Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown on 304 stainless steel using iron as a catalyst. By using the applied voltages of 4-6 kV, iron wire with 0.5 mm in diameter was sparked for 1, 2, 10 and 100 times to form catalytic dots on the steel substrate. CNTs were subsequently grown in a gas mixture of 10 ml/s Ar and 0.1 ml/s C2H2 at a temperature range 700 - 900 K for 300 s (5 min). The dots and CNTs were characterised using AFM, SEM and TEM to determine their characteristics.

The fate of aluminum accumulated by fish can be studied using 26Al as a tracer, but the present cost of 26Al will keep experiments to a small scale and replication to a minimum. The methods developed for liquid scintillation counting of 26Al uptake will be most useful with exposures to low Al concentrations, where changes in Al concentration cannot be measured using other methods. Preliminary results showed that the gills and whole bodies of redbelly dace (Chrosomus eos Cope) accumulated more Al, when exposed to 480 μg∙L−1 Al at pH 5.1, than dace exposed to 200 μg∙L−1 Al at the same pH.

The possible use of biowaste-banana skin as an alternative, low-cost biosorbent and reductant for removal of Cr from aqueous solutions was investigated. Effects of pH, contact time, Cr(VI) initial concentration and temperature on the reduction and biosorption of Cr by banana skin were studied. Experimental results showed that 1 g of dried banana skin could reduce about 230 mg of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), at the condition of 30°C, pH 2 and 300 rpm. The maximum Qeq of Cr(III) by banana skin was 6.3mg g-1 at the Cr(VI) initial concentration of 200mg L-1, 30°C , pH 2 and 300 rpm.

AbstractBetween 1983 and 1995, 546 Blalock-Taussig shunt procedures were performed in 472 patients: 128 (23.0%) were classical shunts, 90 of them on the same side as to the aortic arch, and 418 (77.0%) were modified shunts, 182 on the same side of the arch. At the time of surgery, 78 patients were aged below one week, 270 from one week to 12 months, and 198 patients were over one year of age. The mean pre-operative arterial saturation (71.7%±16.5%) was significantly increased to 83%±17.9% imme-diately after the procedure (p=0.017). A new unsymmetrical diarylethene derivative 1-(2,4-dimethyl-isoxazol-3-yl)-2-(2-methyl-5-formyl-3-thienyl) perfluoroyclopentene (1a) was synthesized. Its photochromic and fluorescent properties were investigated, respectively. The results showed that this diarylethene exhibited reversible photochromism, the ring-closed isomer absorption maxima were observed at 519 nm and 527 nm in hexane and PMMA film, respectively. In hexane solution, diarylethene 1 showed good fluorecence switching characters with 309 nm light excited.
