Abstract:
The 2nd Symposium of the Canadian Society for Virology (CSV2018) was held in June 2018 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, as a featured event marking the 200th anniversary of Dalhousie University. CSV2018 attracted 175 attendees from across Canada and around the world, more than double the number that attended the first CSV symposium two years earlier. CSV2018 provided a forum to discuss a wide range of topics in virology including human, veterinary, plant, and microbial pathogens. Invited keynote speakers included David Kelvin (Dalhousie University and Shantou University Medical College) who provided a historical perspective on influenza on the 100th anniversary of the 1918 pandemic; Sylvain Moineau (Université Laval) who described CRISPR-Cas systems and anti-CRISPR proteins in warfare between bacteriophages and their host microbes; and Kate O’Brien (then from Johns Hopkins University, now relocated to the World Health Organization where she is Director of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals), who discussed the underlying viral etiology for pneumonia in the developing world, and the evidence for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as a primary cause. Reflecting a strong commitment of Canadian virologists to science communication, CSV2018 featured the launch of Halifax’s first annual Soapbox Science event to enable public engagement with female scientists, and the live-taping of the 499th episode of the This Week in Virology (TWIV) podcast, hosted by Vincent Racaniello (Columbia University) and science writer Alan Dove. TWIV featured interviews of CSV co-founders Nathalie Grandvaux (Université de Montréal) and Craig McCormick (Dalhousie University), who discussed the origins and objectives of the new society; Ryan Noyce (University of Alberta), who discussed technical and ethical considerations of synthetic virology; and Kate O’Brien, who discussed vaccines and global health. Finally, because CSV seeks to provide a better future for the next generation of Canadian virologists, the symposium featured a large number of oral and poster presentations from trainees and closed with the awarding of presentation prizes to trainees, followed by a tour of the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site and an evening of entertainment at the historic Alexander Keith’s Brewery.

Abstract:
In September 2014 a group of 130 marine biologists from 26 countries assembled in the 49th European Marine Biology Symposium (EMBS) held in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The EMBS is a series of annual conferences providing presentations and dialogue in a fairly informal atmosphere – the perfect conditions for encouraging interactions on state-of-art issues in marine science in Europe and beyond. The 49th symposium, organized by the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, included four keynote lectures, 65 oral presentations and 92 poster contributions under the overarching theme ‘A variety of interactions in the marine environment’.

Abstract:
Congenital cataract is the most common cause of the visual disability and blindness in childhood. This study aimed to identify gene mutations responsible for autosomal dominant congenital cataract (ADCC) in a Chinese family using next-generation sequencing technology. This family included eight unaffected and five affected individuals. After complete ophthalmic examinations, the blood samples of the proband and two available family members were collected. Then the whole exome sequencing was performed on the proband and Sanger sequencing was applied to validate the causal mutation in the two family members and control samples. After the whole exome sequencing data were filtered through a series of existing variation databases, a heterozygous mutation c.499T<G (p.E167X) in CRYBB2 gene was found. And the results showed that the mutation cosegregated with the disease phenotype in the family and was absolutely absent in 1000 ethnicity-matched control samples. Thus, the heterozygous mutation c.499T<G (p.E167X) in CRYBB2 was the causal mutation responsible for this ADCC family. In conclusion, our findings revealed a novel stopgain mutation c.499T<G (p.E167X) in the exon 6 of CRYBB2 which expanded the mutation spectrum of CRYBB2 in Chinese congenital cataract population and illustrated the important role of CRYBB2 in the genetics research of congenital cataract.

This study aims at understanding the connection between the participation works of “elementary group” and “junior group” during 40 th to 49th National Science Fair and the item e teaching material - “New Energy” in the 4th stage of the course subtopic “The Development and Exploitation of 513 Energy” for the Science and Technology Area under the Nine-Year Integrated Curriculum system. For the purpose of analyzing their relationship, this study will examine the acquired data with 9 self-made checking items; then, it will further discuss the result of the analysis. To achieve the research goal stated above, this study starts with literature review, understanding National Science Fair and the basic concepts, content, and relevant theories and researches of New Energy, as the basic reference of 9 checking items and the basis to analyze, compare, and discuss the research result. Consequently, this study will analyze the content of the presentation works displayed by “elementary group” and “junior group” during 40 th to 49 th National Science Fair. The results were as follows: 1. Before 41st National Science Fair, both “elementary group” and “junior group” had presented more works. However, ever since the 42nd Science Fair, the rules had been altered, resulting into fewer presentation works. Nonetheless, the author found that the correlation between their research topics and the course content is on the increase. In elementary group, the majority of their works related more to Natural Science than to Life and Applied Science. For junior participants, their works significantly focus on Physics and Chemistry, then follow Biology and Earth Science, and Life and Applied Science is the least. 2. Consequent with the amendment of the rules in 42nd National Science Fair, both elementary group and junior group show growing tendencies in participation rate and present greater varieties of their topic categories. In elementary group, works for Natural Science and Life and Applied Science are primarily concerned with solar energy and wind energy. In junior group, works for Physics, Chemistry, Life and Applied Science mainly focus on biomass energy, solar energy, and wind energy. However, the participation rates of Biology and Earth Science remain much the same after the rules of Science Fair modified. 3. In National Science Fair, if works regarding New Energy correspond with over 78% in the 9 checking items, the elementary and junior participants can receive awards, and the award rate of the participation works exceeds 50%.
