF made a significant contribution to the Allied war effort in the Second World War and its membership in every branch of the international transport industry took on great strategic importance during the Cold War. The thesis is based on original research, making special use of the ITF's extensive archives at the Modern Records Centre of the University of Warwick. There is a close and critical focus on the ITFs political engagement, exemplified by its controversial part in countering communist influence in European ports in the early 1950s at the time of the introduction of the European Recovery Programme (the Marshall Plan). This discussion is, however, set in the context of the ITF's structures and its broader social and industrial concerns, such as the defence of trade union and civil rights and assistance to transport workers' unions in the newly de-colonized developing countries. The conclusions draw out the main findings of the research and discuss the dearth of academic literature on the international trade union movement, and especially the almost total neglect of 'International Trade Secretariats', organizations such as the ITF which group together national trade unions in specific industries and services. On this basis, it surveys a poorly served theoretical field and outlines implications for future theoretical analysis.

Conlon, William M., Pete Johnson, and Robert Hanson. "Superheated Steam From CLFR Solar Steam Generators." In ASME 2011 Power Conference collocated with JSME ICOPE 2011. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/power2011-55174.

Full text
Abstract:
AREVA Solar has designed, constructed and demonstrated the first successful Once Through Solar Steam Generator (SSG) to deliver superheated steam without intermediate heat transfer fluids. Deployed at the Kimberlina Solar Thermal Power Station, SSG4 represents the state of the art for solar steam production, for stand-alone power generation and augmentation of fossil fueled steam cycles. The ASME Section I boiler was designed, constructed, stamped and commissioned during 2010, and includes a novel Model Predictive Control system capable of maintaining any two of three steam conditions (flow, pressure, temperature) under varying solar input. During field trials in September 2010, exit steam conditions were maintained at 60 +/− 3 bar and 370 +/− 20C during steady and transient conditions, while steam flow consistently exceeded predictions. In a “lights-out” test, simulating complete instantaneous cloud cover, SSG4 had sufficient thermal inertia to supply more than 18 minutes of superheated steam. AREVA Solar’s SSGs incorporate a 400m long tube bundle within an elevated insulated cavity receiver, onto which sunlight is concentrated by reflectors. The multi-pass tube bundle arranges superheater tubes in the high flux regions, and economizer/evaporator tubes in lower flux regions. This assures sufficient heat flux to sustain superheated steam temperatures throughout the operating day, and also reduces the average bundle temperature to reduce radiant heat losses. Boiler tubes were prepared in AREVA Solar’s factory to improve their absorption of solar energy and reduce radiant heat losses. The inverted cavity maintains a stagnant air layer between the tube bundle and a glass cover below the boiler tube supports, to reduce convective heat loss. SSG4 was designed for a Maximum Allowable Working Pressure of 105 bara, and a Maximum Mean Wall Temperature of 482C in the superheater section. AREVA Solar is the first Concentrated Solar Power provider with an ASME “S” Stamp and National Board authorization. Following the initial trials at 370C, the SSG is expected to operate at 450C superheated steam temperature. This paper describes the design, construction, commissioning, and testing of the Compact Linear Fresnel Reflector (CLFR) SSG4.

Maryska, Milos, Petr Doucek, and Lea Nedomova. "Comparison of Applicant's Results for Studies from Russia and Vietnam at the University of Economics, Prague." In InSITE 2017: Informing Science + IT Education Conferences: Vietnam. Informing Science Institute, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/3708.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: The aim of this paper is analysis of applicants for study at the University of Economics, Prague (UEP) that are coming from foreign countries. The second aim is to learn the graduation rate of foreign students. Background: Knowledge about applicants results are important for changing entrance exams according to the changing situation in high school education systems and according to the changing requirements coming from teachers at UEP. The background question is, if the both components of entrance exams should have the same significance. Methodology: Entrance exams results were analysed for 2009-2016 period. We used standard statistics methods supported by the IBM SPSS tool and Microsoft Excel. All data were processed by way of Microsoft SQL Server. We analyzed the faculties that require Mathematics and English entrance exams. We are comparing mainly results of applicants from Russia and Vietnam. For graduation rate estimations the logit model approach has been applied. The data for our analysis came from UEP information systems and hard-copy applications and were then set anonymous. Contribution: Detailed analysis of situation at the UEP and guideline on how to process similar research at another universities. Paper offers comparison of Russian education system results in Mathematics and English with the education system of Vietnam. Further contribution is for Vietnamese potential applicants for study in the Czech Republic. Findings: Based on our analysis, we concluded that total number of applicants for studies was 109,996 students at the UEP during the analyzed period and applicants from Vietnam 1,686 and from Russia 7,227. For studies were accepted 717 applicants from Vietnam (42.5%) and 1,986 applicants from Russia (27.5%). We were also able to prove a slightly positive correlation between the number of points obtained for the English entrance exam and the mathematics entrance exam. However, this correlation goes slightly downhill over time. Further findings are from logit model of correlation between number of obtained points and successfully studies completion. The border for effective acceptance of students from this data set is approximately 170 obtained points in entrance exam. Recommendations for Practitioners : This analysis offers results of entrance exams on UEP from English and Mathematics. Recommendation could be held in comparison of education systems efficiency in Russia and Vietnam in these two areas with reflection requirements on students of economy at University of Economics, Prague. Recommendation for Researchers: The way of analysis, number of analyzed sample, final data and conclusions from this research. Using logit model for study success rate modeling. Offer for cooperation in analysis of entrance exams data queues. Impact on Society: Comparison of entrance exams results on University of Economics, Prague between Russian and Vietnamese applicants for study in the area of economics. Comparison of education systems effectiveness in Vietnam and in Russia in relation to economics studies in EU country. Future Research: Process this analysis in longer period and extend for another countries and nationalities. Next step planned for this is year is analysis of relation among results of Mock Entrance Exams – Entrance Exams – Study Results. This is long-term plan. In next 5 years, we should be able to answer question if there is some probability, that students failed during standard entrance exams when these students pass mock exams for example because he was in stress?

Abstract:
[This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology] Aim/Purpose: This study was designed to examine the effectiveness of mentor’s work with immigrant children and adolescents at risk, using the Elements Way. Background: The New Media offers our “screen kids” a lot of information, many behavioral models, and a new type of social communication. The Elements Way is an educational method designed to enhance openness, development, breakthroughs, goal achievement, and transformation in the age of media and social networks. Methodology: The Elements Way was developed following research on communication in the diversified media, especially new media such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and television reality shows, and the study is an examination of the effectiveness of mentors’ work with immigrant children and adolescents at risk, using the Elements Way. All mentors had been trained in the Elements Way. The study population included 640 mentors working with immigrants’ children in Israel. The work was conducted in 2010-2013. The mixed-methods approach was selected to validate findings. Contribution: Empowering children and enhancing their ability to cope; Creating openness and sharing, making children more attentive to the significant adults in their lives; Supporting children who face the complex reality that characterizes our age. Findings: Significant differences were found in the mentors’ conduct with the children. Work programs were designed and implemented with care and consistency, and mentors succeeded in generating change within the children and achieving desired goals. Of the 640 participating mentors, 62 were not able to promote the child, and interviews with them revealed that their work with the children was not consistent with the Elements Way and began from a different vantage point. Recommendations for Practitioners: Success factors: Self-awareness and awareness of one’s surroundings. Empathy. Willingness to engage in significant interactions. Self-cleansing and self-reflection. Ability to engage in a personal and interpersonal dialogue. Ability to accept and contain the child. Cooperation with the child in creating a work program and assisting the child to achieve the goals that were set in the program. Recommendation for Researchers: Future studies should focus on analyzing the discussions of children and adolescents, to add depth to our insights regarding children and adolescents’ perception of the mentors’ work from their perspective. Impact on Society: Finding the “keys” to openness, development, goal achievement, and transformation in our work with “screen kids.” Future Research: Studies that are designed to examine the effectiveness of mentor’s work with immigrant children and adolescents at risk, using the Elements Way.
