Abstract:
Purpose: Signal typing has been used to categorize healthy and disordered voices; however, human voices are likely comprised of differing proportions of periodic type 1 elements, type 2 elements that are periodic with modulations, aperiodic type 3 elements, and stochastic type 4 elements. A novel diffusive chaos method is presented to detect the distribution of voice types within a signal with the goal of providing an objective and clinically useful tool for evaluating the voice. It was predicted that continuous calculation of the diffusive chaos parameter throughout the voice sample would allow for construction of comprehensive voice type component profiles (VTCP). Methods: One hundred thirty-five voice samples of sustained /a/ vowels were randomly selected from the Disordered Voice Database Model 4337. All samples were classified according to the voice type paradigm using spectrogram analysis, yielding 34 type 1, 35 type 2, 42 type 3, and 24 type 4 voice samples. All samples were then analyzed using the diffusive chaos method, and VTCPs were generated to show the distribution of the 4 voice type components (VTC). Results: The proportions of VTC1 varied significantly between the majority of the traditional voice types ( P < .001). Three of the 4 VTCs of type 3 voices were significantly different from the VTCs of type 4 voices ( P < .001). These results were compared to calculations of spectrum convergence ratio, which did not vary significantly between voice types 1 and 2 or 2 and 3. Conclusion: The diffusive chaos method demonstrates proficiency in generating comprehensive VTCPs for disordered voices with varying severity. In contrast to acoustic parameters that provide a single measure of disorder, VTCPs can be used to detect subtler changes by observing variations in each VTC over time. This method also provides the advantage of quantifying stochastic noise components that are due to breathiness in the voice.

Abstract:
Nonlinear measures such as the correlation dimension, the correlation entropy, and the noise level were used in this article to characterize normal and pathological voices. These invariants were estimated through an automated algorithm based on the recently proposed U-correlation integral. Our results show that the voice dynamics have a low dimension. The value of correlation dimension is greater for pathological voices than for normal ones. Furthermore, its value also increases along with the type of the voice. The low correlation entropy values obtained for normal and pathological type 1 and type 2 voices suggest that their dynamics are nearly periodic. Regarding the noise level, in the context of voice signals, it can be interpreted as the power of an additive stochastic perturbation intrinsic to the voice production system. Our estimations suggest that the noise level is greater for pathological voices than for normal ones. Moreover, it increases along with the type of voice, being the highest for type 4 voices. From these results, we can conclude that the voice production dynamical system is more complex in the presence of a pathology. In addition, the presence of the inherent stochastic perturbation strengthens along with the voice type. Finally, based on our results, we propose that the noise level can be used to quantitatively differentiate between type 3 and type 4 voices.

Abstract:
Automatic detection and assessment of Vocal Folds pathologies using signal processing techniques knows an extensively challenge use in the voice or speech research community. This paper contributes the application of the Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA) to a glottal signal waveform in order to evaluate the dynamic process of Vocal Folds (VFs) for diagnosis and classify the voice disorders. The proposed solution starts by extracting the glottal signal waveform from the voice signal through an inverse filtering algorithm. In the next step, the parameters of RQA are determined via the Recurrent Plot (RP) structure of the glottal signal where the normal voice is considered as a reference. Finally, these parameters are used as input features set of a hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization-Support Vector Machines (PSO-SVM) algorithms to segregate between normal and pathological voices. For the test validation, we have adopted the collection of Saarbrucken Voice Database (SVD) where we have selected the long vowel /a:/ of 133 normal samples and 260 pathological samples uttered by four groups of subjects : persons having suffered from vocal folds paralysis, persons having vocal folds polyps, persons having spasmodic dysphonia and normal voices. The obtained results show the effectiveness of RQA applied to the glottal signal as a features extraction technique. Indeed, the PSO-SVM as a classification method presented an effective tool for assessment and diagnosis of pathological voices with an accuracy of 97.41%

Abstract:
Abstract The number of different voice constructions is controversial in Philippine linguistics. There are two approaches to establishing the voice inventory: (1) based on the number of voice affixes; (2) based on semantics of constructions, using opaque definitions of roles without any formal basis. Tagalog data supports neither approach. Many verbal roots form voice paradigms of up to seven members. The ungroundedness in any formal properties in the second approach often leads to different sets of voices with significant subjective variation. This paper suggests employing formal criteria for establishing an exhaustive inventory of semantic roles and voices in Tagalog: (1) Distinct marking in non-subject position; (2) co-occurrence of voice forms in paradigms; (3) co-occurrence of participants in constructions; (4) existence of a co-referential voice form. 16 participants and 13 voices are established in Tagalog, using the suggested criteria, which also provide a possibility for creating a typology of Philippine voice inventories.

Abstract:
Voice samples of 16 adult patients with vocal fold paralysis and 6 normal adults were recorded and evaluated by 27 listeners (9 speech-language pathologists, 9 otolaryngologists, and 9 lay listeners). The listeners rated the voices of the speakers on a 10-point scale on six vocal parameters (pitch, loudness, hoarseness, vocal roughness, breathiness, and overall quality). The 16 patients represented three different treatment approaches (teflon injection, 4; voice therapy, 6; and muscle-nerve reinnervation surgery, 6). Voice therapy and muscle nerve reinnervation surgery were both rated more successful than teflon injection in terms of improvement from pretreatment to posttreatment voices for all six vocal parameters. Normal speakers’ voices were rated higher than the voices of any treatment group. Speech-language pathologists were more reliable listeners than the other two listener groups. A case is made for using a period of trial voice therapy while waiting for possible spontaneous nerve healing in unilateral vocal fold paralysis patients who do not have aspiration problems and who have a competent cough. The majority of patients studied presented with unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, and none recovered vocal fold function during the course of the study.

Abstract:
"EDIFICE" Opus 4. No. 2, is a composition scored for double, mixed chorus, soprano and baritone soli, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in Bb, 2 bassoons, 4 horns in F, 2 trumpets in C, 2 trombones, and bass trombone. The piece is based on the poem EDIFICE, by Tean E. Schultz, which was written at the request of the composer.
The philosophical impetus of this work stems from the process of perspectival redefinition, the resultant alteration in perceptual space being of primary importance. This could be viewed as the meta-text of the poem and forms the basis for an iconic realization of this concept in "EDIFICE".
The work is characterized by the unusual spatial disposition of its constituent ensembles. Specifically, the two mixed choirs are antiphonally situated, one on either side of the audience, with the wood winds and brass set in two concentric circles between the two choirs. The wood winds and bass trombone are enclosed by the remaining brass. This arrangement of the instruments relates directly to the imagery implicit in the third segment of the poem; " ... I will not listen, My self is pouring Outside me; Like a cast of metal Covers me ... ".
In terms of compositional designs the work explores such techniques as cyclical permutation of phonemic units derived through the phonetic fragmentation of text segments; phonemic manipulation in a multi-layered texture for the purpose of timbral variation; inexact rhythmic imitation, termed "quasi cannon"; serialized and "eroded" breathing rhythms; continuous redisposition of semi-chromatic pitch cells as foundational harmonic structures; and textural "cross-fading" within the antiphonal distribution of forces.

Chédotal, Romain. "Modélisation du catalyseur quatre-voies." Paris 6, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PA066025.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of this work was to model the 4-way catalyst which specificity is to simultaneously eliminate these four pollutants. The modeling of this system could be carried out due to a bibliographical study and also thanks to a thorough experimental study on a synthetic gases bench. These tests highlighted the dominant impact of NO2 in this system not only for Nox storage but also for soot oxydation. The formation of NO2 was thus a strong point of this study. A better conversion of NO2 improves NOx storage, with also a higher storage rate. Several limiting parameters for NO2 formation could be identified: kinetics at low temperature, thermodynamics at higher temperature and also reductors. Regarding soot, NO2 has a promoting role for soot oxidation This reaction also compete with NOx storage, which results in a NOx storage rate decrease but it only slightly influences the storage capacity of the catalyst. Soot also influence the other pollutants conversion rates. The consumed oxygen and the obstruction of the catalytic sites access also slow down the conversion of CO and HC. These different observations were taken into account to elaborate the 4-ways catalyst model. The reaction mechanism and the kinetic model derived from this experimental study made it possible to obtain conclusive simulation results. Simulations of temperature programmed oxidation tests gave good results. Those of NOx storage were conclusive at high temperature. But at low temperature, the catalyst behaviour is more difficult to reproduce. The particle filter part and regeneration of soot still have to be integrated into the model

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
A seven steps synthesis of (+)-4-déméthoxy-9-déacétyl-9-hydroxyméthyl daunomycinone is described with an overall yield of ~20 to 30%. The strategy of the tetracyclic ring construction required two successive aldol condensation reactions (inter and intramolecular) under Lewis or Marschalk conditions between leucoquinizarine (DCB ring) and an aldehyde derived from the α-D-isosaccharino-1,4 lactone (precursor of ring A). The use of this highly functionalized carbohydrate avoids the incorporation of the hydroxyl groups at C-7 and/or C-9 at the last stage. Two noteworthy aspects of the synthesis were the stereocontrolled sequence and the stereospecific cyclization leading exclusively to the natural configuration 7(s), 9(s) cis of anthracyclinones. The anthracycline resulting from the coupling with 2-déoxy-L-fucose chloride is great interest since the first cytotoxicity tests show a similar activity in vitro to that of doxorubicin

Abstract:
The heart of this study is an analysis of teacher–child dialogue in a classroom environment. An authentic dialogue enables children to express their real thoughts and ideas, to present insights, to ask questions, to make comments and to argue about different interpretations. In an effort to help our future teachers improve the quality of their verbal and nonverbal interactions with children as well as emotional and social support, we created a “community of learners”. Mentors and eight students - teachers (Israeli Jews and Arabs) participated in a reciprocal process of learning through experimentation while building new knowledge. Their interactions were examined how the teachers’ verbal and nonverbal responsiveness helped them to open or close conversational spaces for children while enabling them to listen to their voices. The research methodology was a discourse analysis i.e. analyzing the use of language while carrying out an act of communication in a given context. It presents a qualitative analysis of 20 transcripts of students - teacher's conversations with Israeli Jewish and Arab children from ages 4 – 6 years old. The analysis revealed that as teachers provided open conversational spaces with children, authentic dialogue emerged. Both voices were expressed and the child’s world was heard. The significance of thisstudy isto demonstrate the importance that authentic dialogue between teachers and young children has on the learning process as well as teacher’s acknowledgment on how children think and feel. This offers an opportunity for them to learn with and from the children.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the potential role of emotion in changing our machine design, based upon the experiments conducted for about 20 years by TMIT (Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Technology) research group headed by the author. An automobile design shares the same issues as those in our future machine design. In order to clarify these points, experiment to detect driver’s emotion were carried out. Our research to detect driver’s emotion started from the observations of a driver in driving, and based on them, experiments to detect driver’s emotion from face, sound and body were carried out. The following points were made clear. (1) a driving simulator is not good because a subject is in a different state of mind and physical conditions from actual driving. (2) Dynamic image processing is valid, but to make it effective, a simple image processing technique must be developed and a technique to remove lighting change effects must be developed. (3) When detecting from face, feature points must be carefully chosen. (4) Although sound is very promising, drivers do not utter voices often and if they do, their durations are very short. But if we introduce voice guidance systems, which would be much easier in EVs, detection from sound would work far more effectively than that from dynamic image, because images are very difficult to process due to the frequently changing lighting. (5) Physical movements can be used very effectively to detect fatigue. (6) Physical movement may be utilized for safer driving. If a new communication system between a driver and a car can be developed, the design of a car would change drastically. We do not have to, for example, use a wheel to steer. We could use bars. Equipments can be placed far away from the driver, if voice guidance systems can be introduced. Thus, a far greater degree of design flexibility could be introduced and a driver and a car could work better together as a team.

Abstract:
Abstract: As a major figure of international modernism, Le Corbusier’s work has been subject to extensive critique and review both during his lifetime and since, to the extent that he has become the world’s most studied 20th century architect. While numerous attempts have been made to assess Le Corbusier’s works and ideas in their meaning and influence, little attention has been given to understanding the phenomena of critical writing and research that continues to surround the architect. Drawing upon research by the authors in preparing a 4-volume anthology of writings on Le Corbusier’s work for a major British publisher in 2016, the paper will trace critical reaction to the architect’s practice through a survey investigation of research and writing produced mainly in English from the 1920s to the present. The paper will give a chronological account of the issues, ideas and approaches that have emerged in critical writings on Le Corbusier and his architecture, reporting on the historiographic questions that have presented themselves in undertaking such a large-scale survey work. Reviewing the work of well-known critics the survey has also sought out lesser-known voices whose presence reflects Le Corbusier’s impact around the world, providing new interpretations through fresh perspectives on his work. Ashley, Caitlyn, Elizabeth Spencer Berthiaume, Philip Berzin, Rikki Blassingame, Stephanie Bradley Fryer, John Cox, E. Samuel Crecelius, et al. Law and Policy Resource Guide: A Survey of Eminent Domain Law in Texas and the Nation. Edited by Gabriel Eckstein. Texas A&M University School of Law Program in Natural Resources Systems, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.37419/eenrs.eminentdomainguide.

Abstract:
Eminent Domain is the power of the government or quasi-government entities to take private or public property interests through condemnation. Eminent Domain has been a significant issue since 1879 when, in the case of Boom Company v. Patterson, the Supreme Court first acknowledged that the power of eminent domain may be delegated by state legislatures to agencies and non-governmental entities. Thus, the era of legal takings began. Though an important legal dispute then, more recently eminent domain has blossomed into an enduring contentious social and political problem throughout the United States. The Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution states, “nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.” Thus, in the wake of the now infamous decision in Kelo v. City of New London, where the Court upheld the taking of private property for purely economic benefit as a “public use,” the requirement of “just compensation” stands as the primary defender of constitutionally protected liberty under the federal constitution. In response to Kelo, many state legislatures passed a variety of eminent domain reforms specifically tailoring what qualifies as a public use and how just compensation should be calculated. Texas landowners recognize that the state’s population is growing at a rapid pace. There is an increasing need for more land and resources such as energy and transportation. But, private property rights are equally important, especially in Texas, and must be protected as well. Eminent domain and the condemnation process is not a willing buyer and willing seller transition; it is a legally forced sale. Therefore, it is necessary to consider further improvements to the laws that govern the use of eminent domain so Texas landowners can have more assurance that this process is fair and respectful of their private property rights when they are forced to relinquish their land. This report compiles statutes and information from the other forty-nine states to illustrate how they address key eminent domain issues. Further, this report endeavors to provide a neutral third voice in Texas to strike a more appropriate balance between individual’s property rights and the need for increased economic development. This report breaks down eminent domain into seven major topics that, in addition to Texas, seemed to be similar in many of the other states. These categories are: (1) Awarding of Attorneys’ Fee; (2) Compensation and Valuation; (3) Procedure Prior to Suit; (4) Condemnation Procedure; (5) What Cannot be Condemned; (6) Public Use & Authority to Condemn; and (7) Abandonment. In analyzing these seven categories, this report does not seek to advance a particular interest but only to provide information on how Texas law differs from other states. This report lays out trends seen across other states that are either similar or dissimilar to Texas, and additionally, discusses interesting and unique laws employed by other states that may be of interest to Texas policy makers. Our research found three dominant categories which tend to be major issues across the country: (1) the awarding of attorneys’ fees; (2) the valuation and measurement of just compensation; and (3) procedure prior to suit.
