Abstract:
The paper deals with the chronology of the early Neolithic forest-steppe Zavolzhye monuments, which is based on radiocarbon definitions obtained from fragments of ceramics. Radiocarbon dates on Elshanskaya and Srednevolzhskaya culture monuments are collected in two tables. They are graphically represented by a probability interval for each date. For the conditional statistical unit the chronological interval of 125 years is accepted. On the basis of statistical data, the author has constructed graphs that reflect the frequency of dates occurrence for periods of 250 years. As for the Elshanskaya culture monuments the highest concentration of radiocarbon dates occurs on a chronological segment 5875-5250 cal BC (39% of all dates). Half of the dates are recorded on the segment 4750-4500 cal BC (21%). Only 12% of radiocarbon dates are in 6750-6250 cal BC, which belongs to the period of the Elshanskaya antiquities development. In our opinion, Elshanskaya culture could not exist unchanged for such a long time. Such a significant variation in time is apparently due to the imperfection of the dating method and the presence of reservoir effects of various kinds. Elshanskaya culture probably existed in 5875-5250 cal BC. At the final stage of Elshanskaya antiquities existence (5500-5250 cal BC) the monuments of Srednevolzhskaya culture started to develop.

Abstract:
The environmental conditions of the Szczecin Bay, which existed prior to Szczecin Lagoon, have been reconstructed on the basis of the stable carbon and oxygen isotope (18O and 13C) analysis and radiocarbon dates obtained for subfossil shells of Cerastoderma (Cardium) glaucum. The shells in the collected core were well preserved in their life positions, representing a geochemical record of past temperature variation over the middle Holocene. Three major periods with different thermal conditions have been distinguished in the interval ~ 6000–4300 cal yr BP, when the important Littorina regional transgression took place. During the first period, 6000–5250 cal yr BP, water temperature decreased by 1.4°C, and then remained constant over the second period (5250–4750 cal yr BP). In contrast, during the third period (4750–4300 cal yr BP) both δ-values were highly variable and the mean summer temperature (March–November) increased by about 3.5°C. During first two periods, δ18O and δ13C were significantly correlated, indicating stability of the environmental conditions.

Abstract:
The study described in this report uses the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) apparatus to induce damage in a polymer matrix composite by low-velocity, transverse impact. The configuration used a three-point bend fixture in the SHPB for controlled loading and real-time diagnosis. The material analysed was a glass-fibre reinforced bismaleimide matrix composite designated S2 glass/5250-4. Experiments were conducted to characterise the response of the composite by relating a range of impact energies to the post-impact tensile strength following salt-water aging. Results showed that following salt-water aging, a monotonic relation exists between the amount of impact energy absorbed by the specimens and both the post-impact tensile strength and the moisture absorbed by the specimens. In the S2 glass/5250-4 system examined, the effects of exposure to 5000 hours of saltwater following impact were minor, illustrating the insignificance of this type of environmental effect on the post-impact tensile strength.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We present an in-class scenario-based exercise by which accounting information systems students learn about the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) 2013 Framework. Students are randomly assigned to groups of three to five, and each group receives a list of 17 principles and 17 scenarios. These scenarios are based on emerging technology environments and are designed to illustrate the key ideas in each of the five components. Each group categorizes the principles and scenarios into the five components. For each scenario, students are expected to (1) review the key framework components and principles, (2) understand how each component relates to real-world implementation scenarios, and (3) identify potential internal control weaknesses and risk mitigation. Discussions are video-recorded to evaluate the in-class exercise and fine-tune subsequent exercises. Ultimately, this exercise can help students understand the COSO 2013 Framework in emerging technology environments.

ABSTRACT In this study, we investigate how country-level long-term orientation affects managers' willingness to engage in earnings management and choice of earnings management strategy. Using a comprehensive dataset of 47 countries for the period from 2003 to 2015, we find that firms in long-term-oriented cultures rely relatively more on earnings management through accruals, while firms in short-term-oriented cultures engage in relatively more real earnings management. Furthermore, we find a larger discontinuity around earnings benchmarks in long-term-oriented cultures suggesting that manipulation of accruals enables benchmark beating with high precision. Abstract:
ABSTRACT Using a unique, manually collected dataset, we are the first to analyze the role that management guidance at the segment level plays for the financial analyst earnings forecasts of diversified firms. About half of the diversified European firms in the sample provide segment-level guidance (SLG), with considerable variation in precision and disaggregation. We find that (1) analyst earnings forecast errors are smaller, and (2) the magnitude of disagreement between individual forecasts and the average forecast is lower for firms that provide SLG, beyond the effect of group-level guidance. The results hold in matched samples and within-firm analyses around SLG initiation. We further show that the results are stronger in situations characterized by higher information asymmetry, but not in situations characterized by operational complexity. Overall, the results imply that SLG mitigates, to some extent, the difficult task that financial analysts face when valuing diversified companies.

ABSTRACT In this study I find that product substitutability has a negative relation with pay-earnings but no relation with pay-stock return sensitivity, whereas market size and ease of entry have no relation with pay-earnings but a positive relation with pay-stock return sensitivity. These findings collectively imply that firms in more competitive industries place less reliance on earnings-based and greater reliance on stock-based measures to determine managerial compensation than firms in less competitive industries. I also find that product substitutability has a positive relation whereas market size and ease of entry have negative relations with managerial pay levels, suggesting different dimensions of product market competition may have independent influences on managerial pay design. Finally, I find that industry regulation has a positive relation with pay-earnings but a negative relation with pay-stock return sensitivity. This study's findings suggest a contextual approach to examining the relation between industry attributes and managerial pay. JEL Classifications: D4; G34; J33; L1; M40; M41; M46. Abstract:
ABSTRACT Technological advancements have greatly improved the ability to provide relative performance information (RPI), including information systems capable of providing feedback on demand. We use an experiment to examine the effect of RPI feedback frequency on task performance when RPI is assigned by managers and when RPI is solicited by employees. When RPI is assigned to employees, we hypothesize and find a non-linear relationship between RPI frequency and performance such that an increase in frequency first increases and then decreases performance. In contrast, we hypothesize and find that when RPI is chosen by employees, the negative effect of highly frequent RPI on performance is not only mitigated, but reversed, due to individuals placing greater weight on chosen feedback than assigned feedback. We also find that when individuals choose to view RPI feedback, strategic effort (i.e., expending short-term resources for long-term benefits) mediates the relation between viewing RPI and subsequent performance. Abstract:
ABSTRACT This study provides new insights about how tax professionals' economic and social relationships with clients separately and jointly affect tax professionals' propensity to recommend aggressive tax positions to clients when resolving ambiguous issues. In an experiment with 133 practicing tax professionals, we manipulate the economic importance of the client and client identification (a social construct). We find that as the economic importance of the client increases, professional recommendations follow an inverted U-shaped pattern. Tax professionals more strongly recommend aggressive positions for clients of moderate economic importance than for clients of low or high economic importance. We also find that tax professionals with high versus low client identification provide more aggressive recommendations for clients of low or moderate economic importance, but not for clients of high economic importance. This paper contributes to the literature by identifying a boundary condition on client identification that has not been considered in prior accounting research.

Abstract:
Research has been conducted on the treatment of phlegm cough with miana leaf extract in vitro (effective dose of miana leaf extract as an expectorant and antibacterial agent causing cough with phlegm). The study aims to compare the antioxidant activity of miana leaves from 3 locations where it grows, determine the types of contaminant bacteria in the sputum of cough sufferers, determine the minimum value of inhibitor concentration (MIC) and MKC of miana leaves against the test bacteria causing cough with phlegm, determine the effective dose of miana leaves that can used as a reference for coughing up phlegm and proving the potential of miana leaves as a sputum thinner. Miana leaf extraction is done by the juicer method. Antioxidant activity testing uses the DPPH method. Determination of test bacteria is done by isolating and identifying contaminant bacteria in the sputum sample of cough with phlegm. Testing the effectiveness of miana leaves against test bacteria is determined by the liquid dilution method. Expectorant activity testing was determined by measuring the viscosity of mucus viscosity of cow intestine treated with miana leaf extract. The results found that antioxidant activity was influenced by the location where miana leaves grew with an antioxidant potential of IC72 0.072 mg/ml - 0.76 mg/ml. Contaminant bacteria from sputum samples of cough patients are Streptococcus pneumonia, Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Enterobacter agglomerans. MIC values for contaminant bacteria are 0.1% - 0.75% and MKC values are found between 0.25% - 1.75%. miana leaf extract has the potential as a sputum thinner at a concentration of 0.01% - 0.1%. The recommended dose of miana leaf extract as a cough with phlegm is 1.75% w/v.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT I investigate whether individual managers have an incremental effect on firms' accounting quality (AQ) after controlling for known determinants of AQ, time fixed effects, and firm fixed effects. To identify the manager-specific effect on firm AQ, I construct a dataset that tracks the movement of 907 managers across firms over the period 1992–2014. Results indicate that individual manager fixed effects explain a statistically and economically significant proportion of the cross-sectional variation in AQ, which is comparable to that of firm fixed effects. Variation in managerial attributes that impact AQ is applied consistently as firms switch manager-type. Using a setting of exogenous CEO turnover, I find managerial idiosyncrasies impact AQ and are not merely a reflection of firms actively choosing managers with a desired combination of managerial attributes that, in turn, impact the variability of accruals. Overall, my study underscores the importance of individual managers in the determination of AQ. Data Availability: Data used in this study are publicly available from sources identified in the text.

ABSTRACT This study documents the existence of local employment preferences for corporate executives and examines how the compensation of executives' local peers affects their own performance, risk-taking decisions, and financial reporting decisions. We find that external hires of new CEOs (CFOs) are five (eight) times more likely to be from local firms than non-local firms. We also find that local tournament incentives—as proxied by the pay gap between an executive and higher-paid executives in the area—are associated with stronger performance, greater risk taking, and more financial misreporting. We find consistent results using a difference-in-differences analysis that exploits plausibly exogenous variation in local tournament incentives caused by the sudden death of a local CEO. Our findings are consistent with executives taking actions to compete for a promotion to a nearby firm with higher pay.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We develop a dictionary of linguistic extremity in earnings conference calls, a setting where managers have considerable latitude in the language they use, to study the role of extreme language in corporate reporting. Controlling for tone (positive versus negative) of language, we document that when managers use more extreme words in earnings conference calls, trading volume around the call increases and stock prices react more strongly. In addition, both effects are more pronounced for firms with weaker information environments. Linguistic extremity also affects analyst opinions and contains information about a firm's future operating performance. As such, our results provide evidence that markets are influenced not just by what managers say, but also how they say it, with extreme language playing an important role in communicating reality and not merely reflecting hyperbole.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We present new theory and experimental findings indicating that investors ascribe value to firms that use higher financial reporting quality (FRQ), controlling for the influence of higher FRQ on their estimates of these firms' fundamental value. To guide our investigation, we draw on the cooperation literature in accounting, finance, and psychology. We identify expanded audit reports, particularly auditor commentary, as a mechanism that credibly communicates whether a firm uses higher FRQ. Auditor commentary increases investors' willingness to pay (WTP) more for shares of a firm using higher FRQ than a competing firm using lower FRQ. We also provide process evidence that investors perceive higher FRQ as cooperative behavior by measuring their affective responses and cognitive beliefs, which mediate the influence of audit commentary on investors' increased WTP for higher FRQ. A second experiment bolsters the link between investors' affective and cognitive responses to a firm's FRQ and perceived cooperative behavior.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT IMPACT: The first-line chemotherapies used to treat leishmaniasis are highly toxic intravenous antimonials yet drug resistance has begun to develop, causing the use of oral treatment options with high price tags; there is a strong need for new, safe, and effective chemotherapeutic agents to treat leishmaniasis. OBJECTIVES/GOALS: This study was conducted in order to identify novel chemical compounds that exhibit anti-leishmanial activity and to further characterize their efficacy and toxicity in in vitro and in vivo systems in the hopes of future chemotherapeutic developments. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: A total of 28 unique 1,4-diaryl-pyrazolo-pyridinone (1,4-DAPP) compounds were synthesized and anti-leishmanial efficacy and host cell toxicity were determined using L. donovani mCherry-expressing amastigotes and THP-1 macrophages. Additional pharmacokinetic analyses of a potent 1,4-DAPP compound were conducted, revealing a potential metabolite structure. A select group of the novel compounds were screened in a cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) murine model using L. major mCherry-expressing parasites and female Balb/C mice. The treatment consisted of 10 intralesional injections of compound over a period of 4 weeks, while lesion growth was monitored via fluorescence and manual measurements. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Four experimental compounds had IC50 values less than 5 micromolar, providing similar anti-leishmanial activity to Miltefosine. Compound 9279817 had a clearance almost twice the rate of normal hepatic blood flow and had a relatively high volumes of distribution, indicating this compound is rapidly cleared and distributes into tissues. In vitro rat liver microsome assays suggest a rapid metabolism of 9279817 and MS/MS results suggest this metabolite is most likely formed via oxidation of the sulfur on the lower aryl ring. This sulfoxide metabolite has similar efficacy as the parent compound and does not exhibit toxicity in vitro. Three of the experimental compounds behaved similarly to the antimony positive control in the murine CL model. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF FINDINGS: This study revealed a novel structural class of compounds that have anti-leishmanial activity. Experiments show compounds with similar efficacy to Miltefosine while having significantly less cytotoxicity, suggesting that the 1,4-DAPP structural class could be further developed as a potential chemotherapeutic.

Abstract:
A site beside the river Tjonger near Jardinga in the northern Netherlands is shown to be a rare Late Mesolithic kill and primary butchering site. Finds consist mainly of bones from aurochs and red deer, with a few flint artefacts. Radiocarbon evidence shows that there must have been two phases of use: the first around 5400 cal BC; the second, main phase around 5250–5050 cal BC.

AbstractWe explore the use of the flux difference between the lines Fe I 5250 Å and Fe I 5247 Å as a technique to measure photospheric magnetic fields in late-type stars. The technique developed takes into account all the LTE physics of the problem, assuming a radial and homogeneous magnetic field distribution over the stellar surface. Some test calculations, in order to prove the feasibility of the method, are shown.

Abstract:
A set of associated left pedal elements of a sauropod dinosaur from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation in Weston County, Wyoming, is described here. Several camarasaurids, a nearly complete small brachiosaur, and a small diplodocid have been found at this locality, but none match the exceptionally large size of the pedal elements. Next to the associated pedal elements, an isolated astragalus, phalanx and ungual were found, which match the large metatarsals in size. The elements cannot be ascribed to diplodocids due to the lack of a ventral process of metatarsal I. Moreover, the morphology of metatarsal V has a broad proximal end, with a long and narrow distal shaft, which differs fromCamarasaurus. The size of the material and a medially beveled distal articular surface of metatarsal IV imply an identification as a brachiosaurid. This is the largest pes ever reported from a sauropod dinosaur and represents the first confirmed pedal brachiosaur elements from the Late Jurassic of North America. Furthermore, this brachiosaur material (the pes and the small nearly complete specimen) is the northernmost occurrence of brachiosaurids in the Morrison Formation.
