Abstract:
The paper deals with the chronology of the early Neolithic forest-steppe Zavolzhye monuments, which is based on radiocarbon definitions obtained from fragments of ceramics. Radiocarbon dates on Elshanskaya and Srednevolzhskaya culture monuments are collected in two tables. They are graphically represented by a probability interval for each date. For the conditional statistical unit the chronological interval of 125 years is accepted. On the basis of statistical data, the author has constructed graphs that reflect the frequency of dates occurrence for periods of 250 years. As for the Elshanskaya culture monuments the highest concentration of radiocarbon dates occurs on a chronological segment 5875-5250 cal BC (39% of all dates). Half of the dates are recorded on the segment 4750-4500 cal BC (21%). Only 12% of radiocarbon dates are in 6750-6250 cal BC, which belongs to the period of the Elshanskaya antiquities development. In our opinion, Elshanskaya culture could not exist unchanged for such a long time. Such a significant variation in time is apparently due to the imperfection of the dating method and the presence of reservoir effects of various kinds. Elshanskaya culture probably existed in 5875-5250 cal BC. At the final stage of Elshanskaya antiquities existence (5500-5250 cal BC) the monuments of Srednevolzhskaya culture started to develop.

Wade, Matthew. "Investigating the origins of macroscopic variation in differential ethnic hair types." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2013. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/52502/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the modern world hair plays a cultural and aesthetic role. The hair care industry accounts for a large portion of the cosmetic and dermatological industry generating large financial sums in sales, and consequently research and development into hair care products is important for companies seeking to increase their market share and profits. Currently there are very few products which specifically target certain ethnicities as the basis of knowledge underlying what nanoscopic and molecular factors cause the variation seen at the macroscale of human hair is circumscribed. Therefore a need exists within this industry to expand the information available on the origins of macroscopic variation in differential ethnic hair types. The work presented in this thesis is the embodiment of five different studies: a bulk X-ray scattering analysis of single hair fibres, a series of skin-core experiments utilising microfocus X-ray scattering, an attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study of the cuticle surface and a study of the lipids extracted from different spatial locations within hair fibres. The bulk X-ray scattering analysis on single hair fibres showed that the non-keratinous materials; namely the lipids and the amorphous/disordered material and interfaces present are responsible for the largest source of variation seen inter-ethnically at the nanoscopic and supramolecular levels. The lipids were found to be different amongst hair types with respect to their crystalline spacing, the total intensity and thus volume present and also in the preferential structural orientation of the lipid arrangement. The low angle diffuse scatter which is thought to be related to the keratin associated proteins varied with respect to the extent in q range, the angular behaviour and the behaviour of the diffuse scatter under hydration conditions. The azimuthal spread of the reflection arising from the inter-lateral packing of the keratin intermediate filaments was also found to differ between hair types. The skin-core experiments provide information on the textural variation of the hair fibre across the concentric subsections of hair enabling information to be sought on the structural components of the hair. The work presented shows that there are zonal differences in both the keratinous and non-keratinous structures present across the cross-section of the hair fibres both intra and inter-ethnically. The differences seen are in the size and location of specific hierarchical keratinous assembly structures and also in the ultra -structure of the hair fibre as whole. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is a bench top technique that is widely available to investigate the surface structure of materials. The study presented has shown differences related to the keratin conformational structure and the hydrophilic properties of the hair fibres. There are also variations seen in the products of the cysteine containing structures due to weathering which may be due to a difference in the geographical location of the source. Lipids that are present on either the surface of hair fibres or located within the hair fibre account for the largest non-proteinaceous component present in hair. An investigation characterising the lipids preferentially extracted from different spatial locations of the hair fibre has been performed. The work presented has revealed that there is significant variation both intra and inter-ethnically in the total lipid content present, the lipid classes and the fatty acid profiles. The variation in the fatty acid profiles may also possibly be related to the difference in signal seen in the X-ray diffraction study.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis examines "Saudi Arabian foreign policy towards Communism during the Cold War: King Faisal's foreign policy with the Soviet Union, 1962-1975." The goal of this project is to further our understanding of Saudi diplomacy towards Soviet communism during the Cold War. Drawing on a broad range of archival and published sources in Arabic and English, such as government papers, books and articles, this study investigates different attitudes and polices that shaped Saudi Arabian policy in containing Communism around its zenith in the Middle East in the 1960s and 1970s. Focusing on built strategies of fighting Communism; the policy process was also framed as a struggle against secular nationalism movements and hence Islamic diplomacy became a fundamental motivation for action. These were key features of Saudi policy during the Cold War and were utilised in an effort to mobilize domestic actors in Saudi Arabia. My thesis thus pays special attention to key characteristic of "encirclement syndrome" that enables a systematic assessment of this study. The thesis's main argument is that Saudi Arabia in the 1960s and 1970s fought Communism on all fronts as the results of wider political and religious factors, rather than the actions of an individual ruler or country.

Abstract:

Bam, June Catherine. "The current relevance of populist history in schools : the attitudes of Cape Town youth to history." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52503.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (DPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis exanunes whether the historical consciousness of grade 10 youth would increase should there be an intervention facilitated for this purpose, that is that they would show a heightened consciousness of the relation between school history and current affairs, politics and other societal issues. This intervention comprises the My New World text produced within the populist historiographical tradition in South Africa. The notion of historical consciousness is defined as the complex relation between an interpretation of the past, a perspective of the present and expectations of the future ROsen (1989; 1994). The investigation comprised a theoretical and empirical component. The theoretical component is informed by the theories of epistemology, knowledge, schooling and curriculum. The empirical component is based on the Youth and History Survey conducted on historical consciousness amongst youth in Europe in the early 1990s. Both this study and the European study were conducted during periods of political transition. The chosen research methodology was that of triangulation, combining quantitative with qualitative methods. The quantitative component was based on the measurement used in the European study, and comprised an experimental pre-test and post-test research design, measuring "inside school" and "outside school" historical consciousness. The study was conducted in 8 grade 10 classrooms at 8 schools in Cape Town, representative of class, race, language and gender. The teachers acted as facilitators of the intervention. The conclusion reached in the research is that although the intervention resulted in an increased enthusiasm amongst individuals for school history and interest in political issues and an understanding for the present as in evidence from the qualitative data, this was not reflected in the quantitative data which showed no significant increase in the "inside school" nor "outside school" historical consciousness amongst youth of average 15 years in grade 10 history classrooms in Cape Town. It can therefore not be empirically concluded that when youth are exposed to populist history over a limited period that they would show an increased "outside school" or "inside school" historical consciousness even though an intervention might aim to increase such a consciousness. A significant finding is that the case for an already existent historical consciousness related to the variables of class and gender holds. Instead of increasing the levels of historical consciousness, the intervention resulted in a surfacing of long-held attitudes, perceptions and beliefs of people, society, the past, the present and the future. The intervention succeeded in bringing these complex layers of variables and related factors that impact on perceptions and attitudes to the surface. Given this complexity, it was also concluded that an empirical study of historical consciousness amongst youth through an intervention over a limited period of time is risky, if not of little value.

Coosner, Carroll Diane. "The design and evaluation of a cognitive skills assessment checklist for educators." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52505.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MEd)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Post-apartheid South Africa has seen a shift to process-centred, outcomesbased (OBE) education. Within this paradigm much has been written and recommended as regards assessment, specifically authentic assessment, which needs to be continuous. Within this transformatory model of teaching and assessment, it is vital for the educator to understand how the learner learns in order to assess him/her authentically. Because cognition has to do with how learners acquire, store and utilize information, the best way to assess cognitive ability is to assess those thought processes that are involved in arriving at the products of cognition directly. Being process-based and judging the learners' responsiveness to instruction, it becomes important for the educator to examine how a learner learns, before educators can hope to categorise and analyse the learners' ability to learn. The paucity of the data base search revealed that the design of such a cognitive checklist was imperative. The checklist had to be easily understood, practical and easily impiementabie. The researcher based the checklist on Feuerstein's (1980) model, which is underpinned by the concepts of structural cognitive modifiability (SCM) and the mediated learning experience (MLE). SCM is based on the assumption that human beings have the capacity to modify their cognitive functions and adapt to life's changing demands. They are thus open systems which are amenable to cognitive changes. Structural changes are pervasive and determine cognitive function in a broad series of mental activities. Feuerstein has suggested a list of deficient cognitive functions at the input, elaboration and output phases of the mental act. These serve as guidelines for observational and mediational efforts. The identification of the deficient cognitive function, the level of modifiability and the mediation required to change them are considered to be of vital importance to predicting future learning. This basic assumption shifts the responsibility for a person's modifiability from that individual to the mediator or educator. The basic parameters of the cognitive process are subsumed into the cognitive map. These include: content; operation; modality; phase (input, elaboration, output); level of complexity; level of abstraction and level of efficiency. The present researcher reframed all the basic components of the learning phases into easily accessible English and provided examples of sub-skills (150) necessary for the successful acquisition of learning at that phase of the learning process. The literature study was followed by a pilot-study. This was carried out in order to refine the checklist and make sure that it was, indeed, user-friendly, easily understood, impiementabie without training and that it yielded information which the educators found to be professionally beneficial and enriching. The results of the pilot-study were incorporated into The Checklist To Assess Cognitive Skills' (Chapter 4). The result of the research was unanimous as regards the above-mentioned goals. The educators all realised the necessity of linking assessment to instruction and understood how crucial it is that educators understand and appreciate how a learner learns and hence, develops.
Hierdie lys dien as riglyne by beide waargenome en gemedieerde pogings.

Magano, Abram Tshwaro. "The design of a communication protocol for a distributed ADCS for SUNSAT 2." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52506.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: One of the main subsystems of SUNSAT is the Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS), responsible for the orientation and positioning of the satellite. Due to the integrated architecture of the system, several shortcomings were identified. A possible solution to the problems is the implementation of a distributed system. The design of a communication protocol for a distributed system is the focus of this thesis. An investigation on different network topologies and communication protocols as well as error control techniques is carried out to establish a combination that meets the requirements of the ADCS. Based on defined protocol specifications a detailed protocol design is proposed. Then the protocol is implemented using a layered software structure that emanates from the OSI layering model, to provide well defined software structures and interfaces. A series of measurements have shown that the protocol meets the functional requirements of the ADCS and further provides reliable data transfer on the network.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The last two decades have seen many changes within the automotive industry. Many advances have been made in the design, research and development of the internal combustion engine and technological progress made in the integrated-circuit and computer industry has resulted in the availability of reliable low-cost electronic components. These components have, over time, been incorporated into the very hearts of engines, thereby allowing for the accurate control of engine functions and processes to an extent that was previously impossible. Parallel to these developments is the growing concern for the environment and the realisation that resources are being consumed at ever-increasing rates. This has placed vehicle manufacturers under continual pressure to optimise their engines, not only for fuel efficiency, but also to reduce harmful emissions while continuing to deliver better performance and drivability characteristics. At the same time, engine testing equipment and facilities have had to keep abreast with these advances and this has required the development of more sophisticated testing facilities. One such facility is the dynamic engine test-bed. Among other features, this facility has the ability to subject test-bed mounted engines to loads similar to what would be experienced in a vehicle on the road. This approach allows for the optimisation of engine components and performance under more realistic conditions, yielding results far superior to those obtainable using more conventional steady-state testing and development procedures. This document discusses the development of such a dynamic engine test-bed at the Centre for Automotive Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch. The project was initiated by conducting a literature survey to establish the current state of technology in the field. The dynamic test-bed was developed around an existing direct-current electric motor and industrial speed controller configured in a regenerative manner. This setup enabled the unit to both absorb and deliver power, essential for the simulation of vehicle dynamics. Great care was taken to ensure that signals obtained from the test-bed were accurate and useful for further computer manipulation. Anti-aliasing filters were designed and manufactured to guarantee that signals could not be misinterpreted due to sampling effects. A computer-implemented vehicle model was developed to simulate, in real-time, vehicle response to torque developed by the engine on the test stand. The model included a manual transmission, clutch and a rigid drive-shaft. Driver input (accelerator, brake, clutch and gear selection) was by means of a set of pedals and hand-held gear selector switches. Various vehicle speed control strategies were investigated and recommendations made regarding their possible future implementation. System evaluation was accomplished by the simulated acceleration of a large truck. The simulations indicated that repeatable results could be obtained from the system. The system was also found to be adequately sensitive to reflect the effect of subtle changes made to engine parameters on vehicle acceleration. It was concluded that the dynamic engine test-bed did indeed offer the capability to conduct research and testing not previously available in South Africa. Finally, recommendations were made for the future improvement and expansion of the system's performance and capabilities.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The primary goal of this cross-cultural study was to determine how low-income female farm workers in the Western Cape of South Africa, describe their own coping mechanisms. Eight participants were asked to respond to an open-ended question on how they cope with life's difficulties. The current study formed part of a larger project entitled: "Forgotten women on farms". The psychological distress and resilience of female farm workers of colour in the Western Cape: exploring the possibilities for mental health support (Kruger, 1998). The coping interviews were analyzed by means of grounded theory. Analysis revealed that 28 coping mechanisms were identified by the participants themselves. A distinction was made between problem-focused coping mechanisms and emotion-focused coping mechanisms. Out of the 28 identified mechanisms, 8 were categorized as problem-focused coping mechanisms, while 20 were categorized as emotion-focused coping mechanisms, suggesting that the participants predominantly employ emotion-focused coping mechanisms. It was also found that the emotion-focused coping mechanisms employed by the participants often involved an avoidance of emotion. The findings were discussed by: (i) Critically discussing the way in which emotion-focused coping is traditionally defined within the coping literature. (ii) Comparing this to the conceptualization of the role of emotion by authors of trauma literature. Possible reasons for the prevalent use of emotion-focused coping mechanisms in this particular population were provided. The implications of these findings for assessment of coping strategies and for mental health care in this population were discussed.
Hierdie studie vorm deel van "n groter projek getiteld "Forgotten women on farms". The psychological distress and resilience of female farm workers of colour in the Western Cape: exploring the possibilities for mental health support (Kruger, 1998). Hierdie onderhoude oor streshantering is ontleed m.b.v. "grounded theory".

Abstract:
Abstract Magnetic resonance imaging techniques were used to collect three-dimensional velocity data measurements of scaled models of a canyon in New Mexico to compare to simulations where a gas was released inside the canyon. The first canyon model covers an area of 1850m × 1030m with a scale of 1:5250 while the second model covers an area of 290m × 160m with a scale of 1:825. A fully turbulent flow with a Reynolds number of 36,000 using the channel hydraulic diameter passes through the canyon geometry for both models. With Magnetic Resonance Velocimetry (MRV), more than 13 million data points were measured to represent flow velocity. The MRV experiment with the 1:5250 scale model helped to identify key terrain features to be included in the next set of measurements of a higher resolution model. MRV not only served as a method of analysis but also as a method for design. The analysis of the data resulted in a new design of a 1:825 scale, which had a higher resolution of the terrain surrounding the gas release point. The preliminary scans from the 1:825 scale model showed a much more dynamic flow around the release point than observed in the 1:5250 scale model. Counter-rotating vortices and circulation can be observed in the 1:825 scale model. This data set will be used to compare to Sandia National Laboratories’ simulations of turbulent flows in a complex terrain.

Abstract:
A probabilistic micromechanics model had been developed for the unidirectional fiber-reinforced composite material design screening. In which, we used the predicted mechanical properties of IM-7 carbon fiber from the existing IM-7/5250-4 composite material system together with the observed 977-3 matrix mechanical properties to predict the probability density functions for the mechanical properties of IM-7/977-3 unidirectional composite. To include the material design in the structural design process, we had extended the probabilistic analysis to predict the probability density functions for the off-axis mechanical properties. The angle-ply and cross-ply laminates have been used extensively in aerospace structural designs. It is logical to extend the probabilistic analysis to predict the probability density functions for the mechanical properties of the laminated composite. We had provided the probabilistic analysis for a symmetric regular angle-ply laminate of IM-7/5250-4 composite laminate. In this report, we will focus on the probabilistic analysis of symmetric and anti-symmetric regular cross-ply laminates of IM-7/5250-4 fiber-reinforced composite with odd-number plies parallel to and even-number plies perpendicular to the laminate principal axes. These probabilistic micromechanics models provide a design-screening tool to help material producers to eliminate the unnecessary time-consuming and costly material fabrications and to reduce the numbers of testing to a minimum but enough to verify the model prediction. They also provide a structural analysis tool to help the structural designer to manage the structural and material uncertainties during the structural design process. And consequently, it provides a means to accelerate the insertion of materials into AF productions.

Full text
Abstract:
Commercial light water reactor fuel UO2 has a low thermal conductivity that leads to the development of a large temperature gradient across the fuel pellet, limiting the reactor operational performance due to the effects that include thermal stresses causing pellet cladding interaction and the release of fission product gases. This study presents the development of a modeling and simulation for enhanced thermal conductivity UO2-BeO fuel behavior in a light water reactor, using self-defined multiple physics models fully coupled based on the framework of COMSOL Multiphysics. Almost all the related physical models are considered, including heat generation and conduction, species diffusion, thermomechanics (thermal expansion, elastic strain, densification, and fission product swelling strain), grain growth, fission gas production and release, gap heat transfer, mechanical contact, gap/plenum pressure with plenum volume, cladding thermal and irradiation creep and oxidation. All the phenomenal models and materials properties are implemented into COMSOL Multiphysics finite-element platform with a 2D axisymmetric geometry of a fuel pellet and cladding. UO2-BeO high thermal conductivity nuclear fuel would decrease fuel temperatures and facilitate a reduction in pellet cladding interaction from our simulation results through lessening thermal stresses that result in fuel cracking, relocation, and swelling, so that the safety of the reactor would be improved.

Abstract:
In order to analyze the reliability of the new lock mechanism which is an important part of aircraft cabin door system, this paper studies the reliability and sensitivity for the lock mechanism based on surrogate models and variance methods respectively. Function hazard analysis (FHA) and failure mode effects analysis (FMEA) of lock mechanism is studied firstly. Then, based on dynamics simulation model, performance function and various random variables, the widely used surrogate models of lock mechanism is established and verified. Based on the most accurate metamodel which has been established, the unlocking reliability which is the most hazardous function is calculated. Finally, the variance-based sensitivity method is used for sensitivity analysis of influence factors, the result shows that the tension of lock-hook from lock-ring is the largest influence factor on the unlocking reliability, which could contribute to the analysis and further improvement of lock mechanism.

Abstract:
This paper presents an investigation of a novel linear-type piezoelectric ultrasonic actuator for application in a Smart Fuze Safety System (SFSS). Based on the requirements of SFSS, the structural parameters of the proposed piezoelectric ultrasonic actuator are determined by fuze arming mode. Moreover, sensitivity analysis of the structural parameters to the frequency consistency is conducted using FEM software, after which the optimal dimensions are obtained with two close natural vibration frequencies. To validate the results of FEM, the frequency sweep tests of the piezoelectric ultrasonic actuator are performed to determine the motor’s actual working mode frequencies with PSV-300-B Doppler laser vibrometer system. Furthermore, the results of frequency sweep test are compared with that of the finite element analysis, and further verified by impedance analyzer. To investigate the overall performance of the piezoelectric ultrasonic actuator, vibration modes of actuator’s stator, output speed and force of the piezoelectric ultrasonic actuator are tested. The experimental results show that the output speed and force of the actuator can reach 88.2 mm/s and 2.3N respectively, which means that piezoelectric ultrasonic actuator designed in this paper can meet the demands of the SFSS.
