Abstract:
ABSTRACT The capsid proteins VP2 and VP3 of infectious bursal disease virus, a birnavirus, are derived from the processing of a large polyprotein: NH2-pVP2-VP4-VP3-COOH. Although the primary cleavage sites at the pVP2-VP4 and VP4-VP3 junctions have been identified, the proteolytic cascade involved in the processing of this polyprotein is not yet fully understood, particularly the maturation of pVP2. By using different approaches, we showed that the processing of pVP2 (residues 1 to 512) generated VP2 and four small peptides (residues 442 to 487, 488 to 494, 495 to 501, and 502 to 512). We also showed that in addition to VP2, at least three of these peptides (residues 442 to 487, 488 to 494, and 502 to 512) were associated with the viral particles. The importance of the small peptides in the virus cycle was assessed by reverse genetics. Our results showed that the mutants lacking the two smaller peptides were viable, although the virus growth was affected. In contrast, deletions of the domain 442 to 487 or 502 to 512 did not allow virus recovery. Several amino acids of the peptide 502 to 512 appeared essential for virus viability. Substitutions of the P1 and/or P1" position were engineered at each of the cleavage sites (P1-P1": 441-442, 487-488, 494-495, 501-502, and 512-513). Most substitutions at the pVP2-VP4 junction (512-513) and at the final VP2 maturation cleavage site (441-442) were lethal. Mutations of intermediate cleavage sites (487-488, 494-495, and 501-502) led to viable viruses showing different but efficient pVP2 processing. Our data suggested that while peptides 488 to 494 and 495 to 501 play an accessory role, peptides 442 to 487 and 502 to 512 have an unknown but important function within the virus cycle.

Abstract:
Before the fifth century, the imperial identity of a ruler seems to have disabled him as a writer rather than encouraged him to be more prolific. Literary production gradually became centered in the court by the mid-fifth century, and a distinct feature of Southern Dynasties literature is the phenomenon that emperors and princes joined with their courtiers in the act of writing poetry on social occasions. This paper focuses on a number of poems by Emperor Wen of the Song (r. 424-453), Yan Yanzhi (384-456), Xie Tiao (464-499), Shen Yue (441-513), and Liu Xiaochuo (481-539) that represent kingship and empire and thereby become a means of disseminating and implementing imperial power. In particular, it examines the physical and discursive construction of the capital Jiankang. We see thereby that Southern Dynasties court poetry was instrumental in the performance of sovereignty and the envisioning of the new, southern empire.

Abstract:
Trees of each of five rootstock genotypes (M.7a, M.9, M.26, MM.111, Mark,) were inoculated above and below ground with three strains of Agrobacterium tumefaciens. These were compared to controls that were uninoculated or inoculated with sterile deionized water. All rootstocks tested were quite susceptible to crown gall, but M.9 and Mark were consistantly among the most susceptible genotypes. Percent of inoculated sites forming galls above ground ranged from 43% in M.7a to 77% in M.9 and the mean size of galls that formed ranged from 3.7 mm in M.26 to 7.7 mm in M.9. All rootstocks except M.9 formed galls at a higher percentage of inoculated sites that were below ground. Percent of below ground inoculations forming galls ranged from 67% in MM.111 to 100% in Mark while mean size of galls underground ranged from 4.2 mm in MM.111 to 15.3 mm in M.9. The proportion of inoculated sites forming galls below ground in M.7a was twice as high as in above ground sites For rootstock × strain means, each measure of crown gall susceptibility above ground was significantly correlated with corresponding below ground data at the 0.01 level. to three rootstocks, some trees inoculated with sterile deionized water also produced apparent galls at sites below the soil line (100% in Mark, 60% in M.7a, 22% in M.26) although none of the above ground control inoculations produced galls. Uninoculated controls showed no gall formation.

Abstract:
Powder IR spectra of natural Ca-amphiboles were studied in the spectral range 4000 to 400 cm'1. The examined samples are: actinolite, tremolite, Mg-hornblende and pargasite. According to their spectra all the minerals of the four species present common features at 3658-3660, 919, 683-687, 661-668, 505-513, 457-464 and 419 cm . Additionally to these bands, the spectra of the actinolites, tremolites and Mghornblendes present common characteristics at 3673, 1094-1098, 989-998, 951, 752-758 and 441-449 cm'1. Moreover, six absorption bands are shown in the spectra of the pargasites at 3690, 981-984, 931, 805-811, 734 and 696-698 cm'1, in addition to the common bands appeared in all Ca-amphiboles, which do not appear in the spectra of the actinolites, tremolites and Mg-hornblendes. The spectra of pargasites are remarkably different from the spectra of the other three mineral species. These discrepancies could be attributed to differences in the structure of pargasites relative to the other three species as well as to the occupancy of the A site especially with Na+.
