Abstract:
Background: Although cure rates in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are quite high with combined chemotherapy regimens, complete response (CR) and long-term survival rates in adults are 80–90 and 30–40%, respectively. Currently, combined chemotherapy regimens, such as Hyper-CVAD and PETHEMA, are used in patients with adult ALL. However, there has been no study comparing the results of Hyper-CVAD and PETHEMA ALL-93. Methods: In this retrospective single-center study, we evaluated the results of Hyper-CVAD and PETHEMA ALL-93 in 51 ALL patients treated between September 2008 and March 2017 at the Department of Hematology, Faculty of Medicine, Karadeniz Technical University. Results: Thirty-eight patients were treated with Hyper-CVAD and 13 with PETHEMA ALL-93. CR was obtained in 90 and 100% of patients, respectively. Survival estimates were comparable between Hyper-CVAD and PETHEMA ALL-93, with a median overall survival (OS) and a median disease-free survival (DFS) of 17.5 and 12.1 months, respectively, for Hyper-CVAD and of 18.6 and 12.9 months, respectively, for PETHEMA ALL-93. The 2-year OS rates for Hyper-CVAD and PETHEMA ALL-93 were 30 and 40%, respectively, and the 2-year DFS rates were 28 and 44%, respectively. PETHEMA ALL-93 resulted in more hepatotoxicity, hypofibrinogenemia, aspergillus infection, and skin rash than Hyper-CVAD. Conclusions: Although Hyper-CVAD and PETHEMA ALL-93 showed similar effects, Hyper-CVAD was tolerated better. Age and comorbidities should be taken into account before a chemotherapy regimen is determined for patients with ALL.

Abstract:
We present here the system size dependence of balance energy for semi-central and peripheral collisions using quantum molecular dynamics model. For this study, the reactions of Ne 20+ Ne 20, Ca 40+ Ca 40, Ni 58+ Ni 58, Nb 93+ Nb 93, Xe 131+ Xe 131, and Au 197+ Au 197 are simulated at different incident energies and impact parameters. A hard equation of state along with nucleon–nucleon cross-sections between 40 and 55 mb explains the data nicely. Interestingly, balance energy follows a power law ∝Aτ for the mass dependence at all colliding geometries. The power factor τ is close to [Formula: see text] in central collisions, whereas it is [Formula: see text] for peripheral collisions suggesting stronger system size dependence at peripheral geometries. This also suggests that in the absence of momentum dependent interactions, Coulomb's interaction plays an exceedingly significant role. These results are further analyzed for nuclear dynamics at the balance point.

SummaryCarcass measurements including chemical composition and specific gravity data from 40 male and 40 female quails killed at 42 days of age were evaluated for use as an indirect means of estimating carcass fat. The results indicated that carcass fat was highly negative correlated to water (r = —0·93 and —0·87 for males and females, respectively) and that the inclusion of carcass protein improved the accuracy of prediction a little (r = -0·93 and -0·88). Carcass fat was only moderately related to specific gravity (r = —0·55 and —0·42) and the reliability as estimator of carcass fat was less than water or protein. Also, body weight was positively related to carcass fat (r = 0·71 and 0·42).

Abstract:
The magnetic confinement in tokamaks is for now the most advanced way towards energy production by nuclear fusion. Both theoretical and experimental studies showed that rotation generation can increase its performance by reducing the turbulent transport in tokamak plasmas. The rotation influence on the heat and particle fluxes is studied along with the angular momentum transport with the quasi-linear gyro-kinetic eigenvalue code QuaLiKiz. For this purpose, the QuaLiKiz code is modified in order to take the plasma rotation into account and compute the angular momentum flux. It is shown that QuaLiKiz framework is able to correctly predict the angular momentum flux including the $$\exb$$ shear induced residual stress as well as the influence of rotation on the heat and particle fluxes. The major approximations of QuaLiKiz formalisms are reviewed, in particular the ballooning representation at its lowest order and the eigenfunctions calculated in the hydrodynamic limit. The construction of the quasi-linear fluxes is also reviewed in details and the quasi-linear angular momentum flux is derived. The different contributions to the turbulent momentum flux are studied and successfully compared both against non-linear gyro-kinetic simulations and experimental data

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Array jet impingement heat transfer onto thin metal foams of different pore densities has been experimentally investigated in the current study. Aluminum foams with high porosity (93%) and different pore densities of 5, 20 and 40 ppi are subjected to array jet impingement under an intermediate crossflow exit scheme. The jets are arranged such that the streamwise jet-to-jet spacing is x/dj = 8 and spanwise jet-to-jet spacing is y/dj = 4. Jet to target plate spacing was maintained at z/dj = 6 where ‘z’ is the distance between the jet plate and the target surface on which metal foams were installed. A steady state heat transfer technique has been used to obtain local heat transfer coefficients along the streamwise direction. It is observed that heat transfer enhancement levels increase as pore density increases. An enhancement of 50–100% over the baseline case of impingement onto smooth surface is obtained over the flow range tested (3000 &lt; Redj &lt; 12000). At a constant pumping power of 40 W, an enhancement of 26–33% is obtained for the different pore densities tested.

Abstract:
<p>During the 1960s and 70s, the UK motorway network underwent rapid expansion and a significant number of bridges were constructed within a relatively short timeframe. A novel family of structures was developed incorporating modified Mesnager hinges within their decks. Over one hundred such structures were constructed.</p><p>The incorporation of hinge details within bridge decks was seen at the time as being an innovative approach to simplifying the design and standardising details on bridges having a range of span and functional requirements. However, over 50 years later they now represent a significant maintenance challenge to bridge owners as a result of the critical hinge reinforcement being inaccessible for inspection therefore constituting hidden, critical elements. In addition, significant variations in placing and restraining the reinforcement during construction added to their vulnerability to the chloride contaminated water that inevitably seeps through these joints as deck waterproofing breaks down over time.</p><p>Highways England funded a research project by the UK Transport Research Laboratory between 2000-2004 that led to the publication of Interim Advice Note 40/01, 51/03 and ultimately Advice Note 93/09 to establish guidelines on how these structures should be managed. This paper will outline how the BA 93/09 approach has been supplemented during the management of the 16 hinge deck structures along the M4 corridor in Wales that are operated by Welsh Government.</p>

Abstract:
Wall shear stress (WSS) in blood vessels has been shown to play an important role in the development of atherosclerosis. In particular, regions of low and oscillating WSS have been shown to correlate with the localization of atherosclerosis. Thus, we hypothesize that increasing the WSS for patients with peripheral vascular diseases (PVD) will either reduce PVD severity or slow its progression. We analyzed WSS changes from a study by Delis et al. on 32 limbs of PVD patients [1]. Results show that intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) increases mean WSS by 170% and 240% in PVD patients and healthy subjects, respectively. Peak WSS was found to increase by 93% and 40% in PVD patients and healthy subjects, respectively. In addition, we examined changes in NOX level with use of IPC on five limbs from PVD patients. Our study demonstrated increased NOx levels in subjects after IPC. Further research is needed to determine the benefits of IPC for PVD patients.

Abstract:
An experimental program sponsored jointly by SNAM Rete Gas, Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. and TransCanada Pipelines Ltd. was conducted on cold bend pipes under combined loading. These tests were designed to study the local buckling behavior and to develop the critical compressive strain criteria for cold bend pipes under combined loading. The test program includes eight full-scale specimens of NPS24 and NPS30 pipes with pipe thickness up to 14.3 mm. The test parameters include different D/t ratios (44, 69, and 93), material grades (X60, X65, and X80), bend angles (1.0 to 1.5 degree/diameter), and operation pressures (0%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of SMYS). In addition to full-scale tests, initial imperfections and residual strains due to cold bend processes were also measured. This paper describes the test specimens, test setup, instrumentation, and test procedures used in the program. A brief discussion of the test results is also covered in the paper.

Full text
Abstract:
The surgical treatment of adults with cataracts is one of the most common and most successful of procedures, with 93% of adult patients achieving 20/40 or better acuity (Stark et al., 1987). In contrast, outcome following surgical treatment of infants with dense congenital unilateral cataracts historically has been dismal, with few patients achieving 20/200 acuity and most achieving only light perception (Hiles and Waller, 1977; Shapiro et al, 1978). Despite routinely excellent surgical outcomes and the availability of infant aphakic contact lenses, the unilateral visual deprivation experienced by these infants during the first months of life results in a severe abnormality in visual development which is often resistant to any late efforts toward visual rehabilitation. However, data from animal models of unilateral visual deprivation suggest that there may exist an early critical period during which the effects of visual deprivation are, at least to some extent, reversible (Hubei, 1982; von Noorden and Crawford, 1979; Weisel, 1982).

Abstract:
Blended learning has been an on-going mode of teaching and learning along with fully face-to-face and online modes at the Fiji National University (FNU) since the university adopted Moodle and other technological tools. However, online and blended learning became more significant in April to November 2021, when the university closed as part of the national disease control measures in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. As part of the technology-enabled learning supported by the Commonwealth of Learning at FNU a study on the impact of blended learning was conducted to assess the university’s use of blended learning and its impact on student learning experiences and academic achievement. Students’ attitudes towards blended learning and the relationship between blended learning and students’ grades were examined. The results of the survey indicated that the majority (84%–93%) of the students perceived blended learning positively, with most (89%–92%) reporting that their teachers played a positive role in their learning and took an interest in their learning. A comparison of the students’ grades between blended and non-blended learning courses showed mixed results: a difference in the grades was noted in six courses (40%) but in nine other courses (60%), there was no significant difference. Overall, students had a positive opinion of the blended learning environment as it provided them with opportunities to learn when, where and at a pace that suited them.

The Clifton 7.5' quadrangle is in western Tooele County about 40 miles (65 km) south of Wendover, Utah. The northeast part of the quadrangle includes the Clifton Hills and the southwest part includes the northern Deep Creek Range/Mountains. These uplands are separated by Overland Canyon and Clifton Flat (figure 1, plate 1). The quadrangle is in the Basin and Range physiographic province between the Great Salt Lake Desert to the east and Deep Creek Valley to the west. Terrain and vegetation are typical of the Basin and Range province and include rugged mountains separated by adjoining basins. Notable geographic landmarks within the mapping area include Montezuma Peak, Clifton Flat, Blood Mountain, Young Peak, and Abercrombie Peak. To the north of the quadrangle a few people reside in the hamlet of Gold Hill, which is named for an old mining outpost; however, no permanent settlement exists within the Clifton quadrangle. The area is accessible via U.S. Highway 93 south from Wendover then east on the Ibapah Road and following maintained paved and gravel roads to the Gold Hill townsite and south, or directly east to the Clifton map area. The area can also be accessed about 115 miles (185 km) northwest of Delta by mostly gravel roads. Land ownership in the quadrangle is primarily public (Federal and State), with private land on patented ground around significant mining areas. The northern part of the quadrangle (Clifton Hills area) contains the southern half of the Gold Hill mining district, periodically active since the late 1800s. The northern end of the Deep Creek Range/Mountains is covered by the Deep Creek Mountains Wilderness Study Area. To the east is the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground, whereas to the northeast is the U.S. Air Force Utah Test and Training Range-South area. Active uses of the quadrangle include mining, transportation, agriculture, and recreation.

Abstract:
MGR recorded 1168 violent incidents in 1-21 September 2023, mostly triggered by politics, access to resources, and other socio-economic factors. More than 189 deaths and 1123 injuries have been recorded from these incidents. The highest number of violent incidents have been recorded in the form of clashes and attacks (314). Some 207 incidents are directly or indirectly political violence which resulted in 12 deaths. Geographically, Khulna (236) scores the highest number of violence followed by Chittagong (223), Dhaka (216), and Rajshahi (161). There were 93 protests and demonstrations and at least 59 were triggered by politics. While some 31.05% of political violence contributed by Bangladesh Awami League & affiliates, 13.00% contributed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Intra-party violence within the Awami League (23) showed a significant surge in 1-21 September 2023. Whereas 66% incidents were rural, 34% violence incidents took place in urban areas in 1-21 September. In the period of 1-21 September, 64 incidents of violence have been recorded as a form of student violence across different regions. A notable finding was that approximately 40% of political clashes and attacks were directly linked to student or campus-related conflicts.
