The pKa values for the deprotonation of a series of 4-(X-phenylsulfonylmethyl)pyridines (6) (pKa = 19.89 (X = H); ρ = 3.0) were determined in aqueous dimethyl sulfoxide solutions at 25 °C using the H0q acidity function. The pKa values were also measured for the corresponding series of N-mefhyl 4-(X-phenylsulfonylmethyl)pyridinium cations (2) (pKa = 11.27 (X = H); ρ = 1.45) and also for a series of N-(X-benzyl) 4-phenylsulfonylmethylpyridinium cations (7) (pKa = 10.70 (X = H); ρ = 0.65) in aqueous solution (ionic strength 0.1 at 25 °C). CD28 plays a critical role in T cell immune responses. Although the kinase Akt has been shown to act downstream of CD28 in T helper (Th)1 cytokine induction, it does not induce Th2 cytokines such as interleukin 4 (IL-4). We recently reported that phosphoinositide-dependent kinase 1 (PDK1) partially corrects the defect in IL-4 production present in CD28-deficient T cells, suggesting that PDK1 regulates IL-4 independently of Akt. We now describe a signaling pathway in which PDK1 targets IL-4 in the murine Th2 cell line D10. PDK1-mediated activation of this pathway is dependent on protein kinase

Irregular sickle red blood cells (RBCs) can contribute to the pathogenesis of vasoocclusion and other complications of sickle cell disease (SCD) via abnormal adherence to the vascular endothelium. It has previously been demonstrated that epinephrine enhances SCD RBC adhesion by activating the BCAM/Lu and ICAM-4 surface receptors [1–2]. Epinephrine acts on the RBC β2-adrenergic receptor, thereby activating Gas proteins that stimulate adenylyl cyclase (AC). This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), leading to protein kinase A (

Abstract:
Abstract Zirconolite (CaZrTi2O7) has been proposed as a crystalline ceramic host for the long-term disposal of actinides extracted from high-level nuclear waste (e.g. France) and from excess weapons-grade plutonium (e.g. USA). The disintegration of radionuclides induces modifications of the crystalline structure. During α-decay of actinides, localized cascades of displaced atoms occur primarily because of ballistic collisions in the material from the emitted α-recoil nuclei. Under α-decay irradiation, zirconolite undergoes a crystalline to amorphous transformation, which is associated to a vol

PCA-4230 (3-{2-(N-l,2-benzisothiazolyl-3(2H)one-1,1-dioxide) ethoxycarbonyl}-2,6-dimethyl-5-ethoxycarbonyl-4-methyl-l,4-dihy-dropyridine) is a new synthetic compound which has been selected after evaluation of .several series of molecules included in an ex tensive program of synthesis and biological screening. The purpose of this study was to investigate the In vUjiO effects of PCA-4230 on human platelet function.Platelet aggregation (PA) was measured, in platelet rich plasma (PRP) or washed platelets, according to Born’s technique. Release reaction (RR) was measured by the luminiscence method

Abstract:
Cells of the monocyte/macrophage series develop thromboplastin procoagulant activity (PCA) when activated. This activity may be enhanced by T lymphocytes, but there have been few studies of the PCA of T lymphocytes themselves. In the present study, we have measured the PCA of four T lymphoma cell lines (JURKAT, CEM, HSB2 and MQLT4) as well as normal peripheral blood T lymphocytes, before and after stimulation with phyto-haemag-glutinin (PHA), using clotting and amidolytic methods.Of the four cell lines only one, JURKAT, gave enhanced PCA. after stimulation with PHA., with recalcification times

Abstract:
t-PA and scu-PA, in molar ratios between 1:4 and 4:1 do not act synergically in vitro (Thromb. Haemost. 56,35,1986) but display marked synergism in a rabbit model (Circulation 74, 838, 1986) and in man (Am. Heart J. 112, 1083, 1986). To investigate the mechanism of in vivo synergism in the rabbit model (J. Clin. Invest. 71, 368, 1983), t-PA and scu-PA were infused 1) simultaneously over 4 hrs, 2) t-PA over 1 hr, then 15 min later scu-PA over 2 hrs and 3) scu-PA over 1 hr, then 15 min later t-PA over 2 hrs.Significant synergism on thrombolysis is observed when t-PA and scu-PA are infused simult
