Full text
Abstract:
This book is written by a retired grid engineer and deals with renewable sources of energy and the instability of the electrical distribution grid. Derek Birkett carefully goes through the arguments about the electrical supply and the effect of intermittent and variable renewable sources of energy on grid stability. As a result of investment in renewable energy and the increasing costs of carbon taxes levied on fossil fuel fired generation, the government has created a situation which is very expensive for consumers and industry, and is unsustainable. The government has intervened in the energy market and provided subsidies and policy support for renewable energy without considering the consequences for the stability of the electrical grid system. The government has no strategic vision of the future for energy generation and no expertise to draw upon. Consumers experience increasing energy costs, power outages and blackouts which will be costly and hard to recover from. Derek states quite clearly that “… the state should no longer use environmental regulation for political purposes unless there is a clear imperative for national well-being and security.”

Full text
Abstract:
Wastewater has been recognized as a resource due to its large quantities, and it contains many valuable resources that can be converted into valuable material. Reusing or recovering resources from wastewater can reduce the environmental footprint of wastewater treatment, minimize the contamination and ensure the availability of valuable resources for the human being. The ultimate aim of wastewater resource recovery (WRR) is to create a sustainable and resilient community which is very relevant in Indonesia as this country experiences many natural or human-made disaster. To have an effective implementation, therefore, it is crucial to identify the barriers or supporting factors in its implementation of Wastewater Resource Recovery, which can be different for many regions. Through extensive literature studies, this study intends to review the possibility of WRR implementation in Indonesia. This study discusses Indonesia policy/regulation about wastewater management across all-region in Indonesia, identify barriers in WRR, compares global trends of wastewater management to Indonesia practice and list wastewater resources that potentially can be recovered in Indonesia. From the review, barriers of WRR implementation in Indonesia is most probably due to the policy and regulation of wastewater management which many of them did not support the option of WRR, instead of suggesting only safe discharge option. However, some regulations have mentioned the utilization of wastewater by-product, but it is limited only to treated water utilization. Other obstacles are social acceptance and distance between recovered material supply and demand. Social acceptance includes the human perception regarding the health risk associated with wastewater by-product. Religion also could be a potential barrier that needs to be handled in the implementation of WRR. This study could give new insight into the current state of wastewater resource recovery initiative in Indonesia; thus the strategy to overcome the barriers could be designed.

Abstract:
Three (or four) straightforward experiments would contribute greatly to completing the spectroscopy of baryons and light mesons. In the baryon sector, data are needed on inelastic reactions from a polarised target withπ±andK±beams up to∼3 GeV/c. Similar data are needed in the light meson sector forp¯pinteractions in the momentum range 0.3–2 GeV/c. In both cases, valuable information is to be obtained from longitudinal (L) and sideways (S) target polarisations as well as the conventional normal (N) polarisation. Thirdly,3S1and3D1mesons in the mass range 1–2.4 GeV could probably be separated either by diffractive dissociation of transversely polarised photons or bye+e−radiative return experiments using transversely and longitudinally polarised electrons.

Abstract:
In this study, two slags of different chemical compositions were blended with a CEM I 52.5R-type Portland cement at 30% wt. replacement ratio. Various tests such as strength, water and chloride ion permeability test were carried out at a high temperature of 38°C. The performances of the slag blends were measured against that of a CEM I 42.5R-type Portland cement. The results obtained showed that the performances of the slag blends were better than that of the CEM I 42.5R cement. In comparing the performances of the slags, the blend prepared from slag 1 had higher strengths and better transport properties than that prepared from slag 2, and this was attributed to the higher basicity and alumina content of slag 1. The findings of the study suggest that in tropical/ high temperature environments, the chemical composition of the slags play an important role in determining their performance.

Full text
Abstract:
The production of lignocellulosic ethanol is one of the most promising alternatives to fossil fuels; however, this technology still faces many challenges related to the viability of the lignocellulosic alcohol in the market. In this paper the endocarp of buriti fruit was assessed for ethanol production. The fruit endocarp was characterized physically and chemically. Acid and alkaline pre-treatments were optimized by surface response methodology for removal of hemicellulose and lignin from the biomass. Hemicellulose content was reduced by 88% after acid pretreatment. Alkaline pre-treatment reduced the lignin content in the recovered biomass from 11.8% to 4.2% and increased the concentration of the cellulosic fraction to 88.5%. The pre-treated biomass was saccharified by the action of cellulolytic enzymes and, under optimized conditions, was able to produce 110 g of glucose per L of hydrolyzate. Alcoholic fermentation of the enzymatic hydrolyzate performed by Saccharomyces cerevisiae resulted in a fermented medium with 4.3% ethanol and a yield of product per substrate (YP/S) of 0.33.

Abstract:
The paper analyses the economic and policy gap between the agriculture in Slovakia and the EU member states from the perspective of the future accession of this country to the Union. As it concludes, the deterioration of terms of trade during the transition period creates also problems for the accession negotiations, because this fact seems to legitimate the equitable implementation of the CAP in all member countries after the East-enlargement of the Union. The paper is arguing, on the basis of income simulation, that that the Commission proposal on reduced direct payments for the newly admitted countries would, in case of Slovakia, generate an improvement of the sectoral income only if they are topped by rural development measures.

Abstract:
This article will challenge the assumption that the challah bread is not of Ashkenazi origin but instead of Sephardic origin. It claims to uncover the place of challah bread in history through a historiographical analysis, followed by a study of old sources that mentions it – even including the first recipe – thus, bringing down the previously established postulates. This article also purports to offering an explanation on the link between Ashkenazi and challah bread, which has made it the paragon – alongside the gefiltefish – of the Jewish cuisine from Eastern Europe.
