Abstract:
The Fifty Shades-trilogy by E. L. James has become a cultural phenomenon, and is widely debated as such. The main issue of the debate is often concerning the story’s relation to women’s position in society. Common standpoints are that it is either contributing to women’s sexual liberation or that it perpetuates violence against women. The story is also considered to be of poor literary quality. In my thesis, I seek for approaches to understand the story beyond polarisation. I am performing a reparative reading of the first novel of the trilogy, Fifty Shades of Grey, through Michel Foucault’s notions of knowledge, power and pleasure. The purpose is to examine how these work in relation to each other, and how they relate to the presentation of sexuality and subjectivity in the novel. Furthermore, I engage in dialogue with previous research on Fifty Shades in the feminist field. In my analysis, I illustrate how knowledge, power and pleasure are synergetic and under constant negotiation. They are woven together and move between characters, laying the foundation for the subjects and their sexualities. I demonstrate how the power relations operate in multiple directions between Christian, Ana and Ana’s friend Kate, which is something that Ana shows awareness of. Further, I find that a conflict between mind and body occurs. Ana assumes the position of the knowing subject, through which she approaches corporality, and thereby gains new independence. Finally, I reflect on corporality’s intrusion of language in relation to the (de)valuation of the literary quality of the novel. As a question to bring to future studies, I ask whether the reading of Fifty Shades of Grey might be understood as consumption of body rather than consumption of literature, sexism or heteronormativity.<br>Fifty Shades-trilogin av E. L. James har blivit ett populärkulturellt fenomen som omdebatterats kraftigt.

Abstract:
Public sector reforms of recent decades in Europe have promoted managerialism and aimed at introducing private sector thinking and practices. However, with regard to public sector executives' self-understanding, managerial role identities have not replaced bureaucratic ones; rather, components from both paradigms have combined. In this article, we introduce a bi-dimensional approach (attitudes and practices) that allows for different combinations and forms of hybridity. Empirically, we explore the role identities of public sector executives across Europe, building on survey data from over 7,000 top public officials in 19 countries (COCOPS survey). We identify country-level profiles, as well as patterns across countries, and find that administrative traditions can account for these profiles and patterns only to a limited extent. Rather, they have to be complemented by factors such as stability of the institutional environment (indicating lower shares of hybrid combinations) or extent of reform pressures (indicating higher shares of hybrid combinations).

Abstract:
The current paper is a study of the character Christian Grey in the EL James trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey. The main aim is to find out how masculinity, sexuality and gender are constructed in this erotic fantasy. More over terms as femininity, unmanliness and gender have relevance to the study. Several studies have been done on romance novels and Harlequin in particular from a gender perspective, but few of them from a masculine point of view. Hence, no earlier study has been done on Fifty Shades of Grey with masculinity studies as the main tool of masculinity, or with theories of romance. The novels have been read and analysed with studies of the romance literature and masculinity as the main tool of analysis. The result shows that the character Christian Grey is ambivalent towards femininity and has a fear of losing control. And from this point of view the novels problematize patriarchy, male control and superiority.

Eshghi, Shirin. "Female authorship and implicit power in women's erotica : Japanese "ladies' comics" and Fifty Shades of Grey." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/43745.

Full text
Abstract:
Can female readers perceive empowerment through sexually explicit, fictional stories that feature depictions of misogynistic relationships or encounters? In this thesis, I will attempt to answer this question by examining English- and Japanese-language examples of sexual writing for women, specifically the genre of women’s erotica (erotic fiction for a female audience). I will describe how women’s erotica in both languages is predominantly populated by female authors, and will argue that this allows readers to perceive sexual empowerment even when encountering storylines that feature female protagonists disempowered by male characters. The knowledge that the author is a woman perpetuates a belief on the side of the reader that the female protagonist is safe, and that she will enjoy the sexual acts that take place within the story. To illustrate this point, I will compare the recently-published Fifty Shades of Grey with Toraware no yoru (Captive night), a 1990s example of “ladies’ comics” (sexually explicit Japanese manga created for a female readership), which was re-published in e-format in 2009. I will demonstrate how the female sex of the authors enables readers to feel in control and empowered despite the often submissive role of the stories’ protagonists. I will also argue that both works have been marketed and framed in a manner that alludes to Japanese- and English-language autobiographical sexual writing that developed from the early 20th Century. I will establish how the confessional nature of these works helped construct a shared reality between reader and author in regards to sex and womanhood. The solicitation of stories from ladies’ comics readers and the emergence of Fifty Shades of Grey from the fan fiction community re-enforces the perception of a women-only space where text is influenced solely by a dialogue between female author and female reader. Although this female-centred space may in itself be a source of empowerment, the sustainability of such a space is precarious in the virtual environment, where the gender of author and reader cannot be guaranteed.

Abstract:
This qualitative study aims to study how sexuality is constructed in web articles on the movie Fifty Shades of Grey. The study is based on a social constructivist perspective where language is seen as constitutive of reality. The study is based on a Foucauldian discourse analysis which is used in order to see what is excluded and included in the articles’ construction of normal sexuality. The result shows that there are similarities in how the web articles produce normal sexuality. Firstly, sexuality is constructed as partner violence, where men are depicted as superior to women and heterosexual sexuality depicted as normal, resulting in homosexual sexuality being constructed as abnormal. Secondly, sexual subject positions are used to enhance sexuality and to construct the woman as subordinate. Thirdly, media tends to produce an inaccurate picture of BDSM practitioners, resulting in a depiction of these practioners as being abnormal. The conclusion of the study emphasizes the importance of examining how sexuality is produced by media, since sexual norms constructed in media discourses affect us humans and the prevailing norms existing in society.

Abstract:
This study has examined reader reviews that focuses on the novel Fifty shades of Grey. Through discourse analysis and the theories of Magnus Persson and Judith Butler the study has answered the question about why the readers read romance and erotica from their own point of view. The study aims to add tot he librarians ”critical look” based in gender theory and criticaltheory about literary taste when it comes to making selection choices. This study shows that the readers mainly verifies Butler`s heterosexual matrix by appealing to a heteronormative discourse and Perssons explanations as to why women read romance, i.e in a way more focused on feelings opposed to the more male and academically coded intellectual perspective, although there are some exceptions, for example interpretations that allows for a more disruptive gender reading. There are also examples of readers who have a more distanced and intellectual reading.

Wallen, Gail Fern. "Shades of grey: The euthanasia controversy and the rights of the conscious and rational terminally ill adult patient as seen in popular American magazines, 1896-1976." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/187468.

Full text
Abstract:
Euthanasia is a subject that is fraught with legal, medical and religious overtones. It is a highly charged emotional subject on which the majority of the American public appear to have a definite opinion. Yet, these opinions are not formed in a vacuum and are usually to be found based upon an individual's personal experiences and upbringing; the experiences of friends, acquaintances, or co-workers; and the views and comments heard, seen and read through America's mass media. By studying one specialized form of communication, the popular American magazine between 1896 and 1976, a clearer understanding emerges of the roots of today's euthanasia controversy. The magazines surveyed suggested that the euthanasia argument shifted its emphasis at mid century from the right to choose and its attendant corollaries to the right to die with its corresponding issues. Underlying this shift is the subliminal acknowledgment that America, through an unwritten contract with techno-medicine, has exchanged its self-determination for the promises of biological restructuring and prolongation of human life. Such a contract denies individual freedom to determine the importance of one's quality of life versus quantity of life. Americans since 1976 have been searching for ways to recapture their self-determination in the end-of-life decision making process.

Abstract:
Cahill, Anna Mary. "Forty shades of grey : women in the Irish electronics industry." Thesis, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/11652.

Full text
Abstract:
This research study examines the experiences of women working in electronics assembly in Cork, Ireland in the context of globalization and the growing internationalization and feminization of the industrial work force. Utilizing a case study format, the study presents descriptive information on the health concerns and occupational health and safety experiences of 12 women working at two electronics' plants. Findings were congruent with statistics in the general literature. The majority of participants were young women who had worked in the industry from 4 to 17 years. Most of the employment shifts were horizontal in nature and the majority of participants had experienced little upward mobility. The health concerns raised are salient: 76% reported experiencing serious, recurring headaches; 75% reported serious skin concerns - rashes, bruising, broken skin; 67% reported respiratory difficulties and 67% difficulties with vision. The most significant findings were in the area of occupational health and safety. None of the study participants had ever received any form of training on chemicals' handling or awareness, including the health and safety co-ordinator at one plant. Contrary to the legislation, various workplace measures to protect workers' health are neither being implemented nor enforced. Participants generally reported feeling unsupported by both the health and safety body and the union structure. General recommendations and recommendations for further research in a number of areas are presented.

The identity and culture of the Indian people of Johannesburg is the primary focus of this dissertation. The methods of representing this identity and culture are likened to a spectacle, the concept of which is greatly explored theoretically and thereafter, translated architecturally. This was achieved by exploring the idea of the spectacle in relation to experience. It further explores the definitions of spectacle and experience in an attempt to answer the real question of how to create a spectacle of experience through the use of architecture in order to educate and facilitate social cohesion by creating a cultural centre which encourages people of all races and creeds to participate, focusing on the Indian culture. In order to create a program to suit the idea of cohesion, this dissertation investigated the theory of memory in architecture. Memory of place and people are intrinsic to understanding th importance of the Indian people of Johannesburg and why such a facility is of importance to the Indian people but also to other races and creeds. This dissertation further wishes to highlight the importance of cultural preservation in South Africa. Whilst this project focuses on bringing a community closer through a facility that houses programme and activities indigenous to Indian South African people, the concept should be transferred to all other cultures. The architectural role is to allow space and place that allows for the transfer of knowledge and community.<br>EM2017

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation investigates how presidents build successful legislative coalitions and enact their agenda into law in the United States Congress. It argues that constituencies and electoral incentives cause members of Congress to respond to the president’s agenda in a systematic manner. The president’s strength in members’ constituencies interacts with members’ electoral incentives to determine whether members will vote for or against the president. The theoretical claims presented in this dissertation are supported by a combination of case studies and quantitative analysis. The empirical analysis utilizes a dataset with observations for every member of Congress from 1957 to the present. I find that constituency-level presidential strength causes systematic variance in members’ response to the president’s agenda. Vulnerable members of Congress are particularly sensitive to the president’s strength in their constituencies, while safe members of Congress are a bit less attentive to their constituencies. These findings contribute to our understanding of American politics by showing that the president’s ability to enact agenda items into law is affected by much more than mere party politics. This conclusion is especially relevant in the modern, polarized era in American politics.<br>text

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>傳播研究所<br>104<br>Romance has long been regarded by the feminists as opium for women; it is an amusement for escapists. In recent years, the “Fifty Shades of Grey” series has aroused a fashion of erotic romance. The story is filled with lusts and passion from female’s viewing angles, reversing the traditionally subject vs. object gender positions, and revealing sexual desires that used to be ignored and depressed. The study copes with arguments and viewpoints on romance from various factions of feminism, and then turns to the discussions on the rise of feminine writing power when it comes to the post-feminism period, a time when women are trying to get back their sovereignty of writing and put more emphases on the body, the lust, and the maternity, in order to unshackle themselves from the ideologies of being the denied, weak gender in the penis-centered world. There exists a group of fascinated readers, called them the “Grey fan group”. In this study, in-depth interviews with 13 Grey fans in Taiwan are conducted and details recorded about their life experiences. By using the methodology employed in Freud's psychoanalytic theory, how their backgrounds play a crucial role in affecting the process of switching them from romance fans to Grey fans is explored. Furthermore, based on fan-related theories, I summarized their behaviors and experiences of joy and tried to figure out the humanistic meanings and reverse-thinking of the Grey-fan writers or creators. Research findings are as follows: women are eager to gain fictitious care from men in the world of reading or writing; such eagerness is the premise of liberation of sexuality. The composition or creation by the fan group can be seen as the “second escape”; they intend to flee from the practical world where power structure of the gender is unbalanced, and also flee from the “female-discriminating complex” that implies their self-loathing conflicts. Their purposes are trying to accept and value the femininity and uniqueness possessed by their own gender. The BDSM sex style shown in the movie implies that women are fighting against the patriarchy-dominated ideologies, becoming more liberalized toward sex, and persuading people to respect each individual in their pursuit and realization of sex. Key words: Female sexuality, post-feminism, romance, fan group, BDSM

McGee, Tara Kathleen. "Shades of grey : community responses to chronic environmental lead contamination in Broken Hill, New South Wales." Phd thesis, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/11032.

Full text
Abstract:
Lead contamination is one of an extensive list of chronic environmental hazards which are being faced by an increasing number of communities worldwide. The potential biophysical effects of young children's exposure to relatively low levels of lead are widely recognised. In response to this awareness, policies and programs are being designed and implemented with the aim of reducing potential lead exposure. In addition to their significance for children's biophysical health, the success of these policies also have implications for the well-being of the children, families, and communities involved. This thesis argues that an understanding of the ways in which communities respond to environmental lead contamination is important for the development and implementation of appropriate interventions. This thesis examines community responses to chronic environmental lead contamination in Broken Hill, Australia, a community which is also dealing with mining industry retrenchments. It examines the nature of cognitive and behavioural coping responses, and the resulting effects on the health and well-being of the community and community members. It also examines how responses to the retrenchments interact with the community responses to lead contamination in a cumulative manner, and how mediating factors interact with the community response process. In order to shed light on this complex process, this interdisciplinary study draws together environmental stress and coping, social impact assessment, public health, and community responses to environmental contamination theory. Fieldwork conducted over nine months during six visits included the use of participant observation and in-depth interviews with parents with young children, retrenched workers and their families, and other Broken Hill residents. Interviews were also held with representatives of organisations. The research method proved to be useful for meeting the research aim, and for respecting research participants and the sensitive nature of the research topic. After becoming aware of the lead contamination, community members responded with cognitive minimisation of the lead contamination threat, containment of the threat to the family level, predominant use of private rather than public responses, and individual rather than collective coping strategies. The lead contamination, mediated by this coping process, had the effect of increasing stress and stigma for parents and families of young children most directly affected, reducing stress and stigma for other community members, increasing cooperation between local organisations, and weakening of community social networks. This process was mediated by the characteristics of the contaminant, characteristics of individuals, aspects of the social setting, and responses of organisations. The nature of the lead contamination, and individual residents' perceptions of its controllability interacted with the community response process. The aspects of the social setting which affected the community response process are cultural assumptions, beliefs and values, stigma, relationships between the mining company and the community, social support and undermining, social influence, and economic factors. Responses of organisations, including intervention programs, were also important. Responses to the mining retrenchments interacted within the community response process. A model of community responses to chronic environmental lead contamination in Broken Hill is developed. This thesis argues that health policy needs to focus on positive health and well-being, and should be guided by three principles- a focus on the community rather than individual and family levels, the aim of supporting parents, and communication. Such a reoriented approach will support the efforts of communities and community members to cope with chronic environmental lead contamination in an effective and equitable manner.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立金門大學<br>語言與跨文化碩士班<br>104<br>Translation books are getting more and more popular in Taiwan. When reading translation works, readers can not only learn from other cultures but also learn to respect the culture differences. Translation books offer us a chance to experience other cultures and get to know their attitudes and mentality. In view of this, translation is not just about the transfer of lingual texts but more about the exchange of culture and understanding between peoples. Traditionally, faithfulness to the original text (or the Source Text) is the top priority in the field of translation. The question is, how can we define faithfulness? So far, there are no scientific or objective standards for faithful translation. However, I have tried to locate the preliminary focal point of the current study---the translations of sex, which are usually taboos in many cultures and have become a challenge to translators. Indeed, not much literature is devoted to this area until now. Based on the phenomenal success of Fifty Shades of Grey, an English novel which was first published in 2001, sold over 125 million copies internationally and has been translated into 52 different languages, including Chinese, I believed that I have found the ideal text for this topic. The focus of this research would be: How did the translator translate texts with sex words? What significance can be gained from the analysis of the translation of these sex words in Fifty Shades of Grey? Also, what might be the proper ways to translate sexual terms; e.g., sexual activities, sex organs and BDSM? What might be the decisive factors influencing the translator's decision as to translate it literally or not? What cultural implication might be lying behind these translations? The study intends to analyze translation strategies that are used in the novel. Finally, it is expected that more studies on the taboo words in Chinese culture will be done.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 123-127)<br>This dissertation examines how three dystopian texts, namely Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, Jasper Fforde’s Shades of Grey and Veronica Roth’s Divergent trilogy, exhibit social conformity as a disciplinary mechanism of the ‘carceral’ – a notion introduced by poststructuralist thinker Michel Foucault. Employing poststructuralist discourse and deconstructive theory as a theoretical framework, the study investigates how each novel establishes its world as a successful carceral city that incorporates most, if not all, the elements of the incarceration system that Foucault highlights in Discipline and Punish. It establishes that the societies of the texts present potentially nightmarish future societies in which social and political “improvements” result in a seemingly better world, yet some essential part of human existence has been sacrificed. This study of these fictional worlds reflects on the carceral nature of modern society and highlights the problematic nature of the social and political practices to which individuals are expected to conform. Finally, in line with Foucault, it postulates that individuals need not be enclosed behind prison walls to be imprisoned; the very nature of our social systems imposes the restrictive power that incarcerates societies<br>English Studies<br>M.A. (English Studies)

To solve this problem, there are lots of researches emphasize on diversification of risks by constructing portfolios. This research focuses on applying the artificial intelligence tool to the portfolio selection strategy and spread trading, using the data of Taiwan 50 during April 2005 to March 2008. We use the new stock selection index to construct a portfolio to do the trading empirical study and find out the below conclusion: 1. In the aspect of stock return forecasting ability, using the Grey Fourier model gets better performance than using GM(1,1)model; and in the aspect of return volatility, using GM(1,1) gets better performance than GARCH(1,1) model. 2. According to the concept that the stock fluctuation will be effected by its direction of return and volatility, this research constructs a new stock selection index. We can construct a portfolio which has better performance than Taiwan 50 by this index. 3. In the timing strategy, using three signals of the same direction of return on investment can estimate the outcome of the next trading more correctly than using two signals. 4. In the period of this research, taking action or not on the timing strategy doesn’t make significant difference when we estimate there will be negative value of its return on investment. 5. When applying the portfolio constructed by the ranking first 26 stocks on the timing strategy of using three signals of positive return on investment value shows the best outcome.

Additionally, for the aspect of estimating the beta, we try to establish a more stable and correct forecasting model by applying the GM(1,1). Using the Theil’s U in the empirical research, the Theil’s U of the is only 11.24%. The declines 13.53% error than the original CAPM. Of 29 samples, 23 forecasting betas from have the smallest errors, which is the most precise one in 10 forecasting models. And though two-factor can raise R-square, the Theil’s U of two-factor model are two time large. So the performance of estimation on two-factor model is less than one-factor model. For aspect of stable, we use F test of two population variance analysis can find the variance of is the smallest one. Consequently, is the best forecasting model in 10 models acquired strong support from empirical result.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立屏東科技大學<br>企業管理系碩士班<br>93<br>This study intends to introduce grey prediction model GM (1,1) into the traditional technical analysis. It takes Taiwan 50 component stocks as the study subjects to check if it has the ability to improve the performance of the traditional technical index investment. It also compares the investment performance of each technical index and the buy-and-hold for the purpose of examining if the technical index is able to meliorate the investment performance. The t Detection is used to ensure if the investment performance is so significant as bigger than zero or smaller than zero. In the meantime, the Sharpe and Treynor Investment Portfolio index value evaluation is used to observe the investment performance of various technical indexes, which is further compared with the buy-and-hold performance. It is found that in the course of the study, although the stockl market performance drops by 29%, among those stocks which apply the buy-and-hold strategy in this study, 21of 31 stocks has >0 investment performance, which takes up 68% around. It reveals that notwithstanding the decline of the stock market, the profit-taking chance is quite high, as long as one buys and holds Taiwan 50 component stocks.. The study also indicates that with the long-term investment strategy, the performance of the month KD is the best among the technical indices, while with the short-term investment strategy, the week RSI of the technical indices has the best performance. After transparent treatment, the investment performance of the technical indices is better than that of the primary technical indices. It suggests that the technical indices will result in the better investment performance after the transparent treatment. Moreover the Sharpe and Treynor Index of the investment portfolio with the risk factor taken into consideration reveals that the technical indices after the transparent treatment have the optimal investment performance. The technical indices after the transparent treatment have the significant improvement effect on the investment performance. It illustrates that the Taiwan stock market is not a market with weak efficiency.

Abstract:
This thesis compares eroticism in the post-revolutionary work of the Czech prose writer Vladimír Páral with the bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey by the British writer E. L. James. From Páral's work, the works of Dekameron 2000 or Love in Prague, Playgirls, Book of pleasure, laughter and joy, and the Book about the whip are discussed. Also included is The Professional: Vladimír Páral about himself and other interesting things, which came out in the 1990s, but it is an autobiography. Therefore, this book will be included in the chapter on autobiographical connotations. The thesis is divided into three main parts. The first one is mainly terminological, it explains the terms sex, eroticsm, pornography, erotic and pornographic literature and love. The second part deals with the authors themselves and their body of work. It is organised into sub-chapters in which specific pieces are analysed. In the case of Páral, the parallel between the Book of pleasure, laughter and joy and Kundera's Book of laughter and forgetting is also taken into account. In the case of Fifty Shades of Grey, some similarities with the erotism in Milan Kundera's work are found. In the summary, the texts are compared in terms of the role of eroticism, sex tools, plot characters as well as author's intention and style. The subjective...

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立屏東科技大學<br>企業管理系所<br>104<br>Using the daily, weekly, mouthly data of Taiwan Top 50 ETF and Mid-Cap 100 ETF from January 2011 to December 2015 as examples. Trying to improve the VAR on interactive structure between technical index and stock return by using Grey forecasting model GM(1, 1), and compare with the original technical index and stock return. First of all, we use GM(1, 1) to whiten the original data, and grey technical index are obtained. We choose traditional technical index such as KDJ, MACD, RSI, BIAS and W%R as agency index. And put the original data and whiten data into Granger causality test and VAR model to find out the Granger causality and interactive structure between technical index and stock return, and compare the Granger causality and interactive structure between the original data and the whiten data. We found: Both of the original data and the whiten data shows Granger causality between technical index and stock return. However, the whiten data shows more two-way reaction than the original data. And Both of the original data and the whiten data shows interactive structure between technical index and stock return. But the whiten data improve the explanatory ability of technical index to stock return. And the whiten data also increase the width of impulse response. And result shows the technical index still work in Taiwan stock market. This study doesn’t support a weak-form efficiency market hypothesis in Taiwan stock market.
